"I see," Gaelin replied, "And what is being radiated... Is it magic? There's loose magic everywhere around here, but all of it seems...unhealthy."
Though he was careful to follow his guide, he did chance a glance at the sky.

Ghezr looked around in the same manner as Kilesa, thinking.
"Quite the shame indeed. I can imagine the lake was warm and welcoming - nothing like the sand pit of scorpions it is today."
The end of the ruins was now sight, where the rubble gradually shortened, then disappeared.
"You shouldn't have to go through the lake again this way. You can take your leave from the Captain now if you so wish."

The sky was turning a darker color as time went on, with a stronger glow not unlike the Crater's beginning to permeate the clouds. Large stacks of sickly clouds began to pile as the storm approached. It looked rather unnatural...
"It's part magic and part science. Much of the Zone would actually be liveable to outsiders if not for the magic fueling the continuing irradiation of this place. It's a
deeply dangerous magic born from the remains of a great disaster, the one that freed me from my captivity long ago. A magic that was derived from some of the most groundbreaking and dire science. The thing that lives up there in the Crater... it causes these storms. It is what drives each new wave of radiation across the land."

Mion dipped his head in goodbye, smiling.
"I wish you good travels then, friend. Watch your step, I will wait for your return."

Any normal dragon might feel a sense of dread as the ominous reality set in. ... Gaelin was not a normal dragon. His heart raced with a thrilling rush at the story, and his thirst for knowledge was renewed with vigor.
Under his helmet, his smile couldn't have been wider, as was evidenced by the slight up pitch in his voice and the triple speed at which he spoke. "What sort of science was being conducted and upon what sort of magic? Arcane? Wind? Perhaps something more abstract such as necromancy? Was it the study of magic in its raw form? What were the procedures being used to study it? What sort of tests? Do you have any research notes from the scientists who attempted this? The more detailed the account, the better! Where were you incarcerated, for what, and by whom? What was this place like before this all befell it? What exactly is the crater? Do you know any of the scientists' names? Specialty fields? What were they trying to accomplish with these studies? Does anything remain of their equipment or facilities? What, exactly, lives in the crater? May I have a detailed description of its physical and magical properties?"
As he spoke, Gaelin's hands fumbled at his side for his notebook, keeping his eyes on Mion. Of course, this fumbling about was pointless since his notebook was inside his hazmat suit. That hadn't yet occurred to him, though. His mind was whirling with questions and hypothesis -- far too busy to recognize trivial aspects of the present reality such as how accessible note-taking materials were or were not.
(( Congratulations, you unlocked the research nerd. ))

As Gaelin was speaking, they made it inside of a deep overhang, where there was a light deep within. They came upon a strange device giving off light and warmth, where Mion settled with a very overwhelmed expression.
"It was a large research facility... lots of dragons working... infusing magic with a powerful source of energy from the very makeup of the world..."
Mion's face changed, dropping into one of stone.
"Something went horribly wrong. The facility blew up. Destroyed everything, killed everyone. Everyone except for me and Griever. I remember being unable to stand the heat... It burned, so bad."
Mion was staring blankly at the floor, lapsing into silence. They was quiet for a long moment, their body remaining completely still.

"Who confined me...? One day, just another afternoon watching dragons play in my waters. Next, they were draining me into an endless circuit of pipes... I lost everything, lost myself. I woke up in my own corpse."
Mion was staring towards the entrance of the overhang, out at the lakebed. Their eyes were a bit watery looking as they spoke, mixed with both deep anger and harrowing grief.

(( Actually, I think Pilot accidentally found a really effective way to exact petty revenge.
Dragon: Hey, Gaelin, I found someone who knows a lot about your current research topic!
Gaelin: Hold my triple-shot espresso. ... Actually, nevermind. *chugs it; is ready* ))
By then, Gaelin had realized that he did not have access to his research notes. Instead, he paid as close attention to what Mion was saying as he could. Several moments of silence passed. Then, Gaelin again spoke.
"So...a large facility with many dragons working there were studying magic as well as another energy source which Sornieth was producing, someone acted in error during what I can only assume was a delicate procedure, causing the energy to destabilize, resulting in the ensuing explosion destroying the entire facility and everyone and everything near it except for you and Griever, who were badly burnt in the explosion. And then...somehow, the lake you lived by was drained and you were sucked into its plumbing for an unbearable amount of time, to the point of awakening as undead?" By the end of his recap, Gaelin appeared thoroughly confused. He did feel pity, though. That is, for the lost research. It could have brought so much to light! Well, it did, but...not that kind of "bringing things to light." Explosions tended to be destructive.
(( Most sympathetic dragon. ))

Mion shook his head.
"No, I am not undead, nor did I live by the lake. I
was the lake. What we're standing in is the place where I spent many sweet years watching time go by. What they were messing with was something that had the potential for greatness, but also a great capacity for destruction. One fault was all it took to bring it all crashing down. I was used in the machine to help keep it under control."
They nudged the light source a bit, placing a taloned hand on the metal construct.
"I can owe the loss of everything I had to the ambition of this species that I am now one of. Griever can say the same, except he was always one."
Mion turned his head back to Gaelin, giving him a grim expression.
"You want to see what's left, yes? You wish to travel to the Crater? I can see it in your eyes. In that case, you'll need some extra defenses. One for radiation, one for the beast that stalks the mists."
They raised their eyebrow ridges, then spoke in a softer tone.
"The one thing my past has afforded me in this life is an ability to be... unaffected, unlike other creatures here. Radiation does little to me, yet I can soak it up and channel it someplace else. I can protect you from the radiation there, long enough for you to explore a bit, but that still leaves defending yourself against the Insurrector."
Mion's voice pitched a bit speaking the noun at the end, as if it was both a title and a name. They went on, brushing past it quickly.
"There are technically four dragons who can survive the intensity of the Crater and still have the defenses you would require. Those dragons are Cherenkov, Helios, Archimedes, and Danse. Danse, as well as Helios and Archimedes, have the strongest firepower in all of the Zone... that is, next to the Crater Fiend."
Mion's face had a bit of a glower at the end.
"Is there anything else dire you must know before I send you on your way? We've been here long enough that the rad storm has already gone, so it is now safe for you to depart."

Information he needed? When didn't he have information he needed? There was so much he only had a small understanding of, and so much yet to learn! After that information dump, where could he begin?
"Well, first off, yes, you are correct: I am quite eager to explore the crater and perhaps find whatever might remain of those scientists and their research," Gaelin answered. It was only the beginning... "Secondly, the dragon I met earlier -- Pilot -- also mentioned two called 'Helios and Archimedes,' saying that they lived in the mountains north of here. I was planning on finding them after speaking with you -- which, I have to say, was well worth the effort to reach you. One thing I do not understand, however, is why, if you are so helpful to have around in the crater, you would not come with me. Even if you are a lake, surely lakes don't mind travel, given rivers, wetlands, and deltas in which they travel from their sources to the sea."
Oh boy, now he was in for it. "Which brings me to the particulars of your statement. You were the lake, were you? The water itself, the lakebed as well, or the geographical feature's spirit? I have heard of spirits inhabiting geographical features as their bodies -- usually nature spirits of some sort -- though this is the first time I've met one in person, if you are, indeed, one of them. You being in someone's plumbing makes a lot more sense now, either way. What was it like being a lake? Did it feel odd when dragons skipped stones over your surface? What sort of sensation is it to have fish swimming through your body? Do you consider them parasites, or something else? Do you have any affinity for the Tidelord, or water dragons on the whole? Ah, perhaps they bother you, being manipulators of water."
Gaelin waved a hand, dismissing his recentl line of questioning. "All of that can be saved for the road ahead, of course. In fact, all of this can. We had best be off, haven't we? On the way, including answers to the questions I recently posed, I would like to know more about those we are going to meet: Helios and Archimedes. If they are truly the best-equipped to combat large threats, they sound like ones I won't want to annoy. Of course, it also sounds like they would make good allies in this endeavor. What are they like? Is there anything I should avoid in my conduct? And who is this Insurrector? It sounds like someone I should know more about to be prepared in caseof an encounter. I would also like to know more about this Crater Fiend. That certainly is an imposing name, after all...and yet, I can't help but be excited by it. I am also eager to acquire these defenses you mentioned. Perhaps I can contribute in their construction, if there aren't any readily available. I am a cryptoarcanologist, after all."

Mion narrowed his eyes.
"Mountains unnerve me. Maybe it's because I'm used to flat land instead of rocks jutting out from all over. Things more dangerous than simple stones can hide there... I'm not a fan."
They shook their head.
"If you
really desire my company that much, I suppose I could venture with you. I can answer your questions on the way, as we have a while to go before we reach the foothills."
Mion stood, then headed for the entrance, gesturing for Gaelin to follow once more.
