Hera’s firefly effect is subtle, its a one off color from her primary and secondary. Because it mimics the color of the dark streaks in her starmap, I think the firefly adds a bit more depth by adding in dark spots into her starmap aswell:

I love the Firefly gene! Haven't really used it to hide unfortunate terts yet... though most of mine are pretty subtle (especially with apparel or accents on top of them). They might not be the best examples for the gene, but I love them all~

I have a lot of firefly dragons, I think I agree with the light-on-dark, but I do think colorful firefly can accent a grayscale dragon well.

I ended up giving slime to this girl because the highlights in abyss make the fireflies look really glowy. Makes me think of a bioluminescent sea creature:
