[center][item= firebug][b][size=5]B A S E - L O R E[/size][/b][item= triple-sight firebug][/center] Born year round in warm areas, but mostly visible everywhere during the summer months, Night Sky Fireflies emerge from their hideouts to bask in the warm weather. They have a tendency to nest in tree huts and in very mossy overgrown areas, and have dens amongst the folliage. During the day, the NSF's relax, socialize, and show off their gorgeous plumage. At sundown they collect fireflies to add to their collection. These dragons and their fireflies benefit from a symbiotic relationship. The fireflies get a worry-free life in the form of protection from predators, and the dragons get meals delivered right to them: in the form of the fireflies' predators! Both Nocturnes and Skydancers prey upon insects, but fortunately for the fireflies, they're toxic to most animals, dragons included! The same can't be said for the frogs, lizards and spiders that like to eat fireflies! The male or female with the largest firefly hoard amongst NSFs, are usually the healthiest. They profit from their hard work and dedication to their flies, and eat very well. Keeping their flies healthy is a must for a NSF, and it incorporates into their heavily floral dens, providing their flies a continuous source of nectar.

While Banescales are a violent unprovoked, often painful change from one form to another; the Veilspun seem to have gracefully integrated themselves among the established subspecies. [add something about the founders being veils to begin with?] They behave very similar to the modern breeds associated with the Night Sky Fireflies, for the most part. Due to their small sizes, there are different roles they can play amongst the flock when it comes to diet, most notably the ability to eat nearly anything, including the pollen their fireflies would normally consume! This has resulted in a new behaviour exclusive to the Veilspun breed, dragons who choose to pollinate and find their meals that way. Due to their small size, and varied diet, these dragons have a tendency to assist their fireflies with pollinating flowers of various plants, occasionally taking a nibble while they're there! The only observable way to tell if a Veilspun has a tendency to pollinate flowers, much like the fireflies, is they may return after a night of hunting absolutely covered in pollen! There is a color variation common within the Veilspuns, a bright white display of their deep abyssian colors that is possibly the result of a dietary change. More research must be done, but the working theory is that as these dragons prey on almost anything, the bark, flower, leaves and pollen of certain species of plant individual dragons frequent may influence the way their colors display. (inspired by flamingos i know white is the absence of pigment usually but hhh, maybe make it simply a lack of pigment?) Pollinators are only really differentiated by the pollen strewn across their bodies via flecks, capsule, runes and opal tertiary. However the white variation is most commonly seen among dragons who choose to pollinate, likely due to their lack of camoflauge. opal is pollen sacs/pollen basket like with bees? With striking Aposematism, and bright abyssian colors, these Banescales rise from their previous species they were born as, and take to the night rather much like the fireflies themselves! While they do not have a swarm of their own, they have their own unique deterrent, in their bright colors, as well as a much less picky pallet! The toxicness of the fireflies no longer bothers these Banescales, and unfortunately once they turn they make a quick meal out of their previous companion fireflies. (Changing breeds takes a lot out of you, you know?) These brightly colored Banes have a tendency to be slightly more docile, their bright colors warding off foes, as well as making it more difficult to hunt at night during certain conditions such as snowy months and full moon nights, which reflect brightly off their scales. They tend to stick closer to nestmates for a symbiotic relationship during these times, much as they'd have done with their fireflies prior to the mutation. These Banescales hunt best during overcast nights and are often called BriBanes, among the NightSky Fireflies, in reference to their bright colors. As their darker coloration blends in with the night, they are very stealthy, but can get much more aggressive due to their ambush tendencies, and tend to be less social and more like their initial habits before the breed mutation. Occasionally, due to their lifestyle, a Nightfly will become incredibly adept at their hunting skills, and may become a danger to other dragons, even those looking to help. That is not to say that any color within this subspecies cannot be successful in their habitat, but utilizing their dark camouflage during the nights is a huge advantage for these dragons. These dragons can evolve from any element but are most commonly found amongst the wind and light flights, originating within wind. They tend to be spontaneous, resembling an illness, and a temporary insatiable hunger that typically results in the dragon devouring it's own fireflies. It is presumed this hunger comes from the energy spent from days of illness and physical stress on the body, leading up to the full change. The differences between these two Mutations are gene and behaviour. The way these genes present themselves results in very different behaviour patterns. While both can be friendly, welcome additions to any lair, their genes caused them to adapt to different hunting habits. Of course, this all depends on the environment these dragons end up in, as with any dragon, and their personalities can vary widely as a result. Certain environments these dragons may not naturally gravitate towards, can lead them to develop completely different personalities entirely. Both of the Banescale mutations are indistinguishable after transformation. Not long after turning, however, Bribanes begin to show aposematism- striking colors that ward off predators. Their scales begin to display bright yellows, reds, and other bright markings. This has led them to become less ferocious than their Nightfly counterparts. While they both lost their fireflies, the bright colors of the Bribane help with keeping predators out of their territory. Their ferocious appearance can be seen through the nightly fog which protects them while they sleep. There is no need to fight for territory or defend yourself from predators when you appear poisonous. If they aren't around unmutated NSFs to benefit off the many animals that attempt to eat the fireflies, they opt to hunt in the early morning, their colors being obscured by the blinding sunrise, or later in the evening with the same advantage during the twilight sunset. As such, these Banescales tend to be more relaxed, lazy, and friendly. Without their fireflies, they've had to adapt to hunting without bait, relying strictly on their stealth. Unfortunately, instead of hunting at night, they have to defend their territory. Where a Bribane can be seen through their territory with the skightest of moonlight, and ward off predators not only theirs, but those they compete with; a Nightfly blends in so well that predators tend to tresspass more often. While this leads to plenty of potential prey, that also leads to plenty of confrontation and competition they otherwise wouldn't have to deal with. Were their scales not so tough, they would be covered with scars. Their tert might seem like a deterrent, for predator or prey, but it tends to be easy enough to hide while hunting or skulking about. Unfortunately, it can also lead to being spotted more easily, making them either a target or ruining their ambushes, as they cannot completely disappear. During the new moon is when they can relax the most, as the moonlight tends to giveaway their location, reflecting off their tertiary. While Bribanes can easily use their camoflauge to ambush with the light from the blinding sun, and relax with a meal, Nightflies end up having to aggressively defend their territory more often. Sometimes this aggression will bleed into their personality as a result. [b]Naming Conventions:[/b] Each baby is named after something relating to a firefly, as well as various lights and even stars! If it illuminates, it is fair game! Many are simply firefly in another language! Any Starmap babies may either be of the firefly names, or various constellations (like Mayu and Yutu). This is not necessary, but traditional among the subspecies. These dragons believe that by naming their pups after their flies, and other great sources of light, it will strengthen their bond with their flies earlier on and help their offspring shine brightly themselves. And what are stars, but giant fireflies?
