Introduction
Homunculi are artificial dragons. They are a mix of various parts of dragons (for shape), massive amounts of magic (to function), and other organic materials (for mass). They serve as perfect magical batteries for their creators, storing immense amounts of magic, but never using it themselves. Usually born not knowing or understanding emotions, most are given a single task and a finite lifespan determined by the creator. Not all are created equally though, and it can take years for one to master creating these artificial beings.

Origins
Many of the first recorded 'recipes' for creating a homunculus come from the Starwood Strand. The area is well known for inspiring many dragons, and it appears that the idea of creating homunculi was no exception. It appeared the idea of using a portable magical reservoir wasn't new, but to make it living and able to perform mundane tasks was. Many failed or partially successful experiments were performed before the first true homunculus was born.

However, it was only a matter of time until others began questioning the ethics involved in the process of creating the artificial dragons. Many of the working recipes called for living dragons, as there was no other way of integrating more magic into the creation. Many dragons were killed to create these semi-stable "prototype" homunculi, and it was hardly worth it to most. Those that were successfully made could be used as batteries as expected, but were hardly stable enough to live past a couple months.

Research was halted for quite some time due to these complications, and the idea of creating a 'true' homunculus became a myth to many. That is, until an unnamed Fae combined old methods with alchemy and their natural magical abilities to create the first case of a Stable Homunculus. A few years later, they released their research to the public, revealing how to create what was once impossible without killing anyone. Despite this, it was not taken lightly by those who had previously rejected the idea of using dragons to create others. The Fae was hunted down and outcast from the Starfall Isles, and what had been released of their studies was destroyed.

There was silence on the topic for many years afterwards, but recently, the papers and books previously destroyed have found their way to various territories. There are some changes explaining how to streamline and purify the homunculi created, but otherwise the notes and instructions are unchanged. No author is listed, but many believe this to be the work of the same Fae from before, despite the fact enough time had passed for them to have long since died.

Regardless of the origin of these reprinted documents, a few have taken up attempting to make homunculi of their own, to varying success. While rare sights, they have been found all over Sornieth, as have the documents used to make them.

They can vary in size, but rarely go above or below the normal size of their mimicked species. As homunculi are artificial creations though, they are not guaranteed to look completely like these dragons, and can have various 'mutations'. These can be as simple as fur or feathers where there shouldn't be, or as extreme as extra pairs of limbs. Most homunculi have simple patterning on their bodies. They tend to be smooth, with scales lacking any sort of coarseness, while any feathers and fur appear oily or slick. Markings or patterns tend to mimic how the homunculus was 'born', depending if they lunged out of the liquid holding them, waited for it to dry out, or slowly dragged their way out of it. While not always the case, such as the crystallization of the solution on the body, most 'births' fall into one of those three categories. The most notable physical trait of a homunculus is their glowing markings however. A physical manifestation of their magical potential, this is actually supercharged blood, brimming with magic. This is why regardless of the element of magic stored, the markings always mimic the type of Homunculus created. The brighter and richer the markings, the more magic a homunculus can store. Magical Characteristics Homunculi set themselves apart from the rest of dragonkind by their ability to store massive amounts of magical energy. Usually limited to the element they were infused with, how much they store is based on how bright their glowing markings are. Homunculi with bright markings can hold a seemingly infinite amount of magic, but even those with dull markings can house more magic than the average mage. What is important about this magical storage is that the homunculus cannot use magic itself. Their lifespans are directly linked to this. Inexperienced creators may accidentally kill their first homunculi due to misjudging how much magic remains in them. The amount of magic remaining in their body also effects their overall functionality, but homunculi normally learns what parts are vital to allow them to still function and carry out their duties. This also means that a creator can determine how long a homunculus will live for simply by supplying a single 'charge' that the creation will use for its entire life. It is important to know that the more blended a homunculus's colors, the more unstable they are. Creators often try not to keep these around for too long, as the process of attempting to keep them together is incredibly painful and lingers for as long as the homunculus is alive. Failures often collapse into the materials they were originally made from, and have to be remade. Personality Traits Homunculi are strange in that they aren't born with emotions or an understanding of them. They are also highly obedient and don't question what they are told to do. They are often content with repetitive and/or mundane tasks, and as such, it's highly unlikely that the creator of a homunculus has to worry about their creation turning on them. They can continue these tasks indefinitely, as they do not require food, water, or sleep (though they can partake in such activities), solely relying on magical energy. They also are eerily comfortable with the concept of their death, as well as the idea that they are just a puppet to be used as a battery. That is, until one interacts with others long enough. Homunculi are very capable of learning, and while not sociable with other dragons, if one were to live long enough, they can and will pick up on the behaviors of those around them. However, the longer one is kept alive, the more likely it will become conscious of what it is. Their reaction following this usually depends on what they were tasked with. Those used for more violent tasks such as hunting may physically confront their creator, while others will try and continue pleasing their creator until they can try and escape on their own. These 'freed' homunculi can have wildly varied personalities, but tend to follow certain trends regardless of how they behave otherwise. Many are highly dependent on others for information about the world around them, and many also continue providing various services in exchange for magic to keep them alive for longer. A common quirk among those who have recently realized what they are is to hoard anything and everything they are given. If they don't have a uniform from their previous role, homunculi will create chaotic outfits out of apparel given to them by others. Their dens, if they have a permanent one, have hoards of trinkets, and if they don't have a den, these collections are often kept in a multitude of bags that the homunculus will carry around with them. Should one become affectionate towards another dragon though, they generally aren't subtle in their approach in announcing it. Many dragons take great caution when nesting with a homunculus though, as it's not uncommon for an entire nest to fail, with few hatchlings ever reaching adulthood. This is usually due to the magic of the homunculus parent creating unstable magic in their children. Homunculus parents generally don't show remorse for a failed nest, often stating that they can always try again. Children that survive often fall into two categories. There are children with highly unstable magic, or those that can store and use massive amounts of magic. The former are usually sickly, and are often cared for or looked after by others long into adulthood. The latter are often praised by the homunculus parent, and given gifts as a thanks for their powers. Despite the seemingly obvious favoritism towards children that fall into the latter category, homunculus parents often show much stronger bonds with those that fall into the former. On a much shorter note, homunculi can breed with each other, and usually produce homunculus children. Due to this, some creators attempt to create a pair to breed more homunculi in order to save on resources.

Almost all homunculi have a normal build for whatever dragon species they mimic, if normally a bit lighter than said species. Breeding
Homunculi can actually breed like any other dragon, though the occurrence is rare due to how their emotions normally work. Should one become affectionate towards another dragon though, they generally aren't subtle in their approach in announcing it. Many dragons take great caution when nesting with a homunculus though, as it's not uncommon for an entire nest to fail, with few hatchlings ever reaching adulthood. Vibrant, rich red markings, with generally well separated colors, this variant is the most commonly seen in public. Even when unstable, many are capable of keeping themselves together thanks to the magic flowing through them. This variant also has the least amount of accidental 'mutation', and ones they do have are used to perform their assigned tasks more efficiently. [/columns] Normal, Unhealthy Homunculi [columns] [nextcol] Tertiary Colors: Strawberry-Blush Despite their name, Unhealthy Homunculi are just as healthy as normal ones. They are just as physically healthy otherwise, though more unstable creations have a harder time keeping themselves together. [/columns] Corrupted Homunculi [columns] [nextcol] Tertiary Colors: Gloom-Thistle Much like Unhealthy Homunculi, Corrupted Homuncului are not corrupted or evil like their name would suggest. Instead, these homunculi were created housing the emotions of the dragon or dragons they were made from (should they be made from dragons). While they no longer hold memories of a past life, they still hold the emotions, and as most used for this purpose didn't die peaceful deaths, Corrupted Homunculi are rarely calm when first created. As such, most are either killed very quickly are cautiously cared for, as they aren't the emotionless husks normally created. [/columns] Magicless Homunculi [columns] [nextcol] Tertiary Colors: Maize-Smoke Magicless Homunculi are created when not enough of something is added during creation process. Unlike other Homunculi, these cannot store magic to the same capacity, sometimes hardly more than normal dragons. Due to this, they are often seen as more of a burden, with much shorter lifespans unless someone almost constantly recharges one with magic. Magicless Homunculi are almost always the first ones made by those just learning how to create them, and are as physically stable as normal homunculi despite their inability to hold as much magic. [/columns] Corrupted/Magicless Hybrid Homunculi [columns] [nextcol] Tertiary Colors: Splash-Steel and Caribbean-Robin Often deemed complete failures, these hybrids are often the result of those rushing the creation process, failing to purify and wait for their creation to be 'born'. Possessing little magic, and always having some sort of emotion upon creation, it was a wonder to many as to why these could last past creation. Often born from 'old' methods and very rushed creations, it wasn't until recently that this variant was found out to be of failed Sponge Homunculi. They survive through feeding off of the natural magic around them, as well as those given off by other dragons around them, which also explains their inherent emotions upon creation. [/columns] Decayed Homunculi [columns] [nextcol] Tertiary Colors: Cinnamon - Rust Decayed Homunculi are rare horrors in their subspecies. They are the risen corpses of deceased homunculi, brought back to life by an abundance of magic in the area they die in. Incredibly violent, these variants seek out other dragons in hopes of killing them and draining them of their magic. It can take anywhere from hours to days for one to revive, and their bodies reflect any decay that may have taken place between their death and reanimation, hence their names. Due to their hostility, many are killed on the spot, though some clever dragons can 'tame' these monstrosities. [/columns] Natural Homunculi [columns] [nextcol] Tertiary Colors: Emerald - Moss This variant is spawned by a creator using a mix of the natural magic in the environment and their own magic. While not able to hold as much magic as a normal homunculi, they do not require recharging, and they have the boon of being able to hold any element of magic. However, there's one major drawback to this variant. Due to the nature of their birth, nearly all Natural homunculi are born with emotions in some form or another, and are usually aware of their artificial nature. As such, they are often put in charge of looking after other homunculi, or are even integrated among the other members of a clan. Genetics
Any Breeds, Elements, and Eye Types are accepted!
Genes:
Primaries: Crystal, Iridescent, Laced, Metallic, Piebald, Ripple, Speckle
Secondaries: Alloy, Current, Edged, Eye Spots, Freckle, Facet, Paint, Safari, Shimmer, Stripes, Seraph
Tertiaries: Runes, Circuit, Veined
Gaoler Genes:
Primaries: Crystal, Piebald, and Shaggy
Secondaries: Facet, Paint, Spirit, Streak, and Stripes
Tertiaries: Runes, Veined
Colors:
Primary: White-Obsidian*
Secondary: White-Obsidian*
Tertiary: Any**
*The closer the primary and secondary are, the less stable the homunculus. As such, White/Obsidian or Obsidian/White are considered 'perfect' while doubles or near doubles are highly unstable. This applies to any variants of the subspecies as well.

**Tertiary color determines variant. See below for more details.

Variants
(See bottom of post if interested in subspecies crossovers)
Normal, Healthy Homunculi
dragon?age=1&body=131&bodygene=1&breed=4&element=4&eyetype=2&gender=1&tert=161&tertgene=14&winggene=5&wings=129&auth=f14df0cdc5d5046ee9b91f68104f8430b458cdb3&dummyext=prev.png
Tertiary Colors: Tomato-Red
A healthy homunculus is what many dragons picture when they are brought into a conversation.
Normal, Unhealthy Homunculi
dragon?age=1&body=5&bodygene=4&breed=3&element=3&eyetype=1&gender=0&tert=107&tertgene=14&winggene=18&wings=118&auth=36ccf9eb4f3f70561afe225018309a62ee7bac0d&dummyext=prev.png
Tertiary Colors: Strawberry-Blush
Despite their name, Unhealthy Homunculi are just as healthy as normal ones. The source of their name comes from their less saturated markings, which can be pale or off-colored, and with the pale coloration comes a lower capacity for holding magic. They are just as physically healthy otherwise, though more unstable creations have a harder time keeping themselves together.
Corrupted Homunculi
dragon?age=1&body=5&bodygene=17&breed=2&element=7&eyetype=6&gender=1&tert=12&tertgene=14&winggene=1&wings=177&auth=3b8a2a337e1dcba14dd8da3dc57995ac6c71be74&dummyext=prev.png
Tertiary Colors: Gloom-Thistle
Much like Unhealthy Homunculi, Corrupted Homuncului are not corrupted or evil like their name would suggest.
Magicless Homunculi
dragon?age=1&body=9&bodygene=5&breed=8&element=6&eyetype=5&gender=1&tert=2&tertgene=14&winggene=3&wings=146&auth=682388ea4f5a7d624291153b30b5f0f949281d76&dummyext=prev.png
Tertiary Colors: Maize-Smoke
Magicless Homunculi are created when not enough of something is added during creation process.
Corrupted/Magicless Hybrid Homunculi
dragon?age=1&body=5&bodygene=1&breed=6&element=10&eyetype=8&gender=0&tert=23&tertgene=14&winggene=4&wings=70&auth=53a35a5b1e89d6a44931aec7e3f1f021cda1103b&dummyext=prev.png
Tertiary Colors: Splash-Steel and Caribbean-Robin
Often deemed complete failures, these hybrids are often the result of those rushing the creation process, failing to purify and wait for their creation to be 'born'.
Decayed Homunculi
dragon?age=1&body=6&bodygene=9&breed=7&element=8&eyetype=4&gender=1&tert=162&tertgene=14&winggene=5&wings=70&auth=fe87ed34143945b90f4d956779333fa8fbb4283d&dummyext=prev.png Tertiary Colors: Cinnamon - Rust
Decayed Homunculi are rare horrors in their subspecies.

Natural Homunculi
dragon?age=1&body=7&bodygene=17&breed=10&element=3&eyetype=1&gender=0&tert=113&tertgene=14&winggene=4&wings=5&auth=0663642190d9b01438eb57d9e80c052a6fa4ee03&dummyext=prev.png Tertiary Colors: Emerald - Moss
This variant is spawned by a creator using a mix of the natural magic in the environment and their own magic.

Overcharged Homunculi
dragon?age=1&body=131&bodygene=1&breed=13&element=7&eyetype=7&gender=1&tert=109&tertgene=14&winggene=2&wings=4&auth=e8cb4dadcf41cb54f7c5cc994d2a7166e8850120&dummyext=prev.png Tertiary Colors: Cottoncandy - Pearl
Overcharged Homunculi earned their name for a reason. Born when too much magic is poured into the creation process, these homunculi are well-known for their magical instability. While they rarely need recharging, they cannot hold it as easily as their more stable brethren. It is not uncommon for their magic to 'leak' into the environment, harming it or other dragons. This variant is also physically unstable due to this, and they often have to be physically reinforced more often than they need magical recharging. As such, these are often accidentally made, and are only kept around until their first charge runs out, only being useful for the emotional blank slate that they have.

Royal Homunculi

These homunculi get their name from their initial purpose. Originally created to serve as obedient servants, the cost of them meant that usually only high-ranking individuals could afford to have multiples made. Nowadays, they are commonly referred to as Programmed Homunculi, though their official name remains the same. Created with a certain personality or a certain combinations of emotions to help aid in their assigned role. Caution has to be taken in the process though, as Corrupted Homunculi can be easily created instead of a Royal one.

Warm Homunculi

Warm Homunculi have their origins in the Southern Icefield, where they were specifically made to emit fire magic to help keep clans warm in the bitter cold winters. The name stuck even after other elements were made though, referring to the color of their markings. This variant is praised for its stability and magical capacity, but at the cost of needing to be recharged more often since they constantly emit magic. Each element serves its own purpose, some being helpful while other have usually served more nefarious purposes in the past.

Sponge Homunculi
dragon?age=1&body=131&bodygene=9&breed=6&element=2&eyetype=0&gender=1&tert=90&tertgene=14&winggene=4&wings=91&auth=ce6021b15ac095ea22c8df5aa24df093111eeef7&dummyext=prev.png Tertiary Colors: Storm - Lapis, Denim - Azure
Similar to Natural Homunculi, Sponge Homunculi are created to absorb residual magic that remains in an area. However, due to being created without the magical influence of the territory they are in means that they cannot absorb the magic naturally produced by the territory. However, they are born with much larger magic reservoirs, which are utilized to aid in cleaning up areas where large amounts of residual magic may be present, such as the aftermath of a large battle. They are born with an emotional blank slate, but caution must be taken around the recently deceased, or they may develop emotions from absorbing the magic released by them.

Sponge/Natural Hybrid Homunculi
dragon?age=1&body=98&bodygene=1&breed=5&element=8&eyetype=1&gender=1&tert=125&tertgene=14&winggene=10&wings=7&auth=825ac6654585345f682671f64cb9291a8901e93e&dummyext=prev.png Tertiary Colors: Aqua - Peacock
Sponge/Natural Hybrids are relatively easy to make, but hard to perfect. They fall into two categories: those that can choose whether or not to absorb naturally produced and residual magic, and those who cannot. The latter suffer a mix of problems not dissimilar to Overcharged homunculi, as they can easily absorb too much magic. Both variety are often quick to gain emotions and become conscious of their existence, but they serve a large batteries capable of sustaining themselves on the environment alone, making necessary recharges a rare occurrence.

A piece of yellowed parchment and quill pen, along with a silver broadsword, are in the middle of the badge.
