Sorin the apprentice gulped. The whole lair could now be full of hostiles, run over by this strange influence. His mind instantly went to Eser. Please be okay Essy…
The small Fae looked to the watch-dragon, Merrick.

He simply looked back. Not one for words, apparently.
Act natural, Sorin thought. He picked up his bag of treasure and dragged it to the lab where he and Eser worked. Merrick followed behind, helping him with the heavier load. They entered a room sprawled with lab tables, covered completely in strange looking equipment and flasks filled with brightly colored chemicals. Inside was a rose colored Pearlcatcher, heating one of the flasks over a bright blue flame.
“Ah, you’re back,” he said, not bothering to look up from his experiment. “Did the potions sell? We need that treasure for Bee Orchids, they only grow this time of year you know.”
“Uh yep, all sold,” Sorin said, trying to keep his voice from squeaking. “Pretty uh… pretty boring trip. Merrick here helped me with the bags…”
“Uh huh.” Well at least Eser was fine. No imposter could equal his level of obliviousness.
“Hey!” A midnight blue Skydancer, accented with the signature bright cyan of the Lightning flight, poked his head into the lab. “No unauthorized dragons in the lab!”
Merrick silently looked over at the Skydancer, and then back to Sorin. He quietly slithered back out of the room and disappeared into the shadows.
“And you two, no lazying around!”
Ever just rolled his eyes and continued on his work.
“Uh… is there something wrong with Barek?” Sorin asked, afraid the uncharacteristic hostility may implicate his friend.
“He’s just on edge,” Eser replied. “We’ve had a string of accidents today.”
“Accidents?”
“Yeah. Hey, can you hand me that…”
Ever twisted his body to point at another flask on the table behind him, but as soon as he turned his back to the flask over the flame, the glass shattered with a pop, spewing the unknown chemical over the Pearlcatcher’s arm.
“Blasted Arcanist… That’s not something I want on my scales…”
“Is everything alright? I heard a noise…”

Another dragon poked his head into the lab, this time belonging to Doc, one of two healers in the lair.
“Yeah, if you could heal this before it turns into a nasty burn that’d be super.”
The large Imperial squeezed his way into the lab, careful not to disturb any more equipment. His scales glowed a bright blue for a second, and then a mint green aura wafted over the Pearlcatcher’s body. Within a minute, the burn was all but a memory.
“Be careful there,” Doc tipped his hat. “We’ve been having a lot of accidents today.”
Soren narrowed his eyes. “Hey Essy, has Doc been…?”
Ever didn’t immediately return to his broken experiment, and instead started meandering towards the door. His sluggish movements were quite odd.
“Uh, aren’t you going to clean this up?”
“Maybe later, I’m feeling a bit tired.”
Well now something was definitely wrong. Sorin zipped out of the lab and quickly found Doc. He flew right up to the Imperial’s face.
“It’s you!” the little Fae said, pointing one of his little claws right into his nose. “You’re the imposter! Just wait until I tell…”
Doc, or whoever this dragon was, maliciously grinned. “Oh? Tell who now?” He began walking into the tiny Fae, who now realized just how powerless he was against the titan of a dragon.
“Um… E-essy?”
“I don’t think you’re going to tell anyone,” the imposter threatened.
“Oh, sorry to interrupt.”
The two dragons glanced back down the hallway. Merrick was sitting there, grasping a small purple snake within his claws.

“Is this yours? I found it slithering around the lab in the shadows. Certainly sneakier than the ones I fight on the delta. Seems a bit odd, don’t you think?”
The imposter growled.
Without saying another word, Merrick ran through the Imperial’s legs with the speed of a trained fighter and nipped the Fae by the scruff of his scarf. He ran into a darkened part of the lair, and flipped open a secret pathway leading outside.
“Go tell Shadowsong,” the Mirror instructed. “I’ll keep an eye on our friend, assuming he doesn’t run off with his tail between his legs.”

Bubbles is young, but has a penchant for magic like very few do. She came to the clan while they were in the crystalline lands of Arcane and, despite her heritage, is an Arcanite at heart. The stars are her friends, her mentors, and when the fog obscured them...
The Watchdragon: Cotton

Starsky is not a violent clan, far from it. They have no need for more guards than one, and Cotton certainly does his job well. He takes it very seriously, having lost his family to the shade plague along with many others in the clan. Some would say his guilt over it drives him to go far beyond that of normal guard duty, placing himself in danger to protect his clan. As stoic and silent as he may be, there is no mistaking the panic and despair in his eyes at seeing his clan taken by something he can't control... again.

Perfect was always... strange. She has strange markings and growths for a Nocturne, some likening them to the mythological winged creatures with halos of light. Usually, Perfect is just... there. Observing and using her strange power of truth detection to make sure the clan is safe from any sort of imposters. However, she had been acting strange, even for her. Her observing had a sinister tinge to it. The strange glow on her chest had dimmed. With her out of the way, Starsky didn't stand a chance.
The mimic:
[item=golden bantam fangar]
The clan leader's fangar is very much the love and joy of the clan. It's small, cute, and absolutely loves everyone. Usually. He grew violent very suddenly, and while such a small, fat animal didn't pose much of a threat, seeing the 'clan pet' suddenly hate everything was jarring. They were far too worried about him to notice themselves falling prey.

On any normal day, August would never be too far from his mentor's side. It was only a coincidence that the clan leader had sent him on an errand that day. Otherwise he too may have been caught up in all this. Shade-touched before he even hatched, August has always been more attuned to darker magics, though he is still honing his skills in a major way. Being apprenticed to the clan leader - and much like an adopted son to the old spiral - certainly has its perks for him. He is definitely not prepared for this turn his training has taken though. Trying to root out an imposter is definitely not in his skill set

Upon coming to the clan at Red Hearth, though, he turned his skills to protecting those he now resided with. Though no stranger to the workings of the Shade and all things dark and mysterious, Era'elgar has never been the malicious sort. He's the protector of his clan, and if he must use darker means to do that, then so be it. He, nor his council, would never wish ill on any of their kin. Ahren is a very new addition to the clan. Since being rescued by Shadowsong she has taken to carrying a small bag of unknown contents and some enchanted candles to make her feel safer. It's doubtful they'd actually protect her from anything but she keeps them close anyway.

Flake is not a young dragon, but that doesn't mean she acts it. She loves nothing more than fighting monsters, though was retired from coliseum fighting in favour of younger dragons. She was relocated to the Watch, which she enjoys more, because she actually gets to hunt things down before she battles them. The Watch duty that saved her was one Rapture sent her on: she was set to retrieve a malfunctioning robot that managed to escape the lair. Rapture would have done it himself, but he had to secure the lair and make sure no other bots got out. So much for secure...

Nobody would suspect Vaughan. He lives and breathes peace, and he brings irresistable serenity and tranquility with him wherever he goes. A challenge for this mimic, but it enjoys challenges... Vaughan also greets every dragon daily with a handshake and a few words between them, which makes spreading the infection even easier. The massive Imperial was the obvious choice. The hippie getup isn't great, but the joy of having found the absolute perfect candidate to impersonate outweighs that negative by a long shot.
The Mimic

Vaughan's Agol is technically a mimic as it is, and it's not quite as calm as Vaughan is himself, so nobody would suspect a thing if the Agol maybe bit or scratched a few dragons to spread the mimic's disease even faster... It's nowhere near as shiny as Vaughan's actual familiar, though, but that's just one of the perks of it being the mimic's first time impersonating something for real.
--
Ahren was finding it extremely challenging to keep hidden. All the dragons wanted to touch her, to see if she was ok after flying into a tree and nearly losing the bag of coins, but she had to flee before they could. A few dragons in particular were especially "worried": Eboende the Reach-mother, Shade and Lithium the mages, and the young, nameless Mirror that had joined the clan just yesterday. She couldn't be too careless around any of the dragons though; the imposter could just be spurring those four to take an interest in her to keep the attention off the real threat. Ahren may have been young compared to many of the other dragons of the Reach, but she wasn't stupid.
--
"Vaughan" left his den at the start of that day and made Vaughan's rounds within the clan, talking to everyone, saying hello, how're you doing, you work for me now... He could get used to having power over a clan like this, a clan with working robot guards! If they had these back home... He tried not to let himself get too distracted by the power, because he had come upon the knowledge over that week that at least two dragons hadn't been affected by the curse yet. They were very elusive, he didn't see them much; they left before the lair woke up and came back very late at night to sleep in the empty rooms close to the entrance. He'd been telling four dragons to keep an eye on each suspect- the haunted Skydancer, the drummer, the Bogsneak and the necromancer were to watch the male leader, that shiny one with the white clothes, the mages and the tiny purple Mirror were to see to the green Nocturne with the candles, and the female leader, the iron-clad Mirror, the brown piebald Skydancer and the courier were to keep a collective eye on the white Wildclaw with the suit of gold armour. If they looked too suspicious then "Vaughan" would strike. He thought about looking for them himself, but he might blow his cover, which he had no intention of doing. By the sounds of things only the Nocturne and the Wildclaw weren't infected, and they had a ward, too, they wouldn't let anyone near them in case it broke the ward. Interesting... "Vaughan" would strike that night, as they slept.
--
Flake's time in the Watch taught her that you have to be cautious of everything, and to not judge a book by its cover. Kaagniryol, Sam, Boulder and Xenophanes were taking an unusual interest in her, watching her every move with too-sharp eyes. Every time she left the lair Xenophanes would follow; when asked what he was doing he would simply reply with, "I'm a courier." Well, today, a week after meeting Shadowsong, she would lead him far away, the Southern Icefield, maybe? and see if that changed his behaviour any.
Sure enough, it did.
Whatever was controlling him lost reception as they left the Windswept Plateau, and Xeno looked genuinely confused as to where he was. When questioned, he revealed that the last thing he remembered before waking up in flight over the sea was Vaughan, the clan's longest dragon, standing over him with horrific, claggy, magical fog pouring from his mouth. It was safe to assume that "Vaughan" would be back in control of Xeno's mind as they got back within range of the lair, and it was also safe to assume that the doppelgänger would set the massive Guardian on the armoured Wildclaw and kill her, which would mean the end of the clan because Ahren didn't know...
Flake made for the lair again. She had never flown so fast in her life and would probably never fly so fast again.
--
"AHREN!" the rabid scream split Ahren's ears as Flake shot back towards the Reach faster than a centaur's arrow.
"Flake! What happened? Where's Xeno?" the Nocturne spluttered. She's seen Flake leave and make for the Windswept Plateau with the Guardian tailing her earlier that day. She thought the worst, but...
"He's fine, I got him far enough away that the imposter lost control of him. He's still there, otherwise I'd die and you wouldn't know- oh, what am I saying, it's-"
There was his familiar, that backwards creature, the Agol. It growled. Loudly. It was shrouded in that horrible fog, but even there it could be seen that it was not so shiny and clean as Vaughan's real familiar.
And then Vaughan was standing in the gap in the rocks, out of nowhere, also surrounded by the unnatural fog. There was a condescending look on his face that seemed so unnatural on such an apparently peaceful dragon. He laughed an evil laugh and shooed the dull Agol towards the conversing dragons.
"So you found me, hmm?" he said, in a voice that was not his own. "Took you long enough... You know, I suspected you from the start of not having succumbed to my infection. You're bright dragons, both of you... Just not bright enough."
Flake calmly answered, "If you suspected us, why did you not just infect us right off the bat? Would save you a lot of hassle." She examined Vaughan's imposter with cold, unblinking eyes. A plan formed in her head: flee with Ahren; don't kill him. Find Shadowsong. Put an end to it.
Flake subtly wrapped a claw around Ahren's. Then she bolted, still holding the Nocturne's hand, before the Imperial could answer, and made for where Ahren had first been found by the black Nocturne.
The Apprentice
Ahren is a very new addition to the clan. Since being rescued by Shadowsong she has taken to carrying a small bag of unknown contents and some enchanted candles to make her feel safer. It's doubtful they'd actually protect her from anything but she keeps them close anyway.
The Watchdragon
Flake is not a young dragon, but that doesn't mean she acts it. She loves nothing more than fighting monsters, though was retired from coliseum fighting in favour of younger dragons. She was relocated to the Watch, which she enjoys more, because she actually gets to hunt things down before she battles them. The Watch duty that saved her was one Rapture sent her on: she was set to retrieve a malfunctioning robot that managed to escape the lair. Rapture would have done it himself, but he had to secure the lair and make sure no other bots got out. So much for secure...
The Imposter

Ahren was finding it extremely challenging to keep hidden.
