NIGHTHOWLER
A Plague Subspecies
Description:
Nighthowlers are diseased dragons who have succumbed to a strain of infection similar to lycanthropy. As the disease progresses, the dragon becomes more feral and aggressive, their characteristics becoming more wolf-like. Their visages' shift into wolven features; including fur, ears, and longer muzzles. They are were-dragons with a lust for carnage, which includes collecting (and often wearing) skulls, bones, feathers and other trophies. They also tend to dye their wings crimson with the blood of their prey. The disease they suffer from is highly contagious and these plague wolves take great pleasure in spreading this infection to both adult dragons and unhatched eggs.

Accepted Tertiary Colors:

History:
The first Nighthowlers were born of the Wyrmwound. Generation One dragons whose eggs matured in the veritable cauldron of pestilence and disease.
Symptoms:
An infected bite or claw wound will heal at an increased rate. The infected will also notice a mild fatigue and malaise that progresses into painful body aches and an elevated body temperature. Mentally, most manifest an increasingly agitated and irritable state of mind. The infected can exhibit unusually violent urges or outbursts as the infection progresses, and often complain of vivid, disturbing nightmares which disrupt sleep. In most cases the virus needs between 7-14 days to take over the body fully enough to allow the genetic shift. The transformation is always agonizing. The amount of mental distress and trauma from the attack seems to have some effect on this, but it is not certain.
Some, approximately 10%, of the infected do not survive the transformation. Possibly due to age, ailing health, or other unforeseen factors. There are also some dragon breeds who seem to have a natural resistance to the disease. Once having experienced and survived the transformation, the new Nighthowler is contagious to others. There are no asymptomatic carriers of this disease.
Lifestyle:
Most Nighthowlers seek the bond and strength of living and interacting with a pack, clan, or mate. The majority are hunters and warriors by nature, though there are some who have taken up the role of mystics, and others who are strictly caretakers or protectors of their packs hatchlings. There are also a rare few who are lone wolves, preferring a life of solitude.
Personality:
Nighthowlers take pleasure in spreading their disease because they see it as a gift from their mother (The Plaguebringer) and seek to bestow this favor onto others they deem worthy. Such as those that prove themselves in battle or unhatched eggs which are more susceptible to infection. They take their mother's words 'as we spread, we thrive' to heart.
Breeding:
WIP
Addtional Notes:
As this disease is being spread through bite, claw, and by other contamination, all eye colors are allowed (especially for Gen One dragons). Though Plague nests are required for breeding.
