I love little apparel tricks, one of my favorites is layering feathered tails over wooly tails (particularly on Skydancers) though I don't have any dragons modeling that look at the moment.
Too tired to go searching through my lair for all these little tricks so I'll just leave my two favorites. Sirius, my werewolf Earth Ambassador (because Earth is totally all about werewolves, right? :P). I layered a bunch of stuff over the wolf cape to hide the paws so it looks like he's actually got a wolf's head.

The Red hood with the red lab coat on lady PCs makes it look like the thing is some sort of red cloak garb. Also when laired over the white plague make it looks extra creepy.
