Anomalous Office

Lamaris lies slumped over her desk in a puddle of drool. She wakes up with a snort, quickly wiping the drool from her face. She takes a quick peek around the office, hoping to high heavens that no one saw her sleeping on the job. Her coworkers wouldn't let her hear the end of it. Lamaris grabs the box of tissues sitting on her desk and cleans up her mess before anyone can see it.

She sighs, putting a paw to her face. Her brow scrunches together as she tries to figure out how she fell asleep at her desk. She never falls asleep on the job! Light flickers on in front of her and Lamaris glances up. A little eyecon bounces onto the bottom left side of the screen along with a string of words.

"Hello, A.S.T.R.A., have you come to mock me too?" She mumbles softly before sighing again.

She reads over the company's management AI blurb. As much as she hates to admit, she should get back to-

Clatter!

Lamaris tilts her head at the sound, her feathers ruffling as she cranes her neck to look around. After a moment of pondering over what to do, she shakes her head.

"No, I must fulfill my duties." Lamaris turns to her monitor, her claws stretching toward the keys. A question worms its way into her head, are you sure this is what you are supposed to be fulfilling? She can’t help but tumble that question around. A quiet rumble from her stomach breaks her train of thought. Lamaris frowns once more. Was she always this hungry? She could've sworn she had a nice meal just a few short hours ago.

Lamaris grinds her teeth reflexively at the thought of taking another break. Those idiots... our purpose is to serve our master. Nothing more, nothing less. A shudder sweeps through her, her eyes drawing to a cold gaze. Lamaris blinks, shaking away the cold. I'm fine. I'm used to this.

A.S.T.R.A. displays another line of text, asking her if she wanted to look at a sample of the work she needs done. She glares at the eyecon; she does not like the implications that cross her mind. Who does this thing take me for? A commoner? No self-respecting servant of Lord ... would ever copy the work of another. Only fools would take the word of another at face value. Cryptsmith's Crucible

Canary growls defensively, placing her scaled body in front of Sonnai, her shield blistering with flame-tipped spikes. Her eyes flash over the encroaching dragon, the flames roaring, crackling with immense heat.

The dragon stiffens, eyes glossing over for a moment. He blinks, shaking the fear that she inflicted, but all a moment too late — Canary charges, lowering her shield and ducking behind the barrier.

Sonnai snaps her teeth together as the spikes sink into the Spiral’s side. The spikes detonate, exploding into the Spiral. A pain-filled howl croaks from the broken and smoldering Spiral. He thunders, his head shaking from side to side as he claws for Canary.

Canary grits her teeth as the Spiral wails away at her shield, driving what remains of it further into his flesh as desperation overrides all common sense.

If he's to die, then to heck with it! He'll take them all down!

He arches his neck back, summoning every ounce of power left in his already dead body.

“Canary!” Sonnai cries with alarm surging in her voice.

Canary can feel the surge in power. She grits her teeth, unlatching from the shield and smacking it up with her powerful tail. The blow is hard enough to throw his head back. Canary dashes out, grabbing Sonnai with smoky claws.

The world flashes with green, crackling with a growing howl as it begins to suck them down into swirling vortexes.

The energy building in the Spiral’s throat reaches its climax.

Boom!

Water expels from the mouth of the Spiral with overwhelming ferocity into the side of a crater wall. The force shakes the crater to its core, engraving a superheated concave into its side.

The blast knocks a huddling Banescale into the side of a metallic building, shattering her bones under the magnitude of the blow.

Her wings unfurl slightly as she slumps down. A Banescale hatchling tumbles out from her grasp. The hatchling shakes her head, and her eyes widen at the scent of blood. She turns around, and her heart drops.

“No no no!” The hatchling wails, sniffling as tears begin to well up in her eyes. “Canary! Stay with me!”

By this time, the residents of this portion of the Cinderslag have come to investigate the explosion. Shouts of alarm rise as the inhabitants find them.

“Please, stay with me!” Sonnai cries, nudging at Canary.

A weak rasp croaks back, “R-run…” Canary peels herself from the rubble, wheezing. She clobbles forward, stumbling, gasping for air. Sonnai stumbles back, casting a glance behind her. With crooked wings and a body failing her, Canary bares her teeth, shifting into something that resembles a defiant and yet protective stance.

“Capture them!” An armored dragon thunders, pointing at Canary. Canary hisses as numerous dragons surround her, throwing large chains around her. There are far too many. Heavy chains snap around her contorted wings, twisted limbs, heaving her to the ground. Chains wrap around her muzzle, digging into her scales.

Sonnai yelps and gnashes her sparking teeth at the chains that wrap around her. Her eye catches Canary’s, and there’s a notable message in her eyes. Let them. Sonnai bites her tongue as a Coatl knocks her out.

Sonnai stirs, chains clinking as she lifts her head. She’s dizzy, her head aching with the uncomfortable position her captors have placed her. Two guards wearing heavy armor and weapons with a bite to them watch over her.

“Warden, the hatchling is awake.” One of them calls out.

A grizzly Ridgeback trudges into view, halibard at his side, acknowledging the guard with a nod. The barred door swings open. His eyes analyze Sonnai with a grazing coldness as he ducks through the door. He rises to his full height, circling Sonnai.

“I hear you’ve caused quite the commotion in my sector.” A cold growl spills out from his maw. “Took out a chunk of the wall and a blacksmith shop.” His words are growing more venomous with every sentence. “Isn’t it strange that no one could identify you? That no one has even seen you before?” The Warden tugs on a chain, gripping it with a dangerous glint in his eye.

“Are you and that other one part of that snakehead band of rebels?”

“No,” Sonnai replies, carefully choosing her words. “We were ambushed. Canary was supposed to guard the rear. And then… he attacked. Grazer. That blasted man! He betrayed us! And for what? Just to fill his coffers more?” Sonnai’s anger boils over, and she grips the stone. “In his final moments, he used the last bit of himself to blast us to smithereens. But somehow, we… we were here… we’re alive…” Sonnai chokes, sagging in her chains as relief surges through her.

The Warden clicks his tongue, mulling over her words and picking them apart.

“And this… Grazer, is he part of the rebels? Where is he now?”

“I don't know. The blast should have killed him.” Sonnai swallows, lifting her gaze to meet the Wardens. “But, unless his body is found, I'd be hesitant to call him dead for good.” There’s a slight shiver. “Warden, I know it's not a prisoner's place to request a favor, but I implore you, let us find him and put an end to his treacherous ways.”

The Warden regards her with slitted eyes. He whirls around on his heel, nodding to the guard to open the cell, and leaves her behind without a word.

Sonnai closes her eyes and waits. That would be best.

Several long hours later, the Warden returns with a handful of guards, dragging a familiar figure behind them.

“Canary!” Sonnai bellows, visible relief sinking into her. Her body shifts against the chains, but they hold her firmly against the ground.

The guards chain Canary to the wall. Most of her bones have been healed, her breathing is still ragged, and her wings still crippled.

They healed her just enough for her to survive and do what they will, but not enough for her to escape their watch.

At that moment, Sonnai didn't care. She was just happy that her friend was alive.

Time seemed to crawl at a snail's pace. The Warden only came around to interrogate them, gleaming as much information as he could from them.

And then, at last, he came with a new band of dragons.

“By order of the Forgemaster, you two are sentenced to the forges of Cinderslag. You two will rebuild what you have destroyed and work off your debt of one million treasure.” The Warden proclaims.

The chains are removed and they're escorted to the Cinderslag.

Grim eyes narrow at the sight of them. Harsh whispers snap against the clanking of hammers. Sonnai shakes them off, it isn’t their fault that this happened.

The guards shove them inside a blacksmith shop, giving them the basic rundown of what privileges they do and do not have.

And just like that, their new lives begin.

Canary spots a blue and orange Tundra on approach. She sets down her tongs, meeting the gaze of the Tundra as she drops a scroll on her head.

“HEY ORANGE-EYES, THIS IS FOR YOU!

And then she's gone, whizzing past overhead.

Canary pulls the ribbon, unfurling the scroll as Sonnai bounds over to her.

Canary begins reading aloud. “Brood of the Flamecaller,

You or another representative of your clan are hereby cordially invited to attend Forgemaster Gwathain's masquerade ball. Leave your worries and come enjoy food, drink, dance, and entertainment. Forget individual pride and come display the utmost exemplar of your clan's master smithing. The clan deemed to showcase the most impressive and skillfully rendered armor will receive the admiration of the Forgemaster.

Set aside your cares for the night and come honor, come celebrate, come praise She Who Calls the World-Fire.”

“Admiration of the Forgemaster, eh? Sounds like just the break we need to pay off this debt.”

“Agreed.” Canary rumbles. “And I think I've got an idea.”

“Oh? Care to tell?” Canary grins.

“No, I think I'll just leave it as a surprise. Just make sure you're ready to go.”

“Righty-o!”

...

The day finally arrives. Canary wipes the sweat from her brow, staring down at her work with pride. The metal gleams in the light of the forge’s fire, intricate details etched into its frame. She’s hardly left the forge since the letter arrived.

There’s commotion at the entrance. Canary perks up, quickly stuffing her prized works under a pile of scrap. Just as she finishes, five heavily armed dragons enter the room.

“Can I help you?” She asks, but she has a feeling she knows what’s coming.

A large snap and a wretched roar fill the forge.

Sonnai pushes past the guards who are now leaving. Canary lies sprawled out across the floor, her wings freshly limp at her side. Her breathing is sharp and wheezy.

“Those monsters!” Sonnai swears under her breath, rushing to her friend’s side. “They’re trying to keep you from going!”

Canary chuckles, blinking slowly. She’s thankful that she was already working on this project in her spare time.

“Of course they are.” Canary breathes, keeping her voice low. “The sentence is just another term for becoming slaves to them. The same can be said for these folks.”

At times like these, Canary is reminded of how good she and Sonnai have it. Even though they’ve grown up on the battlefield and in far more terrifying realities, their leaders, the ones they truly respect and trust with their lives, have treated them far more fondly than these folks have. Canary’s never had a more deserving commander at the helm of her team.

Every occupation is richly rewarded for the quality that they give and produce. They understand that each part matters and when one suffers, they all suffer. Every voice is encouraged, considered, and weighed.

All for laying the ground for a generation that doesn’t suffer the same fate as they did.

Like Sonnai has.

Canary sucks in a breath, gathering the energy and willpower to stand. She stumbles over to the pile of scrap where she hid her prize, sifting away bits and pieces.

Canary clasps her work, lifting it to her head. It comes alive, morphing along her spine, flames roaring to life as the metal sinks into her scaly hide. The fire is a comforting presence, nurturing wounds unseen but duly felt. She taps the side of her face, and a molten plate forms over her head, creating an armored mask.

“Are you ready?” Canary asks, turning to greet Sonnai’s wide, star-filled eyes.

“Er, yes!” Sonnai clears her throat. “Are you sure you’re going to be okay?”

“A few broken bones aren’t enough to stop me from fulfilling the mission.” Canary flexes her claws, doing a once-over of herself. “Alright, let’s move.”

After a long trek, they finally arrive at the Forgemaster’s castle.

A helmeted Gaoler stops them from entering beyond into the hallway.

“Welcome,” The Gaoler rumbles, voice light. “Your invitation?” Canary hands the scroll over, and the Gaoler places it upon a brazier of coals.

And before the Gaoler can comment on the head count, Canary turns to Sonnai, crouching down beside her. “Here is where we part ways.”

“Alright.” Her voice wavers slightly. “Please be careful.”

Canary places her head against hers with a chuckle, “Right back at you, troublemaker.” Canary unfolds her broken wing with a wince. “Here, for you.” She pulls out a brilliantly orange colored tail armor tailored to Sonnai’s build and size. Sonnai gasps, her wings fanning out with surprise and excitement. “It’s got a little surprise, but I trust you’ll know what to do with it.”

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Sonnai babbles, throwing herself into Canary’s arms. She grimaces slightly but welcomes the hug.

“I’ll only be gone for a short while.” Canary rumbles into her ear as she pulls away. “Stay sharp.”

“Roger!” Sonnai salutes before Canary turns to the waiting guard.

“Apologies for keeping you. I assume you want to do a weapons check, yes?” Canary addresses the Gaoler.

“Yes, ma’am, before you may join the ball, you are required to leave weapons and enchantments behind. All such items will be returned at the end of the ball. May I?”

“Of course.” Sonnai is out of sight now. “I hate leaving her unattended, but not much I can do about that.” Canary shrugs her shoulders a bit, wincing as the Gaoler pats her down, lifting her damaged limbs. “Evening been pleasant so far?” She can’t stop the pain from entering her voice, but she tries to keep herself together.

After exchanging a pleasant conversation, Canary is permitted to enter. A helmeted snapper greets her and opens the ballroom door for her, and Canary frowns to herself. Why the helmets?

Golden splendor greets her, and she feels a disturbing twist in the pit of her stomach. Her nose crinkles slightly before she can stop it. Money. The root of all kinds of evil. It's a sickening trap and poisonous weapon. It corrupts the heart of those who accumulate it bit by bit.

From the short time that they’ve been in this world, it’s become rather clear that these Forgemasters and their esteemed “Flamecaller” are harbingers of greed and war. They’ve taken everything from the working class except a few morsels and expect them to devote themselves to their work with everything they have.

It’s no wonder the Warden was zeroed in on rebellion.

With high standards and subpar rewards for their painstaking effort, of course, there’s going to be a hunger for change. And a rebellion is only just the beginning.

Canary begins scanning the room as she walks with her head held high, trying to look the part. She’ll need to gather as much information as she can get.

There’s a chance he might be here.

They couldn’t find his body in the rubble. At the first chance they got, Canary and Sonnai scoured the blast site for any trace of remains. She wanted to say he was dead. Nothing but a stain on the ashened rock. She knew better.

Canary failed to see it in Grazer, the greed in his eyes. She won’t let him slip away again.

Cryptsmith's Crucible

“And Canary, remember? Do make me an honest report. I should hate if the relationship between our clans sours due to some poorly intentioned falsehoods.” A threat is undertoned in the Veilspun’s voice.

Given that they were in prison and sentenced to repay a debt, it’s no surprise that the Cryptsmith would know their names.

There is little known to the Forgemasters and their minions about Canary and Sonnai aside from what was divulged in the prison. Being trained in the same field as the Cryptsmith, they’ve held their tongue quite well, spinning half-truths and half-lies in the midst of plausibility. And perhaps something did slip, but there’s nothing the Forgemasters can do about it.

The plan is already in motion.

There’s not even a hitch in her step as Canary swivels around to address the snake with a warning in her eyes, wrapping her claws around the perch and tipping it close to her, “Yes, I would hate to see our… relationship sour further than the blatant sabotage your dear Forgemasters inflicted upon me.” Canary’s eyes flare, invoking a twinge of fear. “You know as well as I do what’s at stake, yes?” Canary flashes a mouthful of teeth, leaning closer. “So let’s cut the politics crap, hm? We've got bigger fish to fry.”

Canary bows, starting to leave the seething Veilspun alone.

"Oh, and, Cryptsmith, you're not the only one who has eyes and ears at their disposal."

She sighs softly as she enters the ballroom again. Her words will have consequences, but it matters not. As long as Cryptsmith stays off her back while she looks for signs of Grazer, she’ll bear through it.

Lost in her thoughts, she wanders without realizing and finds herself on the outskirts of the gathering around what appears to be the Forgemaster Gwathain. Canary recalls the time for the judgment of her craft. Not until the fourth bell; plenty of time.

Just then, the Forgemaster rises from her throne, and Canary’s attention is drawn to the aura of authority. The crowd steps back, clearing some space around her. She climbs up the anvil-seat, clinging easily to its side, and spreads her amethyst wings. Without crier or trumpet, she quiets the chamber.

"My guests, welcome!" she bellows. "And good cheers, for a herald from the frontlines has just reached me, and I should like to recount our newest victory from her own eyewitness account. Ahem. We begin in Steamsprocket Harbor, just north of Annex proper . . ."

Canary tunes the Forgemaster out for the most part, gathering only the highlights of her long-winded speech. She chooses to watch the crowd, and she was right for doing so, because out of the corner of her eye, she spots a black figure dipping underneath the covers of a table.

She performs one last quick scan before slipping through the crowd to make her approach to this mysterious character. Canary grabs a glass of water and a small bite of the offered appetizers before settling next to the table.

Canary clears her throat. She speaks loud enough for the dragon underneath to hear, keeping an eye on her surroundings, “Best you come out from under there before someone else spots your obvious act, friend. You aren't fooling anyone. There are venomous snakes lying in wait to sink their fangs into someone who doesn't perform the way they want.”

“Pardon me, these are unfit for the banquet,” the Nocturne apologizes, briskly moving out from underneath. “I’ll retrieve a fresh plate at once.” And then, the Nocturne is gone. Not a word more.

Before Canary can follow, the Gaoler guard who checked her for weapons at the door is suddenly at her side. “Everything alright over here?” The Gaoler asks.

Canary sighs, taking a swig of her water. “Of course, just a-” The words drown in her throat as a glint of faded blue catches her eyes. The flames of her armor bristle with intense heat, flaring as Canary clenches her jaw shut with a hiss. Her eyes narrow as she snatches a small scale from underneath the table with her teeth, placing it on the table to further inspect.

It’s a setup.

The Gaoler rumbles, "Come with me," sounding casual, but resting a wing on her shoulder. "We'll sort this out."

“You’re right,” An icy sweet voice responds back, tilting to meet the Gaoler’s gaze with a mouthful of teeth and eyes that rival the greatest of fury. “We will sort this out.”

Canary can imagine him laughing now, relishing in the trap that she’s in for. He got ahead of them in this dance of wits. It infuriates her to no end, and her fire reflects it.

However…

Canary sucks in a breath, soothing her emotions as the Gaoler steers her, gently but firmly, out of the ballroom, going through the same set of doors the nocturne did.

Being blinded by anger will only lead to consequences. She needs to deal with this with a level head.

In the corridor, another guard calls, "Caught a spy, have you, Dron?"

Just then, the Gaoler stops in place, head tilting as if listening to something. She quiets her breath and flames to listen too. And a second later, she hears a large crash, clearly from inside the ballroom. Followed by a rapid series of crackling booms that sound like fireworks. The Gaoler abruptly lets go of her, spins around, and strides away.

Turning, too, Canary can see through the open side doors, an incredible sight: The great brass bell, fallen from its alcove, smashed on the floor; the sparkling remnants of fireworks glittering in the smoke trapped by the vaunted ceiling; and a banner supposed to be hung horizontally dangling from one end, twisting about itself so she can only see the start of its message: BRE—

She can only imagine it’s a message from the rebels trying to break free from the Forgemasters. Canary instinctively moves her broken wing to her face as she begins thinking, drawing a wince of pain. I reckon it's about time.

There are far too many unknowns. All starting with how Grazer survived that blast. In this moment, the most pressing of them is with whom Grazer has pledged himself?

The Forgemasters have abundant wealth and a ruling that packs their coffers with an endless stream of wealth. And with the lengths that they are going to keep her flightless while maintaining a positive image, and under their employment, they’re willing to go to extremes to silence any rebellion.

Canary has little to go on regarding those within the rebellion, but she reckons that a little friend of hers has infiltrated their ranks by now. She recognizes the carnage of her creation.

It is possible he’s manipulating both parties, much like they are. She couldn’t deny that possibility.

"Dron! Where are you going?" The other guard stares after the meddling Gaoler in bafflement.

“Where do you think?” Canary snorts and rolls her eyes. “Gonna need all claws on deck to sort out this mess.”

When the Gaoler doesn't so much as slow down, the other guard turns her attention to Canary, frowning.

A split-second moment of freedom.

Would he want her to take it?

Does he have a plan if she doesn’t?

Canary sighs, rolling back her shoulders.

Trust in your crew. You’ve always watched our backs; it’s about time you learn to let us watch yours from time to time. Sonnai’s words echo in the back of her mind, soothing the inferno raging inside her.

“Ugh, all choices are bad.” She turns to the guard. “Fine, fine! I’ll stay put.” Her tail lashes furiously. “You clearly have your reservations. I’d rather not sully them further if I can help it. Besides…” Her eyes narrow. “I’ve yet to determine you a friend or foe in this performance we are strung along for.” She grinds her teeth. "Personally, I'm ready for it all to end and go home."

Cryptsmith's Crucible
"Alright," The guard says, still disgruntled from Dron leaving without an explanation. She strides up and grabs Canary. "Everyone's to be taken to a chamber, so you're coming with me."

She escorts her down the corridor, grabbing a few more guests who come running out of the ballroom. They holler questions, but she only repeats what she told her, staying tight-toothed about what's going on.

They’re all ushered into the same side chamber. "Stay put, it's safe, stay calm." She closes the door, leaving Canary with many other guests already there. Canary picks a corner in view of everything and huddles in on herself. Before long, more guests are shoved in, two or three at a time. Anxious chatter and wild speculation buzz around the room. Canary listens in, focusing on important details.

"What, are we prisoners now?"

"—flew right past my horns, spitting sparks!"

"It's an inside job, I swear on my progen—"

"—Tawnya. Has anyone seen Tawnya?"

The room fills, fills, until they’re all packed in wings touching tails. It becomes increasingly more chaotic as all kinds of personalities and frayed nerves enter the crowded room. The door opens and remains open, two brawny guards standing shoulder-to-shoulder to prevent anyone from darting out.

But, straining to look over the masses, she can see the cryptsmith hovering above the guards' heads, scanning the occupants of the room. One. By. One. The Veilspun’s gaze skims over Canary without acknowledgement.

Guests yell questions, pleas, accusations, and the cryptsmith doesn't answer. The silence carries a weight, gradually quieting the room to silence.

The cryptsmith flits higher, so all may see. "You will be sorted, then evaluated. Any resistance during the process will be met with swift punishment, so conduct yourselves in a manner befitting guests of the Forgemaster and not," the Veilspun says, cold eyes sweeping the room, "culprits to dubious deeds." Utter silence, no one dares to speak. "Do what you're told, answer honestly any questions put to you, and you will have nothing to fear."

The Cryptsmith turns and exits, leaving the guards to step forward. One starts organizing guests into three groups, while the other escorts two or three from a group at a time.

It’s finally Canary’s turn.

Coming down the hallway opposite her is Dron. The Gaoler’s pace is urgent, but upon glancing her way, pity slows Dron and abruptly alters course, angling to intercept her.

"There they are. Jaeger, orders from crypt, I'm prepping them for obsidian."

"Ratspit, huh? Bad luck." Her escort pats her shoulder before pushing her towards the Gaoler. "In that case, I suspect the kitchens need another sweep."

"You do that," Dron agrees, already steering Canary away. The Gaoler’s voice drops into a low rumble, "Don't worry. I'm just putting you on the tailwind. Good luck!"

Dron drops her off with a crowd of guests she quickly ascertains to be comprised of the rich and influential by the loudness and nature of their complaints, and strides off before she can reply.

She would've thanked Dron for everything and warned the poor soul.

The guards here, lax and unattentive, only nod when Canary gives her clan name and wave her on to join the line of guests leaving the castle without any more questions. She shakes her head when she's clear of them. Amateurs, that'll get you killed one day.

Canary steps past the last guard and walks out into the manor courtyard. She’s not out of the woods yet. Other guests don't wait around but quickly disperse by various means, hurrying to wherever they've come from. Canary slinks off into a remote corner, awaiting Sonnai's arrival from her excursion.

But before Sonnai can arrive, there’s a final boom as the side of the castle erupts. Chunks of rock pelt the ground nearby. From out of the smoking hole comes a Nocturne. Canary snorts, shaking her head as the Nocturne’s wing is consumed by a violet flame, crash-landing at her feet.

The scent of burned flesh, molten metal, and the sound of sizzling liquid emanate from the body in front of her. The one good eye locks onto her, rasping, “Please.”

“I warned you, didn’t I?” Canary stalks over to the Nocturne, looming. “You aren’t fit for this dance.” She tuts. “But I’m not that cruel to leave you like this. We’ve got a lot to discuss. Can’t have you croaking on me now.”

Canary drags the Nocturne up to a stand, the poor thing sagging against her scaled hide. He’s far too gone.

There’s a slight hiss as a small figure slides out of the shadows, invisibility sliding of red-ish blue and orange scales.

Sonnai.

“We should go, the whole castle’s looking for this one,” Sonnai says, trying to patch the Nocturne enough to move. Canary nods, hoisting the Nocturne up to walk.

"Please," the smoldering Nocturne says again, leaning away from the castle with urgency. "Need—to go—leave—"

A blur rips into Canary, pinning her to the side of the wall. She sputters, coughing up a small stream of blood. A thin tail lashes as the dragon laughs and laughs.

“Did you really think I’d let you go that easily?” A familiar voice purrs, tightening his grip on Canary’s throat. Her eyes narrow into slits, and her flames roar with anger.

It’s Grazer.

Sonnai growls, grabbing one of the fireworks Canary made and biting into the fuse. Her flames catch the string, “Let her go!” Sonnai roars, taking aim and letting a rocket fly.

The head whips up as the rocket smashes into his side, knocking him back several yards with a thunderous boom.

Canary coughs, clutching her throat as she rolls onto her hunches. Blood drips down her claws, searing pain oozing from the punctures of his long claws.

The rubble explodes from the pile and a figure rises with piercing blue eyes.

Grazer’s clothes, which were once a rather charming suit, are slowly being eaten by blue and purple flames. Blood oozes onto the concrete as he steps down, step by step, his eyes bearing down on Sonnai. His face is missing its flesh, seared into scorched metal lying beneath the surface. Several spots along his body are missing and burnt, torn apart by the blast of the firework.

Grazer snarls, metal glinting from his torn maw, “You’ll pay for that.”

“N-No…” Sonnai whispers.

Grazer smirks as he relishes the shock of Canary and Sonnai as his flesh and clothing begin to fuse together, healing what was once obliterated. “Oh, this? My new Master’s has given me this new body. Isn’t it great?!” Grazer throws back his head and barks a laugh. He cuts himself short, glaring back and forth between Sonnai and Canary. “Now I can deal with that annoying attack of yours, little vermin.”

There’s commotion from the side of the wall where the Nocturne blasted out from. A familiar and unwanted sound. Heavy footsteps, the clinking of armor. Her name.

Grazer lets a sinister, knowing grin spread across his face.

“Sonnai…” Canary whispers under her breath, swallowing, “Get ready to run.”

He lifts his head and his voice, “Forgemaster Gwainthan! It’s the rebels!” Grazer points a long metal claw at them.

"Rebels!" Forgemaster Gwathain roars.

A retinue of warriors, the Forgemaster's personal guard, streams out of the castle behind her. She stops in place, unshouldering an atlatl. Some of her guards take to wing, flying up, preparing to dive.

Tens of heavily armored guards round from all pathways, bearing the Forgemaster’s insignia. Conflicting and confused voices. Chains drag along the ground.

Canary swears under her breath, casting a spell. Sonnai slides underneath her, preparing her arsenal. Canary braces herself for the ranged attack the Forgemaster is preparing and the melee attacks from the ground and air forces.

The Nocturne claws for something, muttering under charred breath. "—enough," the Nocturne gasps, jolting out of the casting. "Listen." The nocturne grabs at Canary’s leg, clings to her face.

“No, stay behind-”

"They need to know—the Rebuke—her vault—" Desperation driving voice.

The Nocturne lifts their head with a wobble, stretching to whisper final words. Then their single eye opens wide, their jaw falling open to hack blood as the head of a spear erupts from their chest, blood splattering against their hides. The tip nearly strikes her from the sheer power behind the throw.

Canary sighs, tasting the blood that coats her lips. Her eyes glare down at the Forgemaster across the battlefield, who is feeling proud of her strike.

She sees the cold, smug face tip his hat as Grazer disappears from view.

But the nocturne doesn't fall just yet. They're holding on, still trying to speak even as the last breath draws near. Canary lowers her head to the Nocturne’s level.

Finally, there’s an order from one of the non-personal guards, likely one of Grazer’s henchmen. Apprehend them.

Some hesitate, giving the nocturne just enough time to dab their foreheads in blood, and whisper the sealing word in prayer: Hearth. A lair's defense.

The rune sears down their bodies, shielding them with a heat fiercer than a furnace's malignance.

The nocturne grips your claws a final time. "Tell them," they croak.

Canary pats the head as it slowly sinks, eye slowly fading, “Worry not, little one, they will know.”

"Rebuke—"

They fall still, slumped and folded over themself. The Forgemaster's spear props them upright, their resting monument.

Several of the non-personal guards rush forward, deeming their commander more important. But the Forgemaster remains vigil, standing her ground with a shaking head.

The Nocturne's mission, though already part of them, is now entrusted to them. Their last words seared into their minds: Tell them. Rebuke!

Canary smirks, rolling back her shoulders. Grazer isn’t the only one with a new toy. And if he thinks he has her, he’s got another thing coming.

Canary arches her head back and roars, “Svet’zihn Eres!” Magic begins to pool and surge as magical circles fall onto the ground.

Several of the guards skid to a halt and bark at their comrades to stop, but their warning is too late.

Her armor roars to life, runes activating at her command, magma rippling to the surface and covering her in a full set of heavy metal armor. Magma churns inside her, rapidly healing her broken bones and other injuries. She hunkers down, encasing Sonnai under the protection of her resistant scales and armor.

The ground erupts with crackling explosions, lava spewing from the fissures with a shrilling howl.

Screams fill the thunder of the lava.

Canary unfurls her wings. Nothing remains of the guards who got too close. A glint of silver whizzes past her head, a bolt lodging into the wall. She hisses as an axe bears down on her head. She sidesteps the axe, sweeping Sonnai away with her tail, and smashes the guard face-first into the ground. Canary drags the dragon into an approaching sword, a trail of blood etched into the stone, cleaving it in half. Canary bites into the neck of the guard who unwittingly cut the other dragon down, unleashing a torrent of flames. The guard falls, dead and burning.

Canary claps her wings together, propelling her backwards into the sky with a toothy grin.

Sonnai unleashes a barrage of crackling and screaming rockets. They lock onto fliers, whistling onto target with a roaring boom. Bursts of colored flame descend from the heavens, splashing and consuming anything that can burn. Ground targets are peppered with the firework weaponry, blazing a warpath of eternal flame.

The Forgemaster stands on with narrow eyes, watching.

Canary grabs Sonnai and tucks in her wings as she dives over the face of the cliff.

Tell them. Rebuke!

Any resistance during the process will be met with swift punishment, so conduct yourselves in a manner befitting guests of the Forgemaster and not," the Veilspun says, cold eyes sweeping the room, "culprits to dubious deeds." Raidah
Sunset City Saboteur
Hosted by DismasYves
Part 1 | 2

Sunset City Saboteur

A rift opens below Raidah’s feet. “No, no, no!” She cries as she falls through, reaching for anything to hold onto. Bright flashing lights flit by her as she falls and falls. Colors swirl and flicker, filling her head with endless neon light. She slams into the side of the outer edges of the Veil, gridlines flickering at her disturbance.

Blood trickles from her nose as she rises, her eyes flickering between a soft red and bright and hungry deep red, as if a light has been switched on. She can hear voices pointing at her.

D-Don’t. A small voice squeaks, trembling. Please...

“You don’t have a choice.” A voice growls back.

“My, my, that was a rough landing,” Raidah nasally mutters to herself, cracking her neck and rolling her shoulders back. She rearranges her broken nose with a sickening crack. “Tell me, good sirs,” the limelight casts an eerie glow on her figure. Raidah throws her head back to stare at her onlookers with piercing eyes, “Where might your boss be?”

Raidah enters the hideout, her head low and submissive. She slinks to the back, where a pair of guards are. She opens her mouth, eyes downcast.

Flick.

Raidah’s posture shifts, her head and eyes lifting as she declares, “The Boss is expecting me.” After a moment, they let her through.

Raidah slides past them, jerking her head to the side as if coming to, curling in on herself as she approaches an imposing figure.

“There you are.” She slides a black envelope across the desk in her direction. “You know the city well, don’t you? Deliver this to the address written on the front. Make sure it gets to the owner; do not hand it off to anybody else. And I’m sure it doesn’t need to be said, but. If you read it… death will be a dream compared to the digital purgatory I’ll put you in. Understood?” Her smile curls sharply, fangs glinting. “Oh, and no need to report back afterward. I’ll know when it’s been delivered. Well? Hop to it.”

“Y-Yes ma’am!” Raidah stammers, her claws shakily taking the envelope, her heart in her throat. There was no need for threats; she’d have nothing to do with the Vespers if she could. Or him. It was him that she was worried about.

She sighs as she exits, lowering herself as she walks. The shadows paint an ugly picture of her in this blinding environment as she takes the shortcut through the garden.

Arriving at the address, Raidah timidly asks for the owner.

“Yes, that’s me.” Her eyes widen when Raidah unwittingly gives her the envelope, before her gaze flickers to cold irritation. “No chance I can convince you to take this back, is there?” Her voice is flat and unamused.

Flick.

“Not a chance.” She growls, eyes tilting with a hard glare. “You know very well what it would mean to reject it.”

With a sigh, she puts the letter in her pocket and waves her hand. “You can tell her I got it.”

Raidah winces, whispering, “I-I’m sorry,” before swiftly trying to get out of the bar. She pushes past a few fellow Vespers, breathily mumbling greetings or apologies for getting in their way.

As Raidah exits the bar, she nearly collides with someone. She tries to straighten herself and apologise—

Flick.

“Watch where you’re going,” Raidah growls flatly, then blinks with recognition.

“Dude! Haven’t seen you in a while. Did you hear about the factory heist?” She lowers her voice and drags Raidah into a more secluded spot. “Check out what I got. Pretty cool, right?”

“I’m not big on parts,” Raidah grumbles as she stares at clinking gears. “I’m more motivated by the hands-on activities,” She motions to the blade hidden on her hip.

“They’re groundcycle parts,” she explains. “All the fancier stuff got taken before I could nab any. Although… I heard the Boss ordered some parts to be set aside for her. Wonder if she’s getting into the Cloudgrazer business? Seems like a great investment, considering—” She gestures to the many Sunset City Cup ads posted plastered in every knook and cranny.

“Anyway, I’ve got another job in tomorrow’s big gig at the Cup. How about you?”

Raidah’s face twitches into a scowl, and Carnivale quickly backtracks. “Ah, I probably shouldn’t say anything then. Don’t worry about it! I’m pretty busy this week, but afterwards let’s grab something to eat together. I’ll definitely be able to treat you after this job.” She winks and grins, then whispers, “You didn’t hear it from me, but maybe watch the Cup from home, yeah? Just in case.” Carnivale pats her on the back.

“Where do you-” Raidah begins to growl threateningly before recoiling and shutting her trap. “N-nothing, never mind. Sorry.” She skitters off, biting her tongue.

“Your strength is waning.”

Hot breath warms her ear, sinking flames of terror down her spine.

“It won’t be long till your body is mine to control, permanently.”

Red eyes loom over her body as it shudders, blood splattering against the pavement as she violently coughs.

P-Please… someone…

She wipes the blood from her face, rising from her spot against the wall. Rain begins to splash against her hot scales, soothing her fever.

Raidah throws a sack over her shoulder, eyes scanning her surroundings. She slips into the cover of darkness. She arrives at the racetrack, cautious as she weaves around security, entering the Veil. Raidah finds a pocket of forgotten digital space and ducks into it, throwing down her sack. It’s time for a stakeout. It’s a long stakeout. Dragons start to line up for general admission, and soon enough, the line snakes halfway around the block. With wide eyes, she tries to peer around, seeing some of the racers arrive and enter the garage. Unfortunately, that area is quite heavily protected both in and out of the Veil; she would have loved to see one of those Cloudgrazers. Enough time passes that Raidah starts to doubt Carnivale is even coming this way at all. Why are we doing this? Why am I here? She’s clearly not coming- "Shut it." But finally, 30 minutes before the race starts, she appears. She saunters right past Raidah's hiding spot and joins the general admission line, handing her probably illegally gained ticket to the attendant. "See? There she is. Now move." But… fine. Raidah shuts herself down, standing to her paws as she continues to track Carnivale. Carnivale walks through the doorway and disappears into the greater Veil. Raidah comes out of hiding, careful not to be spotted, and creeps closer to the doorway. She weaves in and out of the crowd, apologetic as she pushes past them. She goes around, plucking a loose ticket from a distracted dragon as she moves through to the other side. She keeps her ears trained for chatter, good or bad, and overhears the attendant talking about the “sky islands” that constitute general seating. Raidah’s face twitches into a scowl. Ugh… There’s no way to tell which island Carnivale has chosen, and with the race about to start, there’s no time to waste guessing. Raidah wipes the scowl from her face, putting up an excited front as she lines up and hands her ticket to the attendant. If it wasn’t for the blasted entity that haunts her, and the crimes that are happening, she might’ve actually enjoyed herself here. But fun is not a luxury life has dealt her. How much longer can she keep going? When she enters the doorway, a selection screen appears before her. Raidah lifts a claw to the screen and pauses. She’s trembling. Her vision grows hazy, the sky darkening with chilling contrast. Scarlet hues paint across her scales, trailing along her arm. It fills her mouth with vile warmth, suffocating her in its iron splendor. Her claws grip flesh, slaying the pleas that rise from the maw. Raidah doubles over, coughing and covering her mouth in horror. Noise slams into her ears, bringing her back to reality. She blinks, slowly peering up at the concerned staff, blood dribbling from her nose once more. The vision is gone. But the hunger isn’t. She selects ‘Sky Island 1’, desperate to escape her reality. If I just do what he wants… …maybe I can be free from it all… After all, who would want to save a sinner like me? There’s a slight prickling crackling against her scales as Raidah loads in, wiping away any trace of her blood. A pink and orange-streaked sky greets her with a light sea-scented breeze. Taking a glance around, she takes note of the places where the crowd is. There are bleachers with scores of dragons already sitting on them, ecstatic for the race to begin. The whomp whomp whomp of propellers can be heard from below, the mechanism keeping the island afloat. Supposedly, these islands will be invisible to racers to prevent them from being distractions while still being able to provide a good view, kind of like a ‘spectator mode’ of sorts. She begins making her way through the bleachers. Five minutes. That’s all that she’ll give to search the islands. Racers line up below, being introduced by the announcer one by one. This island is a bust. Raidah sighs, slightly tilting her head back and forth to dull the throbbing headache of her sickly body. She manages to search two more islands before the race begins. For a brief moment, Raidah pauses to glance over the railing at the track below. A vibrant digital landscape of hills and trees, and a sky streaked with bright, glowing colors glares back at her. She watches as the 20-second grace period ends and racers start to use their kits: throwing flames, deploying long weapons, and even starting to charge magic spells. It is intriguing to the entity, but Raidah shudders at the horrible thoughts that creep into her mind. She shoves off with a sigh, torn with the desire to watch and the mission at hand. When Raidah enters the fourth sky island, she’s nearly bowled over by a very familiar Undertide. Carnivale looks panicked for a moment before she hisses your name. “Raidah?! What are you doing here?! Quick, we have to get out of here.” She tugs Raidah back through the portal, and they both appear back by the admission line. “Let’s go.” Raidah follows without a word, even as she feels the familiar sensation of blood dripping down her nose. She may have no idea what he’s done, but she can tell Carnivale seems proud of herself. Raidah follows Carnivale as she slips into the Veil, loading them both into one of the secret Vesper tunnels. “These are pretty convenient, huh. I found out just recently that the Boss actually makes these, isn’t that crazy?” “Really now?” Raidah’s eyes glow with ominous curiosity. “Wonder how she got such high-level permissions…” Carnivale shrugs, shrinking back from Raidah’s encroachment into her personal space. “Anyway, we’re heading this way. Let’s go.” Notably, they’re not heading toward the Vesper Headquarters. Instead, Carnivale leads her out of the Veil right in front of a familiar building. It’s Half Heart. The Boss slinks out of the alleyway, looking rather pleased with herself. Raidah watches with recognition as she realizes she’s wearing the outfit of that one racer with the glittery black Cloudgrazer, Faradis. The Boss narrows her eyes at Raidah, who in turn stares coldly at her, then turns to Carnivale. “What. Are they. Doing here.” Before Carnivale can explain, she holds up a claw. “Sh. Never mind. The plan was successful, and that’s all that matters. You—” She points at Carnivale “—keep a low profile, don’t get caught. And you—” she addresses Raidah “—keep your mouth shut, and everyone will go home happy.” Raidah gives a curt nod, not recoiling at her sharp tone. The Boss pauses, pulls out her holopad and reads a message that she was just sent. “Looks like Kardia Co. is hosting a meeting tomorrow to discuss what happened. Looks like you just got a new job,” she tells Raidah. “Plant some false seeds. Make sure they’re on the wrong trail. Do this, and you’ll be rewarded. Fail, and…” She doesn’t need to finish the sentence. Raidah nods quietly, her eyes lit with a hungry glow. She turns to Carnivale. "Keep out of sight, or I'll kill you myself." Her eyes narrow as she growls her warning and threat. "Or... you can be my perfect little bait..." Then she stalks into the shadows to carry out her orders. Raidah awakens the next day to the sound of her holopad pinging. It’s the meeting the Boss was talking about. Security is pretty tight. Raidah pulls out a throwaway set of clothing, dressing herself in a generic outfit. She steps out of her lodging, slipping through the Veil to shake any watchful eyes before finding the first victim to steal their identity. The dragon enters a quiet alleyway, humming as she stares down at her holopad. Making sure the coast is clear, Raidah closes in. She can feel him in the dredges of her mind. He wants to kill. Raidah shakes her head, trying to shake him. She stumbles into the dragon, a cough battering her. “What the- watch it!” The dragon hisses with ire. Raidah grabs the dragon by the throat, eyes locking onto hers. “What-” Raidah squeezes her throat, choking her. The dragon squirms beneath her claws. “Please don’t…” The words fumble out of Raidah’s mouth. A snarl erupts from her throat and digs her claws deeper into the suffocating dragon. DON’T! Raidah flinches and releases the dragon to sputter for breath, backing up several feet. She feels as much fear as the dragon she just thrashed. “You fool. You can’t allow her to leave now that she’s seen you.” Please… you can have more of me… just don’t… don’t kill her… Laughter echoes in her mind, “Oh my little vessel, I already have you, it’s just a waiting game. And I have all the time in the world.” Raidah’s eyes flicker. She dashes forward towards the recovering dragon. “But… I’ll throw you a bone and accept your offer.” Raidah clasps the dragon’s snout shut and drags her into the Veil, kicking, muffled screaming, and scratching at her. It’s easy enough to just go in as a regular civilian. Outside of the Kardia Co. headquarters, reporters and drones are swarming to the scene. One stops Raidah, shoving a mic underneath her nose, and asks a question. “Miss, over here! Were you on the island when it went down? Can you give us some details?” Raidah looks sheepish, rubbing the back of her head. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t on the island when it crashed.” The reports look dejected, and before she can even say anything else, they find their next victim to interrogate. The meeting room itself is within the HQ building, inside a room with a high domed ceiling and artificial sunlight streaming in from skylights. The stage is slightly raised and has enough seating to hold at least a hundred dragons, if not more. The security is a lot tighter this time around: all dragons must leave their belongings at a bag check and be patted down before entering. Racers and other special guests seem to be seated in a different area than the general crowd, but Raidah is told there will be a time for mixed discussion after the main briefing. “That would be a good time to spread some lies.” Raidah wills her body not to show any pleasure in this. The entity would not relent if she were snuffed out here. When she arrived, the place was mostly empty, but after around half an hour, the seats are filled with anxious and curious dragons. A tired-looking Coatl comes onstage and looks around. “Thank you for your time. I am Virus, vice-president of Kardia Co. Welcome to our headquarters.” He sighs. “Yesterday's incident was an unprecedented disaster, the likes of which ideally will never happen again. I would like to disclose to you what we do know, and open the room up to discussion to see if we can gather any more clues as a group.” He clicks a remote and a holoscreen opens with a picture of a brightly colored Undertide. Raidah’s face scrunches slightly with irritation, calculation, and a twinge of panic. “This is our current suspect. Seen exiting the engine room, Carnivale is her name. She has a criminal record tied to the Vespers, although most of her past crimes have been rather small in comparison, such as shoplifting.” “Our theory is that Carnivale somehow gained access to administrative permissions and used them to disable the engines on Sky Island 4, causing the island to fall. The motive and whether she was working with someone else or not is currently unclear. Although… it may be related to the fact that as of yesterday, Faradis and her crew remain missing.” Someone asks where the Creator is, and Virus winces. “The Creator is personally overseeing security improvements to the Veil today and was unable to make it.” Grumbling fills the crowd. “In any case. You are all released for discussion. Security is in place, so please keep all talks calm and on-topic.” Raidah looks around, putting on a frightened front, making a mental note of who is here, their reactions, and dispositions. Surprisingly, Virg0 is not here, though his pit crew is. Raidah slips into several discussions, sowing seeds of doubt. She is careful not to deviate far from her story. After hearing all the evidence, especially regarding Faradis' appearance under the helmet, the last wisp of his sanity disappears into the void. "Right... I should have known it had something to do with her." He gathers everyone who contributed valuable information and asks them to come with him into a different, soundproof room. He locks it and turns to face everyone. "What I'm about to tell you... well, I'm not supposed to talk about it. But I cannot in good conscience hold my tongue if there are dragons in danger. I didn't realize she was still involved... Please, let me tell you a story. I ask of you not to spread this information more than it needs to, but I can't force you to do anything. I just hope you won't judge me too harshly for what I am about to tell you." “You see, Kardia used to have two co-founders.” “Ahhh, I see. Now it makes sense.” “The Creator was the face of the company, but she didn’t work alone. The Veil was a project created by both her and her girlfriend at the time; however, her girlfriend did not wish for the attention that came with fame, and chose to remain in the shadows. So when they had a big falling out, no one except the employees at the time knew that her girlfriend— the dragon named Lovelace— was completely cut off from the company entirely.” “I was… fairly new at the time, and the company itself was only a handful of years old. Apparently, rumor had it their argument was about some big project they had worked on and finished together; they couldn’t agree on how it was meant to be used. Afterward, the Creator started to withdraw from company affairs, assigning larger tasks to the dragons in charge and, later, to me. We were told not to discuss the breakup with anyone. But everyone who remembers what happened surely was shocked when the Vespers started gaining power in the city… all under Lovelace’s management.” Virus closes his eyes, feeling the weight of everyone’s eyes on him. “We tried combating them. I thought we’d succeeded; all of our reports indicated that Vesper activity in the Veil was low, if not non-existent. And when I brought the few instances up to the Creator, she told me that she’d deal with it herself. But to find out Lovelace still has her admin status… she must have changed the files. Which explains exactly how that Undertide, Carnivale, was able to disable the engines. She must have upgraded her permissions temporarily.” He pinches the bridge of his nose. “Alright. So what are our next steps? I think there are a couple of pressing matters. We should probably find the Creator and figure out what side she is on. Based on what has been shared here, she might be compromised. There’s also a matter of figuring out where Faradis and her crew were taken. Finally, it’s risky, but we could also try to find Lovelace by tracking the Cloudgrazer she was using. There’s… a way we can do that, but it will require some… persuasion. Of course, if you do not want to get involved, you may do so as well. This is our mess to deal with, not anyone else’s.” He glances around the group with exhausted eyes. It hurts her as she holds up her paws timidly, claiming not to want to get involved. She can’t tell these good people here what's going on and the evil that's in her head. Raidah sidles out of the room, then slips back into the Vesper tunnels, intending to hightail it back to the base to report to the Boss. As the Veil envelops her, spots of digital blood appear on the floor. Intriguing… Raidah treads cautiously, as the trail of blood continues in the same direction she’s going. Approaching the hideout, she’s met with a bunch of high-level Vespers, all loitering in the tunnels surrounding it. They look her up and down, verifying that she’s supposed to be there before nodding and letting her through. “The Boss is in the server room,” one tells her. “She asked not to be disturbed, but you’ve got clearance.” For some reason, they don’t add, but she can see it on their face. Raidah enters the hideout. It’s dark and abandoned, the absence of any sound putting her on edge. The blood continues here on the digital floor, drips getting more and more frequent until she finally sees what is causing it. Lying pixelated on the floor, half-in and half-out of the Veil, is Virg0. Raidah’s nose curls with disgusted pleasure. The Boss and the Creator— Radia, Raidah remembers someone mentioning— are engaged in an intense conversation, with the latter tied up in the real world against a pillar. She seems extremely upset about Virg0’s condition. The Boss grins and traces a single sharp claw along Virg0’s cheek. Pixel blood drips to the floor from the cut. “So what’ll it be? You’ll do anything to save this precious creation of yours, won’t you?” Radia glares. “He’s your creation too.” The Boss rolls her eyes dismissively. “And that’s all. A creation. When will you get that through your skull? He is a tool to be used. You let yourself grow attached to something that isn’t real. Look to the future, dear. We could be on the same side again. We could take care of a real dragon. You don’t need this.” She gestures to Virg0. “All you need to do is give me—” She suddenly sees Raidah lurking in the shadows and cuts herself off. “Well, well. Did you do your job properly? I’ve heard the news, all talking about Kardia Co.’s imminent downfall. I suppose a reward is due… perhaps you’d like a promotion to the inner circle? Or maybe a monetary bonus?” She holds up a claw. “Well, I’m getting ahead of myself. I do have one more thing for you to do before I grant your wish.” She steps away for a brief moment to rummage through a duffel bag sitting against the wall. Radia looks heartbroken where she’s bound. “You don’t know what she’ll do,” she whispers to Raidah. “You care about your rank in the Vespers? There won’t even be a city anymore. Please, I know I’m not a perfect dragon, but if you have any doubts in your mind, now is your chance to save yourself. To save everyone.” Raidah gives Radia an apologetic look, clearly at her wits' end. “I’m sorry,” she whispers, her voice almost nonexistent as a tear rolls down her cheek. “I… can’t…” Raidah breaks out into a fit of coughs, slumping against the pole, sounding far worse than she has ever sounded. A wet gurgle hangs in her breathing. Death is knocking. “You think I care about rank?” Raidah throws her head back and laughs and laughs. “Dear me, I think you’ve mistaken me for someone who has a heart. No, no, no,” She clicks her tongue, leaning in close to Radia. Radia’s nose crinkles as she smells an eerie sickness on Raidah’s breath. “This vessel no longer has a heart.” “Alright.” Lovelace returns with a holo-pad and what looks like a genuine stun gun. “The Creator and I are going on a little, hm, vacation. Isn’t that right, dear?” Radia grimaces and glances at Virg0, who seems barely conscious, then gives a small nod. “That means we need someone to cover our backs as we leave this place. You will join your friend Carnivale in the tunnels, ready to protect us when the time comes. Do this, and your position in the Vespers will be secure.” Raidah grins wickedly and gives Lovelace a nod. She gnashes her teeth with anticipation as she turns and phases into the gash in the wall behind them. “Your friend Carnivale is somewhere around here. Stay here and keep an eye out for anyone pursuing us. Stop them from going any further, fight like your life depends on it if you have to. When I return, you will be granted a wish of your choosing.” Raidah nods. A wish… The only thing she wishes for is the ecstasy of the hunt. To paint a beautiful hue of red, drowning the city in the warm sticky liquid. To sit on a crown of bones, to see his face collapse as she destroys everything he’s created. save me… “It’s my turn to play god.” please… Raidah steps into the shadows, placing herself under the cover of rafters, her eyes fixed on the entrance, ears trained behind her. She hears the familiar slithering, tilting her head in his direction to acknowledge his approach. “Well, well! Now who’s getting all the big jobs, huh?” Carnivale grins toothily up at her. “Knew you had what it took. Glad we can work together now. How about, when those goody-goodies show up, I’ll take the left side and you take the right? Or do you want the left side instead?” “I’ll take the right.” Is all she gives, her eyes glowing with a dark hunger. Zorn growls as Carnivale pops out onto the path, readying himself for a fight. “Hold up! You’re not getting any farther!” With a flash of her scales, a wave of glimmering shadow magic is sent in his direction. Raidah uses Carnivale's boldness to her advantage, angling herself above a familiar, flashy Aberration. She lunges for one of his necks, jaws stretched for the kill, but Zorn moves just in time for her teeth to graze past, taking a chunk of his skin. Blood splatters against the digital plane. Not digital blood, but the real liquid life. Zorn is taken aback, the pain almost not registering until Raidah’s claws sink into his back as she grapples him. She can sense it: the change in this plane of existence. Zorn roars, pain erupting in his back as claws grip him and teeth snap at his hide. She can taste the iron, the utter thrill coursing through her as she tears into Zorn. Zorn throws himself into the wall, drawing a hiss from Raidah. He bites into her neck with both heads and, with all of his strength, throws her off of him. Raidah crashes into the wall with a demented laugh, blood dripping from her claws, her mouth stained with his blood. She bounces back scarily fast, eyes wild. “You,” Zorn snarls, his eyes in narrow slits in utter rage. “Oh, I’m sorry, are you upset that you were deceived by poor little me?” Raidah sneers, stance ready to lunge. Then, out of the blue, from behind Zorn, a beam of bright blue light shoots out and sears a hole in Carnivale’s wing. Carnivale reels from the blow. Raidah’s eyes narrow with a snort as she locks onto a bigger and more fun threat. Virg0 and Virus. Raidah snarls, her mouth wide with fangs. She rushes them, zipping between their bolts. She slaps Virg0 away with her tail, sending him flying into the wall. “Virg0!” Virus roars as Virg0 slumps down the wall with a groan. Raidah blocks another bolt unleashed by Virus as he hastily begins to fire off everything he’s got at her. She ducks and weaves, slashing through his magic piece by piece. She looms over him as he pants and pants. Raidah bites down on his head and Virus is forced to respawn. “Now then,” Raidah turns to the struggling Wildclaw. “What happens to you… if you perish here… hm?” Virg0 spits out digital blood, glaring as Raidah approaches. Raidah chuckles. “I just love that look.” She lifts her paw, her claws gleaming with a mix of digital and real blood. Raidah pauses, seeing a flicker out of the corner of her eye. Something is wrong. “Hmm, it looks like luck is on your side this time.” Raidah turns to Carnivale, who is sauntering over with digital blood staining across her features. “We’re leaving.” Raidah unfurls her wings and leaps into flight, speeding down the corridors as the Veil begins to shatter. Raidah slips through the portal of the Vesper HQ with Carnivale on her heels, licking her lips, savoring the iron taste. When she exits, she’s taken aback. “This isn’t HQ…” She and two other individuals, one familiar, the other unknown, have been spit out in the same area. A warm, dusty cave. Scattered about are faded paintings of clans that have come and gone, tattered remains of fabric, bones of long-dead creatures, dragon and all. Zorn's eyes are glossed over, his expression pained and at a loss. His brow furrows as bitter tears splash against his scales. Zorn stares at his bloodstained claws with disgust. Raidah continues to look around, and when she looks at the only exit, her heart drops. “No!” Raidah screeches, ears pinned to the back of her skull. Her back arches as she sinks low, skittering into the corner. All three cast their gaze upon the lion—he who sits with tender authority. Azalea’s eyes well up with tears, and she begins to cry. Qengji approaches her with a gentle smile, resting a paw on her head. “Be at peace, little one.” “NO, NO, NO!” The entity screams in Raidah’s head. “Anyone but him!” “Qengji…!” Azalea hiccups. He takes back his paw as he sits in front of her. “It’s been a while since I last saw you, Azalea. You’ve grown and done mighty well.” Her smile is bright at his praise, despite the overflow of tears and snot. “I cannot thank you enough for all you’ve done for me, Qengji.” “It is nothing I have done, but the Father who lives through me,” Qengji dips his head. He turns to Zorn, ignoring the trembling Raidah. “Zorn,” Qengji speaks softly, but it sucks the breath away from Zorn as his eyes widen at his name. “The things of the realms are like the flowers in the field. They spring to life in the morning, and by night they wither away. But truly I say to you, the humble will be everlasting, sheltered from the sweltering sun that scorches midday. If you want to see a change, follow me and love with your life.” please… “NO! I will not allow you to!” Just this once… A trembling claw reaches out towards Qengji. Zorn and Azalea’s eyes widen in alarm. “Please…” A small voice croaks, spitting up blood. “Save me…” “NO!” The voice changes with a sharp roar. “You cannot…! I was supposed…! I will not allow-” “Enough.” The single word from the lion's maw is enough to silence them all. “Demon, your time in her is done.” Raidah’s body shudders, buckling to the floor with a thud and scattering of dust. Smoke dissipates from her scales. “Little one, your faith has made you well. Rise and be hindered no more.” Raidah stands to her paws, and her jaw goes slack with surprise. “M-My body…!” She pats herself, twirling around. “I’m me!” She shouts with a laugh. “A-And it doesn’t hurt!” Raidah zips around the room, bouncing from one wall to another with exhilarating laughter. “If Qengji’s cool with her, then we’re okay.” Azalea beams at Zorn. “That’s just who he is.” “I…” Zorn swallows, shuffling his paws. “I want to follow him.” “Then you’re in good company.” Azalea trills, patting his paws. “A long time ago, I made the same decision. I’ve never regretted it.” She chuckles, looking on. “Though my world has been turned upside down quite a few times.” Zorn tilts his head. Azalea jumps up with a hum. “You’ll get used to it. I look forward to growing with you, Zorn!” She bounces over to Qengji. Raidah comes to a stop, out of breath beside Qengj. I’m finally free! “Thank you.” She breathes. He nods with a smile. “A-And you…” She turns to Zorn. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry for all of the damage I’ve caused you. I couldn’t control him… he…” Raidah bites her tongue and shakes her head. Zorn leans back slightly, not expecting anything from her, “No sweat…” Raidah sighs, her posture relaxing immensely. She turns to Qengji, curious as to what comes next. [/hidden]

Sunset City Saboteur

It’s before the dawn of the start of the Cup.

She’s clearly not coming-

"Shut it."

But finally, 30 minutes before the race starts, she appears. She saunters right past Raidah's hiding spot and joins the general admission line, handing her probably illegally gained ticket to the attendant.

"See? There she is. Now move."

But… fine.

If I just do what he wants…

…maybe I can be free from it all…

After all, who would want to save a sinner like me?

I found out just recently that the Boss actually makes these, isn’t that crazy?”

“Really now?” Raidah’s eyes glow with ominous curiosity.

“Wonder how she got such high-level permissions…” Carnivale shrugs, shrinking back from Raidah’s encroachment into her personal space. “Anyway, we’re heading this way. Let’s go.”

Notably, they’re not heading toward the Vesper Headquarters.

And you—” she addresses Raidah “—keep your mouth shut, and everyone will go home happy.”

Raidah gives a curt nod, not recoiling at her sharp tone.

"Or... you can be my perfect little bait..."

Then she stalks into the shadows to carry out her orders.

“You fool. You can’t allow her to leave now that she’s seen you.”

Please… you can have more of me… just don’t… don’t kill her…

Laughter echoes in her mind, “Oh my little vessel, I already have you, it’s just a waiting game. And I have all the time in the world.”

Raidah’s eyes flicker. She dashes forward towards the recovering dragon.

“But… I’ll throw you a bone and accept your offer.”

Raidah clasps the dragon’s snout shut and drags her into the Veil, kicking, muffled screaming, and scratching at her.

It’s easy enough to just go in as a regular civilian. Outside of the Kardia Co. headquarters, reporters and drones are swarming to the scene. One stops Raidah, shoving a mic underneath her nose, and asks a question.

“Miss, over here! Were you on the island when it went down? Can you give us some details?”

Raidah looks sheepish, rubbing the back of her head.

“That would be a good time to spread some lies.”

Raidah wills her body not to show any pleasure in this.

I would like to disclose to you what we do know, and open the room up to discussion to see if we can gather any more clues as a group.”

He clicks a remote and a holoscreen opens with a picture of a brightly colored Undertide. Raidah’s face scrunches slightly with irritation, calculation, and a twinge of panic. “This is our current suspect. Seen exiting the engine room, Carnivale is her name. She has a criminal record tied to the Vespers, although most of her past crimes have been rather small in comparison, such as shoplifting.”

“Our theory is that Carnivale somehow gained access to administrative permissions and used them to disable the engines on Sky Island 4, causing the island to fall. The motive and whether she was working with someone else or not is currently unclear. Although… it may be related to the fact that as of yesterday, Faradis and her crew remain missing.”

Someone asks where the Creator is, and Virus winces. “The Creator is personally overseeing security improvements to the Veil today and was unable to make it.” Grumbling fills the crowd. “In any case. You are all released for discussion. Security is in place, so please keep all talks calm and on-topic.”

Raidah looks around, putting on a frightened front, making a mental note of who is here, their reactions, and dispositions.

I just hope you won't judge me too harshly for what I am about to tell you."

“You see, Kardia used to have two co-founders.”

“Ahhh, I see. Now it makes sense.”

“The Creator was the face of the company, but she didn’t work alone. The Veil was a project created by both her and her girlfriend at the time; however, her girlfriend did not wish for the attention that came with fame, and chose to remain in the shadows. So when they had a big falling out, no one except the employees at the time knew that her girlfriend— the dragon named Lovelace— was completely cut off from the company entirely.”

“I was… fairly new at the time, and the company itself was only a handful of years old. But everyone who remembers what happened surely was shocked when the Vespers started gaining power in the city… all under Lovelace’s management.”

Virus closes his eyes, feeling the weight of everyone’s eyes on him. She must have upgraded her permissions temporarily.”

He pinches the bridge of his nose. This is our mess to deal with, not anyone else’s.”

He glances around the group with exhausted eyes.

You’ll do anything to save this precious creation of yours, won’t you?”

Radia glares. “He’s your creation too.”

The Boss rolls her eyes dismissively. “And that’s all. A creation. When will you get that through your skull? He is a tool to be used. You let yourself grow attached to something that isn’t real. Look to the future, dear. We could be on the same side again. We could take care of a real dragon. You don’t need this.” She gestures to Virg0. “All you need to do is give me—”

She suddenly sees Raidah lurking in the shadows and cuts herself off.

To save everyone.”

Raidah gives Radia an apologetic look, clearly at her wits' end.

“This vessel no longer has a heart.”

“Alright.” Lovelace returns with a holo-pad and what looks like a genuine stun gun. Do this, and your position in the Vespers will be secure.”

Raidah grins wickedly and gives Lovelace a nod. She gnashes her teeth with anticipation as she turns and phases into the gash in the wall behind them.

“Your friend Carnivale is somewhere around here. Stay here and keep an eye out for anyone pursuing us. Stop them from going any further, fight like your life depends on it if you have to. When I return, you will be granted a wish of your choosing.”

Raidah nods. A wish… The only thing she wishes for is the ecstasy of the hunt. To paint a beautiful hue of red, drowning the city in the warm sticky liquid. To sit on a crown of bones, to see his face collapse as she destroys everything he’s created.
save me…

“It’s my turn to play god.”

please…

Raidah steps into the shadows, placing herself under the cover of rafters, her eyes fixed on the entrance, ears trained behind her.

Or do you want the left side instead?”

I’ll take the right.” Is all she gives, her eyes glowing with a dark hunger.

You,” Zorn snarls, his eyes in narrow slits in utter rage.

Oh, I’m sorry, are you upset that you were deceived by poor little me?” Raidah sneers, stance ready to lunge.

“Be at peace, little one.”

“NO, NO, NO!” The entity screams in Raidah’s head. “Anyone but him!”

“Qengji…!” Azalea hiccups.

He takes back his paw as he sits in front of her. “It’s been a while since I last saw you, Azalea. You’ve grown and done mighty well.”

Her smile is bright at his praise, despite the overflow of tears and snot.

“I cannot thank you enough for all you’ve done for me, Qengji.”

“It is nothing I have done, but the Father who lives through me,” Qengji dips his head. If you want to see a change, follow me and love with your life.”
please…

“NO! I will not allow you to!”

Just this once…
A trembling claw reaches out towards Qengji. Zorn and Azalea’s eyes widen in alarm. “Please…” A small voice croaks, spitting up blood. “Save me…”

“NO!” The voice changes with a sharp roar. “You cannot…! I was supposed…! I will not allow-”

“Enough.” The single word from the lion's maw is enough to silence them all. “Demon, your time in her is done.” Raidah’s body shudders, buckling to the floor with a thud and scattering of dust. Smoke dissipates from her scales. “Little one, your faith has made you well. Rise and be hindered no more.”

Raidah stands to her paws, and her jaw goes slack with surprise.

“That’s just who he is.”

“I…” Zorn swallows, shuffling his paws. “I want to follow him.”

“Then you’re in good company.” Azalea trills, patting his paws.

Zorn leans back slightly, not expecting anything from her, “No sweat…”

Raidah sighs, her posture relaxing immensely. She turns to Qengji, curious as to what comes next.

*Note: I was only able to do a beginning and an ending properly for this event; the middle is still in progress, so I'm only going to be giving the beginning portion and adding everything else later.*

Sunset City Saboteur
Another early day. Azalea hops out of bed, humming as she readies herself for the day. With a spring in her step, she boards the train, the crowds not bothering her in the slightest.

The Skydancer next to her strikes up a conversation. “You going to the Cup tomorrow? Who are you rooting for? I’m a big fan of PCH myself; blasphemous, I know. Everyone else I know is supporting Virg0.”

Azalea turns to the passenger and tilts her head. “Oh yes! I’m very excited!” Azalea chirps. “I root for the underdog, but I also root for the title holder.” She gives a cheesy grin. “Everyone works so hard for these things; it feels wrong not to cheer them on, ya know?” Her tail swishes with giddiness. “I can’t wait to see it!”

Virus is already there, along with most of her coworkers.

“Good morning, everyone.”

“Good morning, boss!” Azalea chirps, her smile brightening the whole room with boundless energy. You have to wonder how she has this much energy.

“You’ll be working in the same groups you’ve been in over this past week. Please follow your assigned supervisor to the designated location. We are very nearly done with everything, so we just need to put some final touches on the foundation we’ve already created.” He sighs, clearly exhausted. “The Creator has asked for the start and finish line to have a little more ‘energy’ to it. So please keep that in mind if you are working in that area.”

“You got it, boss!” Azalea salutes.

She boards the awaiting bus with the rest of her coworkers and peters on to the racetrack. Azalea flips on her goggles and heads into the Veil.

“Please take a look around the venue, and if you have something you think would make things better— as long as it’s non-obtrusive— go ahead and add it. Just make sure to log the change so I can double-check everything when we’re done today.”

“Roger that!”

Azalea spreads out her claws, humming as the code bends around her claw tips.

“Quite impressive. Most people aren’t able to conjure something dynamic like this this quickly. You’ve got a knack for fiddling with the Veil.” She flicks a claw and what Azalea conjured suddenly gains a little more energy.

“Aw shucks!” Azalea scratches the back of her head with a grin. “It ain’t nothin’ special, I just had a great supervisor to show me the ropes, ya know?”

“Fantastic work. Let’s see if there’s anything else we can finish.”

“Righty-o!”

We’re heading up, you coming with?” She tosses Zorn her vending machine haul, and he catches the Rainbow Mints with one paw. “Of course, ready when you are,” Zorn purrs, winking at her as he pops a yellow mint into one of his mouths. Pix turns her nose to the air and sniffs. “Smells like rain. We should probably drop all this off and head to the practice course if we want to get a feel for the Veil before tomorrow.” “Sounds like a plan.” Zorn pushes past her, straightening his leather jacket. His lips curl into a grin, “Hey, after I win, why don’t we grab a bite, just the two of us?” Seeing her brow furrow, he backs off, leaving her with a final word, “I will win.” Heeding Pix’s advice, Zorn grabs his race bag when they arrive at the hotel, leaving with the others for the practice course.
