PROLOGUE
Wind playfully danced through the open fields. The waves of jade-green grass waved, rippling through the Windsinger's hands.
Vex lumbered along the wide plains with the slowness of age. The day was young, and so far as he was concerned, there was - for once - no hurry to reach his destination. His mercenary jobs took him all over the realm, and it was merely good fortune that his moment of respite had taken him to his homeland.
The last time he had been home, he had not been alone. That thought was enough to sour his mood.
He stumbled his way towards the nearest reedbed, hoping to hunt himself a midday snack. The lilyfowl in the waters quickly scattered, leaving him to dip his head and drink a few gulps of fresh water. Licking his lips, he spread his wings to take off for the nearest cliffside, then paused.
Hidden between the stones was a small harpy-nest, long since abandoned, judging by the markings along the edges. Inside, however, small voices whispered, only hidden by their pitch and the rush of water flowing nearby.
"Shhhh!" One of them hushed, loudly. "He'll see us!"
"But I'm thirsty-" another grumbled.
"Hey, what's that?"
He blinked. Looking up at him from the entrance of the cave, staring straight at the necklace around his throat, was a tiny fathom. She was blinking at him with the dark pink eyes of the Arcane, a classically adorable child with the large eyes and floppy ears of her kind.
Another crawled right up her back to look out. Another set of wide eyes, this time a Spiral.
"Woooah!" He grinned, all teeth. "You're huge!"
"Guys!" And, finally, the cautious one spilled out of the harpy nest, half-tumbling over a muddy pearl as he lugged it behind him. "Stop! You don't know if that's safe!"
"Where are your parents?" Vex mused, cutting the ramble off at the quick. The three tiny children blinked at him.
"Don't have any," The Spiral answered, shrugging his way off his sister's back. "What's it to you, mister?"
Well then.
It wasn't often that it happened, but it happened. Dragon Eggs were sometimes abandoned, for one reason or another; the parent fell in battle, or a clan was attacked and the nests left to fend for themselves, or worse, an egg could sometimes end up stolen by beasts. It was known that eggs could stay in stasis almost indefinitely, if not cared for... and it was also generally agreed that eggs should be picked up and kept safe, when they were found unattended. Some clans would go out of their way to adopt abandoned eggs instead of having their own.
This, however, was a different scenario - a situation he hadn't ever anticipated. That the eggs would hatch without a parent nearby was basically unheard of. He could only assume that the harpies had made a mistake.
Still... it seemed appropriate, at the very least, to consider them as 'eggs'. Abandoned eggs, that needed caring for.
He felt a faint tingle beneath his heartscale, right where he'd felt that tug when he finally met his charge. It had been a long while since he'd felt that pull without pain. These children weren't his charge, but...
"Did you say you were thirsty?" He asked. The Spiral nodded, unaware of the Pearlcatcher's frantic expression. "Go on, then. I'll see what I can hunt for us." He paused. "And get some plants. And insects." He stepped aside to let the children move for the water's edge, and with the impatient spiral leading the charge, the three finally moved to sate their thirst.
How had three hatchlings, all of different species and with different diets, come together like this? He wasn't sure, but he'd have to remember that this wasn't any ordinary clutch. He was lucky Guardians weren't so picky.
With a sigh, he took to the sky, the reeds rustling with each beat of his wings. He had more than just himself to hunt for, now.
