Lanternwolf The Lanternwolf, or Foyvol in The Old Tongue, is an eyeless, large sized, purely nocturnal predator that resembles a skinny canine with a long body and tail. Both ends of the Lanternwolf are decorated with bright green, gem-like growths that emit a steady, bright light. This species can be found anywhere on the northern hemisphere and is closely related to the Valravn, closely enough to produce fertile offspring. Habitat This creature, while widely found in the northern hemisphere, can indeed rarely be found in more southern places as well, as long as caves and cliffs are present. Their nests are usually made inside deep cave systems and are often shared with several other Lanternwolves. The nests are made from clay and moss and have fairly high walls compared to nests of other, similar species, since their pups require a warm and damp environment to grow without health issues. These creatures require a habitat that includes caves or cliffs that protect them from the sun during the day as well as allow them to navigate the terrain without getting lost, since they rely on their whiskers and hearing to get around due to their lack of eyes. Unlike other blind creatures that would prefer open spaces to allow them to hunt, Lanternwolves have evolved to feel the vibrations of sound reflecting off of rocky surfaces, allowing them to easily and quickly navigate caves, not unlike bats. Diet The Lanternwolf hunts its prey by luring it to it by lightly swaying from side to side, effectively hypnotizing the unfortunate critter with its 'lanterns' on its head and at the end of its tail. Their usual prey consists of mice, rats, snakes, birds and rabbits. Occasionally a Lanternwolf may be fortunate enough to lure a deer or boar to it. In rare cases it has been observed that one of these creatures has killed and eaten a weakened Valravn or Basilisk, though no actual evidence of this has been presented. Though the Lanternwolf is mainly carnivorous, they have also been known to feed on mushrooms or berries if they have been particularly unlucky with hunting live prey. Behavior Unlike what urban legends and folklore have led people to believe, these creatures are completely harmless to humans. There has not been a single death reported that has been caused by a Lanternwolf and injuries have been rare, usually caused by humans wandering into their territory and frightening one. They are calm creatures that usually navigate their territory slowly and are known to run only when threatened or playing. Lanternwolves have also been known to be very curious and have wandered into human settlements time and time again, leading to them having to be captured and released back into a cave nearby. Lanternwolf packs have no clear hierarchy. The strongest members take care of the weaker ones, but none have authority over another. It seems as though these creatures simply live in a cave with each other without forming a true pack, instead living peacefully together in a mutually beneficial relationship. The largest recorded colony or pack is situated in the north of Alaska and houses around seventy individuals, not counting pups. Lone Lanternwolves are rare, as they usually quickly find a cave to settle in, with a pre-existing pack. The only time one would see a Lanternwolf that has no pack for a prolonged period of time would be if the lone individual was sick. Lanternwolves usually stay in one territory their entire lives, rarely ever does one leave to join another pack, though it has been observed before, especially if a cave has too many individuals that come from a single bloodline. To limit inbreeding the pups are either left to die when they are young or are sent away once they reach adulthood. Pups with genetic defects are also sent away or abandoned most of the time, as they will not reach adulthood and would threaten the safety of the pack. Should a parent not allow their pup to be sent away or abandoned they have been observed to leave with their pup to find another pack that is more accepting or a cave to start a new pack of their own. There is one Lanternwolf that has been observed to wander from pack to pack without staying in one cave for long, which is very uncharacteristic of this creature. The Wanderer, as this adult male has been dubbed by many people that have been fascinated with his peculiar behavior, was born in a small cave in the south of China and has, in the past seven years, made his way to northern Greece and has yet to settle down with a pack. Etymology The Lanternwolf got its name from the lantern-like growths on its head and at the end of its tail, which it uses to lure in its prey. Its name in The Old Tongue stems from the words "Foy" for enemy, relating to its status as a nocturnal beast, and "Vol" for wolf, due to its canine appearance. History and Mythology The first time the Lanternwolf was ever mentioned was in a diary entry written by an unknown Swedish author in approximately 47BC. This unknown author had stumbled into a large cave system and had struggled to find his way back out. After several hours of him stumbling around the cave blindly, he saw a green light and started following it. The light continued to guide him safely out of the cave and once he stepped outside the cave, the moon illuminated his savior. In his diary he had described the Lanternwolf as a "creature of unnatural appearance. Its head sported no eyes and had, instead, a large green crystal from which an eerie green light emanated. Its teeth visibly extruded from its ginormous maw. The whole creature resembled a starved wolf with pitch black, slick fur." In other stories and accounts Lanternwolves have been described as bloodthirsty and dangerous, known for luring people away from safety and into traps to devour them alive. All of which is not true and has been disproven many times. It is speculated that people were simply using the Lanternwolf's strange and scary appearance to scare children and make them stay away from forests and caves. In many other stories the Lanternwolf has been described as a guardian spirit, said to guide lost souls back to safety, like the unknown Swedish author described in his diary. Due to the differences in opinions on Lanternwolves, they had been hunted to extinction in many countries that held the belief that they were an omen of death or a dangerous predator. In recent days, due to the global law protecting the Lanternwolf from hunters they have made an astonishing comeback and have once again settled in most countries of the northern hemisphere. Description The Lanternwolf is a fairly large creature, with a length of up to five meters in most cases. There have been a handful of Lanternwolves that measured up to seven meters from nose to tail tip. Their height from paws to shoulder usually doesn't exceed 150cm, but one especially large specimen has been measured to be 170cm tall. Most of their length comes from their tail, which makes up more than half of their total length. There is no gender specific difference for Lanternwolves, as they have no gender. Like snails, every Lanternwolf possesses both reproductive organs and can reproduce with any other Lanternwolf. The Lanternwolf is known for its 'lanterns', which are bioluminescent growths at the tip of its tail, on its forehead and at the ends of the four antennae that grow from its forehead. From a distance the growths resemble gems, but when looked at closely, they are squishy organs that grow underneath thin layers of skin that hold them in place, but still allow the light to glow through. If the skin on these organs is damaged, the organ will flatten slightly to allow the skin to heal before swelling again once the wound has healed completely. This happens because the skin is constantly stretched tight over these organs and it would not heal properly unless the organ became smaller during the healing process. Lanternwolves are long and skinny to allow them to easily navigate tight caves, but still have a significant amount of muscle, especially in their jaws and tail. They hunt by moving their tail to bait the prey close, which may take hours and calls for a large range of motion, therefore they have more muscles in their tail than in the rest of their body. Their jaws are strong enough to bite through most types of rocks to allow them to create holes in cave walls for their nests. Their paws make no noise as they walk due to the lack of claws and the fur that grows between their toes, similar to the paws of a cat. Their fur is short and slick. It is so dense that water simply pearls off, though it always looks slightly wet and shiny. From a distance it may seem as though they have no fur at all on most of their body. The fur around their necks is more rough and significantly longer than on the rest of their bodies. They can fluff this fur up to keep warm, similar to the feathers of a bird. There are fourteen known varieties in fur color and pattern in Lanternwolves. The most common pattern is Shaded, which comes in five different colors; Red, Sand, Olive, White and Brown More uncommon are Lanternwolves with fur that is purely one color, either Brown, White, Gold or Black Striped fur is rarely found, but exists in three colors; Silver/Blue, Brown and Orange The rarest patterns are Appaloosa, Calico and Spotted Lanternwolves Genetic defects In some very rare cases Lanternwolves may be born with genetic defects. The two known Lanternwolf exclusive birth defects are tied to fur colors. Starry and Cloudy Starry Lanternwolves are usually stillborn, though there has been one that has reached adulthood and was extensively studied by scientists in the course of its life. It was dubbed 'The Star' by the scientists and has allowed them to assess the extent of the 'Starry birth defect', which causes the Lanternwolf to have difficulty with fine motor skills, making it seem clumsy and causing it to fall over or stumble more often. The Star has managed to overcome this difficulty though and has been able to integrate this obstacle into its hunting technique. Cloudy Lanternwolves are always born deaf and therefore have a severy disadvantage in life, being both blind and deaf. There have been several that have reached adulthood despite the added challenge, simply relying purely on their whiskers and sense of smell.

The Lanternwolf is known for its 'lanterns', which are bioluminescent growths at the tip of its tail, on its forehead and at the ends of the four antennae that grow from its forehead. Valravn The Valravn is a large sized, mostly immortal, winged canine beast and is closely related to the Lanternwolf, closely enough to produce fertile offspring. They are largely seen as the most intelligent monsters and have been known to possess humanlike minds. Due to this and their ability to shape-shift, they often blend into human society and live among us stealthily. Habitat Valravne are found anywhere on the globe, though their behavior and appearance may vary between individuals living in different countries. They are usually found in human cities, living common lives as though they were human as well. Valravne that choose to remain in their natural form are usually found in large forests or mountain ranges, staying far away from humanity. In the wild their dens are usually made by weaving twigs and vines together to create a small ball protected by bramble bushes or similar thorned vines. Valravne have been known for their adaptability and can be found in nearly any climate. Their behavior varies slightly, especially when it comes to the way they build their nests. Ones living in tropical forests may tend to build their nests higher up in trees to protect their pups from predators, while ones living in icy tundras may burrow deep into the earth to preserve their body heat. The only habitat these creatures are rarely found are deserts, as the ecosystem lacks materials which can be used for nest building. Diet Valravne are, similar to humans, omnivores and require a diverse diet to stay healthy. Individuals living within human societies have easy access to a diet that fits their species, though they do tend to require a larger percentage of meat in their diet than humans would. In the wild Valravne will often dig up roots and mushrooms to feed on in addition to eating berries they find and prey they hunt. Their prey depends on the habitat they live in, though they will hunt any animal smaller than them. It has also been observed that individuals living in tropical forests have adapted to need less meat and live mainly off of fruits, these Valravne have evolved to be significantly smaller than any other group of Valravn. Behavior Folklore often depicts Valravne as evil creatures set on devouring the hearts or the blood of infants. This has been disproven many times and many scientists and behavioral analysts believe Valravne possess a human amount of empathy and morality. This is further proven by the fact that they seem to be able to blend in with humans seamlessly, even though many Valravne living in human societies, especially in recent years due to the growing acceptance, have decided to keep their ears, tail and wings visible even in human form. Crimes committed by Valravne only made up 2.7% of all crimes committed world-wide in the past ten years. Whether Valravne live in human societies or in the wild, they still abide by a sort of hierarchy. The stronger a Valravn's magic is, the more other individuals will respect them. The strength of an individual's ability radiates from them, which can only be seen by other Valravne or some other species. Many times human made hierarchies, in jobs for example, have conflicted with the natural hierarchy that Valravne have evolved to abide to. These conflicts are usually resolved quickly, either by going their separate ways or by learning to live with a 'weaker' Valravn being in a higher position. In rare cases bloodshed may be the outcome of this conflict. These instances make up around 60% of all Valravn related crimes. Valravne living in the wild have a simpler hierarchy. The stronger ones magic, the higher ones social standing within a group. While they tend to be loners or as a small group of two, Valravne do tend to have a large social circle that is made up of all individuals living nearby. Fights between Valravne with similar magical strength are common and fatal most of the time. These fights are instigated by one of lower social ranking, unsatisfied with the hierarchy, who challenges the Valravn ranked above them. While Valravne in the wild mostly stick to the place they were born in, many have been known to wander in search of another territory. Ones living in human society seem to be enjoying traveling more than the average human. Unlike most other beasts, Valravne have holidays and rituals. Even individuals living far away from humanity have been observed partaking in many if these. The most prominent one would be the Summer Solstice Festival. During this festival the main part are the duels. Valravne from all over the world will gather in one place that changes every year to celebrate the shortest night of the year. In the duels magic is strictly prohibited and they are meant to measure the physical strength, dexterity and tactical intelligence of the participants. The winner of the duels will get a prize that is decided by the strongest Valravn of the country that is hosting the festival that year. Foods are also a big part of the festival, especially Star Roots, which are known for their stimulating and narcotic properties. Etymology The name Valravn comes from the Old Tongue words 'Val' or 'Vol' for wolf and 'Ravn' for raven, since the first specimens observed were a group of black feathered Valravne in the north of Denmark. History and Mythology Mentions of the Valravn date back to early cave paintings in which a large wolf like creature with wings had been depicted with flames surrounding it. A notable early mention of Valravne were from a small tribe in the north west of Denmark that had worshipped a 'Valravn with wings as black as the night with shimmering stars embedded in them and fur as white as snow', according to translated runes. In many other early mentions these creatures have been painted in a mostly positive light, known for their humanlike wits and their tendency to live among humans and help them where they could. It is also believed that the Valravn had been the reason humanity had discovered fire, though there is no actual evidence to back this claim. In more recent years, as Christianity became more popular, Valravne, as well as most other beasts, have been painted in a more negative light, as people have spread rumors about them. The most common one being that Valravne would only be helpful and nice to someone to trick them into giving up their newborn so the Valravn would be able to devour the hearts of these children. Other stories painted them as omens of death, stating that a person who crossed paths with a Valravn was destined to die within the next week. This era of misinformation has fueled a widespread hatred towards Valravne that is still ingrained in many peoples minds, making it difficult for Valravne to be accepted in human society, especially in Christian countries. Due to the Christian church spreading so much hate and fear of them, Valravne are wary around anyone openly Christian, especially priests and nuns. In the early 10th century, eight hundred years after the Christian church had started spreading these lies, a priest stepped forward and released a statement in which he spoke about how wrong the information spread by the church was and his experience with his Valravn lover. In his time 'Seven', which is what he went by and how he signed his pamphlets, was condemned by the church and most of society, but in recent years, from 1950 onwards, these pamphlets have become popular and public opinion has shifted to be more accepting of Valravne in human society. Human-Valravn relationships were legalized in all countries in the world in the years between 1799 and 2017, with the Netherlands being the first and France being the last. Denmark, as well as most non-Christian countries had never prohibited relationships between humans and Valravne in the first place. Description The Valravn is a fairly large canine creature with a length of about five meters on average from nose to tail tip. They are usually one and a half meters tall from paws to shoulder and their wingspan averages at about three meters. The largest recorded Valravn was found in Latvia and had reached a length of seven and a half meters, a shoulder height of two meters and ten centimeters and a wingspan of five meters. The Valravne in tropical forests are smaller than other individuals and are three meters long, have a shoulder height of one meter and a wingspan of three and a half meters on average. Valravne are almost entirely immortal. The only way to kill them is by using magic, or by being a Valravn. They do not age past 30 and will start aging very slowly once they reach 20, only reaching '30' after several hundred years. Male Valravne tend to have longer tails than females, though that is the only difference between males and females. Valravne do have different colors when they are pups than when they are fully grown. Pups tend to have grey feathers and a duller version of their fur color until they reach maturity, at which point they lose their pup feathers and fur. Valravne are known for their magic abilities. Their flames depend on their eye color, which are not genetic. Valravne can have any eye color, regardless of the eyecolors of their parents. If an individual has orange eyes, their flames will be orange as well. Similarly, if one has blue eyes, their flames will be blue as well. In rare cases a Valravn may have heterochromia, which will cause the flames to show two colors instead of one. Valravne are long and slim, though not quite skinny. They posses a large amount of muscle, which allows them to run fast and jump high, which is necessary to gain enough speed and height to take off and start flying. They have a long tail which sports a fluffy tuft at the end of it. On their foreheads they have a spot with longer fur, similar to a tuft of hair. Their wings are similar to those of a falcon and allow them to reach high speeds when flying. The feathers of their wings always matches the tuft on their tails and the fluff on their foreheads. Valravne are able to shapeshift between their natural form and a human form. They can choose to keep some attributes, like their paws, wings, tail or ears, while in human form. The spot of longer fur on their foreheads rarely matches the hair color they have in human form. Contrary to popular belief, Valravne have no control over how exactly they look in human form, they are simply able to shift between two forms freely. The only thing that stays the same between the two forms in all cases are their eyes. Valravne can come in a large variety of colors and patterns. Their fur and wing color are completely unconnected and they can come in any combination. Their fur color is usually tied to their habitat and their heritage, but they can occasionally exhibit different patterns and colors regardless of what would be expected. In colder climates, especially in forested areas, Valravne tend to have striped pelts. These can come in a large variety of colors that may have different vibrancies and brightness levels. The stripes themselves may also vary and are often asymmetrical. The spots may be on a white or colored base coat and can vary wildly in size, some seeming more like a Dalmatian and others showing only small bits of the base color. Rare color mutations include merle colorations, shaded gold, appaloosa, and any fur patterns including three or more different colors. The wings of a Valravn are not dependent on their habitat in most cases. They are likely random in most cases, as scientists have not yet found any relation between wing colors of pups and the wing colors of the parents. The most common wing colorations are simple, unicolored wings of any color. More uncommon are wings with two colors. In tropical forests Valravne have evolved wings similar to those of parrots that have a full rainbow gradient. Healthy offspring has been observed many times from Human-Valravn couples, no matter if the mother is the Valravn or the Human. Though these children are healthy, they seem to almost always lack some of the attributes of a Valravn. Some may be born without the ability to use magic, or without wings. From what scientists have gathered so far, Valravne are the only creature that can crossbreed with humans and produce healthy, fertile offspring, despite not sharing any common ancestors. This seems to be because of the creature's ability to shapeshift, though there is no evidence to prove this theory.
Valravn

The Valravn is a large sized, mostly immortal, winged canine beast and is closely related to the Lanternwolf, closely enough to produce fertile offspring. They are largely seen as the most intelligent monsters and have been known to possess humanlike minds. Due to this and their ability to shape-shift, they often blend into human society and live among us stealthily.

Habitat

Valravne are found anywhere on the globe, though their behavior and appearance may vary between individuals living in different countries.

Diet

Valravne are, similar to humans, omnivores and require a diverse diet to stay healthy.

Behavior

Folklore often depicts Valravne as evil creatures set on devouring the hearts or the blood of infants.

Etymology

The name Valravn comes from the Old Tongue words 'Val' or 'Vol' for wolf and 'Ravn' for raven, since the first specimens observed were a group of black feathered Valravne in the north of Denmark.

History and Mythology

Mentions of the Valravn date back to early cave paintings in which a large wolf like creature with wings had been depicted with flames surrounding it.
