you stand in a dimly-lit library without the faintest memory of how you arrived. you look upon the creature before you and find that only the word "angel" comes to mind. it seems fitting that a being from the heavens should be here lying in wait. even before it tilts its head, before it indicates the set of tomes set out upon the table between you and them, you know you have nothing to fear. you reach for the first tome and open it to survey the words neatly scrawled upon the pages. the creature watches. you know, distantly, as if intrinsically, that it is the holy scribe - the chronicler of all that came, is coming, and will yet come to pass.

[size=4]deep within the tangled wood is a realm carved out from all the rest. it has no clear physical boundaries, nor can any other denizen of the shadows tell you for sure how they know to avoid this land. [i]"everyone just... knows,"[/i] is the only answer you are likeliest to get, if you dare to ask... along with a look of skepticism and fright. [i]"no one ever goes into their territory and comes back out alive."[/i]
who are "they?"
monsters, my dear.
deep within the twisted thorns and creeping vines, a clan of monsters dwells. the five who rule these hellish things are subservient only to lucifer himself, and they rule the tangled wood with vicious teeth and claws. some are great and hulking things, with murder on their minds; others are on a more average scale, their wiles far more sinister in tone. some are fully corporeal, while others drift between this realm and the next at will.
the creatures who live beneath their rule are just as varied, and just as wretched. omens of death, heralds of misfortune, singers whose songs lure travelers to the grave... all manner of foul things creep within the shadows. those foolish enough to wander past their unspoken borders will meet their fates with remarkable haste.
rumor has it, however, that not all who wander too far are forever lost. it has been observed that the count of monsters only ever seems to grow... and in close accordance with the count of normal folk, dropping day by day. it's an old wives' tale, surely, but, well...
some say that those who are lured into the monsters' realm are not slain, but [i]changed.[/i]
some say that they recognize their dead lover's eyes in the trees some nights, peering out from the edges of the tangled wood. others say they've heard their lost child's laughter echoing in the night, choked and gurgling, but recognizable all the same.
it would be foolish to venture into the beasts' home... yet some, in search of love or friends or families lost, will try.[/size]
