[columns]"Hope and Katherine, what beautiful names, just like mucus to my ears!" The little clouded mith smiled graciously at the two entrants as she reviewed their forms. "I'm Mistress Mith, and I always find festivals so exiting, don't you? All the hustle and bustle and muscle...oops!" She hid behind her hand with a little giggle as Cedar passed by shouldering a heavy trunk of prizes.
"Well, everything looks fantastic, fabulous, and flabbergasted. Don't forget to pick up your Poet Certificate as you go! It won't do for Uncle Opa to see it like that. He's our professional patroller of perforation and punctuation, you know!"[/columns]

"Hmm-hmmm. Looks like we have our very first entry, Cedar!" Uncle Opa's eyes rarely, if ever, left his clipboard.
"Oh, sweet! Always a good omen. Let's keep those entries keep coming early and often!" When there was no reply, Cedar looked up from their work untangling trinkets in a hatbox. "Was there anything else, Uncle?"[/columns]
The ancient mith seemed surprisingly at a loss for words. He gazed about at the boxes and trunks of prizes, nervously tapping his clipboard.
[columns]Cedar's antennae twitched as a light went off in their head. "Uncle, why don't I gather a few items for a Surprise Prize? It takes a certain kind of bravery to be first, even if it's just a poetry contest. In fact, I saw something just now..." Cedar began to rummage.
"Hmm, ah yes! Splendid Idea! Glad you thought of it!" Uncle Opa looked relieved to be so well understood. "You must be busy. I'll leave you to it, shall I? Hmm-hmmm. Yes."[nextcol][/columns]

Dimitra hurried up to the miths, a small smile on her nervous face. Perhaps poetry was not her strongest point, but when Dancer had told her about the lucky charms category... Well, it had seemed so perfect!
Anyway, she was here now. What harm could it do to try? Taking a breath of confidence, she held up her poem.

Dimitra's lanterns lead the way,
Ethereal providers of light.
Steps along a sunbaked ledge,
Cool in the dark of night.
The journey is winding and dangerous,
Fraught,
With such an ominous looming,
Thought.
That if she falls-
And then she slips!
A desperate cry,
Upon soft lips.
Yet bathed in gentle candlight,
A foothold hidden by the night!
Steady steps she takes from now,
Till the dawn thus ends the fright.
The journey is over,
She's safe now and sound.
Her lanterns have saved her,
And Dimitra is proud.

@Sinjin , I have a question: does the poem have to be written during the duration of the competition? I'm considering entering an older poem of mine, or a translation of another older poem of mine.

He finally looked up. "There appears to be no restriction as long as the poem falls into the theme of the applicable category. So by all means, dust off your missive and let's have it then!"
"That said," here he peered over the top of his pince nez, "if the poem was previously entered here in a previous Jamboree, well now, that would just be bad form. The Windsinger doesn't care for re-runs."[/columns]
