Blacktongue Pepper Heiyang Pepper: The black sun pepper. It carries with it a distinctive sweet, fruity aroma and armed with a robust smokey aftertaste that heavily defines it... that is, if one can endure past the heat long enough to savour its flavour. It is one of Autumnal's most notoriously spicy peppers, second to none. Its bite is quick and strong. It burns with a long fuse that seemingly cannot be quelled by any quantity of water nor tea, no matter how generous.
Aether Cherries Yingqiao Pepper: A beautiful... cherry? No, that's not right. Though it looks remarkably similar in colour, shape and size... there is something of an ominous sheen to it, one available only to a discerning culinary eye. Its existence is the source of much care before one bites into a cherry around these parts. It is named "Ying" after its cherry appearance and sweet flavour, but also "qiao" for bridge... as in one that bridges the gap between life and death in its merciless heat following shortly behind the deceptive, lingering sweetness.
Bittercrisp Apples Mijiu Apples: Honey liquor apples, often mistaken for the more bitter variety seen in the lands abroad. Its dark colour seems off putting at first, but when held under a clear lamplight, it is revealed that its murky colour is actually more of a sanguine sheen that goes dull in the presence of the sun. It's a favoured ingredient for making beverages of the intoxicating sort. Surprisingly, it tastes less like apple and crosses more into the territory of something in between that and lemons.
Always-Autumn Always-Autumn: A lovely staple and integral part of any of the clear Autumnal teas. It is used as a base for many a blend and noted for its delicate earthy notes once brewed. It can be found wild all year round if one beats the competition. Cultivated varieties are common, but the wild ones are the ones whose flavours are boasted and treated as a foraged prize. A popular past time is for couples or families to go out on walks together, picking them along the way and brewing a cup to share once home.
Alstroemeria Alstroemeria: These flowers are a common sight throughout Autumnal cuisine, though primarily as a garnish. Whether arranged whole or simply its petals, it is flexible in form fresh or dry. It is most often introduced as an added touch of colour and fragrance, making everything look a little more lively and inviting. The variety that grows here is especially sturdy, holding its colour and form well against the heat of freshly cooked food.
Blood Spath Lianjin: Beloved for its colour and flavour, this flower is a popular main ingredient in not only Autumnal side dishes, but also snacks! Usually it is served chilled with other more delicate, sweet and slightly acidic profiles similar to pickled vegetables. It's meant to be served with something similar to beef or venison and eaten in between. Though it can also be deep fried into crunchy snacks for later, or candied and dried for a nice chewy treat. Its name comes from its value in its wonderful versatility and availability rather than for its actual colour, despite having "gold" featured in its name.
