currents

In the workplace, the Currents are just like any other infrastructure. Roads, telephone poles, water pipes, they don't think of the Currents to be anything more than just that. It's merely a way of delivering generated electricity to various parts of the Shifting Expanse so that production and research can continue as normal. Of course, there is always more to something than what meets to eye, and the Currents is no exception.

There is a subset of employees that work to maintain the Currents, but it is only basic maintenance to ensure that there are no power cuts and no illegal siphoning occurring. There are many levels down there, and those employees only explore the first 2 levels. There are no official maps of these lower levels, and most of the lifts and stairs to them are blocked off. This is because they've stopped being in use many decades ago, but this doesn't prevent dragons and creatures from making their way down there and doing whatever they please in the maze.

From the 3rd level onwards, it is a lot harder to find sources of light and food and water from random break rooms, monitor rooms, and bunkers and the like from the first 2 floors. These levels are known as the Under Currents. All power from above has been cut off, the only ones being from generators that are still functioning despite being disconnected, and of which can stop at any moment. Finding food is like finding an oasis in the desert, whereas with water it's only a matter of cleaning it of oil and grime. There are also sections where the pathway has collapsed, making it unsafe or impossible to pass through.

Dragons that come down here are ones that are desperate for a place where they won't be followed into. They are dangerous, hungry, and willing to do whatever it takes to stay alive. They are known as scavengers, and they often work either alone or in small groups. They could be considered alike to the Plague mentality, where survival is the most important factor of life. Scavengers don't leave these levels, as they have to somehow navigate their way all the way back up to the top, a nigh-impossible task for ones too used to the darkness and tight tunnels of the Under Currents. There have been determined explorers that have attempted to learn what lay in the depths, but they have all either been lost to its mysteries, or returned with cracked minds from months without sunlight nor socialisation.

According to rumours, the lowest level of the Currents is the 5th floor. What lays all the way at the bottom? Nobody knows, they merely spread rumours about what could lay down there: the Stormcatcher's secret research, highly advanced weapons to be used for dominance, perhaps a small civilisation cut off from the outside. However, most dragons agree that whatever it is, it must be important if it was so hard to reach. Past employees that used to work down in those depths are unheard of, and those that are known refuse to discuss it.

In time, all secrets are revealed, it is just a matter of who will live to tell the tale.
