This story follows from the point of view of one lonesome female pearlcatcher, fluent in the legends of Lightweaver and the Beacon Tower, as she observes the various weak and weary travelers arriving on her eastern shores.

Kore spends her days caring for her home, a once-abandoned lighthouse inn. It was a place she had found in ruins, but now runs smoothly thanks to five consistent years of her loving care. (If only it had inhabitants.) Too shy and withdrawn to find a clan to call her own, our lonely Kore busies herself by constantly updating her impressively large but empty home at the base of the lighthouse. Her life is a series of chores, schedules, and lonely nights...

That is until he washed up...

The morning after a violent storm, Kore finds an unconscious dark male wounded in the waves. Unable to leave him for death, Kore finds the courage to bring the blue beast into her home as the rebuilt inn's first resident. Our story begins with their meeting.

Will our leading lady let her hermit's heart open up for a washed up guardian who's overpowering charm might just send her into a spiral of anxiety and appreciation? His arrival may be the very thing Kore and her Inn needs.

By the time she was an adult and of age to have responsibilities and a mate, Kore decided to leave her birth clan and make a home for herself. ??? An empty lighthouse by the sea...
A place of refuge, could it be?

Kore was born and raised near the eastern cliffs. She grew up with the common knowledge and whispered legends of The Beacon of the Radiant Eye. She had visited it a few times, seeing the crumbled but welcoming tower for herself, since it resided on the eastern seaboard near her home. Legends said that from this cliff, the Lightweaver watched and waited for any dragon that may be making a trip across the sea. This made Kore think, what exactly did Lightweaver do for those who washed up on the shores below the cliffs? The pearlcatcher hadn't seen the bright diety at the tower at any point in her life, and Kore certainly hadn't seen Lightweaver help those weak and weary travelers who sailed their boats and ships to the east coast, many of those who never had a place to rest on the land. Kore thought about this for a few years, keeping to herself and steadily rebuilding a small lighthouse near The Beacon. Over the course of five years, she had made the little abandoned inn attached to the lighthouse her home, (though it had far too many rooms for her to fill with anything). She was a hermit of sorts and had no clan or family to call her own, let alone fill her empty house.

One day that would change when one lone guardian washes up unconscious on the shores below her lighthouse.

Lighthouse Inn's first refugee

??? Just loving life and going with the flow...

Trenton is fascinated with the salty sea, the real wild ocean that surrounds the dragon's eleven lands. He spends his days sailing and fishing off the coast of Lightweaver's land, but he always makes sure to be back home on land before dark.

If you can't find him on the water or somewhere on the beach, he is most certainly in the kitchen.

Trenton never cared for the landlocked ocean abandoned by the Tidelord. He was the son of Oceania, the leader of The Great Coral Reef Clan residing in the middle of the Sea of A Thousand Currents. His birth clan was enormous, you couldn't get a corner of a current to yourself before someone was asking what you were doing, and when you're the son of the leader, everyone was asking you what you were doing or innocently comparing you to your older brothers and sisters. That's why Trenton spent most of his time with his father, Pipeline. The two would spend their time surfing and cleaning the swelling waves. Though the hobby and the job weren't relaxing to Trenton... His father could out surf him any day and Trenton would much rather sail than surf the ocean blue. Then there was the endless garbage. Sure, they cleaned what they could for the hoard, but they were a landlocked ocean. They were surrounded by other dragons and lands just dumping their trash into their ocean home. She allowed herself to sleep in that morning, as opposed to rising with the sun. Today she tried to enjoy laying in her cream-colored blankets until nearly noon, even if she had been awake since dawn. Her body was a live wire, her soft short fur ruffling with waves of anticipation. It skittered across her skin like fresh static. There was a deep seeded excitement that shook her to the core, but she tried to contain it. The dragon clamped her wings to her back, clenching her eyes shut and trying to ease her energy. She'd lay here and enjoy her lazy morning! She would not let her wildly beating heart burst from her chest. She would stay calm and composed. She was a mature adult. She would not burst from her bed, do a little dance, and squeal at the idea that her mail would be delivered today. (She had promptly done that yesterday and the let down had been unbearable). But not today! The piebald pearlcatcher did her best to calmly get out of bed, smooth out her sheets and fold her blankets delicately. She wore no apparel other than her pearl purse which she tossed over her shoulder as she left her modest room. When she closed her bedroom door behind her, the pearlcatcher glanced down the hallway to her right. There were doors that lead to eight other rooms on this floor, and the third floor above had ten rooms! When Kore had found the abandoned building attached to the broken lighthouse, she assumed it was some rich dragon’s mansion. She claimed the property as her own after living there for a few months without incident. Kore spent her time slowly familiarizing herself with the structure and eventually came to the conclusion that it was once an inn. The last five years had been hard as she slowly rebuilt the old and broken building. It kept her mind, hands, and body busy, exercised, and it gave her purpose. She learned how to use tools and blueprints. She’d spend the day rebuilding and spend her nights reading or writing. Her book sales gave her the funds she needed to return the old inn back to its former glory. Now it was like new, with most of the rotten wood having been replaced with the trees she cut down herself from the forest outside. Most of the internal furniture had to be replaced, which she did room by room over the years. The inn was now complete, with rooms filled with desks, beds, dressers. She had replaced walls, doors, floors, and decorated the entire building with white and gold decor. There was nothing she had left to fix, replace, or decorate and now she was left with what she was trying to distract herself from… loneliness. Kore shook off the thought and instead nearly ran down the stairs, making sure her grip on the smooth railing would keep her from falling, (like she did yesterday). The steps and floor had been completely replaced, so it didn’t make a peep as she skipped to the kitchen to make her usual morning tea. Or would it be lunch tea now? She giggled as she opened the curtains and revealed the perfect sunny weather outside. It was always beautiful here. Her view was a large open clearing framed with golden trees and ending with a cliff drop that lead to the rolling sea below. When Kore opened the window, she could hear the distant roar of the waves as it rode on the spring breeze. The warm air tickled her whiskers and she couldn’t help but smile. The weather was great, her morning was great, and hopefully, her afternoon would be too! Art by @/SleepyTroll With a small fire started in the hearth, Kore hung a teapot over the open flames and waited for the water to boil. She got out a jar of jam and began slicing up the bread she had baked yesterday to pass the time. The pearlcatcher took the trey of sliced bread, jar of jam, a box of tea bags, and two mugs across the kitchen and out the back door to the porch. Using her tail, she held open the screen door until it latched and stayed open. Just as she placed the trey on the little side table between two chairs, the teapot began to whistle. The hot water screamed as Kore ran back inside and pulled the pot from the flames. Hot, hot, hot, do not drop… she thought to herself and carefully walked the scalding pot from the kitchen to the porch table. Once settled, she felt the wind pick up and whirl around her, tossing her mane and pulling her whiskers. “Hello Kore!” A spiral swirled down from the sky, her soft green scales lined with tangerine. She had several bags strapped to her, many revealing papers and letters under the flaps. “Kinkajou! Please tell me you got it!” Kore couldn’t contain her excitement. “Oh, I got it.” Kinkajou folded her gold wings and smiled deviously. “I got it and then some! Because you deserve it,” she reached into one of the bags and pulled out a brown package and yellow envelope. “It wasn’t as expensive as I thought it’d be… about seventy thousand treasure, so the envelope has the rest of your treasure I didn’t spend at auction inside.” The spiral glanced to her old friend and a laugh rolled out of her. “You look like a hatchling about to get their favorite treat, look at you.” She teased while holding the package out of Kore’s reach. “Oh you, gimme that!” The pearlcatcher jumped and caught the package as Kinkajou dropped it. “It’s heavier than I thought it’d be…” she mused as she flipped the package over. “Oh, help yourself to some breakfast, er… lunch?” she corrected herself. “I can’t stay long,” the spiral said softly and her smile didn’t reach her eyes. “But I can stay long enough to see you try on your new outfit. Go on, I’ll have a cup of tea while you get dressed!” Kinkajou waited until the excited pearlcatcher nearly launched herself back inside to get dressed before the spiral’s smile fell. Her cheeks hurt with the effort to keep smiling for her friend. She poured herself a cup of hot water, dropping a tea bag into it to steep. She waited, wondering how she was going to break the news to Kore. She took a slow sip, wincing at the heat. “Oh my Lightweaver,” Kore said as she came out of the kitchen. “It’s entirely too fancy,” she held her cheeks and gave the spiral a shocked look. “I can’t wear this, you’re going to have to resell it…” she exclaimed. The pearlcatcher was draped in luminous sundrapes, a golden silk veil, and matching leg silks. Out from behind her, her golden bantam fangar familiar walked lazily outside. And I’m not taking back those silks either, those are my gift to you.” She promptly sipped the tea. “But Kinkajou,” Kore frowned. “I have nowhere to wear this, and no reason too. I shouldn’t have splurged on something I couldn’t use.” The pearlcatcher frowned as her little lion curled around her legs and batted at the flowing silk. “Well, maybe you should wear it to the next festival,” Kinkajou suggested. “Everyone gets all dolled up for those events, and you haven’t gotten out of this inn since you got here. It’s about time you get out, enjoy yourself, and make some friends.” The spiral scolded. “Why would I need friends when I have you?” Kore laughed but it didn’t last. Her smile fell when she saw the serious look on the spiral. “What’s wrong?” She asked gently. Kinkajou inhaled deeply and sighed. “I’m moving Kore,” she looked down at the mug of tea in her claws. It was a really good tea, sweet and smooth. She’d miss it, as she would miss Kore. “I’m going to live in Gladekeepers lands…” she heard Kore inhale to interrupt, but the spiral didn’t let her and let out her news with an exhaled whoosh. “There’s a wildclaw there, Glen… he’s set up this amazing flower field and he has this growing business and clan where they make medicines for dragons all across the eleven flights and he needs me to send those medicines for him. I’ve already accepted and your delivery was my last… and I did it as a favor to you as a friend. I left my job delivering mail two days ago… but I wanted to wait for your auction before I said goodbye.” There was a long moment of silence as the news sunk in around them. “Is that why you bought me the silks… because you felt bad about moving?” Kore asked innocently and the responding sigh from Kinkajou was as good as any confirmation. “It’s okay,” the pearlcatcher said lowly as she dropped into her chair. Her fangar, named Sunny, hopped into her lap and she began petting the small lion. “It’s not okay that you’re here, all by yourself, with no family, no friends, and no clan.” Kore winced at the words, but they weren’t wrong. “You could end up falling one of these days, hitting your head, and you’d be left for dead rotting here with no one to know the wiser…” Kinkajou scolded and Kore kept her gaze down, nodding gently in agreement. “And our friendship was born out of necessity. You needed your mail and deliveries. It sucks to hear and I don’t regret our friendship but I need you to promise me you’ll do something, with someone, sometime soon.” The spiral put down her empty mug. “Even if it’s just being friends with the next mail delivering dragon they assign to your address.” The spiral leaned over to her friend and gave her a hard hug. Sunny, his space invaded, growled and hopped out from between the two embracing females. With a flick of his tail, he prowled off the porch and headed back inside. “I expect a letter at least once a month so I know you’re alive,” the spiral commanded and the pearlcatcher gave a broken laugh, nodding against her friend's chest. The warm air around them suddenly dropped in temperature and the scent of rain curled in from the sea. There was a rumble above them and Kinkajou sighed deeply. “Promise me that you’ll wear this beautiful outfit out somewhere? And that you’ll make some friends?” The spiral asked as the sky began to darken. “I promise,” Kore heard herself say, but she didn’t truly believe it. Thunder rumbled louder above them, this time bringing with it fluffy grey clouds that looked heavy. “You better head out before the storm gets bad…” Kore gave Kinkajou one last hug. “Thank you for the silks, and the confidence. I’ll write to you as soon as you send me your address,” she promised. “You better,” Kinkajou smiled. “I need to read your next book before everyone else does,” she winked and Kore laughed with a wave of her claw. “I’m serious. You should go public and stop writing under that fake name. Maybe set up a meet and greet. It couldn’t hurt to meet your fans. They did make you rich,” the spiral reminded her and Kore gave a weak smile. “Hatchling steps,” Kinkajou noted before taking a few steps back and raising her wings. “You look amazing,” she reminded Kore before taking off and swirling up into the sky. Kore tried not to let herself cry. She needed this push. She had finished the inn, and her latest book. She had nothing to do, nothing to distract herself, and now her only friend was gone. It was about time she stop telling herself she was too busy to be social or to go out. The sky lit up with streaks of white in the distance. The pearlcatcher took in the trey of untouched bread, jam, and the two mugs. She wasn't hungry anymore... her stomach twisted. With her tail, she lifted the teapot and headed inside. Thunder roared above the inn and gentle drops of early rain tapped all around. Kore placed her lunch on the counter, glancing outside to see an ocean storm rolling inland. The sky above the ocean was black and angry, heading right for the coast. Sunny jumped into the window, his fur ruffling violently as the first real storm winds blew through the screen. Kore quickly shut the window, sealing peace inside the inn. She knew what to do next. Across the kitchen, the pearlcatcher opened a side door that lead to the base of the lighthouse. The room was bare except for a spiraling staircase that Kore began to climb. Sunny followed, his eyes full and aimed at her swaying silks as they ascended the staircase. It wasn’t her responsibility, really. There was no law or rule that said if you owned a lighthouse that you had to make sure it was running, or that you had to turn it on. But Kore was bred, born, and raised in light flight. She knew the stories of the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, a crumbled but welcoming tower that not only resides on the eastern seaboard, but it was a good three miles from her house. From this cliff they shared, the stories said that Lightweaver watches and waits for any dragon that may be making a trip across the sea. What exactly did Lightweaver do for those who washed up on the shores below the cliffs? The pearlcatcher hadn't seen the bright diety at the tower at any point in her life, and Kore certainly hadn't seen Lightweaver help those weak and weary travelers who sailed their boats and ships to the east coast, many of those who never had a place to rest on the land. In the five years she lived here, she had seen maybe a ship sailing by a few times. But because they were out there, Kore felt a sense of need to fix the broken lighthouse. If she was lost at sea, the real wild salty sea ungoverned by the Tidelord, she would want help. And so when she reached the top of the lighthouse, she flipped the large switch with both claws and a little force, and illuminated the black sky with beams of light. Word count ~ 2,531

xxxxxCalm before the Storm...

Kore tried to be patient.

With a small fire started in the hearth, Kore hung a teapot over the open flames and waited for the water to boil.

“I got it and then some! xxxxxThe Lighthouse Inns first refugee...

She should just sell the inn. Just sell the lighthouse and move on.

Kore sighed deeply, tucked into bed watching the black storm outside her window. There had been a gentle rain all afternoon that had grown into an average storm throughout the night. Now, in the wee hours of the morning, in those dark moments before dawn, the wind shook the shingles. Rain pounded at the inn roof relentlessly.
