The then nameless Haloke hated the mindlessness of the hunt and dreamed for something meaningful, some purpose more fulfilling than the stomach. The answer only came after abandoning her birth pack. The lone Mirror was suddenly exposed, unable to hunt in solitude, journeying deeper and deeper into the fledgling Wasteland. Weeks of fasting devoted her wholly to the Plaguebringer, who whispered in her mind often, guiding her to meager food sources and teaching her to bask in the gaseous pits of the land. Over time, the Mirror's natural poison hide brightened and her bite became more toxic, maw dripping with sizzling acid and nostrils snorting clouds of noxious gas. Where a pack took down a single weakened prey over hours, Haloke was able to decimate an entire herd in mere seconds. Slowly, she was groomed, learning Mother's ways. History

Memories do not extend to the time of the Great Birth. There was simply nothing but vast wasteland and the stench of carrion, dry-picked carcasses and low-crouching, feral Mirrors. The only thing that mattered was the hunt, something to silence the never-ending hunger rumbling within. The then nameless Haloke hated the mindlessness of the hunt and dreamed for something meaningful, some purpose more fulfilling than the stomach. The answer only came after abandoning her birth pack. Baptized in the Wyrmwound, Haloke emerged with powers that had increased tenfold. To its core, the Plague Flight believes in strength above all, and the territory is no different. Located in the vast acid lake of the Wyrmwound, this sizable island covers thousands of square miles, and is blanketed by a thick layer of radioactive fog produced by the radiation and acid storms of the Wyrmwound, fed by the island's own Mount Dremasul. The climate is unusually wet, dark, and dreary, accented by rolling pockets of radioactive mist and frequent radioactive thunderstorms amongst rugged terrain and menacing deadwoods. These storms are especially frequent among the higher elevations of the land. The island, however, is much more lush with fauna and flora than most of the Plaguebringer's realm, as the land and its creatures have adapted to their environment. Outside of its shores - and occasionally within - the seas are breached by contagion tusks, a common bone-like feature among Plague lands. These towering landmarks ward off unwanted visitors, and have become a graveyard for many enemy warships. The capitol is a hub of activity year-round, filled with all range of citizens and politicians. All embassies are located within the limits, as well as the lairs of the clan leadership. Almost all Venomshroud activity is directed via Cairnrest, which contains an equal amount of military and civilian premises. Cairnrest is well guarded with a wall of military bases surrounding the massive city on all sides. Here, visitors will find all manner of taverns, boutiques, workshops, and monuments. The city experiences less fog pollution due to inward sea winds and is the most neutral environment that dignitaries will experience on the island, weather-wise. The city is built to fit perfectly within the environment as to disrupt nature as little as possible, a benefit also exploited in times of war. Many of the massive lairs are constructed by the architect and are carved out of stone or marble, and much of the city's buildings are decorated with lavish furs and stones. Countless waterfalls and minor streams are diverted through the capitol for water features and easier access to purified drinking water. Because of its prowess and importance to not only the Venomshroud but foreign alliances, the streets of Cairnrest are scattered with hidden spies in nearly every nook and cranny. Such is the price of safety. Mount Dremasul: A massive volcano that actively spews toxic gas, contributing to the ever-present thick net of radioactive fog attempting to smother the island. The volcano is nestled within the Blackspine Mountains, with a series of contagion tusks rising to the south. The range is barren of most creatures and contains no settlements, as it is the most highly toxic location within the island. Few dragons dare to brave its peaks save Haloke herself, who regularly comes to bask in its poisons. The volcano is named after the clan's ancient guardian spirit, Dremasul, an ethereal being rarely seen throughout the centuries. Some more spiritual dragons make a pilgrimage to the crater to leave offerings such as food or flowers to the Plaguebringer and Dremasul, and Mournewind has drafted blueprints to craft a temple near the basin. Military Bases: Bases, such as Epoch Basiton and Cinderbane Watch, dot the entire island. These are housing and fueling stations for the warrior and mage guilds and stand to protect the territory. All contain extensive arms and biochemical weapons stores, ready to be deployed upon any attacker regardless of their allegiance. Bases along the shoreline and around the capital also function as checkpoints to control outsider access to the land. Psoron's headquarters is the largest base, nestled right against Cairnrest, though most warrior training takes place on the outskirts of the island away from civilian danger. Settlements: Isolated towns, such as Sahustag Vale and Chommisk North, may be found tucked into the wilderness every so often, most of which are lonely fishing villages. These towns are constantly battling the elements and are incredibly wary of outsiders. Though they lack the arms of bases, each settlement has its own militia that reports into the main guilds. Civilians mostly consist of hunters and scavengers, though the occasional craftsman or merchant may be found among their midst. Spies may also be found among settlers, though in times of peace they mostly camp among the wilds watching the coastline and lying in wait. Trade Depots: As Cairnrest contains the mass hub of innerclan trade, there are a few trading depots set up throughout the territory as easier access points for small settlements and travellers. At depots, visitors may expect to find more natural wares such as pelts, tusks, fresh game, and bone jewelry. For larger selections and more specialized gear, travelers must venture into Cairnrest, as the entirety of the merchant's guild is settled within the capitol city. Blacktail Basin: A region lying at the foot of the Blackspine Mountains, nestled underneath Mount Dremasul. This forgotten environment is ripe with flora and fauna, relatively unscathed from both the above ash and sunlight due to a thick canopy. Few have dared to explore this wilderness save scholars and hunters. The basin is ripe with overgrowth, ancient ruins, untouched artifacts, and a plethora of glowing mushrooms. The Basin is the continuous site of the Exalted March, and is generally regarded with both fear and wonder. Cloudscrape Mountains: A small mountain range curving throughout the eastern side of the island that is relatively purified from both the fog and acidic nature of the land. The gentle peaks are covered with vibrant flora and a massive range of forests and waterfalls which are purified by the volcanic rock underneath the island. This results in a localized purification system. All water flowing throughout Cloudscrape in the form of impossibly tall waterfalls and bubbling hot springs are naturally free of all radiation and toxic qualities, unlike anywhere else among the Isle. The Cloudscrape range is home to many non-Plague-born settlements and the beautiful Startouch Falls. This series of waterfalls weaves throughout the mountains until blending with a series of geysers and hot springs that are the main attraction of the Startouch Falls Spa, run by clanborn Starwind. The Guardian protects the falls and maintains its grounds, allowing dragons to visit and bathe within its waters for a small fee - usually some sort of good from the lower ranges or Cairnrest. Startouch Falls are closed to the public on the nights of the new and full moon for rituals and worship, where dragons may receive cleansing of radiation or request blessings from the Plaguebringer in the form of fertility, strength, wisdom, or spiritual enlightenment. Rainsong Lake: A small hamlet located near the border of the settled reaches of the Isle, only a few miles from the outskirts of the Blacktail Basin. This small fishing town is well-known for its prominent trade and is home to many shops ranging from ritual supplies to pottery kilns. All lairs are built upon an existing cliff face creating a wall on one side of the massive lake, either carved into the rockface or fastened as sturdily as possible without disrupting too much of the natural environment. All roofs are heavily layered with soil that supports trees and various crops that combine to shelter the village from prying enemy eyes. One would not notice the village was populated without already being upon the surface of the waters. The lake itself is a pesky problem for the hamlet. While it offers a steady supply of purified drinking water (fueled by a source from Startouch) and food sources in the form of fish and plants, it is home to several salmon-like serpents that rise out of the glassy water during their spawning season, which not only scare away traders but may attempt to attack the village itself. The Rainsong militia is well-equipped to fend off the serpents when they rise, but reconstruction efforts usually consume a hefty chunk of the hamlet's profits each year. A small sanctuary has been carved within the lower half of the cliff and extends far under the water level, offering shelter to all during any attack. Blackbone Tavern: This three-story tavern, owned and managed by Hawkfrost, serves an odd blend of brewed alcoholic beverages and drinks enchanted by mixology magic. Its walls are ancient, crafted of precisely-stacked grey stone and well-aged, darkly stained wood shaping stairways and the upper floors. Taxidermy stands frozen in time along shelves with massive racks of cervine antlers weaving along the walls to frame a giant handcrafted map of the ancient island. The black ink glints in the firelight, watching over the main hearth and its shimmering coals. Horn chandeliers hang from the ceiling filled with candles, swaying gradually in place. Torches line the upper floors and are perched across all manner of wooden tables. The floors are lined with pelts and hides, tables nestled amongst large cushions and stools to fit all sizes of dragons. The Blackbone Tavern is a hub of Cairnrest activity and is host to the majority of travellers, who will find enchanted cocktails, meads, martinis, and beers. Hawkfrost will be found behind the bar mixing and spellcasting, while small runic spirits actually wait tables and help serve. Library of Apocrypha: Since the Venomshroud's permanent settlement in the Wyrmwound, Bloomthorn has finally been able to construct a dwelling fitting of his needs and stature. He operates the massive Library of Apocrypha, an endless, spiralling tomb of knowledge. Floating tomes, ghostly self-writing quills, and small tornadoes of loose papers are often seen within. All visitors are greeted by a small army of Fallbrush Frauds and Slight Eyewings, eager to assist in the location of specific titles or areas of study. The only fee for entry is the donation of some form of knowledge, whether it be an old book, handwritten letter, dusty scroll, or whispered secret. Apocrypha is beginning to become a large landmark for travellers and is expanding with every donation. Luckily for viewers, the enchanted building is actually its own plane of existence fueled by the energy of the Wyrmwound, and is endlessly growing as it devours more and more knowledge. Cinderbane Watch: The Watch is perched among a massive wall of cliffs blocking direct entrance into Cairnrest lands, surrounded by narrow canyons and waterfalls on all sides, with the toxic sea to the north. This is a primary access point for most island visitors, and is a well-patrolled checkpoint. A large number of warriors are permanently stationed within the compound. Cinderbane Watch is carved into the innards of the cliff face, the stone seemingly perched and weightless among the rock. It extends deep within the belly of the earth to all manner of bunkers, armories, forges, and supplies of rhodochrosite, which is used in most enchantments. Most importantly, Cinderbane Watch houses a series of portals at the very base level, surrounded by wild lava and rotrock. These portals have the ability to connect all over not only the Isle but Plague as a whole, and are a vital asset in accessing allied territories during times of combat. Naturally, the Watch is fiercely guarded, and none have yet managed to invade the Isle past its protective wall. Epoch Bastion: Also known as the birthplace of magicks, Epoch Bastion is a mountain fortress far removed from the civility of Cairnrest. This is Oathstone's domain. The castle-like structure is built across several mountaintops, interlinking neighboring structures with various stone bridges and portals. Sprawling and maze-like, the Bastion is crafted mainly from stone imported from deposits across the Isle and carved from inside the mountain itself. While the mage headquarters boasts several stories of height, it also takes up space throughout the core of the mountain. However, unlike Cinderbane Watch, this rock was moved by earth magicks and willpower rather than natural erosion. Each building is devoted to a particular study of power, such as necromancy or elemental studies, and is host to every training mage at some point or another. Epoch Bastion is the hub of all mage activity despite its distance from much of civilization but requires distance due to the dangerous nature of activities taking place there. Riotous magicks are controlled, inexperienced mages are subdued, power is trained and managed, and occasionally prisoners of war may experience the darkest side the Venomshroud has to offer. The Bastion is open for foreign applicants during the spring and summer seasons, where mages may pay for training in the Plague tradition. Oberon Institute: Owned and operated by clan dragon Oberon, this operational facility would not be possible without the Venomshroud's recent push towards modernization and the expansions of their own technology. Here, Oberon and specialized members of the scholar guild work closely with injured dragons to create highly-functional, enchanted prosthetics. Though custom fittings are time-consuming and expensive, basic treatments are offered at no cost to any dragon who requires care. Implants, plates, and prosthetics may be custom-designed, enchanted, installed with hidden compartments, weaponized, or even made out of another dragon's biological mass. This technique is more popular with the combatives of the clan willing to take vengeance upon those who left them disfigured or worse. The Institute accepts patients across all of Sornieth, but is not responsible for any costs or liability associated with travel and boarding within Venomshroud territory. The First Lair - Temple of the Plaguebringer: A small cave carved by thousands of years of erosion, this miniscule den was the first home of Haloke during her initial teachings by the Mother. It looks as if a giant godly hatchet were swung at the side of the mountain, carving out a single horizontal chunk. Here, the Mirror could meditate among the toxic clouds of the distantly overhead Mount Dremasul, then unnamed. This was back when the Wasteland was newborn, and Haloke knew she would never forget her first shelter from the endless death and decay below. When the Venomshroud eventually returned centuries later and began to properly settle the Isle, the flattened peak of the mountain the cave was settled in the side of was constructed into a simplistic temple for the Plaguebringer. It is mainly marble and stone harvested from nearby deposits, with a ceiling and decorative walls of stained red mosaics. Inside are several relics of the clan's journeys including original writings of the Plaguebringer's teachings. A plaque marks this sacred space as well as an array of ever-burning torches and braziers. From a distance, this low mountain appears to be made of fire. The Temple itself is a marker for pilgrimages all across the Isle and is often a site of the payment of respects.

Relations - Diplomacy

Since its establishment, the Venomshroud have attracted their fair share of enemies and alliances. The clan offers protection and trade to allies, and expects similar treatment in return. They will aid in the defense of others if called upon, and will not fail to set a flurry of blade and fang against warranted foes.

Pale Wasteland:
In the search for the Venomshroud's sacred calling, Bloomthorn received a vision of a strange new disease scouring the Wastes. Sending a small platoon of warriors, they instantly saw the potential of this smaller clan and met Haldana in an effort to become allies. The Guardian quickly agreed, as such an alliance would bring greater protection to her charge, the territory. Their agreement is one of the oldest of the clans, each assisting the other in times of need and trading, otherwise respecting the other's borders. Haldana has shared some ideas for new strains for the exclusive use of the Venomshroud but otherwise keeps her disease a secret, and Sion has contributed altered recipes of her venomous concoction for Haldana to tweak at her leisure. Now that the Pale Wasteland has been absorbed by Earth clan The Labyrinthe, the future of their alliance is uncertain.

2.png
The Singularity:
Though their alliance was originally meager, the Singularity and Venomshroud clans have become near-inseparable. Over time trade and access to Apocrypha have transitioned into the Singularity's technological advancement techniques infiltrating the Venomshroud's way of life, resulting in the modernization of the Isle. After bringing widespread power to the island and heightening the efficiency of the fog condensers, the Venomshroud learned to develop more advanced weapons and armor along with easier refinement strategies. With the Singularity's constant aid in improving the Isle's civilized areas, the Venomshroud has been able to extract more potent radioactive ores within its territory. This ore may be painstakingly refined into a source of nuclear power. In the hands of the Singularity, it functions not only as a long-lasting nuclear battery but may eventually power entire clans. The fledgling technology is being actively researched by both clan's combined scholars, with each benefiting from the newfound source of energy.

Dead Stag:
Originally coming into contact in the early nomadic eras of the respective clans, this alliance is rooted in a deep reverence for Plague. Eons ago the clans nearly warred over territorial claims, scrapped constantly over resources, but knew they were too closely matched to compete with one another. While the option to merge their clans was offered, the Dead Stag eventually conceded and left the heart of the Wasteland to the Venomshroud. The clans have recently come back into contact in the past century due to a misunderstanding that left the Venomshroud's Tiberius wounded and nearly brought the fury of the Isle down upon the Shadow-bordering clan. However, in the fallout of the Bounty, each clan decided it would be better to link. Plague needs Plague, and each clan would rather be backed by their own kind than a foreigner in such dark times. The clans have since put the bad blood behind them and are now key training and trade partners, and is arguably the most reliable Plague clan the Venomshroud readily interacts with.

Firnhold:
Initially hired to aid in the clearing of the Firnhold's surrounding territory, the two clans have remained in close ties in order to share vast amounts of knowledge hidden within the Library of Apocrypha and the Ice clan's historic Vault. As their relationship strengthened, the Venomshroud established a small base of operations within the Firnhold as a refueling stop and military outpost. The Venomshroud has divided the majority of its working population into several large guilds - warriors, hunters, mages, scavengers, merchants, scholars, and entertainers - though several smaller organizations are clawing for the same recognition and population size. Guilds that directly serve the clan as protectors and gatherers are of the utmost priority and are seen as the most valuable to clan survival, which is a correct assumption. For this reason they boast the highest volume of members. Upon reaching adulthood, dragons may join the guild they so wish and receive training to become a fully-fledged guildmember. The establishment of these groups has become a binding factor in the island's culture, bonding all members of the Venomshroud in one way or another. Education Many of Cairnrest seek endless educational opportunities within Bloomthorn's ever-growing Library of Apocrypha, which is an endless, spiralling tomb of knowledge. Yet, it is much more challenging for those living in the far-reaching settlements of the wilderness to reach higher levels of education, which results in a lower literacy rate in most outlying woodland towns. To combat this, scholars accompany shipments of books into these towns that are returned once they have all been read. The campaign is showing slow levels of improvement, though rates are growing, especially among the hunter and scavenger guilds. Exaltation Haloke's mission focuses on the exaltation of highly-toxic offspring into joining the ranks of the Plaguebringer's ethereal army. Though the massive Ridgeback does a fantastic job laying large nests during every period of heat, this ideal is not held by only the clan matron. Reproduction for the purpose of exaltation is a core tenet of Venomshroud culture, and nearly every hatchling - even those scavenged and adopted - chooses exaltation upon reaching adulthood. This opportunity is one for glory and immortality, as well as bringing honor upon the clan and their families. Those who do not choose exaltation are not looked down upon but instead choose to serve in life by contributing to Haloke's mission of spreading the Plaguebringer's mantra. Customs It is customary for all visiting dignitaries to the clan to receive an etched warbeast tusk as homage to the clan's ancestral spirit. While merchants and ambassadors may bestow grand gifts of enchanted armor and silks upon guests, the general population is much more accustomed to simple furs and bone ornaments. Traditionally morbid Plague apparel is common throughout ranks and ranges from entire sets of armor to simple handmade jewelry, mostly consisting of scavenged remains or hunted organic materials. Though traditionally savage in nature, the more complex workings of the clan prove that Plaugelings are not only teeth and claws, but intense family units. The Venomshroud clan is tightly woven and incredibly well-connected despite the distance between some settlements. Bonfires, pit roasts, storytelling, and games are common throughout the island's population. The clan is not always so militarized and visitors are greeted by happy sights of hatchlings chasing familiars, cheery taverns, and constant music during downtime. Commerce The Venomshroud is known for its military prowess, but commerce is a close second in popularity. The clan's most valued export are small vials of organ-failure inducing poison from the resident toxicologist, Sion. Mixing Haloke's natural venom with her own incredibly deadly magic results in one of the most devastating weapons known to dragonkind. The Skydancer has perfected the brew over the years she's been with the clan, and though batches are small and incredibly expensive, the tiny vials of death are some of the most valuable products leaving the island. Coated on weapons or injected into arrows, the concoction can take down the largest of Guardians in mere seconds and wipe out entire Beastclans with ease. The merchant's guild offers broader and specialized areas of trade, such as enchanted weapons and armor, rare furs, alchemical ingredients, and radioactive island ores depending on the shop. For small clans, an escort for caravans or dignitaries may be arranged for a hefty fee. The clan rarely imports natural materials due to their environment, but is always in the market for new and innovative blueprints for housing and weaponry, specialized armors, and lavish items such as gems, jewelry, and silks. Much of the clan's merchant and scholar guildmembers jump at the chance for rare foreign alchemical ingredients and will offer a hefty sack of gems if the opportunity rises. Apocrypha is always hungry for more knowledge and all visiting traders are directed to Bloomthorn eventually, who will use the clan's main funds to acquire rare tomes and artifacts. The Fog A true constant of the Isle, the radioactive fog is understood by few and dangerous to all. Short exposure can lead to blurred vision, loss of memory, entering a dissociative state, and loss of emotional control. Prolonged exposure will inevitably lead to vivid hallucinations, hearing voices, and the complete loss of control. While most of the clan, especially those born within the Venomshroud, are resistant to its effects, the fog poses a deadly threat to newcomers and visitors who must be treated for its effects. If condensed and bottled, the fog could potentially be used as a mind-controlling drug. While the idea is only being researched, if the clan ever decided to put it to military use in the future, the Venomshroud would have an even deadlier edge against enemies of the Mother. Religion The general consensus of Plaguebringer worship throughout the Isle may be seen as similar to many basic Pagan ideals. Most lairs contain private altars to ancestors, guardian spirits, Haloke, and the Mother herself. These altars may display idols, icons, paintings, portraits, candles, curios, bones, furs, crystals, etc. There are multiple merchants throughout the island who sell a wide range of supplies for worship, but many clan dragons may choose to make or scavenge for their own tools. It is rare to find members of the Venomshroud who worship Haloke as an aspect of the Plaguebringer, but some may be found hidden deep within the wilderness, particularly in less-educated settlement areas. Cairnrest is dotted with multiple grand temples devoted to prominent exalted spirits, Haloke, and the Plaguebringer. One may find statues and memorials to the fallen and all of the above throughout the island. Some larger settlements may have shrines and small temples devoted to the Mother, or may simply worship in solitude. The clan celebrates many holidays throughout the year that include feasting, meditation, hunts, grooming, and pilgrimages, though most are celebrations of fertility and life. Clanmembers are not seen as full initiates unless they convert, and are awarded sub-par status until their full conversion. While the Venomshroud have no qualms about allying with non-devout clans, their own members must follow the Plaguebringer. The Exalted March Dremasul appeared to the clan once they were accepted into the core of the Wyrmwound as a physical spirit, tasked with protecting the Venomshroud from otherworldly opposition as his ethereal charge. This enemy later came to be known as Children of the Lost Sun, a nation of unsettled spirits continuously waging war against the Plaguebringer. While the Venomshroud is well-versed in the art of war, they are unable to physically harm or banish these spirits, but the Children are capable of irreparable harm upon the clan. Every hundred years or so, they reawaken in times of darkness or peril for the Isle, and the Venomshroud is forced to recruit hundreds of soldiers into exaltation so that they may serve the Plaguebringer and force the foes back into their restless slumber. Dremasul takes over the forces after their transition and leads them to battle. These dark stains of history have come to be known as The Exalted Marches. The Children are generally trapped within the Blacktail Basin, but have been known to spawn across the Isle when the veil is particularly thin. Clan Emblem Found among all official documentation, the clan emblem is stark enough to bring fear into the weak and pride into the strong. It consists of a carved warbeast skull, a bone sacred to Dremasul. The Plague sigil sits prominent upon the brow, a stick of ancestral incense clutched between its fangs. The incense smoke floats between the skull's eye sockets, reminding all viewers to remember their predecessors and honor the fallen. The emblem can be found emblazoned upon banners, armor, guild posts, buildings, doorways, statues, etc. Some incredibly devout clan members may carve warbeast skulls of their own to match the emblem and place them in a position of honor above their altars.
