Our clan has undergone many changes in recent seasons: the unification of three out of four of the old factions, the discovery and excavation of the Mage's city, the integration of its keepers, and certainly not least leaving behind the Shatterglass Caverns and migrating to this new but ancient city within the Lightweaver's lands. In an effort to hold fast to our identity as Shatterglass dragons amidst all these changes, we have sought here to record the lore and history of our clan, as much for our own use as for posterity's.

The Monarchy
The Shatterglass Sanctum is a hereditary monarchy, with the Matriarch or Patriarch serving as its sovereign. As with her role as High Priestess, her position is largely a ceremonial one, though her influence steers the direction of Shatterglass society, as evidenced by Starskimmer’s hand in the decision to migrate to the Sunbeam Ruins and join the Light flight.
As with most Shatterglass dragons, the Matriarch has multiple partners, but unlike the rest, she is expected to remain with her partners for life. (See "Romantic Relationships" for additional information on romantic partnerships within Shatterglass society.) These partners, all of whom must be Elders like herself (or a member of a younger generation, in the event of a future Matriarch or Patriarch from a younger generation), are known as the High Consorts. Their offspring are bestowed the title of Scion, with all the Scions' offspring likewise gaining the title of Scion. The heir-apparent is styled the Scion Ascendant.
As with all matters of policy, the rules pertaining to the monarchy were established by the High Council, and can only be modified during a Conclave.

The Line of Succession
The monarch's house is considered to contain their consorts, their children and descendants, and their parents and ancestors. The monarch's siblings and the consorts of the monarch's children and descendants are considered to be in separate houses and are not within the line of succession, but they may be considered in the decision to elect a new royal lineage should all members of the current lineage abdicate, expire, or decline the position.
The order of succession is as follows:

The oldest female scion

The next oldest female scion, until there are no further female scions available

The oldest male scion

The next oldest male scion, until there are no further male scions available

The senior-most high consort

The monarch holds the power to elect a suitable successor, should they have no scions and no consorts, until they do have at least one of either. In the event that the monarch were to die or abdicate without providing any scions, being survived by any consorts, or having appointed a suitable successor, the High Council, High Priest, and Oracle would convene to elect a new royal lineage.
Before any dragon may be elevated to the role of Matriarch or Patriarch, the High Council must declare them to be sound of mind and the High Priest and Oracle must attest to them having a close connection with the gods. If they are deemed unfit, they will be passed over for the next in line.
The current line of inheritance is as follows:

The Matriarch
Matriarch Starskimmer | Starskimmer is the only monarch the Shatterglass have known as of yet. Much beloved by the Shatterglass, her primary duty is the maintenance of peace and the settling of disputes among clan-members, which she handles skillfully due to her naturally diplomatic nature.

Partnerships & Families
Romantic Relationships
Pansexuality and polyamory are considered the norm within Shatterglass society. Cultural emphasis is placed on the maintenance of peace and the raising of hatchlings as the reasons why romantic relationships ought to exist. To those ends, faithfulness and procreation are encouraged, and same-sex partnerships typically pursue the adoption of hatchlings from outside the clan. Separation is rare but not unheard of, but the abandonment and exposure of hatchlings is punishable by exile.
The nobility are expected to conform to particularly stringent rules laid down by the High Council. The Matriarch may choose as many consorts as she wishes and as consent to be such, but they must be elders, like herself. Being looked to as the embodiment of the virtues the Shatterglass are expected to uphold, lack of faithfulness to her consorts would be enormously frowned upon. Likewise, the Consorts of the Matriarch are expected to remain faithful to her to the point of monogamy for the sake of appearances, a source of some tension between them and the other members of the Council.
Family Dynamics
Generally, multiple generations live within one lair. Family members tend to pursue related occupations, share a common hoard, and all share in the duty of tending nests. Historically, the primary exception has been when one's offspring chose to change factions, in which case relations became strained between parent and child. With times changing, however, and the concept of factions becoming less and less relevant as most were absorbed into the general public body over the past several years, this problem is becoming increasingly uncommon, and diversification of occupations within one family more acceptable.
The only duty which is typically not shared is a spiritual one: within most family lairs, one member is chosen to serve as family priest or priestess, and honor and make offerings to the family's gods and spirits on behalf of all the family members. Most lairs contain a small alcove carved into a wall just within the entrance where the family's gods and spirits are served by the family priest or priestess.
Statues like this are often given to matriarchs and mothers in hopes that their hatchlings develop strong and able. Many clans keep one in each of their nests for luck.

Religion & Spirituality
The religious among the Shatterglass are polytheistic. While the Lightweaver, the deity of their flight, is always honored first, the Priesthood serves and honors all of the Eleven, and a family lair may honor one or many among them at their alcove-shrines and throughout their days. Exaltations are considered offerings not just to the deity who they will serve, but to all the deities; it is believed that the Eleven are part of a great cosmic plan, and that offerings to any of them contribute to the plan that involves them all.
Spirits of the Land
While they may not be believed to serve as great of a role in the cosmic plan as the gods, it is considered equally important to honor and offer to the spirits of the land. Maintaining peace with the local spirits is deemed an absolute necessity, even among those who choose not to honor the Eleven, and offerings and divination are always performed prior to any construction or cave excavation to ensure the effect on the landscape will not be at odds with the desires of the land spirits. Natural disasters are considered to be evidence of the spirits' displeasure.

The common theory is that the shatterglass crystals, which the most spiritually-inclined within the clan have always claimed to hear whispering to them, have directed them to move deeper into the caverns and study from the crystals themselves. Hermits are never pursued and so are never seen by those outside the priesthood, with the priests and priestesses of the folk bringing all the necessities to their lairs deep within the caverns.

The highest point of the Shatterglass Sanctuary is the old Magetower, built in the Age of Men. While most of the Shatterglass dragons prefer the caverns, with their lush mosses, subterranean waterfalls, and glittering, luminescent crystals from which the clan draws its name, the first Shatterglass Fae chose to roost in the spire of the Magetower. Though the tower’s foundations were embedded within the stone of the Sanctuary’s caverns, its upper half emerged above the ground, placing its spire high above the dangers of potential predators on the surface. The ivy and vines dripping from the tower’s elegant Gothic windows and cylindrical walls provided superb padding for their nests, and in time they had picked the tower clean of its overgrowth, inadvertently reclaiming the tower from nature’s grasp.
The Fae families who brooded in the spire thought little of this, beyond observing that there was insufficient plant matter remaining for new nests; so the enterprising little creatures turned toward the other organic materials in the tower. Silks that had once served as opulent draperies, intricately illuminated manuscripts and carefully transcribed leatherbound tomes -- what hadn't completely turned to dust in the countless years since their creation by mortal hands now rested beneath the petite eggs of the Fae. Steadily, unintentionally, the Magetower was being emptied of the debris of eons.
The Shatterglass Fae were still blind to their actions, but they did not escape the notice of others in the Sanctuary, Arcane creatures who were, like the Fae, naturally drawn to the power slumbering in this place, power which had begun to awaken and course through its stone walls once again. Those dragons whose primary occupation was mining the shatterglass crystals in their caverns began to transport some of their finds each day to the tower. Repairs began without any formal discussion or agreement amongst the Sanctuary's members; they worked diligently, tirelessly, as if both entranced and supernaturally fortified. A symbiosis was emerging between the Magetower and the dragons of the Shatterglass caverns.
After many years of steadfast effort, the revitalization of the ancient tower was complete. The shatterglass stones which had been carefully, lovingly carved from the underground halls and embedded into the tower’s walls refracted and amplified the magic coursing from foundation to spire. This energy, and the new purpose to which the Fae had originally put it, earned the old Magetower a new moniker for a new era: the Living Tower.
Over the years it had become the most auspicious place in the Sanctuary to roost and bring new life to the Shatterglass brood, where the hatchlings could still be imbued by the tower’s potent magic. Inspired by this behavior and perhaps due in part to the inability of the larger breeds to roost in the Tower, the Shatterglass dragons ceased breeding in the traditional way; instead, dames began bearing unfertilized eggs, which sires would imbue with their essences in a spiritual simulacrum of biology.
Finally, after years of effort, as the Shatterglass dragons gathered and gazed up at their completed creation, their offering to the living magic there, they felt its pulse and knew it wanted one thing more: to spread this magic across Sornieth. They knew that each hatchling imbued with this magic, this blend of ancient power and the Arcanist’s gift, would benefit its new clan in unfathomable ways; and that some spark of it would remain in that dragon’s lineage, passed through the blood.
And what better way to spread something across the vastness of the globe than trade? And so an emporium was born. Just as the crystals decorating the tower’s spire refract the morning light, dispersing it into the ether, so too do Magisters believe their nursery sends the Magetower’s magic out into the unknown.

The Wildlings

The Wildlings are wanderers. They do not share the dislike and even fear of the "Land Above" with their fellow Shatterglass dragons, and roam the many regions of Sornieth. Their wanderlust makes them so wildly different than the Shatterglass who prefer the sanctuary of the Sanctum that many, particularly many Arcanites and Magisters, look upon these misfits with disgust, but the Wildlings are largely unconcerned by this. If anything, it's something of a blessing for many Wildlings, who prefer not to feel confined by anything, including social rules.
While there is a social hierarchy within their faction, Wildlings primarily feel themselves to be governed by natural law, which they refer to as the Call. When Wildlings refer to themselves as "answering the Call," they are referring to listening to the call of nature to be one's truest and freest self, of their curiosity's call to forgotten and remote places, of the spirit of adventure to go out and explore. It can also be deadly serious, encompassing such concepts as the cycle of life and death, and the risks and self-sacrifice the hunter must be prepared to make if their prey proves to be their match. The philosophy of the Call is specific to Wildlings and so frequently misunderstood or even unknown within wider Shatterglass society, though in recent years it has gained greater recognition through the publication of Duskdreamer's books on the Call, which illustrate both its romantic and realistic nature.
Despite Duskdreamer's skill as a writer, his books would likely not have had much of an impact if written by any other Wildling. But the Chieftain of the Wildlings is also a consort to the Matriarch, giving him status among the Shatterglass of the other factions even while they view his faction and its behaviors with disdain.
Next within the social hierarchy of the Wildling faction comes the Chieftain's Second, a loyal companion and advisor both to the Chieftain and to their fellow Wildlings. This role is currently occupied by Tai, and will likely remain so for many more years to come given the bond between him and Duskdreamer and the faith the other Wildlings have in him. While the Chieftain largely sets the direction and focus of the group and is then left to his own pursuits, and has many duties as a member of the High Council besides, the Second is far more like a military captain, in the field with their subordinates, training and supporting them personally. Most Wildlings feel close ties with Tai and a strong sense of loyalty to Tai for this reason.
No formal hierarchy exists beyond the Chieftain's Second, but social order exists nonetheless, influenced primarily by the Call, which informs the Wildlings who to trust as leaders based on a dragon's experience, skill, passion, and actions towards others. While only the Chieftain and his Second can officially give orders, it would be a violation of the Call not to do as directed by a Wildling of seniority, unless they were leading another into a decision that itself would be a violation of the Call.
Wildlings are largely unconcerned with treasure and wealth and do not have professions and occupations, instead taking on temporary work. Such services include serving as guides and protective escorts, hunting and removing invasive fauna and flora, collecting hard-to-find herbs and other resources, and training dragons with limited experience beyond their lairs in wilderness and survival skills. They consider these services part of answering the Call, which includes working in concert with all life, including dragon-kind. These jobs also provide Wildlings with just enough treasure to exist and trade within the Shatterglass Sanctum and dragon society at large; both hoarding wealth and asceticism are considered violations of the Call.
This work also gains them notice and respect from other clans and wanderers. Indeed, despite occupying the lowest echelon of Shatterglass society and having their lifestyle frequently viewed as barbaric, the actions of the Wildling tribe are one of the largest reasons new dragons are attracted to the Shatterglass Sanctum, perhaps being as influential in this regard as the trade relations of the Magisters.
