The eldest of five siblings, he was expected to set an example for them, especially in their studies of magic. He didn't mind this, for the knowledge he acquired gave him abilities he had never before dreamed of. He could make things tremble if he gave them a hard look, and later on he could move them without coming near. His abilities grew until it became a regular occurrence for him to set things on fire or make them explode if he so much as glanced at them. It wasn't his abilities that gave his teachers pause, though -- it was his attitude. Where other hatchlings would fall over themselves apologizing for their mistakes, Alberge didn't care. His star-colored eyes shone, and he immediately would wheel around, looking for something else to practice on. He was disciplined accordingly, again and again, until he sullenly apologized and achieved some semblance of good behavior. Before he reached adulthood, he and his siblings were sent out into the world. Some of them put down roots in other clans. Others were trained to serve various deities. Alberge himself was quickly taken in by a clan who called themselves the Disillusionists. They had begun forming alliances with clans in other flights and were looking for elemental ambassadors. Alberge, with his potent powers, was tapped as a candidate. He looked around the clan, sizing up the competition. There wasn't really any to speak of: the only other Arcane dragon in the clan was a flighty young Skydancer who seemed to prefer gambolling about outside rather than exercising his magic. Alberge smirked and continued his "studies" with a will. Months passed. The clan had many Ice dragons, and Alberge watched with interest as the process for selection of the Ice ambassador continued. There were many candidates, but over time, the rest of them found more pressing responsibilities or decided they just weren't up to it. There were some who were completely excluded from the selection process -- for example, Metalicana was an Ice dragon possessed of formidable magic. But he had come to the clan as a hostile intruder, and had joined it in disgrace. No clan in their right mind would choose him as a diplomatic ambassador, at least not until he'd learned a great deal of manners....Alberge turned away from him. Soon the selection process was completed: the role of Ice ambassador was delegated to Hiveriel, a Tundra with a warm and loving heart. But Alberge didn't see that, and instead nodded approvingly at the Tundra's mastery of Ice magic. Alberge thought himself a master of Arcane magic, with his abilities to make things explode, to move whatever he laid eyes on, and to shake reality in short bursts. He didn't acknowledge the fact that these things were now happening whether or not he willed them to. All it took was for something strange to happen, and he would preen and remark on how it was undoubtedly a byproduct of his burgeoning abilities. The other dragons nodded uncertainly, but really, the word they were focusing on was not "ability", not even "magic" -- it was the word "byproduct". Byproducts were almost always unintentional. Alberge didn't want to see it, but the other dragons could and they did: he was losing control of his powers -- assuming he'd had any control over them to begin with. It would have been better if he had acknowledged his faults, but he did not, or perhaps he could not. He'd gotten lost in a dream of grandeur, and there was no waking up when he didn't want to. "There are none so blind", the elder Disillusionists sighed, "as those who will not see." Quietly, and without consulting Alberge, they removed his name from the list of candidates. Then they went looking for another candidate. And so Alberge remained lost in his dreams of glory, not seeing reality unfold around him. Even when the clan leaders' daughter returned with a bright pink Spiral tucked under her wing, and the Spiral peeked out with bright pink eyes, he didn't consider how his position might not be as secure as he'd originally thought. So finally, when it was the Spiral, and not he, who was granted the position of Arcane ambassador, Alberge's dream didn't just break, it exploded. It fell to dust around him like the countless artifacts he'd practiced on, and he stared in disbelief as the young Spiral was presented with a Starlight Cloak made specially by the dragons of the Starfall Isles. Magic crackled through the smaller dragon's crystal body, and Alberge turned and slunk away from his brilliance. For a long time, he nursed his wounded ego in silence. His dreams of Arcane glory were gone -- but not dead. No, instead, they reassembled themselves into something different. Now he was dreaming of glory...the glory of leading a clan. Alberge didn't think about founding one; he had no mate or children and wasn't inclined to marry. Instead...yes. The clan he'd put down roots in would serve him just as well. They all knew him, and he knew them, too. It would be easy enough to undermine them and then manage them once he was the lord.... And so he clung to a new dream. He would attain leadership of this clan. He'd make them regret passing him over for some young upstart, the spawn of no-name parents from a clan he hadn't even heard of. He'd show them how majestic a leader he could be, a worthy vessel for the glory of the Arcane Flight, not just an ambassador, or even a lord, but a king, or possibly...dare he think of it?...an emperor.... When he was assigned the role of clan guard, it was all he could do to choke down his disappointment. He accepted his new assignment coolly and civilly. Now, soldier, put it on.... Some days later, he was standing guard, waiting out the hours until the shifts changed. His companion was Metalicana, the Guardian who had intruded upon the clan and been forced to join it as a punitive measure. He had challenged the progenitors for control and been soundly beaten, and the main reason he kept to their rules was because he was afraid of feeling their wrath again. He had been defeated by them in full view of the rest of the clan, and as a matter of fact, Alberge had been there....He had only been a hatchling then, huddling behind the matron's legs and watching curiously as Lord Nachtstreiter had beaten back the larger Guardian before eventually forcing him to the ground, one forepaw on his gleaming throat. Alberge made some comment: an idle statement about how much time had passed since Metalicana had been recruited by the clan. He was such an upstanding member of it now, and to think that he had originally come here as an enemy! To which Metalicana had snarled, "Don't talk to me about that." Any other dragon would have been cowed by the Guardian's ferocity, by the unspoken threat of violence, but Alberge was too far gone to know fear. He saw the glint of bitterness in the crystal Guardian's eyes, and all he felt was a twisted sort of hope. Perhaps he did have an ally in this wretched place, after all. Alberge was born to a mighty clan in the Arcane lands. The eldest of five siblings, he was expected to set an example for them, especially in their studies of magic. The machine can now be used to freeze things and people, and even after it's turned off, the elapsed-time effects won't impact whatever was caught in its beam. It requires a lot of power to use, however, so it is used only in emergencies, particularly medical ones. It has also been used to subdue hostile beings such as Euclid and Apophys. Some beings are immune to its effects.
• Crystaline also frequently works together with Karmanh. They are both interested in robotics and do regular studies and maintenance on the clan's artificial members.
• His familiar, Lucrezia, also serves as a lab assistant.

That still didn’t stop him from doing a double-take when he saw the glistening iceberg jutting out of the forests of the Windswept Plateau. He hovered and squinted—it was still there. A huge chunk of ice, glittering like a great diamond, surrounded by towering bamboo trees. The forest had begun to grow around and over it; it resembled a gigantic egg laid in a nest of overgrown reeds. The Nocturne glided closer. As he did, he saw wisps of vapor swirling up from the iceberg. He felt the chilliness of it. He squinted, saw something encased deep within the ice.... Fast-forward a couple of minutes later, and he was flying back to his team as fast as his wings could carry him. "How old was it? How long has it been like that?" he was thinking all the while. For underneath the ice was a great structure, one that had been carved by dragon claws and magic. The ice had entrapped a full lair. The question now was: Was it still inhabited, or un-? And if it was, what of the inhabitants? The Disillusionists came back to the lair to investigate. After their Ice ambassador assessed the situation, they set to work, digging and scraping. The Ridgebacks bored through, building a tunnel from the outside world through the deep blue ice. The rest of the investigators clumped outside and did their best to ignore the noise. “I’ve never seen anything like it before,” said Hiveriel. He was agitatedly grooming his coat, smoothing the deep blue fur over and over again. The other dragons regarded him with some amusement. “I’d be surprised if you’d seen anything like it,” Veritas said lazily. “Weren’t you only a hatchling when you first came to our clan? And didn’t you grow up in the Sunbeam Ruins?” “Umm,” said Hiveriel, and he flattened his ears in embarrassment. They were only teasing him. They’d done some investigating before coming over and had to agree with him: the situation certainly was unusual. “I’m guessing it’s a magic spell gone wrong,” said Hiveriel, a few minutes before Adrastos managed to poke his nose through the last layer of ice. The Ridgebacks cleared the ice chips away. They huddled together, their spines clattering as they shivered. The other dragons moved cautiously into the tunnel and then they peeked into the lair. It was somewhat larger than the Disillusionists’ home. After the investigators poked around, they made another discovery: the lair was frozen inside as well. But not literally frozen, wrapped in ice. No... The lair was frozen in time. They came across the inhabitants, a large assortment of dragons all paused in the middle of various tasks. Sleeping, cooking, cleaning.... “What happened here?” breathed Nachtstreiter. Hiveriel’s hackles were raised. “It’s sorcery,” he said, “but I’m unfamiliar with it. It doesn’t...” He took several long, deep sniffs. As the others watched him, he admitted, to their further bafflement, “It doesn’t smell entirely of magic. There’s something else mixed in.” They found a likely explanation. Near the center of the lair was a largish room—a lab by the looks of it. A large machine leaned against one wall. Its blocky shape was at odds with the bell that extended from its top, curving gently like a flower. Faint blue light poured from it, bathing the lair and the dragons nearby. Several of them had been caught in the beam; they hung suspended, claws outstretched and jaws agape. Even their clothes were frozen as if they’d been photographed in mid-flight. The Disillusionists clustered on the edges of the room. They avoided the cone of light; they could feel the chill wafting away from it. Hiveriel shivered and pointed to it, whispering that it was sorcerous and should not be touched. “How are we to release them from this enchantment, then?” Nachtstreiter inquired. As they discussed among themselves, the Ridgebacks wandered in. Adrastos sat down, his spiked tail twitching against the floor, but Hemera ambled around the room. She eyed the blocky machine curiously. With a great sigh like a long, drawn-out groan of thunder, the blue light faded and plunged the lair into darkness. The dragons yelped and turned around, feet and tails thudding. Thankfully, light still seeped in through cracks in the icy walls, so they could see Hemera crouching by the machine. Its bell was now tilted down like a wilting flower. “What did you do?” Veritas gasped. The Ridgeback winced and prodded her claws together. They made a hideous snick-snick sound. “I wanted to take a look at it. I may, um, have poked it a bit. Maybe.” Then they all heard another sound. It was unmistakable: a soft sigh, an extended breath. The other dragons, the ones who’d been frozen—they were waking up again. They were breathing. “Still alive!” Hiveriel gasped in relief. As if that had been a signal, they heard a creeping, cracking noise. The ice that had encased the lair was finally falling away. The dragons of the Wind clan were largely all right, but they had not escaped their ordeal unscathed. They were incredibly hungry and thirsty but didn’t have enough strength to gather food. The Disillusionists took it upon themselves to share some of their stores. When they returned, the situation in the lair still hadn’t calmed down. Some of the dragons spoke of leaving. There were not a few hostile glances cast towards a Wildclaw, whom the Disillusionists soon learned was their engineer. His name was Crystaline—due to the color and luster of his scales, doubtless. He meekly accepted the food he was given and ate by himself. He remained crouched next to the machine, which he’d partly dismantled. It was Frostlyn, with her large and compassionate heart, who sat down next to him. After a brief silence, she commented, “Good thing Rofthoffer passed by when he did. Otherwise things might’ve turned out worse.” “I suppose they could’ve, at that,” Crystaline agreed reluctantly. He was somewhat older than most of the Disillusionists and seemed positively weary at that point. “That’s an interesting contraption. Did you make it yourself?” Crystaline affirmed this. He had, he explained, been trying to create a device that would stop other dragons from becoming hungry or thirsty. “But as you can see, it didn’t work that way,” he admitted. “Our bodily functions were paused for a while, but when you un-paused the machine, all our appetites caught up to us.” He frowned and scratched his head. “Gonna have to work on that further, I guess.” “Are you from the Shifting Expanse?” “Me? Naw.” His eyes were light blue, as pale as the ice that’d encased his home. “I was born in the Southern Icefield. My mother was a Lightning dragon born and bred, though—guess I get some of my tinkering talents from her.” He smiled faintly. “She’d probably yell at me for this, too.” He seemed to notice Frostlyn more carefully now. He watched the light playing over her wings. “And you, young miss? You from the Stormlands as well?” Frostlyn shook her head. She half-spread her wings, explaining how she’d acquired this marvelous prosthesis from the Lightning dragons. Crystaline was quite curious; he continued to ask questions, some of which Frostlyn could barely answer. She explained as best as she could, all the while ignoring the wary looks Crystaline’s clanmates were shooting her. It was obvious that they were worrying about what else he would build, and what other bonkers effects it would have on themselves and their lair. In time, the lair was back in working order. Some of the dragons were indeed preparing to leave, Crystaline among them. His clanmates no longer trusted him after his disastrous experiment, and they requested that he join a new clan. His situation wasn’t as dire as it should’ve been. The Disillusionists had agreed to take him in. “You don’t eat much, and we could use an engineer,” Veritas had told him. She had arched an eyeridge. “After all, you don’t spend all your time building newfangled contraptions, do you? I assume you know basic electronic repairs, like with copper wiring and fuses and such.” Crystaline did know basic electronic repairs; it was where he’d gotten his start. As his new clanmates prepared to guide him back, they asked him, “Are you ready to go?” He was. His old freezing machine had been disposed of, but he still had his blueprints, and the lands of Light were rich in resources....Perhaps in time, with other dragons to assist him, he’d be able to refine his invention, put it to good use. The Disillusionists were quite open-minded about his work, so long as he tested his inventions deep beneath the earth or out in the open. He toddled around the room, looking curiously at the various parts and half-finished devices on display. “I’m drawing a plan for a machine,” Crystaline answered. “Would you like to see?” He held up the blueprint, a new draft of the invention that had frozen his former clan some years before. “It’s very nice,” Jubilant answered politely. “It’d be great if you could fetch some things from around my room. Would you like to help me?” Crystaline asked. He’d meant it facetiously, but Jubilant gave him an eager nod. And as he did, light crackled briefly through his body: bright white light, like a star tearing across the night sky. Very quick—but Crystaline knew what he’d seen. He’d found an assistant, if not a friend. Would the Arcane Spiral’s magic be a help or a hindrance? Only time would tell. Bio: No | Lore: Weirdly, no, but he's got a ton of cameos. | Art: Yes
Jump to lore: (none yet)

Factions: The SKWAD
Possible Connections in: Alliances & Diplomacy
• Jubilant was purchased at around the time I was becoming familiar with the concept of Flight Reps. I scried him as an adult, and bam, he was a real winner!
• Named "Jubilant" because his colors remind me of cherries jubilee. And he looks like he's made of gelatin!
• Despite not having any dedicated lore of his own, Jubilant is crucial in a lot of other dragons' stories. Funny how things turn out.
• His magic was initially as unstable as Alberge's first -- perhaps even more, since he is incredibly powerful. His edge over Alberge was that, in addition to his powers being identified when he was young, he was very receptive to training and always willing to heed more experienced sorcerers' advice.
• His accent will also be tied to his lore, once I get around to writing it. I hunted for it for a long time and was so, so stoked when it finally popped up on the AH for treasure. X'D
