They stayed here, for they were jewelers, and while they used many different gems in their work, they specialized in freshwater pearls, which they cultivated. By the time Nacre was born, his family had grown to be not just wealthy, but also respected. Their customers came from all over Sornieth, and while other Flights sometimes viewed Shadow with suspicion, the jewelers were known for being thoroughly professional, honest and trustworthy. They prided themselves, too, on having kept the business in their family for generations. Any children who showed an interest in the shop were encouraged to learn more about it. Nacre was no exception: It seemed that from the moment he could walk, he spent plenty of time in the shop, surrounded by display shelves of jewelry. He was a largely well-behaved child...though at times he babbled a lot, usually when customers were around. His parents didn't entirely approve of this, but they tried to be patient. He was very young, after all. As for Nacre himself, at that young age, he didn't yet have the words to express himself clearly. He knew only that at times, the orb upon his brow grew uncomfortably cold, always in response to others' words. It usually happened with customers: The orb didn't react whenever they entered the shop, and it usually stayed quiescent while they were talking with his parents. But certain words, certain phrases, caused the orb to become as chill as ice. And as he grew older and the world grew more familiar, he began to see a pattern— "Congratulations again on your upcoming marriage, sir. Please sign the receipt for your purchase...." "Of course, of course! Nothing but the best for my mate-to-be, eh? After all, I really do love them." The Wildclaw's face shone with a smile...but it was a smile that did not quite reach his eyes, and Nacre flinched back from the waves of coldness that rippled from him. He found himself worried for the Coatl who draped a wing around their mate, clearly unaware of the apathy blooming inside him. And that Wildclaw wasn’t the only one who made Nacre feel uneasy. There were many others— "I love her," a Ridgeback professed, reaching out to caress her beloved's mane. But as Nacre's orb burned, he noticed how her eyes lingered on the gems gleaming upon the Imperial's hide, her claws pausing for just a bit too long on the shimmering chains. "I love him," said a Guardian, but her words didn't quite ring true. Her gaze was rather distant, her thoughts were far away.... “I love you,” said a Spiral, in response to his partner’s query. But he spoke just a bit too quickly, and he avoided her gaze. "I love them...her...him...you..." Declarations of love, every one of them false—and whenever those words were spoken, Nacre thought he could almost see the lie, a faint violet mist briefly clouding the dragons' faces. Out of concern for those being lied to, he found himself perusing periodicals and listening in on others' discussions, even striking up conversations a few times. He asked after the dragons who’d unnerved him—and those whom they’d deceived. Had loved bloomed for them after all, or had it instead shriveled into grief? He had to know if that sense of foreboding was right. More than that, though, he hoped it was wrong. Most dragons were amused by how inquisitive this hatchling was, but they invariably grew uneasy at how he seemed to be fixated on certain dragons and their personal lives. Naturally, when Nacre's parents heard about this, they decided to have a chat with their son. They sat him down one evening and gently but firmly explained that it wasn't polite to pry into other dragons' affairs. "But I'm trying to help them," protested the hatchling. "They should know that they're being lied to. Lies are bad, right? Right?" His parents, Skydancers both, exchanged puzzled glances. Like others of their breed, their orbs could be used to sense magical energies and the emotions of other creatures. They had sensed unease in some of the customers Nacre now singled out for them, but unease did not necessarily equal dishonesty—indeed, other customers, whom Nacre had detected no deception in, had at times been uncomfortable as well. They explained this to Nacre, who remained troubled, but quietly accepted their words nonetheless. He now had something else to be unnerved about, however: He understood that this talent of his wasn't normal like he'd thought, and he would have to be very careful about revealing it to other people. Still, it was so hard to keep it bottled inside. So much deception and dishonesty...Perhaps he wouldn't have minded it so much if the lies had been about small, inconsequential things. But these dragons chose to lie about something sacred and profound, and that rattled him to the core. His parents, too, remained worried, and they suggested that Nacre focus more on making jewelry. Over the next several years, he spent most of his time in the workshops, crafting the ornaments that brought his family much fortune and renown. Shut away behind thick walls and doors, hidden from curious visitors, Nacre became more invested in his work. He grew steadily more skillful, producing delicate tiaras and wing ornaments, earrings and bracelets that winked with bright metal and gems. They were finer than anything his ancestors had ever made, and soon, customers were asking for pieces made specifically by him. Nacre's parents handled the transactions at first, but as time passed, customers grew more insistent: They wanted to speak directly with the jeweler who made these ornaments, wanted him to create custom pieces for them. The two elder Skydancers conferred, and they decided that it was time for Nacre to interact more with others. He was by then still in his teens, but it would not do for him to be reclusive forever. "Perhaps, too, that other ability of his has faded," they said. "Many magical abilities are like that—they grow dormant when unused for some time. And it has been years since the last incident; he's surely outgrown it by now." Nacre agreed with his parents, albeit with reluctance. But he, too, began feeling hopeful as he met more dragons. His parents introduced him to kind, honest folks who were genuinely happy to work with him. The young Skydancer began to feel more relaxed; perhaps his parents were right. Perhaps his strange ability had been some fluke of magic, and he could safely shrug it off now.... Another day, another client—two, to be precise. Nacre's father introduced him to the Tundra couple. They were engaged, and wanted to commission the young jeweler to create some ornaments for their wedding. "We have been planning this ceremony for months! We're so excited to spend the rest of our lives together..." The cold rolled over Nacre like the shadow of a raincloud: slow but inevitable, sending chills over his scales. His orb grew chilly, until it felt like a knife point pressed against his skull. He tried to unruffle his mane and feathers as he looked at the couple more closely. They seemed at ease with each other, nothing amiss...but he knew that feeling. He knew the cold foreboding of a lie that starts out small, but will eventually shatter everything it's built upon.... "Umm, maybe you need more time?" he asked, smiling feebly. The Tundras blinked at him. The one on the right rumbled, "No, everything's right on schedule. We've organized the ceremony so carefully—" "And we are very excited about it!" the other one said. Another wave of coldness rolled over Nacre: "They're both lying! They're fooling themselves...and each other! Why won't they...?" "I don't know, I'm not sure I can work with customers who are, um, unsure about what they want." It was a useful phrase he'd learned from his parents. He drew himself up as he said it, even managed to make it sound solid and officious. But it didn't have the desired effect this time. "We are certain. We were told you were the best jewelers in these parts..." "Is anything wrong?" Nacre's father approached them, his face furrowed in concern. "It's just...I don't think this is a good idea..." "But we do want to work with you, young sir. The two of us discussed it, and our clans recommended you. We want this wedding to be perfect. We want nothing but the best for—" "But you don't even love each other!" The words left Nacre's mouth in a wail. And then he slumped, utterly defeated, because his secret had come to light again. His father's face darkened with anger. But he was completely eclipsed by the rage that now appeared on the Tundras' faces. They were angry too—not at Nacre, but at each other. "I knew it," one of them hissed. "My siblings said that your proposal wasn’t worth—" "My proposal?! You were the one throwing yourself at me—" "You strung me along! What—you couldn't break it off civilly, you cowardly worm?!" "I would've been able to, if you hadn't flaunted me like a trophy every chance you'd got!" The two of them were glowering at each other now, fur bristling wildly, canines bared. Nacre felt his father pulling him towards the door. The older Skydancer was talking urgently to the workers clustered outside, telling them to bring the guards. The couple—if they could even still be called that—was ejected before they could damage the wares or each other. As they were forcibly escorted away from the shop, they could be heard raging at each other, "This isn't over yet!" "Famous last words," Nacre's father muttered dryly. And then he gave his son a stern look. "We'll have to discuss this later, too." Nacre gulped and nodded. It looked as though his tribulations were only just beginning. The discussion, Nacre’s parents decided, was going to be calm and civil. From their point of view, it was supposed to end with their son bowing his head contritely and promising never to poke his snout into others' lives again. "They've made their own decisions, Nacre," his mother told him. "These are grown dragons, and they'll be able to deal with the consequences of their actions." "But what about those who are being lied to? The ones who don't know that their relationships are shams?" Nacre was already misty-eyed with stress; he shook the tears away. "Are they supposed to deal with...to suffer just because they didn't know, not until it was too late?" His father's face hardened. "As your mother said, their lives are their own affairs. Leave them to it. We only make the ornaments they desire, nothing more." "But what should I do if—" "You will do nothing, Nacre. Nothing beyond what you were trained to do. You will assist our customers, help them complete their purchases, and accept their payment. If they lie to others in their lives, it's none of our business. Our business, my boy, is this shop and our wares." Nacre's scales grew cold again, though this time, it was not with the chill of a lie. It was with something worse: the steely frigidity of realization. He felt the calmness of it settle over him, his mane and wings smoothening. "You mean you’re worried...because of the shop? About our work...our money?" His parents nodded earnestly. "That's right. Our family built this place up from nothing. There used to be nothing here but a barren stretch of shoreline..." "I've heard the clan history before. Thank you, Mother, Father." Nacre rose, nuzzled their cheeks gently. "I understand your concerns completely now." They smiled at him in relief and bade him good night. The discussion, they felt, had been a good one and had gone exactly as they’d hoped. "To think that all he needed was a stern talking-to. He's such an obedient boy..." But the next day, when they woke up, Nacre was gone. The two Skydancers quickly became frantic with worry. His room had been tidied up, and no note had been found. The guards, of course, hadn't seen him leave: He'd lived here his whole life, and knew their schedules by heart. He would know how to evade them. Nacre's parents felt that same chill of realization creep over them. They knew they'd never see their son again, knew that it was they who'd driven him off. The last words he'd spoken to them were as clear as any explanatory letter— "Thank you, Mother, Father. I understand your concerns completely now." The raft was quite large—with the lean-to in its center, it looked almost like a tiny desert island. The lean-to was necessary, for out here on the ocean, the sunshine could become terribly strong, sending shimmering heatwaves dancing over the sea. The Skydancer stayed in the shade when the heat was at its worst, though he far preferred lounging out in the open, looking into the blue waters his pearl oysters grew in. Nacre still did not welcome company, though he'd learned to tolerate it over the years. His companion today was one of his clanmates, a mage and researcher named Qutaibah. "So after you left your parents' home, you came straight here?" "To the Sunbeam Ruins, yes. Not to your clan." The Skydancer's lavender eyes briefly darkened. "I drifted around a bit....I had to. There was, indeed, some wisdom to what my parents said." He chuckled dryly. "Many people were not so understanding of my secret, once it was revealed. Or to be precise, they did not take kindly to me revealing their secrets." "Why stay in the Ruins, then?" "Because I thought that here, I would find dragons who appreciated truth. After all, isn't that the way of the Light Flight?" His tail twitched idly, and the jewels wrapped around it jingled. "Mind you, had things turned out differently, I would’ve happily stayed at home. My family had built its reputation on being honest and trustworthy...but in the end, my parents failed to see the irony of concealing others' lies. They believed that that, somehow, made them more trustworthy." Qutaibah watched as he pulled a brace of oysters from the water. "You still regularly interact with clients....How do you deal with customers who lie about loving others?" "I don't." The oysters splashed back into the sea. Qutaibah shielded her notes with one wing. "But I thought you said—" "I didn't explain that well. I don't deal with them." Nacre's face was stern. "If they say they're buying a ring or some other bauble out of love for somebody, and I sense that to be untrue, I do pretty much the same thing I did as a child: I tell them I'm reluctant to work with customers who aren't sure what they want. It’s my business, after all—what I say goes. "But like those two arguing Tundras, many of them bluster. They tell me they know exactly what they want. So I, too, lie a little bit." He smiled faintly, tapped his pearlescent orb. "I tell them my senses are sharper than most, and that I can feel the uncertainty that even they can't detect. I drop a few hints: Maybe they need some time apart to think things over separately. Maybe they're overwhelmed by all the wares on display, and are proceeding too hastily. 'Perhaps this isn't right for you', I say, or 'This will need more time; you might want to give this matter more thought.' I drop all the hints I need to, and maybe, just maybe, they'll realize I wasn't talking about jewelry...." "Have you tried another...open confrontation, like you did before?" "A few times, yes. But there are still times it doesn't work. Some dragons have invested too much in the relationship to give up on it...even when they see there's nothing left for it to be built on. Then, too, why should my opinion matter to folks who are oh, so deeply in love? I'm just the jeweler, after all." Qutaibah nodded in understanding. As she put her notes away, she said, "Thank you for sharing your story with me. I was surprised to hear of another dragon whose sixth sense was related to love, but I hadn’t realized...That is, I understand it must have been very difficult..." "I appreciated the opportunity to clear the air. Life's a little more pleasant when people understand why I act the way I do." And then Nacre's expression changed subtly. He usually looked cool and aloof, so it took Qutaibah a moment to recognize his expression as one of curiosity. "Your Second Sight is related to love, too, is it not? Do you understand how it works?" "Not really," Qutaibah sighed. "Love's a mystery all on its own—I'm not sure we really needed magic to get thrown into the mix, but here we are. Perhaps someday there’ll be answers..." “We can hope so.” Nacre turned to head back into the lean-to. As Qutaibah prepared to fly back to shore, she heard him murmur, “Let us hope that we’ll be wise enough to see them.” ~ The End Note: This story was originally written for the Mistral Jamboree '22 Story Contest, for the category "Windy Words: Disguise". ----- PREV. Dragon | Contents • Characters A-M N-Z • Stories Pt. 5 | NEXT Dragon

The clan had dwelled in the Tangled Wood for generations, on the shore of the Tidelord's sea.

And as he grew older and the world grew more familiar, he began to see a pattern—

"Congratulations again on your upcoming marriage, sir. Please sign the receipt for your purchase...."

"Of course, of course! Nothing but the best for my mate-to-be, eh? After all, I really do love them."

The Wildclaw's face shone with a smile...but it was a smile that did not quite reach his eyes, and Nacre flinched back from the waves of coldness that rippled from him. He found himself worried for the Coatl who draped a wing around their mate, clearly unaware of the apathy blooming inside him.

And that Wildclaw wasn’t the only one who made Nacre feel uneasy. There were many others—

"I love her," a Ridgeback professed, reaching out to caress her beloved's mane.

"I love them...her...him...you..."

Declarations of love, every one of them false—and whenever those words were spoken, Nacre thought he could almost see the lie, a faint violet mist briefly clouding the dragons' faces.

Right?"

His parents, Skydancers both, exchanged puzzled glances.

And it has been years since the last incident; he's surely outgrown it by now."

Nacre agreed with his parents, albeit with reluctance.

We're so excited to spend the rest of our lives together..."

The cold rolled over Nacre like the shadow of a raincloud: slow but inevitable, sending chills over his scales.

We've organized the ceremony so carefully—"

"And we are very excited about it!" the other one said. Another wave of coldness rolled over Nacre: "They're both lying! They're fooling themselves...and each other! Why won't they...?"

"I don't know, I'm not sure I can work with customers who are, um, unsure about what they want." It was a useful phrase he'd learned from his parents. He drew himself up as he said it, even managed to make it sound solid and officious. But it didn't have the desired effect this time.

"We are certain. We were told you were the best jewelers in these parts..."

"Is anything wrong?" Nacre's father approached them, his face furrowed in concern.

"It's just...I don't think this is a good idea..."

"But we do want to work with you, young sir. The two of us discussed it, and our clans recommended you. We want this wedding to be perfect. We want nothing but the best for—"

"But you don't even love each other!" The words left Nacre's mouth in a wail. And then he slumped, utterly defeated, because his secret had come to light again.

His father's face darkened with anger. But he was completely eclipsed by the rage that now appeared on the Tundras' faces. They were angry too—not at Nacre, but at each other.

"I knew it," one of them hissed. "My siblings said that your proposal wasn’t worth—"

"My proposal?! You were the one throwing yourself at me—"

"You strung me along! What—you couldn't break it off civilly, you cowardly worm?!"

"I would've been able to, if you hadn't flaunted me like a trophy every chance you'd got!"

The two of them were glowering at each other now, fur bristling wildly, canines bared. Nacre felt his father pulling him towards the door. The older Skydancer was talking urgently to the workers clustered outside, telling them to bring the guards.

The couple—if they could even still be called that—was ejected before they could damage the wares or each other. As they were forcibly escorted away from the shop, they could be heard raging at each other, "This isn't over yet!"

"Famous last words," Nacre's father muttered dryly. And then he gave his son a stern look. "We'll have to discuss this later, too."

Nacre gulped and nodded.

"These are grown dragons, and they'll be able to deal with the consequences of their actions."

"But what about those who are being lied to? The ones who don't know that their relationships are shams?" Nacre was already misty-eyed with stress; he shook the tears away. "Are they supposed to deal with...to suffer just because they didn't know, not until it was too late?"

His father's face hardened. "As your mother said, their lives are their own affairs. Leave them to it. We only make the ornaments they desire, nothing more."

"But what should I do if—"

"You will do nothing, Nacre. Nothing beyond what you were trained to do. You will assist our customers, help them complete their purchases, and accept their payment. If they lie to others in their lives, it's none of our business. Our business, my boy, is this shop and our wares."

Nacre's scales grew cold again, though this time, it was not with the chill of a lie. It was with something worse: the steely frigidity of realization. He felt the calmness of it settle over him, his mane and wings smoothening.

"You mean you’re worried...because of the shop? About our work...our money?"

His parents nodded earnestly. "That's right. Our family built this place up from nothing. There used to be nothing here but a barren stretch of shoreline..."

"I've heard the clan history before. Thank you, Mother, Father." Nacre rose, nuzzled their cheeks gently. "I understand your concerns completely now."

They smiled at him in relief and bade him good night. The discussion, they felt, had been a good one and had gone exactly as they’d hoped. "To think that all he needed was a stern talking-to. He's such an obedient boy..."

But the next day, when they woke up, Nacre was gone.

The last words he'd spoken to them were as clear as any explanatory letter—

"Thank you, Mother, Father. I understand your concerns completely now."

bead-divider-big-100x12.pngbead-divider-big-100x12.pngbead-divider-big-100x12.pngbead-divider-big-100x12.pngbead-divider-big-100x12.png

The raft was quite large—with the lean-to in its center, it looked almost like a tiny desert island.

"So after you left your parents' home, you came straight here?"

"To the Sunbeam Ruins, yes. Not to your clan." The Skydancer's lavender eyes briefly darkened. "I drifted around a bit....I had to. There was, indeed, some wisdom to what my parents said." He chuckled dryly. "Many people were not so understanding of my secret, once it was revealed. Or to be precise, they did not take kindly to me revealing their secrets."

"Why stay in the Ruins, then?"

"Because I thought that here, I would find dragons who appreciated truth. They believed that that, somehow, made them more trustworthy."

Qutaibah watched as he pulled a brace of oysters from the water. "You still regularly interact with clients....How do you deal with customers who lie about loving others?"

"I don't." The oysters splashed back into the sea. Qutaibah shielded her notes with one wing. "But I thought you said—"

"I didn't explain that well.

'Perhaps this isn't right for you', I say, or 'This will need more time; you might want to give this matter more thought.' I drop all the hints I need to, and maybe, just maybe, they'll realize I wasn't talking about jewelry...."

"Have you tried another...open confrontation, like you did before?"

"A few times, yes. But there are still times it doesn't work. Some dragons have invested too much in the relationship to give up on it...even when they see there's nothing left for it to be built on. Then, too, why should my opinion matter to folks who are oh, so deeply in love? I'm just the jeweler, after all."

Qutaibah nodded in understanding. As she put her notes away, she said, "Thank you for sharing your story with me. I was surprised to hear of another dragon whose sixth sense was related to love, but I hadn’t realized...That is, I understand it must have been very difficult..."

"I appreciated the opportunity to clear the air. Life's a little more pleasant when people understand why I act the way I do." And then Nacre's expression changed subtly. He usually looked cool and aloof, so it took Qutaibah a moment to recognize his expression as one of curiosity.

"Your Second Sight is related to love, too, is it not? Do you understand how it works?"

"Not really," Qutaibah sighed. "Love's a mystery all on its own—I'm not sure we really needed magic to get thrown into the mix, but here we are. Perhaps someday there’ll be answers..."

“We can hope so.” Nacre turned to head back into the lean-to. As Qutaibah prepared to fly back to shore, she heard him murmur, “Let us hope that we’ll be wise enough to see them.”

It was as though the gods had been building the perfect lineage for her since the beginning of dragonkind. She was one of the most powerful dragons to ever walk Sornieth even before she was hatched. Her parents knew that, but they both had different plans for their wonderfully blessed daughter. Her father wanted to raise her to be a force for good. He wanted her to be kind and compassionate. Her mother wanted her to continually seek power and help her to hunt down child eaters. She wanted her daughter to be strong and unstoppable. Lucrecia's future and destiny were decided for her before she was even hatched. Lucrecia's parents were overjoyed when their daughter hatched. She was everything they could've hoped for and more. As a child, she was raised by both of her parents. Her mother helped her to make sense of all the magical abilities she had at her clawtips. Even as a hatchling, Lucrecia could command wind and air, teleport, and glamour herself. During training, she would often accidentally turn herself into air and get picked up in a particularly strong breeze. Her father taught her to sail ships and sing sea shanties. It often wasn't as productive as training with her mother, but it was certainly more fun. While training with her father, Lucrecia realized she also had siren-like powers. Not only could she entrance dragons with her glamours, but she could use her voice as well. The older Lucrecia got, the clearer she made it that she intended to continue learning from both her parents. She enjoyed poring over spellbooks with her mother as much as she enjoyed playing drinking games with her father. Living and learning from witches, spellcasters, pirates, and sailors helped Lucrecia to grow and mature into a very flexible, intelligent, and social dragon. She could often be seen rushing between sailing lessons and magic lessons with a pile of books and a gaggle of friends. She was most often seen smiling and enjoying herself. She grew to be kind, loving, passionate, and adventurous. Many expeditions on the sea with her father also made her fearless and a heavyweight drinker. Eventually, Lucrecia knew she had to leave home. She still had much to learn, but she was also quite adept at everything she did. She decided to begin her grand quest of adulthood by building herself a ship. Not just any ship, but a grand ship, capable of holding a massive crew and sailing Lucrecia all over Sornieth. Progress on her ship was rather slow going. She much preferred the night, some would even call her nocturnal, and worked better in the dark hours. She spent months living off of an hour or less of sleep each night. During the day she continued her studies and at night, she worked on her ship. The day finally arrived. Lucrecia finished building her boat. It was a thing of beauty. Lucrecia couldn't wait to take it out onto the water. She was finally leaving home. She named her boat the Peyton after one of her distant relatives. It felt right to honor one of the dragons who had been part of giving her such blessed powers. The Peyton was set to depart. Captain Lucrecia bade farewell to her friends and family and left the shores of the Windswept Plateau. She didn't know where she would go, but she knew the wind was with her. The wind and the sky were watching over her and they would keep her safe. Captain Lucrecia and her crew only sailed for a few weeks before they hit trouble. They were sailing along the southern shore of the Starfall Isles when they noticed smoke coming from a clan in the woods. Lucrecia was never one to let others suffer when she could help, so she dropped anchor and led her sailors to the troubled clan. Pirates were terrorizing the tiny clan. Lucrecia was raised right, so she made quick work of the pirates. The clan praised her and proclaimed her to be a hero. Lucrecia insisted that it was no big deal, but the clan wouldn't hear it. They treated the whole crew to a feast before letting them continue on their journey. Lucrecia threw the pirates into her brig and commandeered their ship. She began traveling south with the intention of bringing the criminals to one of the notorious prisons in the Southern Icefield. A few days into the journey, the captain of the pirates requested the audience of Lucrecia. Being a generous dragoness, she agreed and went down to the brig. The pirate began to talk about Lucrecia's lineage. She dismissed his talk. There was nothing about her lineage that she didn't already know. That is, until the pirate referred to Lucrecia as a 'glitch.' Lucrecia had never heard that term before; she wasn't sure what it meant. A scholar at heart, she pressed the pirate captain for information, demanding that he explain himself. He happily complied. He explained that Lucrecia was descended from a dragon named Naomi. A dragon who had reportedly briefly led all the exalted dragons. This Naomi dragon had become a legend of great proportions. Some claimed that she could phase in and out of existence, others claimed she could open portals anywhere in Sornieth. Lucrecia dismissed the captain's claims. There was no way she was a descendant of this dragon. She had never done anything so out of the ordinary. Or at least, she didn't think she had. Lucrecia endured many sleepless nights thinking about the pirate captain's words. Surely, if she was a descendant of this dragon, her parents would have told her. They were always so open about the rest of her lineage. She knew she was a witch, a siren, a mage, and so many more, but a glitch? Surely there was a mistake. The night before the Peyton was to dock and transfer her prisoners, Lucrecia met with the captain again. She asked if there was any way to prove or disprove descent from Naomi. The captain said there was nothing concrete, but rumor had it that some Arcane clans had ways to test it. Lucrecia left swiftly with plans of returning to the Starfall Isles to get answers. The prisoners and their boat were transferred to the Gaoler Keepers the following day. Captain Lucrecia sat sail back the way they had come. Mother Nature was against them. The wind blew in the opposite direction, but Lucrecia was stronger than nature. She easily overcame nature and forced The Peyton to go where she wanted it. The Arcane clans did have ways of proving bloodlines and they told Lucrecia exactly what she didn't want to hear. She really was one of these 'glitch' dragons. The clan she went to explained that she had mistaken one of her powerful abilities for a Wind ability when in reality, it was a mixture of Wind and Naomi. Lucrecia could phase through reality. She had thought it was aeroportation, but the clan explained to her that normal aeromancers couldn't teleport with as much speed as she could. Lucrecia wasn't sure what to do with this new information. She continued sailing, but became less sure of herself. Was she even supposed to be alive? Was she a colossal, universal mistake? A descendant of Naomi never should have as much power as she did. It would be catastrophic. It could be catastrophic. Could be. But it wouldn't be. Lucrecia was resolute. She would hold strong to her father's teachings and use all her power to help others. If the universe had made a mistake in letting her live, if she was to be a dragon who would tip the scales of good and evil, then she would tip them in the favor of good. In the end, Lucrecia became a mix of what both her parents wanted for her. As per her father's request, she helped others wherever she went. She was altruistic, kind, and compassionate. She could beat anyone in drinking games and could sail better than any pirate. As per her mother's request, she was a powerful witch and hunted down forces of evil, whether that came in the form of child-eaters, the Shade, or other dragons. She was driven, stubborn, and unyielding. Lucrecia became an immense force for good. She and her crew would never let Sornieth fall into the talons of evil. Lucrecia became notorious for her words before entering battle. All of her sailors felt inspired by her words. "The battle isn't over until I draw my last dying breath." ~ The End Credits: Special thanks to Reiyn for researching and writing this story! Never had a dragon been more blessed than Lucrecia.

That is, until the pirate referred to Lucrecia as a 'glitch.'

Lucrecia had never heard that term before; she wasn't sure what it meant.

"The battle isn't over until I draw my last dying breath."
