Chapter II: Pursuit
Today is the day the Ethereal Palace finally welcomes its maidens. I’m excited to see the kind of energy that this will bring to Miresa. Hopefully, this palace can ignite hope in the ones that have lost it along the way. I want Miresa to prosper, though it drains me every day I go on. The area around the palace has slowly amassed a small population, and buildings are continuously being built as Miresa continues to grow. It’s been a difficult transition for everybody, but I hope that this palace will finally bring us all together.

As the group walked towards the palace, Iri could feel the burning gazes of dozens of other maidens in the shopping district on her. Eurielle’s hand was still firmly grasping hers, though the group walked patiently down the stone path.
“Just what do you think you’re doing?” A voice yelled out from behind the group. The girls all looked back over their shoulders, except Eurielle, who looked at the palace right in front of them. She kept walking, and so the three younger maidens followed her hesitantly, turning away from the girl calling out to them.
“Eurielle, stop!” She did. She turned around.
The girls turned around with her, and saw the girl who had been calling out walk angrily towards them, her eyes fixated on Eurielle. She had light green eyes and long, bright green hair blowing behind her. The earthy outfit she was wearing, along with a special gardening sash draped across her torso indicated that she was a high-ranking maiden in the agriculture district of Valor.
Iri kept glancing between the girl approaching and Eurielle nervously, who had her brows furrowed and a stone-cold face. Seeing her like this made Iri wary of the person approaching. Iri tried to hold a similar face, though, ultimately, she was probably much less intimidating.
The girl stopped right in front of Eurielle, who had an obvious height difference on her. She looked up and held a finger towards Eurielle’s face. “You’re going to realize one day that you’re putting too much faith in the wrong people,” she said loudly. Iri noticed that other maidens in the shopping district that weren’t watching the group earlier, definitely were now. The girl’s initial yelling had caused all of the maidens in the area to grow quiet, and all of their gazes were held on them.
Eurielle looked down at the girl, and then her gaze flicked up at the maidens watching curiously all around them.
“Eurielle, what reason is good enough to be bringing in these three?”
Eurielle looked back down at her and sighed, closing her eyes and pinching the bridge of her nose in thought. The group stood there and waited. Angel was bouncing on her feet anxiously, and Raven seemed to be utterly dumbfounded by the whole situation going down in front of them. Iri kept her attention focused on Eurielle, who seemed to be struggling with the confrontation.
Finally, Eurielle opened her mouth, “If you would like to join us Euthalia, you are welcome to, but you are not in any position to be questioning me about this. If you have any discontentment about this, you can come with us and we can work together to figure things out. However, this—" She gestured to the crowd watching the four girls, “is not how we will be doing things.” Eurielle swung back around and started walking hastily to the palace again, as Euthalia stood there with a straight face, but her eyes showed a bit of fear in them. Iri’s thoughts clouded as she turned to follow Eurielle and the group.
With the group’s departure, Euthalia hesitated, but quickly found pace next to Iri, who was still at Eurielle’s side. Iri looked at the Ethereal Palace straight ahead of them. The palace took on the same theme as Valor’s, with striking oriental architecture – built with the white stone Miresa is known for, and dark oak log accenting with blue roof tiles. The same buzzing energy from before still sent a static chill up Iri’s arms.
As the group approached the gate to the palace, two guards stood at the entrance. They weren’t dressed like regular guards though, but were wearing armour that looked as though it was made specifically for each of them. As if…
“You’re Watchers! Oh my gosh, I’ve never actually talked to a Watcher before!” Angel exclaimed as she ran straight to the two assumed Watchers as they raised their eyebrows at her approach. Angel was admiring their armour and asking a million questions when Iri looked at Eurielle next to her and saw a soft smile on her face as she watched Angel’s interaction. Iri felt a sense of relief wash over her. It felt like the matriarch didn’t have enough of those kinds of smiles these days, or so it felt.
Eurielle and the group met next to Angel, and the Watchers turned their attention to her. Eurielle held out a hand, gesturing to the group, “I’ve invited them to have tea, I’ll escort them out when we’re done,” she said. The two Watchers nodded. Eurielle turned towards the group of young maidens and then turned her hand towards the Watchers. “These two are Sicily and Pluto. You’ll get acquainted with them another time, but these two are normally stationed at this palace so you’ll definitely be seeing them again soon.”
Both Pluto and Sicily waved as the group passed them, and Iri couldn’t help but feel excited passing the gate. Beyond this… was Eurielle’s home. It wasn’t often that Eurielle had guests, but Iri feels as though the palace has seen many maidens in its time walking through its grounds.
Iri took a breath as they stepped past the gate, and onto the bridge that leads straight to the palace’s entrance. She heard the gate creak and shut behind them, and Eurielle led the group. Her blue hair was waving in the wind, and the ocean waves hitting the cliffs below them could be heard much louder here than on the mainland.
As the group approached the opening to the palace, Euthalia stopped suddenly. She was looking down at the ground, her fists clenched at her sides. Her frustration was radiating from her, and the tension in the air grew thick. The group stopped and faced her, Eurielle said nothing.
“Why?” Euthalia said quietly. Iri looked at Eurielle, whose face softened at the sight of her friend’s frustration. Euthalia looked up, and her eyes were stern, her brows furrowed at Eurielle. “Why,” She said again. “Why would you go through all of this again after what happened the last time?” Euthalia yelled. Iri blinked at Eurielle, whose eyes flicked towards Iri, Raven and Angel and then back to Euthalia. She sighed and closed her eyes; her brows were upwards as if she didn’t want to deal with this right now. Iri felt her intuition was probably right.
“Euthalia, we need to prepare. We can’t keep sitting idle, waiting like sitting ducks. We need to figure this out, and end this once and for all. With that said, my first step with this new plan of mine…” She paused and turned towards the three young maidens.
Eurielle’s blue hair rippled in the wind. Her electric-blue eyes were buzzing with energy, and Iri’s face felt warm suddenly. Eurielle put on a light smile, and pointed to the girls.
“I’m going to turn you into Watchers.”

As it turns out, I started writing up the next few chapters because of your comment since I've been so inactive. I was debating on letting it collect dust forever, and
eventually try my hand at a comic for this instead, but I'm too busy to keep up drawing but
not too busy to write, so here we are again.
I'll add you to the pinglist, expect some new entries soon!
