Nobody really wanted to do much of anything that didn't absolutely need to be done at first. It really stood out to Felicity how different life was here by the edge of the Sea of a Thousand Currents than it had been on the outskirts of the market town in the Scarred Wasteland. Here, they were isolated from civilization, which meant there was very rarely anyone to trade with other than the occasional passing traveler or sailor. Most of the time, they were on their own to gather their own food. Thankfully, the natural environment here was a bit more abundant with life than the Scarred Wasteland had been. Everyone went to get seafood for Diego and Kessel at least once, and Diego hunted and foraged for plants for the others in return. Together, they quietly nursed their wounds and strengthened their bonds. At the nexus of those bonds stood the rapidly-growing hatchlings. All the adults, not just Felicity and Diego, treated them like their own children. As soon as Kessel and Mindor could speak and understand such an abstract concept as a map, Felicity unfurled the map of the world that she had helped make back in the Starfall Isles and showed it to them. She and Starbloom told the hatchlings about how they and their other best friend, Ember, had drawn this map long ago, and taught them that the goal of their clan was to follow the route marked on the map until it ended in the Ashfall Waste, where they would live someday. The two hatchlings gazed at the map, wide-eyed. Until that moment, they had had no idea that the world was larger than their cave, the beach, and the shallow waves that Mindor occasionally splashed in. After that, their games of pretend revolved around walking along the road they'd seen on the map, having wonderful adventures in distant lands and talking about what they would do when they finally got there. At the same time, a strong bond was forming between Belladonna and Rythorn. Everyone knew that the Light and Plague Flights had had a particularly dramatic struggle for dominance at one point, so it might have seemed unlikely to others that the two would even be friends, but the fact of the matter was that she had been raised in Arcane territory and he in Nature territory, so their loyalty to the flights whose elements they bore was somewhat tenuous. He was fascinated by the ability the alchemical arts granted to create more food than the alchemist had had to start with, albeit at the cost of a certain amount of taste and enjoyability. She explained that alchemy operated on a principle called "equivalent exchange." You wanted food? You had to sacrifice some of the food you had to get the type of reagent you needed. New clothes? You had to sacrifice some of your old ones. New familiar? You had to sacrifice at least a representative sample of an existing one. Bogsneak egg? Well, that took a little bit of everything, and more reagents and flasks than Clan Ashfeather had at the moment. Fortunately, there was an easier and more fun way to create more eggs. Belladonna was both excited and afraid to have laid only a single egg. She looked forward to raising a child of her own... assuming the hatchling survived long enough for her to raise it.

She decided to name her Brandywine, after the color of her wings. The clan's cooing over and admiration of their new little girl was interrupted by the cry of the Murkbottom Gull that had been Kamien's. Felicity and Diego hurried out to the seashore in pursuit of the calling gull - was it trying to alert them to danger? No - a visitor. It was Oranea, the Maren Wavesinger who was Captain Summerstone's familiar. "Felicity!" she called out to them. "Diego! It's good to see you again. Can you come to the ship? Captain Summerstone would like a word with you." "About what?" Felicity asked. "He has a favor to ask. Don't worry, it isn't about fighting." "All right." Felicity and Diego flew over to the ship, where Captain Summerstone was waiting for them. "Why did you want to see us again, Captain?" Felicity asked. "We ran across something we weren't expecting to find the other day," Captain Summerstone said. "Seabreem?" Seabreem, the first mate, came forward, carrying a canvas sling in his mouth. He laid the little bundle at Felicity's feet. It wriggled, and a little beige Snapper hatchling shook the fabric off her head. "We found this one stowed away in one of our cargo baskets," Seabreem explained, "with all of our ore and gemstones. We thought she was a boulder at first, but then she squeaked." He laughed. "We don't know where she came from, and no one we've traded with has laid claim to her, so we assume she hid in there on her own." "We've been taking care of her as best we can, but I'm afraid a ship is no place for an orphaned hatchling," Captain Summerstone added. "You have a lair fit for raising hatchlings in. We were wondering if you might be willing to adopt her." A smile spread across Felicity's face, but there was a tinge of sadness to it. Even though she was a Snapper, the beige hatchling reminded her a little of Kamien when he had just been hatched. "Yes," Felicity said. "Clan Ashfeather would be very happy to do that for you. Belladonna just had a daughter - we can raise them together." Felicity and Diego took the canvas sling, put the baby Snapper back in it, flew with it back to their lair, and told the others what had happened. Their clanmates were happy to welcome another hatchling. Since she had been hiding among gemstones, she was named Garnet.

One day, she asked her father about what was out there, and he told her to go and ask her mother. Her mother reluctantly told her about the last time she and Starbloom had traveled to the Water Flight's Coliseum, and how her son Kamien had been lost to them there. She said she didn't want her daughter to go back there anytime soon; she wanted her to enjoy life as much as possible, right where she was. I tried to draw Brandywine looking off to the horizon, but alas, figuring out how to draw a Spiral in an original pose was far, far beyond my abilities. Here's the part that I thought turned out well, her head. I drew her with Water eyes because she was hatched there according to the lore I'm writing.
