FURTHER NOTES . . . . |
A lot of this is thanks to Papermonkey. She posted about her Clan's lair - the Library Ruins - with a picture, and invited others to share their drawings and descriptions. This was the extremely sketchy first image I drew of the Spire, in January 2014, and it all grew from there.
xTERRITORY SIZE
In my head, it’s about 5Km from the Starwood Strand to the Focal Point where the Smugglers' Cove is located, with the Spire directly between the two – a smidge closer to the Star Wood.
I imagine that the territory itself is about 12 Km squared (5 square miles) though it’s not circular: it’s a very squashed oval, and favours the Starwood Strand side. Despite what my Profile page says about the location of my Lair, the Ancient Sanctum close to the Observatory is just an outpost, manned by a few dragons. Almost all of the Clan lives elsewhere.
This means that the vast, vast, vast majority of the Lundlaevungar territory is ocean and sky! (That was unintentional!) The actual land area of the territory is fairly small and quite spread out, and I like that.
For a quick real-world size comparison: Derwentwater in the Lake District is very roughly 5 miles long and 2 miles wide and is, just about, the size and shape of the Lundlaevungar territory. (Basically, on a clear day you can see across the water from Smuggers' Cove to the Cliff Tunnels with the naked eye and the Spire would be visible in between.)
xMONTHS AND YEARS
In my Lore, Sornieth years are named based on the Festival Familiar that year. Each Sornieth year technically begins at the start of the Month of Sunbeam (June), but the New Year is officially celebrated during the Brightshine Jubilee at the end of the month.
Sornieth Year Names:
..... |
1. Year of the Sprite 2. Year of the Bear 3. Year of the Acolyte 4. Year of the Goblin 5. Year of the Spirit | ______________ |
6. Year of the Ambassador 7. Year of the Guardian 8. Year of the Sign 9. Year of the Statue 10. Year of the Slink |
Months run from Festival to Festival. It's probably best to describe it with an example: the Month of Starlight runs from the day after the Flameforger's Festival to the final day of the Starfall Celebration, roughly corresponding to September. Each month therefore builds up to its Deity's corresponding Festival.
Guide to Sornieth Month Names:
..... |
June July August September October November | . |
Month of the Sunbeam Month of the Tempest Month of the Smith's Hammer Month of Starlight Month of Contagion Month of the Stonewatch | ____ |
December January February March April May | . |
Month of the Dragon's Rest Month of Hoarfrost Month of the Umbral Flow Month of Skysong Month of the Whirlpool Month of Germination |
Hatch signs are dated/timed to correspond with waxing/waning elemental power as the Festivals come and go. The signs are at their strongest during the corresponding deity's Festival.

xDRAGON SIZE
I ignore 'canon' dragon sizes. The dragons in my Lair are all roughly the same size. Fae are still small, and Imperials are still huge, but not to the degree that the site suggests.
Think of a Chihuahua next to a Great Dane; that's the relative Fae:Imperial scale among my dragons.
xSPELLING
I sometimes use the Þ/þ (Thorn) and Ð/ð (Eth) characters in dragon names. These are letters used in Old Norse (and in modern Icelandic!), and as my Lair has a loose Old Norse theme, I sometimes use these letters, even if I can't use them officially in names on FR.
Pronunciation Guide:
Þ/þ = th as in think
Ð/ð = th as in that
Þ/þ = th as in think
Ð/ð = th as in that
xACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND INSPIRATIONS:
Hatch Signs Lore by usbdongle.
Original has gone, here's a working reblog.
This is amazing! One of my favourite bits of generic Lore and I have taken (huge) inspiration from it. I've directly borrowed the names of months and Hatch Signs (which are perfect). My version is modified from the original, mainly in terms of timings, but I could not have come up with it alone. Check out the link for lots more detail on Hatch Signs!
