The Nocturne dips their head before soaring up, disappearing into the foliage. Atheria waves a wing, gesturing you towards the depths of the Gladeveins. You blink, and suddenly the Skydancer is gone. You have already passed the Clan's border, marked by a line of thick-petaled blue flowers which stretched out on either direction. Their sweet scent still lingers in the air around you. Periodically hung wooden planks with runes etched into them with black and green ink, welcoming visitors to the territory - and simultaneously threatening intruders from attacking. You hum, slightly nervous, and have to remind yourself that you were [i]invited[/i] within these lands. You are here as a visitor. As if to prove it to anyone who is spying on you - and you know that Zana is around, somewhere - you clutch the token Atheria gave you close to your chest. Despite this nervousness, you are able to take in the beauty of your surroundings. It is breath-taking. Trotting at a pleasurable pace, you pass by a large grouping of sunning stones on the edge of a stream. Past the stream you spot a large, over-flowing garden being tended to by a brown-and-green Pearlcatcher. She looks busy, and so you do not think to greet her. Deciding to follow the stream, you turn west by south-west and continue on your way. At several points, the stream you're following crosses paths with others - it is here where you can see the ingenuity of the dragons who call the Gladeveins 'home'. Natural bridges are constructed from fallen trees and carved with delicate claws and intricate designs; stepping stones are placed thoughtfully for dragons who cannot - or will not - fly.[/indent][/columns] [columns][left] Cascading waterfalls are guided by dragon-made cliffs, with a lacework of small islands brightened with flowers and ferns formed among the streams. The sunlight falls through this land in streaks, warming the air despite the dappled light. Silken flags hang from the trees above, signalling no more than a celebration of life. You're almost positive you've lost track of the original stream you were following. But there is no longer hesitation in your stride. You've adopted a new stream to follow, this one separating from the others and making its way towards a large structure. Something tells you that this is the Clan's lair. It is built beneath, into and around a great Willow tree. Although the tree's long tendrils reach the ground, dipping into the stream that skirts around the trunk, and effectively sheltering the lair hidden from sight, you can hear the dragons who live here. Their laughter, their chatter, their very voices blend in with the happy gurgling of the Gladeveins. There is a large pool of water to your right, where a few Tundras are gathered, and you can see a small shallow pool further ahead. The branches of the Willow ripple slightly in the breeze and you move to pass beneath the soft tendrils, still clutching your token in your claws. A few glance at you with curiousity in their gaze, but they say nothing. At the base of the Willow, among its roots, sits a clear, carved gemstone with many facets. Dappled sunlight plays on its surface, with sparks of colour shattering in its shadow. Above, in the tree branches, sits a aqua-and-soil Fae watching her Clan with big Nature eyes. She gives you a nod, her fins flaring, but does not move otherwise. You keep moving. [/columns] [columns] You see a small path in the ferns to your right, and decide to explore there first. You move silently, as the sounds from the lair behind you fade - some inner sense tells you that this is the space of a dragon who appreciates quiet. And you are right: Rounding the corner you see the empty office of the archivist, Neva. There are deep nooks in the trunk of a tree, where books and files are organized carefully. The mossy rock beside the tree also has shelves carved into it. Before you can take in much else, a tiny claw on your shoulder startles you. You turn and see the bright eyes of Zana, the Nocturne who was watching you from the start. They smile and shake their head slightly. You understand - nobody is allowed here without the archivist present. You nod and shuffle backwards, leaving the space. [/columns] [columns] You look at Zana, wondering where you [i]are[/i] allowed to go. They chuckle and point south, down the path towards a cozy-looking area behind the Willow. Before you can thank the Nocturne, they have already disappeared again. Shaking your head in wonder, you make your way down the path lined with stones. There is an image of a crystalline Tundra painted across the largest rock. The dragon is smiling kindly, her head tilted towards the viewer. You feel a sense of calm wash over you... Suddenly, you are accosted by a harsh voice behind you. It is a Mirror with stars and runes caught in her scales. Her eyes are narrowed and her stance is aggressive. "Why are you here at the nesting grounds? You're not here to have your hatchlings,[i] are[/i] you, since I certainly did not invite you here." "Oh, by the eleven, no," you say, startled and a little scandalized. "I'm just visiting." "Hmm. Well, however true that may be..." The Mirror pauses, eyeing you carefully. She visibly relaxes after deciding you aren't a threat. "Ah, you have a token. I suppose Atheria knows what she's doing, then. This clearing here is where our Clanmates perform the rituals necessary to gain favour from the Gladekeeper and earn their eggs." There is an altar carved from a tree stump with vines clinging all along its side. Opposite the altar lies a rocky shelving unit that holds various leaves, flowers, seeds - all supplies for the mating ritual and prayer to the Gladekeeper. There's incense burning just past the altar, giving the air a sweet, sultry scent. Nests for incubating eggs lie further past, half-hidden by some ferns. But there were no hatchlings in sight. You realize there is a separate alcove to keep the young ones safe and protected once they've hatched. "The hatchlings are taking their nap, and we wouldn't want to disturb them now. I just got them all to settle down." She steps forward and sniffs at you with all four eyes narrowed. You don't move, waiting for her to finish. The Mirror gives you a meaningful look, before she moves off. You continue on your way, only then realizing you never caught the caregiver's name. Squinting, you make a note to ask about her later on - maybe there will be a friendlier dragon to help you. You've almost completed a circuit around the Willow. You glance up curiously. There are many nests made up in the trees, as well as a few gaping holes in the bark - you presume this leads to an inner network of chambers and tunnels within the tree trunk itself. Zana is not around, but you know they will probably tell you the same thing about Neva's den. Despite the token in your claws, it seems there is still only so many places you are free to explore. Before you return to the main clearing, you glance over your shoulder and see two paths shooting off from the main walkway. One is guarded by a black-and-jade Skydancer with piercing eyes; the other seems empty, but the path narrows with thick brambles on either side. They both look private, too. You pause, wondering if you should try to follow the path, before you shake the thought from your mind. These dragons seem friendly, but if trouble were to arise, you are greatly outnumbered. And you know that Nature dragons, gentle though they might be, are capable of vicious, brutal things - anything to survive. Without further ado, you find yourself back in the main clearing. There is a [url=http://flightrising.com/main.php?dragon=17461045]tea shop[/url], a small cozy-looking hut to the left of the main clearing that catches your eye, but it appears to be closed at the moment. You glance up to where you had seen the leader earlier. She is now gone from the branch, but when you turn your attention back to the streams outside the Willow, you see an violet-and-ivory dragoness waiting for you there, her wings flared. "It is just past noon now. You still have time to explore before your visit is over. Please let us know if anything comes up - as always, Zana will be with you." The Fae leans forward, blinking twice, her fins rippling. "And may you go with clarity."[/columns][columns] Sonata flies away before you can say much else besides a quick, "Thank-you". You begin to wonder what to do now, when your stomach grumbles loudly. This gains the attention of a nearby Imperial with many lights dangling from and twinkling in his pelt. "You must be our latest visitor!" he rumbles. "And absolutely famished. I am Molson. Come with me to my inn, we can get you something to eat." It is here where you overhear several dragons, including a crackled white-and-purple Tundra whom you saw earlier on your visit. The dragon, Cascade, is telling a story, and you settle in closer to hear the tale. Molson and his mate, Erina, are nearby and listening with interest as well. Molson keeps one eye on the door, to ensure that any newcomers to his inn are cared for; Erina plays idly with a few pieces of seaglass, but her attention is on Cascade. As the story goes on, you realize that everyone here has already heard this story before. It is a familiar epic, one that is close to home for them all - for it is the story of the founding of their Clan, their home. Your plate of food lies half-forgotten as you listen. Every so often you seem to remember your hunger and stuff a clawful of baked nuts and crisp insects in your mouth, trying to chew quietly. Embarrassment floods you as you realize that your chewing is in fact quite loud, drowning out the story. From there, you move to the salad of fresh greens - a much quieter food, to be sure. Before the story's end, you've eaten your fill and lean back with a clear glass of sweet nectar harvested by the Clan's bees. And although the juice is quite delicious, the food savoury, your attention is clearly fastened on the storyteller. [/indent] [/columns] [columns] The story begins, they say, with a song, a star and a seed. These three were separated by quite some time, but the Clan would never have existed if not for their effects upon our cast. [/columns] [columns] [indent][i]Sonata, the Song[/i][/indent] Sonata was born into a Nature Clan long ago, so long ago that Sonata claims she does not remember its name, nor even the names of her parents. If she is telling the truth, well, who knows at this point. The matter remains that our founder and matriarch comes with a blurred past. Some of that is her own doing, as well. [nextcol] [img]http://flightrising.com/rendern/avatars/121540/12153951.png[/img][/columns] [columns] Nevertheless, although the details are unclear, the bottom line remains: Sonata was not trusted in her birth Clan due to what some call a gift, and what she calls a curse. It is the talent of musical magic that lives within her. Despite her Fae nature, her singing voice is remarkably emotive and powerful enough to bring a warrior like Ashlesha to his knees, sobbing for those he's killed long ago. Whether that is because she draws up something within the listener as music is wont to do, or because of a more sinister reason . . . Well, that is for you to decide. Please keep in mind that on most days in the Clan, Sonata will not sing. Even when Melody lived with us - may she rest in peace with the Gladekeeper - Sonata would listen with sadness in her eyes as her friend sang. But Sonata would rarely join herself, for a reason she kept to herself. With the most recent Hypnos Scandal, it is hard to see the truth here. Sonata insists that her music is not hypnotic, that she never meant to harm anyone with her singing. But her birth Clan did not believe her then, and a few in our Clan continue to distrust her now. She fled her Clan, and lived alone for quite some time. The Clarus Clan would not have existed if Sonata was welcome in her own Clan, if she never felt the need to create a safe haven for the misfits and bullied, like herself. For years, she lived on her own in the Viridian Labyrinth, carving out a small territory for herself. That lasted only so long, for the nearby Centaur band was looking to expand their territory, and they made quick work of Sonata's border before chasing her away. This was the second time she had lost her home, and she had not aged even a quarter of a century. She had had enough. Sonata was pacing the skies, trying to come up with a solution, when she saw a vibrant purple Mirror soar through the skies nearby - too nearby. He was so invested in the heavens above, with narrowed eyes and murmured words, that he did not see the tiny Fae until it was too late. They crashed into each other, and that was how Sonata met her first friend. [/columns] [columns] [indent][i]Dusk, the Star[/i][/indent] Not many know this, but Dusk was born a Mirror. Clearly he never quite felt comfortable in this body. His four eyes were great for seeing everything around him but what he wanted to see - the stars above. He had always been drawn to the sky, the constellations, the secrets written above. It was killing him that he could not connect to what he loved most. Not to mention, he wasn't able to fly well enough in this body to reach the stars.[nextcol] [img]http://flightrising.com/rendern/avatars/121540/12153952.png[/img][/columns] [columns] He had left his Mirror pack as soon as he was old enough to travel on his own - being around his pack gave him a headache. There was only so much small talk he could make with his family before he was exhausted. He never wanted to join the hunt, and was often left behind in their den. He didn't fit in. He knew it, everyone knew it, and dragging it on was becoming unbearable. He left without ceremony, and worked on his stargazing. This was the moment he met Sonata. The two tumbled from the skies, legs and wings entwined. They were able to catch themselves before causing too much damage. "Oof! Watch where you're going, mirror!" Fae said, her wings straight and stiff. If she could snap in irritation, she would have, but as always her voice was simple and straight, monotone. "Sorry," the Mirror said, shuffling his feet hesitantly. The Fae noticed this, and she tilted her head. "Are you alright?" The Mirror shrugged, not saying a word. With a sigh, Sonata re-positioned herself by the other dragon's side. She recognized his distress - it was hers, too. "My name is Sonata," she said, trying now to be more courteous. More friendly. Her fins opened wide in display. "Dusk," he said, finally turning to meet her gaze. He offered a flimsy smile, and the Fae gave a small, odd-sounding giggle. From there, the two became inseparable. They shared their secrets, and promised to find a better home for themselves. For anyone else who wanted to join, too. "Our first task," Sonata said after a moment's silence one day, when the two were lying by the riverside, "is to get you settled." Dusk gave her a questioning look. "In your new body, of course. There must be a spell, a way to change your breed . . ." They set their minds to the task, and within the year had written up a breed-changing scroll with the help of Arcane magic and a nearby forest witch. When all was said and done, Dusk emerged in his new body, comfortable at last. A Tundra. The loss of his Mirror hunting sight allowed him to turn to the stars with a fresh gaze. The only downside emerged later, when Dusk took a deep inhale of Sonata, of their den together. The scent of his friend imprinted in his mind - and he realized with a small gasp that his family was gone. His birth Clan, his Mirror pack. It was harder for his Tundra mind to draw up images of who they were, of their names, faces and most importantly, their scents. The loss was a blow; even though he knew he didn't belong, they were still his family. And now they were gone. Sonata saw her friend struck with grief, and she did not know what to say. All she could offer was a soft lullaby, soothing him to sleep that night. Dusk's pain faded the next morning, and soon his birth Clan faded from his mind altogether. Ashlesha was born into a nearby Nature Clan, who has since fallen victim to the Silencing. Had Ash known this when he had left, he would have said a fonder farewell to his parents. According to the stories told, this was also the moment he met Sonata and Dusk, who was playfully splashing in the stream. At the moment, Ashlesha could only focus on his new purpose on life. It was only later, after Ash carefully planted the seed and stood guard over the young thing, that he properly introduced himself to the two dragons. That night, they lay close by around a fire, snacking on dandelions and idly chatting. Suddenly, Sonata sat up straight. The bonfire glowed in her eyes and her slight figure cast a long shadow. "This. This is where our home will be." It was not a question, nor a suggestion. The statement was firm, her mind made up. The two males made eye contact before turning their attention to her, curiously. "Look at the seed - it is already several weeks grown. You planted it only this afternoon." She paused, holding her breath. "You know what this means. It will be fully-grown in less than a year. As your Charge, Ashlesha, it grows faster. It will be the perfect shelter! The perfect home. Dusk, we've been talking about this - about settling down, creating a lair, starting a Clan." Ashlesha frowned. It was true that he would not move away from where his Charge was planted. This was going to be his new home, no matter what. Would these two others join him? Was that what he wanted? Dusk caught Ashlesha's eye. The Tundra sniffed the air, before leaning forward. "What do you think, Ashlesha?" Silence fell momentarily. It seemed the entire night was waiting to hear the response - even the fire stopped flickering while the decision hung in the air. Finally, Ashlesha leaned forward to bump noses with Dusk, with Sonata. "Yes. I would like that." And so, the Clarus Clan was founded. Your brow wrinkles in bemusement, and curiousity. Almost tripping over some roots in your eagerness, you push your way closer to the tree. You have to brush some wispy willow tendrils aside in order to gain a clearer vision. Here, attached to the rough surface of the trunk, are a collection of images. They are all framed, a variety of bright painted colours or glossy black material, or in plain wood. Some of the artwork is painted in oils, others sketched in charcoal, and others are so life-like it is almost as if a dragon managed to capture a snapshot of the moment, the details so fine they could not have been created by dragonclaw. It is some sort of craft you hadn't seen before. Magic, perhaps. You reach forward and lightly bring a claw to touch the artwork, your gaze flickering from one piece to the next. Each style seemed so different, and yet they all reflected the same thing. Average, day-to-day moments in the life of the Clarus Clan.
