TOPIC | Tempest Clan: Lore Help?
1 2 3 4 5
I'm slowly (oh so slowly) writing my clan's lore, and I'd love to have some help/reviews with how it's coming along!

Do I need to change my writing style?
Is the linking system working for tying characters together through each other's bio?
Are the stories dull or too cliche?
New direction to take?
Any help would be great appreciated, and I'll post the others here as they get done. Thank you in advance! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Written so Far: At some point I stopped updating this list, but feel free to browse the clan hierarchy below and click in their icons as I slowly update their bios [rule] Tempest I'm slowly (oh so slowly) writing my clan's lore, and I'd love to have some help/reviews with how it's coming along!

 • Do I need to change my writing style?
 • Is the linking system working for tying characters together through each other's bio?
 • Are the stories dull or too cliche?
 • New direction to take?

Any help would be great appreciated, and I'll post the others here as they get done.

Thank you in advance!

At some point I stopped updating this list, but feel free to browse the clan hierarchy below and click in their icons as I slowly update their bios

Determined to stake his claim and take back his mate and clan, Kyle was unprepared by the support his adversary received. The clan was Cassandra’s life, and she would do anything to see it thrive. Kyle had no such qualms – he cared little for the strangers around him, but he loathed the idea of hurting the only mate he ever had. What he proposed was unusual – and shocking to the council – but to keep his mate, Kyle was willing to share her with the other male. The arrangement worked, and the clan saw a new era of prosperity like never before under the rule of the trio. While matters of succession are still confusing at best, the three have fallen into a system that works well for all. Kyle and Cassandra are the official rulers of the clan, and the ones to represent it on all diplomatic dealings. Without a real claim to the throne, Agamemnon manages matters in their absence and deals with internal affairs since, while not recognized as a member of royalty, the member has earned the respect of his peers – and the title of Commander when dealing with official matters, as the royal court is as confusing nowadays as any succession lines. Cassandra
Queen of the Lair
Born of the Gods

God Born

While the whole of Sornieth is governed by the eleven main deities, the True Gods, each clan is guided by its own minor god - which in turn serve one of the True Gods.

When a minor god comes to be, they are followed by the birth of a Godborn dragon. Those singular beings know no parents, neither have they known infancy like most hatchlings. Dragons born of the gods spring into being fully formed, and ready to create a new clan for themselves.
While the godnborn can often hear the voice of their patron god for a while as they seek guidance in founding their clan, as time goes by and the clan prospers others might begin to hear the voice of their patron deity. Those chosen ones go to be high priests, interpreters for the gods that decide matters in the clan.

However, even if no longer a direct servant of their patron deity, a godborn dragon is considered the legitimate and indisputable leader of the clan. To depose a godborn is to challenge the favor of the gods.
While there are tales of lairs that have prospered under the leadership of foreign dragons, many a clan has been abandoned and led to ruin without a ruler.

Rightful Ruler

Cassandra was the first dragon of her clan, and together with her now exalted mate she struggled to create a safe place where her subjects could prosper.

Starting out her life as a Guardian, she trained as a fighter in order to protect her clan against intruders and gather treasure from the beastclans that were constantly at war with them. Back at the beginning her clan owed fealty to the Flamecaller, and times were though.
After almost an year of constant struggles and after many a dragon leaving to serve the Flamecaller rather than face the constant fight for survival, Cassandra defected and moved with her clan to foreign lands.

Under the guidance of her patron deity and the Icewarden, the clan finally prospered. There was treasure to keep them all fed, and as the clan expanded many exotic dragons came in, bringing their trades and riches with them.
But it was not without a cost. The price for their freedom was her mate, that to this day serves the Icewarden.

As the sole leader of the clan and guided by a patron that heavily favored the females of most species, the clan became a matriarchal society.
Most females were chosen, and then acceptable mates were procured for them. Mated pairs were chosen by their patron to breed the strongest bloodlines and the ones most valorous for other clans – for while many freely left to fight for and worship their gods, many others left to join different clans. For the loss of a valuable member the original clan would demand that a sum of gold or valuables be given in exchange for the loss of their member’s services. So in strengthening their bloodlines, the clan prospered in sending their offspring far and wide to serve among new clans.

After the loss of her mate, Cassandra refused to have another as her equal in ruling. She took consorts, and while she may indulge Agamemnon, her current one, she is the sole ruler, and the one to finalize all decisions within the clan.

As the clan prospered Cassandra used her ever growing riches to buy magic scrolls capable of modifying one’s nature.
Now a Skydancer, she retained part of her strength from her guardian days, evident in her impressive size – she is bigger than all but the imperials in her clan. And despite being queen, Cassandra prides herself in leading all attacks and excursions to gather treasure for her clan.
She is the leader of her female pack of warriors, though there have been rumors that a male might have been training in secret, despite her orders.

A Hard, Shiny Surface

After transitioning to a Skydancer Cassandra became extremely vain about her appearance. She enjoys things of beauty, and surrounds herself with treasure and dragons that reflect to her the wealth and prosperity of her clan.

Despite her cold and vain attitude towards others, she is deeply concerned about her clan and constantly strives to improve on their lair. She struggled for long to create a place where others might feel safe and might thrive, and she’ll do anything to keep it.

After seeing many friends being driven to servitude to the gods she is wary of their favors, and has a hidden, deep dislike towards the priests for their part in executing orders even she can’t circumvent.

Exalted Returned

Being sent to serve the gods as an exalted dragon is a high honor among most clans, but all dragons know that, once made, the decision to serve one’s gods is permanent and irrevocable.

That is, with a few exceptions.
As the years went by, more and more of the Godborn left their clans to serve the gods. Famine, a small territory, instable politics or simply a whim of the gods led thousands to abandon the only home they ever knew to fight for the deities that had birthed them.
However, those left behind were left bereft, unsettled and without a ruler.

The chaos that ensued led the gods, after much deliberation, to allow for the return of the exalted ones. Only the Godborn would be allowed to return to their homes, and only once would such mercy be granted.

Kings

The clan was in an uproar at the king’s return. While few remembered the days when both Kyle and Cassandra were in power, many of the clan’s dragons, who came to the clan after the king’s exaltation, were loyal to Agamemnon.

At first nothing more than a figure to appease the council and with no sway or social standing, the royal consort has risen through the ranks to be a respected leader and warrior.
Often being called to rule when the queen was away, the male was regarded highly by the clan, and the clan was torn in a battle of loyalties between the legitimate king and the one they followed by choice.

Even more torn was Cassandra herself. While the queen had adamantly refused to have another mate after Kyle left, the years mourning his loss didn’t erase the fact that the clan needed its leaders, and so to keep the power dynamics stable and the council appeased Cassandra conceded to take a consort.
No one but Kyle would be king of the clan they had started together, and the title would go to no other after his passing.

Years passed, and the young skydancer proved himself loyal as well as reliable. With time the queen grew to depend on him as much as she allowed herself to, and her companion was content to support her and rule from the sidelines, never stepping in as king, but holding power of his own nonetheless. When Kyle suddenly came back it left hanging the question of who would be the rightful king, and whether Agamemnon would be even allowed to stay in the clan, once his usefulness had come and gone.
With a broken heart Cassandra accepted the fact that, regardless of the gods’ decision, she would lose one mate at the cost of another.

Determined to stake his claim and take back his mate and clan, Kyle was unprepared by the support his adversary received. Agamemnon seemed truly appreciated by the council as well as the other clan members. Worse, he seemed to have won over the queen as well as his peers in the decades that the king was gone.

Though there is the pretext of negotiating a “fair payment for services lost”, he knew the auction house was one step above a slave market. Hatchlings got sold along with tamed beasts, bartered for gems or wares. Some got lucky and found good clans that treasured them. Most ended up being sent to serve their deities as exalted dragons. In the weeks following him being left in the care of his clan’s merchant, Agamemnon entertained himself by climbing as high as he could on the market stalls’ rooftops and watching as dragons from all over strolled by, browsing and haggling for wares in a flurry of activity. Maybe because of his constant wanderings he never caught the eye of any clans. It was only too late that he realized that he had missed his window of opportunity. Fully grown, it cost the clan too much to keep him there, and he was set to be sent to serve Windsinger in his battle for dominance. Agamemnon didn’t particularly care about his fate. He yearned to see the world, and even fighting for a god would be preferable than spending his life at that market watching the others go by. But as he was getting ready to leave, the clan merchant was approached by two females. The two skydancers had the bearing of royalty, or at the very least of those used to having their orders obeyed. Agamemnon has always despised their kind, those that came to the market and carelessly chose hatchlings like they did their baubles. As soon as he turned his back on them he felt a light tap on his shoulder. The dark skydancer stared unseeing at him, the gold pattern on her body glowing as her face remained hidden behind her mask. She nodded at the other one, and after treasure was exchanged Agamemnon found himself being escorted back to their clan, deep into the Ice mountains. It was a weird sight. The place was filled with dragons everywhere. Coatls and nocturnes emerged from pockets within the mountain, and as they entered the main chamber the place was already crowded with skydancers and imperials, which he assumed acted as bodyguards for the leader. He looked around him, expecting to see the leader among the imposing figures before him. Surely the two that escorted him were underlings, although clearly they had the respect of the others. As he halted in the middle of the room he felt one of the females brush past him and perch atop a throne like ice formation. Agamemnon stared in awe at the queen, the silent one he had pegged as the seer’s bodyguard. Things got no easier as the dark skydancer – Nightfall, the clan’s high priestess, he’d later learn – announced to all that he’d be their queen’s new mate. No matter what he had expected, suddenly rising to royalty was most definitely not in his plans. Sworn to The Sword Say what you want about it, being royalty sucked. As the shock wore off, Agamemnon slowly got used to life in his new clan. His mate, Cassandra, would delegate tasks and decide any pressing matters the others brought to her. As for himself… he had no idea. Not only didn’t he have a role, most of the clan seemed under strict orders not to give him one. The merchants and artisans wouldn’t accept his help, males weren’t allowed to hunt, and overall his sole purpose seemed to be as an amusement to the queen. Agamemnon was really getting antsy. In the clan females did most of the fighting. Though males were welcome to help in crafting goods and in other areas, fighting was strictly reserved to their mates. The only time males were trained to fight was during dominance pushes, when the deities would demand soldiers. During such times there were no rules, only a pressing desperation to send as many warriors as possible. Born to a warrior clan, Agamemnon felt drawn to the art of combat, and started seeking out a way to learn by himself. Unfortunately, the enemies just refused to cooperate. His assigned familiar, a – very small – giant locust was essentially useless in combat, and with no experience and equipment, the weakest enemy turned into a mighty foe. Worse yet, Agamemnon was careful to hide any evidence of his nightly activities from the queen. As much as she might have warmed up to him, Cassandra deeply disliked when her orders were disobeyed. Opportunity presented itself in the form of Adage, recently promoted to trainer and in charge of getting new dragons into fighting shape for the Icewarden. She might fear the queen, but she feared the possibility of the queen’s mate dying even more if left to fend for himself. So reluctantly she agreed to train him to fight. Training sessions would happen late at night when most clan members were asleep, and always where others wouldn’t see them. Fighting is still challenging, but Agamemnon is proud of how far he has come. He only hopes that when she finds out, that his mate may choose to fight by his side. As formidable as she is, it would do his queen good to have someone at her back for once. Warrior Once his training was complete, Agamemnon had no qualms about going on incursions into beastclan territory by himself. More reckless with each passing day, the royal consort fought fiercely, his frustration at the rigid rules imposed on him making him a savage fighter. Rumors of the berserk warrior spread across the neighboring Beastclans, finally reaching the queen during her fighting expeditions with her warriors. Incensed at having her orders challenged, Cassandra faced Agamemnon in battle herself, intent on proving to her mate that he was way over his head, and hoping that he would drop such childish aspirations and accept his role in the clan. She was not, however, prepared for the skill born out of nights of training and hundreds of perilous battles where he could rely on no one but himself. Defeated and impressed, the proud queen had no choice but to back down and acknowledge Agamemnon as a worthy fighter of the clan. Not only that, but the longtime ban that kept males from fighting was lifted as well, leading to the arrival of many able soldiers to strengthen the clan and train the new hatchlings to come. Donning armor befitting his new station, Agamemnon not only attained the status of a warrior, but also the respect of his clanmates. Although clan rules keep him from ever raising to the title of king, the male rules alongside Cassandra as effectively as one, standing beside her both on the battlefield as well as out of it. Agamemnon
Royal Consort
Commander

A Regal Rebirth

Born to a warrior clan, Agamemnon was sent to the auction house at an early age.

Sworn to The Sword

Say what you want about it, being royalty sucked.

As the shock wore off, Agamemnon slowly got used to life in his new clan. His mate, Cassandra, would delegate tasks and decide any pressing matters the others brought to her. Nightfall, the high priestess, would interpret for the gods and for their patron deity – something Agamemnon wasn’t used to and still found odd – and relay their orders and wishes.

Warrior

Once his training was complete, Agamemnon had no qualms about going on incursions into beastclan territory by himself.

Deposed

The clan was in an uproar at the king’s return. While few remembered the days when both Kyle and Cassandra were in power, many of the clan’s dragons, who came to the clan after the king’s exaltation, were loyal to Agamemnon.

At first nothing more than a figure to appease the council and with no sway or social standing, the royal consort has risen through the ranks to be a respected leader and warrior.
Often being called to rule when the queen was away, the male was regarded highly by the clan, and the clan was torn in a battle of loyalties between the legitimate king and the one they followed by choice.

When the king suddenly came back it left hanging the question of who would be the rightful ruler, and whether Agamemnon would be even allowed to stay in the clan, once his usefulness had come and gone.
With a broken heart Cassandra accepted the fact that, regardless of the gods’ decision, she would lose one mate at the cost of another.

Unlikely Alliance

Determined to stake his claim and take back his mate and clan, Kyle was unprepared by the support his adversary received. Agamemnon seemed truly appreciated by the council as well as the other clan members. Worse, he seemed to have won over the queen as well as his peers in the decades that the king was gone.

Commander

Daybreak
High Priest
The light in her darkness

Trickster

Born to the clan, Daybreak was from birth a mischevious and playful dragon who delighted in outsmarting his peers.

So naturally when the silent and serious Nightfall joined the clan he was eager to have a new playmate to wreck havoc with. However, the small female wasn’t very interested in his games, though in time they formed an unlikely friendship.
Daybreak’s playfulness seemed to lighten her usually somber mood, and she enjoyed to listen to his grand tales of adventures yet to come and all that he’d see when he set out for a new clan.

Divine Ruling

But an adventurous quest wasn’t what was in store for him, and for the first time Nightfall defied the gods and ruled for herself. Rather than send her friend into servitude for the Icewarden, as had his father before him, the clan’s priestess “spoke” for the gods and declared to all that he was to remain in the clan as her mate.
She had with a single sentence made him untouchable, and while she robbed him of his wild adventurous dreams, she did so to keep him safe – and selfishly, to keep her only friend near her.

Though they had been friends since their infancy, anyone could see that their offspring would never be valued enough to be sent to other clans. By all means the pairing never should have happened, and though many questioned her ruling, none dared speak against their priestess.
Only Daybreak dared question his friend, and rather than resent her for her decision, he instead was delighted to know that he was part in the biggest prank of all.

Smoke and Mirrors

Since he lacked for any mystic powers, the skydancer was eager to compensate and not let his mate be discredited. Protecting her secret, he instead took great interest in how others of her trade acted and presented themselves, becoming a master in theatrics. His role became to act behind the curtains, to move the smoke and mirrors of the mystic world so that she’d appear ever powerful, and unquestionable.

His efforts were rewarded as her prestige grew. Together they silently ruled, interfering for the clan’s well being.
And while his somber masked face might intimidate those that come to seek the guidance of the high priestess, he alone knows the mirth that hides behind it, as once again they play their part in the biggest play of their lives.

After both her parents left to serve the Icewarden, her home clan found itself burdened with an orphan hatchling, and saw a solution in sending her as a gift, strengthening bonds with their neighbors and getting rid of one more mouth to feed. The wary hatchling had heard tales of awful places. Clans were the members were made to work tirelessly to produce riches; clans where they would fight time after time in the arena, until at last their battered bodies would be exalted into servitude. So it was with surprise that she found herself in the then just starting out lair, with but a handful of dragons as they tried to build a safe home in the arid domain of the Icewarden. Initially left by her own devices, Mint found a knack in gathering plants and herbs that could be useful to her clanmates, and with time and training she grew into the an herbologist and the clan’s informal medic, using her trade to help her fellows and tirelessly researching to add to her ever growing collection of herbs. Field Work So it was a natural progression for her to accept the role of healer with the queen’s hunting party. What was not natural, however, was Pistache’s presence. Brought in to help her in brewing concoctions and medicine, the apothecary was pleasant enough, but had somewhat of an attitude towards her experiments - and herbal medicine in general - that ruffled her feathers in the worst possible way. If it were not for the queen’s direct orders, she would never suffer through his presence in her personal space as he went about “bettering” her potions. Though she had to admit he could be useful sometimes, and her alchemist’s pack filled with small potion bottles were proof enough of that. Glimmer As reward for her service to the clan, Mint was awarded with magic scrolls for a new image to match her station. Though she was never a vain one, it is fair to say that she is enjoying the attention that it brought her. Mint
Healer
Herbologist

A Fresh Start

Sent as a gift from an ally clan, Mint wasn’t sure what was in store for her in her new home.

Field Work

So it was a natural progression for her to accept the role of healer with the queen’s hunting party. No longer limited by the lair’s territory, Mint now went on missions with Cassandra and her fighters, acting as the party’s healer and collecting specimens and notes along the way.
The possibilities with real life observation of the fauna and flora of different flights were endless, and she eagerly sought out to better herself.

Glimmer

As reward for her service to the clan, Mint was awarded with magic scrolls for a new image to match her station. Though she was never a vain one, it is fair to say that she is enjoying the attention that it brought her.

Tools of The Trade

Trained as an alchemist and apothecary, the coatl was more interested in being left to his brews than in the clan’s politics. So it was with disgruntled surprise that he learned that his services had been sold to a new clan. Annoyed at having to stop his research, he traveled to his new home in the Icewarden’s domain, and the annoyance only grew as he learned that he was to act as an assistant to the clan’s “medic”.

Trained in the precise art of alchemy, Pistache disliked the hocus pocus involved with magic healing and with herbology in general. If it must come to that he would be a herbalist to the clan, and he made the distinction very clear.

So it was with begrudging admiration that he saw his new partner in action.
A formidable healer and a refreshingly like mind, Mint could match his knowledge with expertise gathered from her endless research into the arid wasteland around her, and she even – it hurt to admit – surpassed him when it came to the local flora – which could only be explained by the years she had ahead of him in exploring her environment. Something he would correct as soon as he could.

Partners

On a reluctant alliance, Pistache allowed himself to work together with Mint, and the results were most satisfying indeed. With the samples gathered in her excursions with the fighters, he was able to experiment like never before, and before long both had a well-equipped bag with many different potions.
More than that, it was progress indeed that she would allow him to tend to sick clan mates while she was away – something that would have earned him sullen looks and a very messy fight in the first days of his stay.

Even more interesting, Pistache found himself enjoying the company of his skydancer companion. Though the language was a barrier at first - coatls have a hard time communicating with other breeds, since their barbarian ways haven’t evolved into a more civilized language – they were soon involved in heated discussions about herb uses and whether or not it is a good idea to put unicorn dust on a smoke bomb. Refreshing, indeed.

Changed

As his partner was rewarded for her service, the coatl sought out an audience with the queen and her advisor, seeking a reward for himself.

It was only for research purposes, of course. One could not expect such a brilliant scientist to be hindered by such a petty thing as language when improving on his research. Surely it would greatly benefit the clan to use one of their precious magic scrolls to have him transformed into a skydancer.

And if Mint was stunned at that, well, that was only a side effect. One to be more carefully studied for his personal research.

Jennie
Vanished Beauty
Sweet and Trusting

Fairest of Them All

Jennie wasn’t always the clumsy, trusting guardian hatchling that now inhabits the clan.

It is said that there was once a skydancer. A great beauty among her peers, she was courted by many, coveted by all. But all the admiration just fed her ever growing ego, and little by little she became twisted. The great beauty began to dare the very gods.

She amassed many riches, gifts from her admirers and from those seeking her favor. And once she judged her fortune was enough, she went before the gods themselves. The vain beauty boldly sought to buy their favor, and as her ego grew so did their outrage. At last she demanded that she be made eternally young and beautiful, for no other could ever be as beautiful as her.

Enraged at the daring skydancer the gods decided to punish her, by granting her very wish. Eternally young, she was made into a hatchling again, and as her memories faded away she screeched at them for tricking her. As a final punishment, they turned her into a guardian – one of the very breeds she looked down on.

Finally appeased, the gods returned to their realms, leaving behind a small guardian, with no memory of the curse laid upon her.

Mirror, Mirror

At first the little guardian had no idea how she had gotten lost. Upon further thought, she also had no idea where she belonged to in the first place. The magic that turned her back had also erased her memory, and her small brain couldn’t possibly grasp the events that led her to her current situation.

With no clue of who or where she was, the little guardian found herself oddly drawn to her own reflection. Try as she might, she constantly found herself drawn back to it, so finally she gave up and made her way through the wilderness, following her own image as it flickered all around her.

And so she made her way to the icy domain of the Icewarden, dazzled by the ice walls and crystal caves that reflected a thousand times her own face at her, hundreds and hundreds of companions to a hatchling that only ever remembered being alone.

That was, until she suddenly found herself inside a lair that was very much occupied. Stumbling upon Cassandra’s clan, the small guardian was ecstatic to meet new friends, and despite protests eventually won the – very reluctant – affection of the matriarch herself. The queen suspected there was more about the small dragon than met the eye, but it was clear the little one had no more knowledge of her previous life than any of the clan members.

Given a simple name, Jennie was accepted into the clan. But sometimes word comes by of the vanished dragon. In those days, Jennie often founds herself staring into her own reflection, trying to see clearly the dragon that every so often flickers in her place as she stares into her own eyes.
Trying to find out more about the stranger that screams at her to come out.

Kyle
King
Exalted Warrior

Forgotten

Despite the decades spent serving the Icewarden, Kyle has little memory of that time. He knows not where he spent all the years since his departure, and only occasional flashes come to him.
Flashes of unending ice, glowing eyes and a memory of cold so sheer that he could feel it seeping into his very bones.

Not only did the king forget his service, but upon being returned to his clan the male had forgotten about his very self and the ones around him. Having left when the clan was still a budding group of stragglers, Kyle was unable to recognize his surroundings – the impressive mountain, the winding corridors of ice and the many dragons draped in jewels and silks were all alien to him.
Most of all, he couldn’t recognize among those anxious faces the mate he had yearned for ever since he had left her.

Stranger

Suddenly finding himself near the entrance to the frozen mountain, Kyle had no idea who any of the dragons crowding him were. Despite their enthusiasm on welcoming him, no faces were recognizable from the crowd.

More alien yet was the female who led them. While it was true that she was bigger than her kind, the skydancer bore little resemblance to his guardian mate when they first met.

A guardian female, Cassandra claimed that she would never leave her people to find a charge of her own. Kyle, then a mirror with no genes and no clan of his own, knew that her charge was, in fact, the clan she protected so zealously.
Cassandra would have given her life to see her clan prosper and thrive – so when the time came and the gods demanded a sacrifice he gave up his.

Upon his return the former king remembered little of his mate and couldn’t find her in the fierce skydancer that led his clan. But on closer inspection, beneath the shine and veneer of her new appearance Cassandra remained the same female he had known, and slowly Kyle’s memories returned to him.
There was, however, a small hiccup to his return: Cassandra’s royal consort and current mate, Agamemnon.

King

Wary, the female resigned herself to playing pretend for the good of her clan, and accepted Agamemnon as he was chosen by the gods as her new mate.

Reborn

To celebrate his return the king was gifted with many scrolls of immense magical power. While the clan he had left behind struggled to gather enough food to survive, the new home he had come back to was powerful and lavished its inhabitants with wealth and treasure.

With the scrolls the mirror transformed himself into a skydancer to match his counterparts, his feathers now as dazzling and impressive as any member of his court.
Donning the garb of a warrior instead of the gold reserved for his station, Kyle chose instead to remain a fighter – instead of the queen’s band of female warriors, Cassandra is now escorted by Agamemnon and Kyle whenever incursions to quell the beastclan are necessary. Rumor has it that there has never been a hunting party more in synch, or more lethal, in all of the icy mountains that make up the Fortress of Ends.
