I wake in the early morning, as usual, nestled in the soft warm fur of my familiar Mistwatch Shellion, who Draco told me, was called Turtle by his previous owner. I crawl on top of his massive head and absently scratched behind his delicate purple ears, which are nearly as large as myself.
What would Draco and I do today? The last few days Draco had been hesitant to go out. Actually to be more accurate, let me go out. My only guess was because of the scare we had with the owls in the woods. I know he's just trying to protect me, but I'm an adult now! I can take care of myself! I'll prove it to him! I decided. "Heyy Turtle?"
The shellion replied with a low, sleepy sigh. "Do you want to go outside and explore a bit?" I asked him. The large creature frowned and flicked his ears, a signal for no, not really. "Oh come on! There will be plenty of mist to see!" I taunt, trying to persuade the Shellion with his favorite activity, "Please? You don't even have to go everywhere I go!" The shellion's frown deepened, but it began to move toward the entrance. "That's a good boy," I say to him, scratching behind his ear again.
I quickly hide in this mane under his jaw so Draco won't see me. He'll just assume the Shellion was going outside on his own, as he often did at night. My caution was unneeded. Draco was still sound asleep in his bed with his back turned to the entrance of his room. He didn't even twitch as Turtle shuffled past.
"Perfect!" I say as we exit the lair. I look back at the exit to make sure nothing followed us out. That sneaky snake of Draco's liked to stick her nose in my business much too often. "Alright Turtle, I'm gonna go explore for stuff! You just hang out here...and do whatever, okay?" Turtle sighed a response. "Good!" I say as I fly off.
I had become much stronger over the last few days, and learned how to use magic to help me lift larger items. I didn't find much as I flitted between the trees. Just more sticks and some bones again. But then I hear I whispering that I had heard on a number of occasions. I fly toward the source, and uncover another orb, the ones that Draco doesn't like. I listen to what this one says, "sssshhaaaa....younnnnghhhlinggggg......rhhelleeese mheeee..." the voice fades in and out, then goes silent. I pick it up carefully, and bring it back to Turtle, who hadn't moved much at all since I left him. I set the orb by his feet, and return to the forest.
I fly between the trees quickly, easily avoiding the branches because of my small size. I pass a small clearing, when I hear, "Oi! Dragun! Ey! Come back! I want te' speak wit' ya!" The voice was very odd, with a thick accent. I circle back to the clearing, careful to stay high enough in the air in case I needed to escape. Sitting in the clearing was an old, battle worn [item=longneck skirmisher]. Draco had told me that these creatures were very intelligent, and very dangerous for an inexperienced dragon. I flew a little higher.
"Ey naw, I just wan'na talk. I be too old fer that fightin' business an'more. Come on down so I can speak wit ya."
"Put down your weapon first," I say warily, eyeing the long heavy stick the longneck was holding onto.
"This? This just be me walkin' stick, but I s'pose if it makes ya more com'frtable..." He threw the stick a few yards away from himself. "Naw come down 'ere so I can speak wit' ya decent."
I fly down to his eye level, but stay far enough away so he couldn't grab me easily. "What do you want?" I ask.
"Well first of all, I'm Salvalence, but e'reyone calls me Sal. I come from them mountains up north-west a here. Been jus" explorin', mah fightin' days are over. I'd been thinkin' joinin' a dragon clan would be fun fer a while, to experience sometin' diff'rent. So I sorta be askin' if I couldst join yer clan?"
"Well, I'm not the leader...my brother is...I don't know what he'd say," I tell the old longneck. His voice told me he was telling the truth, and wanted to join a dragon clan with honest, non-hostile intentions.
"Why don't ya go check wit' 'im. I'll jus' be waitin' here. Me tired feet won't wanna walk too much farther t'day."
"I don't know..." I struggle with what to do. It's late enough in the morning that Draco has to be up by now. He usually doesn't check on me right away, but he would be soon...and if he discovers I'm missing...but on the other hand, if I bring this longneck back, Draco would know I was out anyway... "I...I really don't know...he might not let you..."
"Hm. Either way, I got's sometin' that you may find valu'ble," He reaches into his large pack and pulls out a large round object, wrapped in a few layers of cloth. He unties the cloth, and sitting on his lap is a [item=unhatched shadow egg]. "Now don't be gettin' your tail inna knot here. I found 'dis egg abandoned near one o' tem dark lakes you 'ave in this region, an' I felt compelled to take care of it. Now let me revise mah questin'. Can this egg join yer clan, wit me as his/her protector? I swears I want what's best fer this baby, and I will continue t' search for a home for it if you deny me."
"...Yeah...you can join..." I decide. I couldn't leave this egg to wander unhatched with the longneck. He was genuine and sincere with his request. I will let him join, regardless of what Draco has to say. I lead the longneck back to the lair after he gathered up his bag and walking stick. He carefully slung the fabric over his neck, making a makeshift sling for the unhatched egg.
I return, and hear Draco calling out my name from inside the lair. He's discovered I'm missing. In a few moments the coatl comes running out of the entrance, a very worried expression on his face, and his feathers bristled with fear. "Taz!" He exclaims with worry, but his feathers begin to bristle in anger, flaring up to their full splendor, making him more intimidating. "Why would you go off like that Taz? I told you, it's too dangerous alone! Even if you're full grown!"
I say nothing. He can't understand my voice anyway if I did try to say something. With Draco, I always have to communicate with charades. I fly over to the longneck and land on his walking stick. "Who are you?" Draco hisses, baring his fangs.
"Whoa, calm down der me feathery friend. I be Sal, and I ask't yer brother 'ere if me and this little one could join yer clan," he says as he shows the unhatched egg to Draco. Draco's feathers relax a bit at the sight of the egg.
"Where did you get that?" He asks softly.
"I found it in these dark lands. I figure it needs a dragon's touch t' 'ave it hatch, so I been lookin' fer a clan t' join. Up! It appears that the little eggy can sense you two dragons! It just jumped a bit!"
Draco eyed him warily, "You may join with the hatchling...let me see the egg for a minute." The longneck brought the unhatched egg over to Draco, and set it down by his paws. Draco touched it with his nose, then said, "This one's been waiting a long time to hatch." Just as he said that and removed his nose from the egg, it began to rock madly back and fourth, the blue gems on the surface glowing brighter, then shattering to bits. The egg cracked open, and a blue guardian with brown wings flopped out of the shell bits.

[i]He cried out with a squeak, and fixed his purple eyes on Draco. He made another squeaking noise and awkwardly tried to walk. He tripped over his massive paws, and ended up on his back, madly paddling at the air in attempt to right himself.
"Oh boy. Dis' one's gonna be a handful," said the old longneck. "Alright 'ere we go," he said as he helped the hatchling sit up normally. "What you gonna name him?" He asked Draco.
"Taz found you and him. He can decide. I'm guessing you can understand him since you said you talked with him earlier," Draco commented as he nuzzled the little guardian, who squeaked with pleasure.
"Me?" I say. I get to name my new brother? "Um...how about Lance?" I recall a name from a story Draco had once told me about his old clanmates who all died of a mysterious disease. Sal tells Draco of my name choice.
"Lance..." he casts his eyes down at the hatchling, obviously remembering his old clanmate. "Yes. Lance is a good name. You hear that youngling? You're name is now Lance. Welcome home."

I awaken suddenly in the early morning, before the sun has risen. I feel a wet, furry thing pressed against my backside. I swing my head towards it, beginning to bare my fangs, until I see what the thing is. It's a small Tundra hatchling, his red and grey pelt soaked with rain. He shivers uncontrollably, still uneasily asleep. I quickly get up and nudge him into my nest. He wearily wakes up, his bright Lightning eyes giving me a look of pure exhaustion. He doesn't make any sounds. I curl around him, and move the egg between my paws, where it won't get wet from the hatchling's soaked fur.

[i]Where had he come from? I think as a fold my wing over him, creating a little tent of sorts. His shivering soon eased, and he relaxed, his breathing becoming steadier as it puffed against my shoulder. I hear a ruffling of feathers above me, and see a [item=storm seeker]. Perhaps the hatchling followed it to me. I wonder where the hatchling's parents are, and why the poor baby had been wandering about in the rain following this bird.
I sigh, it doesn't matter now. He's with me, and he's my responsibility now. Who would have ever thought that six days ago I was barely alive, but now I have a hatchling and an egg to care for. I tuck my head under my wing next to the little tundra, and fall asleep for a few hours more.
[center]~~~[/center]
[i]The hatchling nudges me awake, repeatedly poking me in the side with his snout. His shining blue eyes tell me he's hungry. I reach into my pack and pull out some plants I had found. The hatchling devours them greedily, hungry from his ordeal last night. I let him out from under my wing, and he bounds out to explore the space under the tree. He nibbles on every plant bit he can find, and recoils in disgust when he finds that the lichen does not taste good at all.
He bounces back to me, and fixates his eyes on the peculiar egg resting in my paws. He jumps forward to touch it, but I quickly intercept him with my head before he can decide the egg is a plaything. He sits back on his haunches, disappointed at my rejection of his play. He stood up, and carfully moved forward, his curiosity still piqued for the odd egg. I let him approach now that he's calmer. He sniffs the egg and bops it with his nose, as carefully as a hatchling can.
The egg made a sharp and sudden cracking noise, surprising the young Tundra. He reared up on his back legs, tripped over his tail, and flopped over on his back, but he didn't cry out. He scrambled to his feet, spread his wings, and puffed himself up to look more intimidating. I laugh at the little puffball. I feel the egg rock slightly in my grasp, and watch as the crack widens with more crackling noises. The shell falls away to reveal the oddest hatchling I'd ever seen.
She had a lovely green body and purple wings that matched her Shadow eyes. She was small, and had many soft, spine-like ridges on her neck. Her oddest feature was her nose, which had a decorative ridge. Perhaps this is a Nocturne, a dragon breed I had only heard about from fairytales we told young Shadowlings before bedtime. I nuzzle her neck, and she squeaks in pleasure. "Hello there little one," I tell her.

[i]She attemps to imitate what I said, but all she manages is an awkward squeak. She looks around, and sees the young Tundra, still fluffed up in surprise. She excitedly bounds forward at him, causing him to puff up even more. She imitates him, spreading her wings and puffing out her chest. It's a sad imitation really, with her not having any fur. The Tundra runs around behind me, and presses against my back and resting his head on my shoulder. The new hatchling, excited by this new game of chase bounds up my arm onto my shoulder, and lets out a squeak at the Tundra. He jumps away and runs behind the tree's trunk, taunting the new hatchling to play. She excitedly bounces after him.
I let the hatchlings chase each other under the tree. I go outside of the space, and retrieve the bowl that I had set outside last night to catch the rainwater. It was filled to the brim, and a good amount sloshed out as I picked it up. I brought it back inside, and looked at my reflection, deciding it was time to remove my bandages. I carefully take off the fabric on my face to reveal deep scars on the left side of my face. I blink my two left eyes, glad that I can somehow still see from them. I remove the remainder of my bandages, glad to see that I wouldn't have any other lasting scars.

[i]After wearing so many bandages, having nothing on left me feeling bare. I retie some fabric around my arms and legs for some protection, and fashion some birdskull apparel from items I had found and some feathers that the storm seeker had dropped. I smile at my reflection. Much better. I look back at the hatchlings, and see them sprawled out in the nest, already tired from romping around after each other.
I curl up around them, the small female letting out a few indignant squeaks. The Tundra still didn't make any noise, but squirmed some as I moved him. I watched the little hatchlings sleep, and tried to think up names for them. The female, I decide, will be named Pandora because of her mysterious nature. The male takes me longer to think up a name for. He hadn't made any noises yet, making me wonder if he is mute. He's rather curious and playful. I decided to call him Theo. I curved my neck around them, and joined in their nap.
