Chapter 6 Followed Draco[i] Taz has grown much bigger since hatching from his lonely egg. Well, large is relative. He's still only the size of my head still, but his chubby and awkward hatchling features are beginning to show signs of his adult form. He's become quite a bit more talkative too, but his monotone humming still made no words to my ears. He would often chatter with Turtle, who would sigh, and make soft humming noises in response. I decided that today Taz was old enough to accompany me on my early morning scavenging mission. Taz insists on bringing Turtle along, but I refuse, and explain to the ruffled hatchling that Turtle would much prefer a nap, and wouldn't like trying to keep up with us. Turtle nods, yawns, and drifts off to sleep. Taz grudgingly agrees with me, but he's obviously still put off that his dear familiar isn't coming along. Taz clutches to my neck as I fly to a good scavenging area, he's not yet quick enough on his wings to follow me in the air. When we land, he immediately begins exploring. I let him go on his own, careful to keep an eye on him. Mainly I find twigs, logs, bones, and scraps of fabric. In a hollowed out tree I find a few hidden chess pieces and a discarded inkwell. I place the items in my bag, and walk over to where Taz was flitting through a dead log. I see a glowing light, and Taz pushes three glassy orbs out of the log. I touch it carefully, watching as smoke begins to form in the orb, becoming denser with each second I touched it. Suddenly I see a white eye staring at me, and I drop the orb. It hit the ground with a dull thud, and the smoke calmed until the orb was once again see through. "We should just leave these here Taz...I don't like them. They're creepy," I say to the hatchling. He flares his frills angrily. He wants them. "Why do you want them so bad? They're probably haunted," a say, flaring up my feathers. Stubbornly the hatchling tries to lift them, but he can only lift one an inch off the ground before defeatedly dropping it. I sigh, "Fine...we can take them...but they're staying in the hoard! Nowhere near the both of us!" Taz nodded happily, and began searching for more stuff. We search for another hour, then I call Taz over to go home. my satchel is heavy with items, and I fly home slower than I usually can. I leave Taz with the Shellion, who barely woke up when I entered the room. Taz swiftly few up to its mane, and made himself comfortable. I place the orbs in the hoard, careful to put them on a high shelf, so the inquisitive hatchling wouldn't be tempted to play around with them. I'd rather just sell them...too creepy for my tastes. I take the rest of the items to market, and exchange them for the lowest price. I didn't feel like bartering with other dragons today. I earned me enough treasure to weigh down my bag with a reassuring jingle. I return home and place the treasure in the hoard before going back out to hunt. Even though I am sure I was strong enough for the Scorched Forest, I am hesitant to enter. I had heard stories from my clanmates about how surprisingly strong the enemies there are. I enter the Woodland Path again, and gather enough food to last Taz for a while. Again, insects are easy. I return to the Training grounds, where the enemies fall too easily beneath my claws, but it's the only option if I'm to gather any seafood. After a few successful battles, I get an itchy feeling in my feathers. I'm being watched. I whip around, but see nobody, just grass and...vines? I hiss at the vines. There shouldn't be any vegetation like that in this open meadow. Slowly the creature rises it's hooded neck, and hisses softly back at me. It is a [item=blooming strangler].[i] It must have followed me from the forest. It didn't make any move to attack, it just sat there, gently swaying back and fourth. I decide its not a threat, and walk away. The Strangler follows. I sigh, great. Another wild creature has joined the party. I leap into the air and speed home, hoping to lose the unwanted snake. I reach the entrance to the lair quickly, and stand there for a minute to see if the Blooming Strangler had managed to follow. Sure enough, I hear a swish-swish of the snake slithering along the ground, and it comes into sight, speeding up as it sees me. Well, I guess nothing can be done about it now. I let it follow me into my lair. It tries to sneak into my bed with me, but I hiss at it, flaring my feather crest. Looking hurt, the strangler slithered over to the campfire, and curled up on the warm ground beside the coals. I'm not sure why I'm acting so meanly to this familiar. It had decided that I was good enough to follow and become a pet for. I close my eyes, and try to go to sleep. Right before I fall asleep, I feel the familiar slither over my paws. It slides around my arm, twisting between my paws, and I resist the urge to fling it across the room. I sigh. Fine. I fall asleep quickly. A strangler in bloom is at the end of its life cycle. It is ready to reproduce.

@Darknessdragon, aw, Draco has a pet now! (I don't blame him for being a little wary, I don't think I'd be too thrilled about a strange new snake trying to join me in bed either haha.)

Also super curious about these glass orbs!

I can tell Taz is confident enough to move on. We enter the Woodland path, and I become extra wary of enemies. Though Taz had become stronger, I myself wasn't sure how he'd fare in this area with stronger enemies. My concerns were of little use. The little fae was careful, sure to generate enough breath before sending out his magic attack. I shielded attacks toward him as much as possible, but my defense of him was often unneeded. The enemies were more interested in me. Suddenly, three wild owls flew over us, two green, one pink. I growled, this is too many. These are strong, and I don't have enough strength to defend against all three. I try to back up, but the owls advance. They won't let us flee. So I attack. I defeat the first easily, i wasn't ready for my counter attack, but as I slash it, the pink owl jumps forward and claws Taz with its talons. The little fae cries out, I turn, and much to my relief, he's still alive. Taz blasts it with his magic, and the owl is defeated. I need to make sure Taz doesn't get hit again. I shred the last owl with my claws, hoping it turns its attention towards me. It doesn't. I watch helplessly as the creature flies forward at Taz, still reeling from the last attack. "No! Taz! Look out!" I cry out. Taz rolls out of the way just in time, and reaches out with his claws at the same time. He lands a hit on the owl, and it crashes into the underbrush, and it doesn't come out. I rush over to the fae. "Taz are you all right? You learned how to use your claws!" Exclaim breathlessly, scared from how close I had come to losing my little brother. Taz nods, he's fine. Here, get on my neck, we are going home now. Taz doesn't resist, and climbs around my neck, clutching tightly to my feathers. I can feel him trembling. "It's alright, I'm here. Big brother's got you," I say as I fly him home. When I bring him to his room, he refuses to let go of me, so I let him stay on my neck as I retire to my bed for a nap. That's enough adventure for one day. Ping list for Updates @Stormdragon @Stormrunner @NewHope @Khoshekh @psychocanes @ArgenteaMoon
Chapter 7
Grown Up

Draco8077437.png?mtime=VHvo-gAARPs.png

Today, I decide, is the day Taz is allowed to come hunting with me. He's nearly full grown, and can fly quick enough to keep up with me for short durations. This morning I let him pick out some apparel, since some stuff would now fit him. Despite my protests that some of the things didn't match his color, he ignored my advice.

We set out for the Training grounds to make him a bit stronger before venturing out into the woods. He's still just barely not a hatchling after all. He's a magic user, so I hope he develops a healing ability. He catches on fast, and we overcome most of the enemies in the training fields easily.

The bark of the tree beside me glowed with a light blue hue from the lichen attached to it, effectively lighting the small space. I carefully stood up and stretched, my muscles complaining of soreness. I can now see out of both my left eyes, but the right eyes were covered with the cloth bandages. I hope I can still see from them, my ex-leader had scratched my face deeply. I sling my bag over my shoulder and walk outside. It was dark out, and the stars shimmered with their cold light. I shiver, tonight is a cold one. The moon was rising, a perfect circle of brilliant white light. I'd forgotten how it felt to appreciate the beauty of the night, especially in the Shadow lands, where nighttime was when the place came alive. I flex my wings, fanning them out to their full span. I felt good enough to fly, but I decided I wouldn't chance it. After all, my suddenly renewed strength could just be a temporary effect of that dark liquid the stranger gave me. I walk through the forest, weaving between the close knit trees, observing the way the moonlight struck the pine needles and made them glimmer with a silvery light. I soon become aware of a soft tapping noise. I follow the sound, hopefully it is some easy prey. Although the stranger had given me enough food to last the week, I figured I may as well start hunting now, while I still had enough. I prowl through the trees, following the sporadic tapping. A number of times the tapping had stopped, and I had to wait for it to begin again. I come up to a great silver evergreen, its branches laced with glittering spider webs and softly glowing lichen. The noise is originating from under the tree. I look through my heat-sensing eyes, but I don't find a creature of prey. Rather, I find an egg, nearly cold to its core. I rush under the tree to find the abandoned egg. It is carefully hidden underneath a layer of evergreen branches and needles. I clear away the branches to find the most peculiar egg, nestled in a small hollow of moss. It's surface was rough and bumpy, with odd protrusions. The surface was leathery and cold to the touch. [item=unhatched nocturne egg][i] The tapping had ceased the moment I removed the branches. My motherly instinct took over, taking pity on the abandoned, dying egg. I had mothered many hatchlings in my time, and I decided this one would be my little one too. I wrapped my body around the egg, nestling it next to my warm belly. The tapping noise began again slowly, occurring in less frequent intervals than when it had led me to its hiding spot. It must feel safe, now that it's not alone. I wait until the egg is warm to the touch, then I stuff my bag with soft lichen, and carefully I place the egg inside. I return to the hollow where the stranger took care of me. I built a small fire, and set my bag next to it, letting the fire warm the already warm bag. I collect as much lichen as I can, making a makeshift nest for myself and the little egg. I remove it from my bag, and curl up with it in my nest. It wasn't the most comfortable nest, but it would do. "I promise darling, I will always take care of you, whatever you are." I try not to think of my offspring that hadn't made it past infancy. This one will make it, I will make sure of it until my dying breath. I drift off to sleep with the egg safely pressed against my belly, and my wing covering my body.
