New Siblings

"Are they going to hatch soon?" I asked Candy. I shifted my grip on her antlers so I could get e better look at her three eggs. One of the three had very dim lights, I don't think it will make it. The other two occasionally wobbled.
"Yes, they'll hatch soon. Draco's out going to get Marten so she can be here when her new siblings hatch. He'll get the others on his way back." She glanced down at the eggs and moved the dimly glowing one closer to her body heat. We chatted idly for the next hour, sadly watching as the light from the egg dimmed further, then finally winked out.
I heard a gentle whoosh of wings from the doorway, and looked to see Dymura looping in her funny flying pattern toward us. She'd just recently grown up into a fine young adult. I'm still not sure what to think of her...if anything she's just a bit...odd. Her bird mask and cowl makes her seem very mysterious and witch-doctor-like and I know she's begun dabbling in alchemy and magic, as evidenced by her glowing green fingertips. Her purple eyes glow brightly from beneath her hood.

"Hello," she whispers, "The new ones are coming soon."
"Hi Dymura. Yes...they are. Are the others coming?" Candy replied.
"Yes. Draco and Marten are nearly at the lair. My parents know I was headed here. They will come shortly."
I am a little unnerved by the odd spiral, but I try my best to not appear so. I wonder how she knows these things. I notice her Cragbacked Ursa at the door shift as it laid down, again appearing to be just a gem-encrusted rock pile.
"They are here," Dymura murmurs right before Draco comes running in, followed closely by Marten. Draco begins quietly talking to Candy, likely about the failed egg. Marten hangs back near the entry, but still seems very interested with her unhatched siblings. Shale enters behind them with Thaddeus beside her. She's his role model for both her strength an wisdom, and accompanies her nearly everywhere. Po and Umbra hang around the doorway, and Dymura joins them, allowing more room for direct family members near the nest.
I hear a sharp crack and return my attention back to the eggs. The first to hatch is a male. He breaks through his egg quickly, and gazes around interestingly at us. His coloration is very interesting, a mix of red, purple, and blue. I wonder what he'll look like as an adult.

"His name is Rikki," Draco comments as the young imperial awkwardly flops out of the nest toward Shale and Thaddeus. His eyes show his amazement at the sheer size of the two guardians. He begins running as fast as he can between their paws, often tripping over his paws and wings. I glance at Marten. She's flattened herself to the ground so she can watch her little brother play between the guardian's paws. She's smiling contentedly. I return my attention to the other egg which had already begun crackling. From the little egg came the cutest little Shadow dragon I've seen yet. Her colors compliment her eyes so perfectly.

"Marten, do you want to name your sister?" Candy asks. Marten's ears perk up in suprise.
"You want me to name my sister?"
"Why not? We trust you," her mother smiled.
Marten approached the nest and rested her face right in front of the young female. The young hatchling stood up and placed her front paws on Marten's snout and began grabbing at the fur above Marten's eyes. "Zamara?" The hatchling squeaked and jumped on Marten's head to better attack her antlers.
"Sounds perfect to me," Draco hummed, "Rikki and Zamara...and Niki." He glanced down at the unhatched egg half hidden under Candy's arms. Shale carried over Rikki by his scruff. Poor little boy, he's already tired out and nearly asleep. The little imperial yawned as Shale set him down next to Zamara, who Marten had removed from her antlers. Everyone voiced their congratulations then left the hatchery.
"They're both beautiful again Candy," I say as I fly to Draco. Sadly we still have a communication barrier, so I just nod and give him a hug. He gets the idea, and I fly off to my own room.

Mira awoke me in the middle of the night by pouncing on my head. She seems just as light as the day she hatched, even though now she's a fully grown beautiful young dragon. "Dad! They're hatching! Come quick!" she exclaimed as she hurried off to tell Pandora and Mist.
"Kul," I whisper to my dear mate, curled up next to my belly, "Kul, get up. They're here." She yawns and stretches out, her sharp claws gently poking my arm. The ring on her finger shimmers brilliantly in the moonlight.
"I hope they've all made it. It would be lovely if my offspring curse wasn't passed on to my children," she mumbled sarcastically. "It's too early for heartbreak." She jumped gracefully from our bed toward the door, "Come on then love, let's go see our grandchildren."
"Oh don't say it like that," I mumble as I get up, "It makes me feel old." I smile jokingly and follow her down the hallway. I can hear the first hatchling already out and squeaking. She's a deeper shade of orange than Mira, and her wings are a pretty hue of purple that matches her eyes wonderfully.

Atlas shifts behind the nest, grinning from ear to ear. "Hello Kul, hello Ferguson," he smiles, "Say hello to your first grandchild, Isis." The hatchling pounced on her eggshells, crackling them under her little claws. The next three eggs all hatched at nearly the same time. Three little males; two snappers and a mirror who is a lighter clone of his sister.

"Hey dad, can I talk to you?" I hear Thaddeus' voice behind me. I set down my armor that I had just been polishing. I had encountered a strong enemy om my last hunting trip that had scratched up my armor pretty bad. Darn thing even knocked out a few of the spikes. I swish aside my armor with my tail and flutter over to Thaddeus. He's so big now, I'm barely the size of his head.
"What is is Thaddeus?" I ask, landing on his wing.
"Well. you know, um, well you know I'm a Guardian...and Shale's told me about this feeling I have in my chest...to find my charge...It's not that I don't like it here, I really do, but..." Thaddeus shifted uncomfortably. I know what he wants to ask. I've given him so much free reign to explore on his own, train with Shale, and do his own thing. I smile to myself even with such a free life as a youngling he still looks to me for permission. He's normally so bold and full of himself.
"Thaddeus." I interrupt his cautious stumbling over his words. "I understand. My brother Lance...was a Guardian. He never felt the need to leave to search for his charge, but I think that's because she arrived in the lair at about the time he would have wanted to leave...He never told me, but I think his charge was Marten. He was always there for her, always ready to play and protect her. I could see the look of love and comfort he had in his eyes when he saw her, and I would never stop you from finding the one you can call your charge."
"Thanks dad," he said quietly, moving his snout to me so I could give him a hug. I held onto his warm pink face as he lowered me to the ground. "I promise I'll keep a journal, and try to write back as much as I can."
"I know you will," I gaze up at my son. He's so many times bigger than what he was when he hatched. "Just remember, be your own dragon, never regret anything, and make yourself a good life. I can't wait to see you again." We made his leaving a small deal. We all gathered in front of the lair, said our goodbyes, gave him a few parting gifts of food and tradeable items, and watched as he flew off into the sky to follow his heart. I can't wait to see him again.

Hey there readers! ;D[s] I've [/s]Thaddeus has decided it's time to leave home to find his charge! I saw a thread a while ago of the traveling tundra (can't remember his name) who spent a week or so in someone's lair where they added to his bio and such while he stayed there. I think that would be a fun thing to try with this guy, so I'm going to set up a thread soon so he can start traveling to other clans! If you'd like to be pinged over in that thread say so! ^u^

Sorry guys, I haven't had time to update the story like I'd like to ^^'
A few updates to get us caught up to present-day:
Dragons Isis and Oakley perished during a hunting incident. (I totally forgot I was training and went into mindless grinding mode...) Of course their parents Atlas and Mira were devastated.
Po and Umbra had three more hatchlings, only one survived. Her name is Kairi
While Darko was out scavenging in the forest during the Light festival he found this beautiful girl. She was kind and bubbly toward him, but he really wanted nothing to do with her. He was in a very sour mood. For some reason though he let her follow him around (not too willingly, he did try to run off from her a few times). She followed him back to the clan where Kul grudgingly let her stay (Kira has a way with words). Kul is now very concerned about lair space. There really is no more room left now.
Thaddeus is still trying to travel abroad to other lands. During his recent voyages he was transformed into a fluffy Tundra and has grown stronger. His drive to find his charge has not diminished whatsoever.
Shale found a little Arcane egg during hunting and hatched it herself. She's taking care of the new hatchling like a mother. Her name is Ginger. Taz thinks she's adorable, and now there's another Fae in the clan!

The Disease

This can't be happening. Not to my family. Weeks ago Atlas came to me, complaining of a headache he'd had for a few days. We didn't think much of it...but then it got worse. Horrible black liquid seeped from the corners of his eyes and ears. He lost his sight. Over the course of a few days his breathing became shallow and ragged. I don't know how long he will survive now. It's probably a matter of days. He explained to me that this was likely the disease he came here to research. He also tries to keep us away so the disease doesn't spread.
It didn't work though with Rowan... I sigh as I look down at the freshly buried grave of my grandson. He had been so strong and full of quiet loyalty. He had been in contact with his father for a long while when Atlas had first become ill. As the outcome suggests, a bit too much contact. The illness affected Rowan quickly, and killed him within days of the first signs of sickness.
I've managed to keep Mira away from him so she doesn't catch the disease from him. Not only for the reason of not getting her sick, but also she has a nest of four eggs to care for. I've decided we will move away from this area tomorrow morning. Ferguson will carry Mira's eggs in his pack while we travel. Darko, Kira, and Mist have left already to scout ahead. They will return early tomorrow with any leads they may have found. This time we will not stop until we find a clan that will take all of us in.
Atlas will not be coming with us. He asked me that we leave him, so he's not a burden, and will not spread disease. He told Mira this yesterday. She was not happy about it at all, and she now even refuses to talk to me, as if it were my idea to leave him. Atlas asked of me to come to him right before we leave, when everyone is outside. Only me. I wonder what he wants, but I dread to think of the outcome of the little talk he wants to have.

Departure
Kul
The morning mist rises from the trees in the most elegant way here. I watch as the light from the glowing mushrooms slowly dim as the morning sun rises. Everyone is still asleep. Darko, Kira, and Mist should be returning soon. I hope they've found a lead, or even better, a clan to take us in. I sigh and watch the mist curl from my breath. It is rather cold out this morning.
Soon a bright light awakens me. I must have dozed off. It's Kira, with her bright reflective colors and her solar blades. Darko nudges my side, "Mother, we are back, and we have good news." He doesn't seem as grumpy as he usually is. I glance at Kira, She's a good influence on my angry boy. I notice a bright pink tundra walk into the clearing. Mist is hanging onto his burgundy horns.
"Who's this?" I ask, standing up.
Mist glances at the tundra, who then steps forward. "I am Thaddeus, of Draco's Clan. I am a Guardian-turned-Tundra on the search for my charge. I ran into your family here as I was making my way back home. They've explained to me the situation, and I think I can help. If my Uncle allows it, you may be able to join his clan. We have plenty of space, and I'm sure he'd be willing to help if he would not be willing to give you a home." He bows his head to me in respect.
I stare at him evenly for a while. This offer seems almost too good to be true. Finally after so long someone can give us a hopeful offer at a permanent home. "Let's go. Darko go get everyone up and moving. Kira, go get Ferguson and both of you collect the hoard into your packs. He knows what to do to care for Mira's eggs for transport. Thaddeus, feel free to hunt around here. Mist you can go with him if you'd like. Show him the best plant gathering places."
I walk into the lair to find Pandora. She's likely still awake working on some new alchemy brew or whatever magics she's gotten herself into now. To my surprise she's actually asleep, but her sleeping spot and position is ridiculous. Her head is hanging over the edge of an empty cauldron, her tail is curled around a bundle of scrolls, and her body is twisted and turned over her piles of books and items in an almost painful looking way. How does that girl sleep like that? "Pandora...Pandora. Wake up. Time to go. Pack up what you can carry and take the rest to the hoard so Ferguson and Kira can carry it. Hurry we are leaving within the hour."
Preparations go smoothy. We have been prepared for a few days now to be able to get up and go. Everyone has gathered outside and are waiting for me. Everyone but myself has said goodbye to Atlas. I walk slowly through the small cave system that was our home. It suited us well before we started having hatchlings. I arrive at Atlas' room. "Atlas? You wished to see me before we left?"
"Yes..." His voice is quiet, but not as raspy as before. I walk in slowly. He looks horrible, and he's so skinny. "Kul, you've been like a mother to me since I joined your clan, and I'm glad to have been able to give you grandchildren...even if all those that have hatched have passed away...I hope these new eggs will hatch into wonderful new grandchildren for you-" He burst into a coughing fit, flinging black goo across the room. "...but Kul, please, I ask you one thing..." I dread to hear what he's going to ask. "Kul...please end me. End this eternal suffering I am in now." Tears roll from the corners of his eyes. "Please Kul...I don't want to die alone. I don't want to fade away any longer...It's time I just went."
I'm frozen. I can't kill another dragon, not again. not after my assassin days. I can't. But this is his last wish. He must be in so much pain to want me to just end him.
"Kul...please. Please..." I lunge forward in a snap decision and snap my jaws around his now thin neck. I bite down as hard as I can, and hear and feel a sickening crunch as I break his neck. I hear him gasp, "Thank.......you....." Hot tears are streaming down my face from all four of my eyes. "Goodbye Atlas. I love you." I collect all of the wood I can from inside the lair and pile them around and on top of him. I light the pyre with a fire starter and exit the lair. Everyone's eyes are on me,
"Atlas...is gone...I have lit his fire. He was a great son, a wonderful mate, and an amazing father. We will miss him greatly. May his soul rest in peace." I walk away from the lair, and motion for the pink tundra to lead the way. My family pauses before following, giving the now smoking entrance of the lair one last look. I do not look back. I will not. I refuse to remember what I have done in the past few minutes.

Trying not to cry as I write this...
