Chapter 29 The Circus Kul[i] I listen to the energetic murmur coming from the festival as we approach. Ferguson convinced me that we should go now, before we miss the festival entirely. For the last two days now I've seen many dragons flying around in the air heading for the festival. The fairgrounds are always crowded during the first few days. The smells from the fairgrounds entice me closer, my mouth waters at the thought of some of the foods the vendors prepare. I remember a few delicacies from the last festival: twisted cakes, sap fairy floss, candied apples, whole turkey legs...my stomach growls at the thought. I have neglected eating for the last few days, much to Ferguson's dismay. As we reach the outer fringes of the fair we begin to see some other dragons attending the festival. For the most part around the edges they simply sat under the provided tents, taking a break from the somewhat organized chaos of the fair. A couple of hatchlings playing tag darted underneath Ferguson and continued on their way through the trees. He laughed with his low rumbling chuckle. The noise continues to grow as we approach and exit the tree line. Tents of all shapes and sizes are organized into winding rows. If seen from above the tents made a rough shape of the Shadow Emblem. The tents are brightly colored amidst the dark pines, all colors of purple and grey, brilliant hues of aqua blue, and the occasional red or white thrown into the mash of color. Jesters danced around the crowd, playing small tricks or performing mesmerizing magic tricks. Every so often I would hear an excited yell of someone winning a prize. I rummage in my pack and produce a couple of smaller bags for Pandora, Mist, and Mira. "Here's some money for you to spend. I'm going to rent us one of the tents in the forest for the next few nights. Go have fun and stay out of trouble! Mira, please stay with one of your sisters," I caution, staring down the adventurous youngling. She nodded, but I have a feeling that she'd wander off on her own. They take off down the nearest row, eagerly searching out the first game or food they would try. I nod to Ferguson, "have you spotted the rental tent yet?" "Yeah, it's over there, closer to the trees," He waves his head to the left, and I see the tent, a brightly striped one, big enough for at least a couple of guardians. We get in line and purchase an open tent near the northern border of the fair, then head into the crowd to explore. Our steps lead us lazily through the fair, our senses filled with the energy of the fair. We play some games, eat some of the delectable food, but mostly we walk through the crowd, watching the variety of the dragons present. The crowd begins to thicken and Ferguson tells me why, "It seems our path is blocked by a couple of arguing Snappers. How unusual." -We walk closer and listen in on the argument. The younger and smaller of the two Snappers is speaking. "But pa! You of all people should understand me! Hot caves and pools of lava smother me! Every day it's the same rocks, every day the same flames! I need to know what lies beyond!" "That, son, is why I have accompanied me to the Fairgrounds! You know none of the other youths were allowed to come. Old Mother is concerned about the disease that has plagued several lairs in this land, it's a surprise she even let you come at all!" The elder Snapper's voice grows in volume as he speaks. "Why should that matter? You were sent here-" continued youngling. "I survived that disease! You know this! And for some reason I am now immune!" answered the adult sternly, "My herd suffered greatly my during my migration! Are you so ignorant to forget my stories I've told you?!" The adult seems to realize what had been said, and hides his face into his hood. The young Snapper turns his head, perhaps embarrassed for having broached a sensitive topic. But the silence did not last long, the youngling turned back to his father, his flaming orange eyes burning with excitement. "I could learn about the disease! If you allowed me to travel I could gather information and maybe find a cure, so no dragon would have to die for it! That might be my search!" "Son, you are a Snapper. Not a guardian, you have no need of a search!" "But I have Guardian blood, MAYBE I need a search! Then I could travel and be a nomad snapper, just like you were!" - I was not a wanderer! I was looking for a good soil for minerals!" The adult is clearly miffed now that his son has insisted on continuing the argument. "Also-!" "Son! That is enough!" the adult growled, his patience almost gone. "Excuse me," Ferguson rumbles, interrupting the now bellowing snappers, "You are blocking the way, and I don't like your tone of voice." He pointedly stared down the older snapper who was still puffing from his argument. His fans were quivering and I have a feeling that he is angrier than he appears. "I- hruff- He!" Huffed the Snapper before he gathered his words, "He-He's my son, and he should respect me! This does not concern you stranger." The Snapper puffed out his chest, making himself look even more intimidating and angry. Never before had I seen a snapper so miffed. I notice a Ridgeback approaching us, wearing a security badge. I step between Ferguson and the Snapper and smile with my teeth, "Gentlemen, gentlemen. I suggest we break up this conversation or move it elsewhere before we get kicked out of the fairgrounds." I step on Ferguson's front paw and dig my back claws in, just to make sure he got the message to back off. Ferguson's paw tenses under my foot, but he doesn't continue the argument. The Snappers shuffle off to the side, and Ferguson and I do the same. I nod at the Ridgeback, who nods back and walks away. The younger Snapper speaks up, "Dad. I want to be able to explore! I don't want to be stuck in the herd forever! Shadow would be the perfect place to start my research, I've heard there's been a couple of breakouts here recently!" "I realize that I my not have any weight in this conversation, but you shouldn't decide your son's future. Someday every parent needs to let go of their child. My name is Kul, the matriarch of my small nomadic clan. We are searching for a home within Shadow. Forgive me for suggesting this, but," I look at the young Snapper, directing most of my words to him, "if you would like to join us, we are staying in tent 64A until the end of the festival. If you wish to join us, just find us there." I walk away to leave the Snappers to whatever else discussion they might have. Ferguson follows behind me, and we search for our tent. Since it is on the other end of the fairgrounds, we pause to buy some of the fair food, and play a few games. I spot Mira and manage to catch her for a few seconds to tell her our tent number. She wiggles from my grasp, obviously hyper on too much sugar. I hope she can find her way...especially since it seems she's ditched her sisters. We find the tent as the sun begins to dim behind the trees. It's dusky purple, with gently glowing sky blue stripes. The tent is just large enough for all of us, but Ferguson does take up most of the tent. I sort through my bags as Ferguson nibbles on his snacks. A few hours after nightfall, I hear the young Snapper's voice outside the tent, "Lady Kul? Are you here?" Hesitated the youngling, with a hint of shyness in his voice. I emerge from the tent to face the Snapper. He carries a small bag over his shoulder. "M-Madam, my father has decided that I can join you...if your offer still stands."He sighs, "He's not as grumpy as seems it's just...it's sometimes tough, and he worries. My name is Atlas, by the way, I originate from the lair of the Rare Flame." Immature and hotheaded...like Mira. Who knows what they'd get into if they paired up. "It won't be easy living with us, as we have no permanent home. They tried to comfort me, told me they all went quickly, but I know better. I've seen what happened before. I had been prepared to die for a long time. I knew it was coming. Inevitable really. Anyone who became infected with this terrible disease died. That's just how it is. I passed my leadership to Taz as soon as I knew I was infected, and told him he would be leader from now on. I told him he must stay away from me, and send any others who became infected to the new place I had chosen away from the clan. Taz insisted that he would only be leader until I got better. I agreed with him...to comfort my little brother and myself. Candy refused to leave my side. I told her many times to leave me, to stay away so she could be healthy. She refused every time, and hushed me every time I tried to bring it up again. After a month of being with me, she had not taken ill, and Taz and I decided she was somehow immune, or at least not susceptible to the disease. She was allowed to go back and fourth between the sick camp and the clan, as long as she first made sure to wash really well in the salty ocean water. Nobody else in the clan got sick after those first two weeks, and I was the only one left alive yet. She told me of two newcomers, a pair, a Snapper named Po and a Spiral named Umbra. Both were accompanied by the bears who are said to be guardians of the gods. I wished I could see them when I heard. I don't know how much time passed that I remained ill. This was the longest I've ever known the disease to prosper, normally it killed within a week or two of the first signs. Umbra came to visit me a week ago. She said she had some magic skills from the Shadowbinder that maybe could help. I agreed. Whatever she would do, I didn't think would help much. I had resigned to death a long time ago. She did her magic thing, a dance of some sort. I could sense her moving around me, swirling in the air, chanting. She lifted up my head in her paws, and kissed both of my cheeks, and told me to sleep. And I slept. I awoke to the quiet sounds of a gentle breeze moving through the pines. I didn't bother to open my eyes anymore, I knew I wouldn't be able to see anyway. I feel Candy shift next to me. "Good morning dear," she yawned, "Oh, I meant to tell you yesterday! Po and Umbra have three eggs now, isn't that great? What do you think, when you get better we should try again, yes?" I nod halfheartedly. "Yeah. When I get better..." "Draco...look at me." I turn my head toward her voice. "Draco...there isn't any fresh black stuff around your eyes. It's dry...I think you're better!" Her voice gets more excited as she talks to me, "That thing Umbra did, maybe it worked!" I reach up and wipe off my cheek, and find Candy was right. The black liquid wasn't gooey and wet like usual, but dry and flaky as I rubbed it off my cheek. I turn toward Candy's still excited voice, and slowly open my eyes, which seemed glued shut from the gunk. I gasp as my eyes finally blink wide open. The cave was dark, the light wasn't an issue, but something wasn't right with my vision, even though I could see fine. I tightly close my eyes, my mind spinning with confusion. Candy gasps, "Your eye! Your left eye!" "What? What about it?" I mumble. My head hurts. "It was pitch black! Not purple like your other one! Let me see them again!" "Ugh. No, that hurt my head, and was so confusing," I tuck my head under my paws. "Um, then one at a time? Try just your right one first...that one looked normal." I sigh skeptically, but slowly squint my right eye open. I...I can see my arm...and the pine needles that made up our bed. I slowly lift my head to look at my mate, who I hadn't seen in two months now. She was much thinner than she had been before, and lines of worry were etched onto her beautiful face. "I...I see you. I see you Candy, my love," I feel hot tears roll down my cheeks. "I can see you..." I cry and hug her shoulder. She clutches me tightly back. When I calm down she whispers gently. "Now, let's try closing your working eye, and see what your other eye is doing...If you're ready to try that. I take a breath and shut my right eye and open the other. "Whoa..." "What is it? What do you see? Can you see me?" I can see her...in a way. My head is spinning, this is very disorienting. Instead of seeing the colors and details that I should...I see a silhouette of sorts. A soft lightning-blue glow is in front of me, shaped like Candy, and moves as she shifts and turns her head. The glow is brightest in her chest, and two spots of light on her head. Her eyes. Surrounding her soft glow was nothing but blackness. I look down at my paws, which give off a gentle purple glow. "It's not you...I mean I see you...but not your colors, or any details...I think I see your aura...your element...Your whole body is just a lightning-blue glow...and mine is purple..." She's quiet for a moment, stunned I think. "Draco, that's amazing! I, we, need to tell Taz that you're alright! We should go now! This is great!" I close my left eye and open my right so I can see as I'm used to. "Dear, we shouldn't rush. I could very well still be sick and possibly contagious. We don't know much about this disease, remember? How about you just go get Taz, and we'll both talk to him once he gets here? Alright?" "Alright honey. I love you. I'll be right back!" She exclaims as she bounds out of the lair into the sky. I look around, taking in every detail that I had missed of this place in the last couple months. Don't worry, I haven't been sick or anything, I just sorta lost inspiration for this and playing FR, but I'm back now and should be updating hopefully at least once a week! Since I had been gone for so long, I decided something drastic had to have happened in the clan...so another outbreak. With another outbreak of course, came more deaths :( I flipped a coin three times for each dragon, and lost a few good ones (especially Lance! ;n;) I'm going to decide soon what I'm doing with Lance and Elian since they're Gen1s (I'll probably want to sell them since they are g1s) but if you're interested in any of those four send me a ping, PM, or CR!

Sickness

The disease...had struck again.

I don't recall much of what happened over the last few months. I had become very ill, the same evil black liquid clogged my senses. Mainly I could only tell if someone was near by their touch. I couldn't tell anymore if my eyes were opened or closed. I knew in the quiet way that Candy answered me that others were ill, and we had lost a few. I finally asked who was gone...she didn't want to answer, but finally she did...Valerie...Lara...Elian...and...and Lance...

Lance...I don't think I talked to anyone for a week after I found out my little brother was gone.

Representatives of their elements, sent out on their own missions, then later met and bonded as a pair. Both were accompanied by the bears who are said to be guardians of the gods. I wished I could see them when I heard.

I don't know how much time passed that I remained ill. This was the longest I've ever known the disease to prosper, normally it killed within a week or two of the first signs.

"Whoa..."

"What is it? What do you see? Can you see me?"

I can see her...in a way.

"It's not you...I mean I see you...but not your colors, or any details...I think I see your aura...your element...Your whole body is just a lightning-blue glow...and mine is purple..."

She's quiet for a moment, stunned I think. "Draco, that's amazing! I, we, need to tell Taz that you're alright! We should go now! This is great!"

I close my left eye and open my right so I can see as I'm used to. "Dear, we shouldn't rush. I could very well still be sick and possibly contagious. We don't know much about this disease, remember? How about you just go get Taz, and we'll both talk to him once he gets here? Alright?"

"Alright honey. I love you. I'll be right back!" She exclaims as she bounds out of the lair into the sky. I look around, taking in every detail that I had missed of this place in the last couple months.

Hello everyone! I'm back, here to write and play FR again! Don't worry, I haven't been sick or anything, I just sorta lost inspiration for this and playing FR, but I'm back now and should be updating hopefully at least once a week!
Since I had been gone for so long, I decided something drastic had to have happened in the clan...so another outbreak. With another outbreak of course, came more deaths :( I flipped a coin three times for each dragon, and lost a few good ones (especially Lance! ;n;)
I'm going to decide soon what I'm doing with Lance and Elian since they're Gen1s (I'll probably want to sell them since they are g1s) but if you're interested in any of those four send me a ping, PM, or CR!

He immediately flew to me and landed in my embrace. It was good to see him again, after so long. I explained my new-found ability to him, and since he had been curious, I looked at him with my left eye. He had of course been skeptical, curious, possibly frightened at the new appearance of my eye. I was also taken aback by his new appearance to me through the eye. His aura is blood-red, bright as fresh cherries. Very unlike his outward purple and green appearance. Taz, the one I still call my little baby brother, has decided he is the father of this abandoned hatchling. So much responsibility for a dragon as young as himself, but I know he is responsible and ready. I ask how our daughter Marten has been doing. Candy avoids my purple eye (I keep my black eye closed mostly), and says Marten doesn't stay in the lair anymore. Ever since Lance passed on she's been sullen, closed off, emotional, and vicious. She has created a little den for herself away from the main lair so she can be alone. Candy says her isolation is also partially because I had been sick. She's likely given up hope that I'm still alive, and Candy says Marten hasn't visited the clan or talked to anyone for nearly a month now. I will visit her tomorrow. Tonight we flew to the clan. So much has changed since three months ago. Taz, Shale, Marten, and of course Candy, are all that are left of my old clanmates. It is very odd to not be greeted by Lance, or see the quiet respect of Valerie, the bright loving atmosphere of Lara, or the quiet presence of Elian. Po is boisterous. His voice fills the room as he speaks. Umbra is incredibly quiet, barely says a word. She has a calm about her that makes her seem so still, especially for a spiral. I go to bed in Candy and my own room for the first time in such a long time. Chapter 31

It doesn't matter if you call him beautiful or handsome, as he'll be full of himself either way ^u^

I just posted a sales thread for the two of them, but I'll take Elian down and send you a CR. All I really ask is that you don't rename him!
