The Kamaitache’s remains were still warm, blood seeping from under the weasel’s formerly white fur. Balark walked away from the remains before the Beastclans found out what had happened to their comrade. They felt just a bit bad, an instinctive response, every time they heard the desolate cries of a Beastclan that had lost a sibling, a child or a parent. But a dragon has to eat and defend their Clan, so they made do.
The Skydancer ignored the shocked and mournful cries of the Kamaitachi’s siblings as they prodded at their fallen friend, scrambling as they searched among the ruins for who had torn apart their little family.
Except they would never find Balark nor his mentor.
The Mire loomed around the two as they set up camp for today.
“You need to control your temper.”
“I do.” Balark snapped back as they washed the blood from the corpse of a Kamaitache off their talons.
Twilight Cloud shook his head disapprovingly. “Temper temper Balark. One day this may be your downfall.”
“I’ll die when I’m dead. By the way, shouldn’t we be getting back to training instead of lazing around?” hissed the Skydancer at the Imperial. TwilightCloud just sighed in response, leading onwards in the Mire.
“There is more to being a warrior than just brute force, Balark.”
Balark didn’t respond to that, merely grunting and moving away from their mentor. TwilightCloud caught up to him easily enough, he was an Imperial and far larger than the Skydancer after all.
“You were too much for Ebon to handle, so you were assigned to me.”
I know. Balark snapped internally.
“Before I complete your training, I need a firm promise from you Balark. You have been one of my most….ill-tempered pupils, and among the strongest.”
“Go on.” The Skydancer did his best to rein in their temper as they met the steely purple gaze of TwilightCloud.
“Promise me that you will be noble with this strength given to you.”
The Imperial tore off an entire branch from a nearby tree with ease, it must have seemed like a twig to him, holding it in his claws before turning to his pupil.
“There is a firm line between friends and enemies, and this line has been blurred and bent by your wrath and fury. And if it bends too much...”
TwilightCloud twisted the branch with slow deliberate movements. It creaked and groaned.
“It breaks.”
The branch snapped in two halves with a cracking sound.
