A Wildclaw whose body is more clothes than feathers sits crouched beneath an old and bending pine, looking as though it had seen one too many storms in its life. Through her clothing runic markings glow and appear to shift with her slight movements. A low fire sits beside her and small white cloth before her. You quickly notice she faces north, and that a heavy pouch slouches against one of her folded back talons. You step towards her, feeling a sense of intrigue and also relief to find some sort of civilization and shelter before the sun dips below the gilt horizon. “Would you like a rune casting, my dear? It is not fortune telling; the runes cannot tell you what to do or when you may marry, but they can give you guidance from your ancestors and your wyrd.” The last word she says sounds strange, but feels almost as if it holds power, or as if some spirit or breeze whisked past your ear lightly. You can only tilt your head in question. “Think of it as though the actions you have taken in the past might determine what you do in the future. But do not feel trapped or discouraged, your wyrd changes with you, you are a being with free will. Whatever reading you receive may not ultimately hold true.” The dragoness does not give you her name, but her sense of strange mystery feels softened by the warmth of dying embers casting across her face. She picks up the soft pouch by her talon and from within you hear tiny clicks and clacks. Something is in there, but not made of metal, perhaps wood or bone. She holds the little pouch carefully as if it were more valuable than any gold or the jewelry she wore. It is closed by a drawstring, a silver charm resembling a hammer upon the twine. Embroidered in the leather is a strange symbol, a wheel-looking glyph with eight points. The sound of distant thunder rolls, the scent of oncoming rain fills your nostrils, and faraway an unkindness of ravens quork and crow into the graying skies. “So, what say ye dear traveler? Shall we read your path today?” Hello and welcome to Way of Wyrd! Here you can get a rune reading. What is rune casting or rune reading? Runes are attributed as an ancient alphabet from northern Europe. With the “Elder Futhark” the names of each rune are speculative recreations from Proto-Germanic or Proto-Indo-European languages. Rune readings are very similar to the divination art of tarot, which is a more common or more recognized form. Rune stones are my tarot cards in this regard. There are a few versions of this runic alphabet and each has variations upon the names, shapes, and meanings of each rune. Here at Way of Wyrd we use the Elder Futhark, what is thought to be the older version of the alphabet with 24 letters, separated into three sections of eight, called an aett (aettir, plural). These aettir assist me in keeping their order correct and even aids in their clarity when reading. Each rune has their own meaning, which can be affected by what way they land or are drawn, how they land in relation to others, or what order they come in within a runic layout. Many things can happen with the futhark! I could go on to list the meanings of each rune, but it is best to move on. All rune readings cost a small fee, different depending on the layout you choose. You can request to have this reading done for one of your dragons in a roleplay-style turn messaged to you privately, OR you may request a personal reading done by me, again messaged to you privately. No readings will be posted here to the thread unless requested as we value your privacy. Readings may be over sensitive matters or you may simply want nothing in public. In any case, do not be afraid to ask of the runes any question! Currently I am open to taking on five readings at one time. Some readings can be short, some long, but the nature of doing readings can sometimes be draining, especially if it is a complex lay of runes. I ask for patience if you come in and see the queue full, I promise I will try to get to everyone as soon as possible! A pinglist will be created and updated for those that want readings, or simply enjoy the concept. The status of openness of Way of Wyrd may depend in part on my college & job schedules, and I will try to keep that updated often. What are runes? You said there were other runic alphabets, what are they?
The runic alphabets of ancient northern Europe are a very popular type and symbol, even today. The oldest version we are aware of, the Elder Futhark, stems from Proto-Germanic or Proto-Indo-European according to linguists and appears somewhere during the Iron Age, ~150 CE. The shapes of the runes may or may not have been inspired by the Roman Latin alphabet. The middle Anglo-Saxon Futhorc is thought to date as early as the 5th century (~400 CE) and is inspired by the Elder Futhark. Last comes the Younger Futhark, sometimes coined Scandinavian Futhark, and it uses only 16 of the Elder runes and starts to appear around the beginning of the Viking Age (~793-1066 CE). In the context of rune reading, such as offered here, the runes are used as a divination art and as a way to ask for guidance or advice. There are more than one divination arts, and all are unique and are used in many ways. Many thinks of divination as fortune-telling, but this is not technically true. I cannot give you a one true definition, as there truly isn’t one, but divination is something you are welcome to check out if curious! Some people prefer the Elder Futhark since it’s the original, some people like the Younger Futhark because it is simpler or closer to their heritage. I take to the Elder Futhark because it is both older and because I come from a family who can trace to ancient Germania. Something about sticking with the older runes gives me comfort and a sense of “this is right,” if you decide to try runic arts, you may find that you feel better with a different futhark. At some point in the future, I plan to carve my own runeset, but that is a project that is a long time coming. Why rainbow moonstone? Moonstone has long been connected to the magic of the moon – a stone of protection for travelers, a gift between lovers of passion, a channel for prophecy, and a path to wisdom. Moonstone is also heralded as a talisman of the inward journey to finding what may be missing within, the parts of yourself that you may have lost or forgotten. I am a person who has a love of the open road and the discovery of the new, a traveler, and a person who has many things to find within myself. Ancient humanity was aware of cause and effect and the interconnectedness of all things. The word used to describe this interconnectedness was 'wyrd,' which was eventually perverted into a word we all know today: weird. Wyrd does not being something unusual or strange, rather it speaks of the far-reaching consequence of action. Now you might think, does it mean fate? No, at least not in the context of how we think of fate in modern times. Fate, our wyrd, is a destiny made by your previous actions. In fact, wyrd was often pictured as a web, often referred to as the web of wyrd. Think of a spider who steps onto their web; each step sends a vibration down the different threads and effects the entire structure and all that sits within. This mirrors how the actions we take can affect not just the self but others around you, or how someone else's actions can affect you and the people within their circle. Wyrd is also flexible. It is not permanent just because you did one thing or another, it changes with you and your further actions. Most rune readings reflect this. Many layouts require an evaluation of your past to determine your likely future, but this is not fortune-telling. For while the past cannot be changed, the future is mutable and impermanent. ?

There are a few other runic languages that I did not mention, but you can find a visual compilation here!

? What does “futhark” mean?
Futhark is simply the sound values of the first six runes. Fehu, the first rune, makes an ‘f’ sound; uruz, second, makes an ‘oo’ or ‘u’; represented by thurisaz, a strange looking character that makes the unvoiced ‘th’ sound such as in the word thorn, never like the word the; ansuz makes a drawn ‘ah’ as in the words awe, call, and law; raidho simply makes an ‘r’; and last is kenaz, which makes a hard ‘c’ or ‘k’ sound, usually interpreted as a k.

? Why use the Elder Futhark instead of the others?
There are lots of reasons behind anything. All are great!

? What are runes made of?
While runes have been found historically carved into stone or upon personal items, in rune casting such as this, it is traditional to carve your runes on wood, bone, or stone. I’ve even seen some metal runesets! There are many possibilities.

? What are your runes made of?
My specific runeset? Mine are rainbow moonstone tumbles with the runes engraved on them. This was not a set I made myself, as I don’t have stone-carving tools. At some point in the future, I plan to carve my own runeset, but that is a project that is a long time coming. Why rainbow moonstone? ? How long have you been practicing/researching?
Admittedly not long. I've been researching for about a year, but only reading for about half a year. I am, however, very passionate about it! I've always loved learning new things, and whenever I find myself into runic arts and research, something just feels good around me. I'm happy to keep practicing with the help of all of you.

? Are you a witch or are you just weird?
Apt question, indeed I am! To both. I'm a practicing Wiccan with a connection to Celtic and Norse/Germanic paths.
