When had he grown wise to the futility of it all—this never-ending clash for dominance between gods, fought by dragons who bled for masters that would never care, who could never understand? They called his kind children, and yet from the moment of his hatching until the last day he’d been brought to cow before the rotting sinewy omnipotence of the Filthy One, all Valen had truly ever felt was alone. At that moment, colder than ever, that same bleak feeling saturated his soul as he watched the mass of scowling dragons stalk closer, forcing him to the lip of the precipice. Enraged voices cut through the chorus of snarls—some of them he even recognized. “[i]Choose, betrayer! Filth or fang![/i]” “[i]He does not deserve to die in the blighted Mother’s filth! Rip him apart for his treachery![/i]” “[i]Death upon the commander![/i]” “[i]He is weak for deserting us! The weak must be punished![/i]” “Fools, the lot of you!” Valen retaliated. He felt a bit of earth give way beneath one of his back feet as his talons scraped the cliff edge. “You, who serve a corrupt god and judge me for seeking my own path! She uses you to sate her own selfish desires while I have done nothing!” There were shouts of blaspheme and heresy. The horde demanded his blood, and the vote was unanimous. The skydancer hunched his shoulders as best as his aching body would allow and readied himself for a charge. Then he heard an odd sound rising over the jagged landscape—a clear, flittering whistle. It held for a few heartbeats, then tapered off. Valen reflexively tore his gaze away from the mob and looked towards the horizon. Some sort of bird, perhaps? Surely not; few fauna were hardy enough to thrive in the Scarred Wastelands, and those that did certainly weren’t mad enough to make a show of it. His pursuers, too, it seemed, had stopped to seek the source of the noise, as an uneasy hush fell over the horde. Clearly this was nothing of their making. In the arsenic-yellow haze that crowded the skies over the Abiding Boneyard, a figure materialized. At first it was only a small suggestion of a silhouette, hanging perhaps fifteen-hundred meters or over the infested ground, with vague extensions that could only imply a pair of wings. Then, as it banked out of the cloud cover, he could make out the lithe, spindly features of another skydancer. A glint of crimson flashed across their primary flight feathers as they dipped into a roll, stalled, then pirouetted around suddenly to face the haze. They opened their mouth, and there was a burst of white-hot light. Valen instinctively scrunched into his shoulders and blinked a few times, then looked back up, and felt his blood turn to ice. There was a scream, if he dared even call it that—not a scream of dragon or beastfolk or anything else he’d ever heard; no, it reminded him of the calamitous roaring of the winter storms he’d experienced back in the Southern Icefields as a hatchling. More than that, there was an unsettling, distorted rasp to it that felt inherently [i]wrong[/i]. Another silhouette cast a shadow across the clouds, one that entirely engulfed the skydancer. In his peripheral, Valen could hear the nervous stirrings of the horde behind him. Unease escalated to jet-black terror as five—no, six—no, [i]seven[/i] sinuous lashing heads breached through the cloud cover, each of them large enough to snap the smaller dragon out of the sky and gulp them down without even having to chew. It was no dragon, though it shared the obvious characteristics of one; rather, the thing looked like an amalgamation—like some sick, twisted god had meshed a pile of decaying body parts together and somehow managed to form it into a creature the size of a small mountain. It flew on four haphazardly flailing wings. A fifth wing drooped uselessly across a partly exposed ribcage, the charred, smoking stripe dashed across its surface attesting to the success of the skydancer’s attack. What looked to be half a dozen limbs raked wildly at empty air beneath it. In all his years he’d spent prowling the mutated landscape of the Plaguebringer’s domain, not once had he ever laid sight on anything so horrendous. It looked like a demon that had just walked out of a fever-induced nightmare, and warrior’s pride or not, he knew this foe was beyond him, and he wanted nothing to do with it. He also noted that he was clearly not alone in this thought process, judging from the chorus of alarmed shrieks at his back.
