APNGs are pretty rad, but they're also a bit controversial. A lot of folks have pointed out that gifs just don't cut it, so the original designers of the .png got together and invented something new: the '.mng'.
It was a
massive pain to work with, not to mention bloated as hell, and pretty much no one used it.
Instead, a few cheeky b*stards got together and made the 'apng.' Literally just an animated png. It was lightweight, easy to use, and so backwards-compatible that even browsers that don't support apngs still display them nicely (they display the first frame).
This p*ssed the png guys off something fierce, and to this day they refuse to acknowledge the apng as an official extension of their format, despite apngs being supported by Mozilla, Apple, Google...
...and because of that, it can never be included in the 'libpng' reference library, which is a major roadblock to widespread use, and a part of why it's little-known. But I use 'em, and hopefully I can spread that usage around! ;)

Yikes, that's so petty of them! We should pett-tition the pgn people to get on the apng train, because they could make some serious gains to their brand, I think! :D
