The new responsive layout and theme system have arrived!
Earlier this year, we announced a plan for a site-wide update with two goals in mind:
- A responsive layout that can resize text and reposition elements for easier viewing on different screen sizes.
- A theme system that can support an official dark mode.
Today's launch is the first (and largest) individual step in that process.
Responsive Layouts
The team has selected a couple dozen test pages to make up our first batch of fully responsive and fully themable layouts. These pages were chosen because they are lower risk and least likely to disrupt gameplay as we roll out this very new system.
We also selected a few older legacy pages (Account Settings and User Search) to refactor and convert all in a single go.
- Alerts
- Dev Tracker
- Dragon Restoration
- Encyclopedia (Partial)
- Friend Requests
- Home
- Hub Pages
- Login
- Media
- Privacy Policy
- Registration
- Settings (Refactored)
- Users Online
- User Search (Refactored)
By default, these fully converted pages will automatically display one of four possible layouts to match the screens they are viewed on:
Phone View
Targets screens that are 750px wide or smaller, and have a vertical orientation.
This view uses larger text and includes an app-like navigation footer.
Tablet View
Targets screens that are 751px to 950px wide.
This view removes the sidebar so that a page's primary content can make full use of the screen. Navigation is moved into a dropdown menu near the top of the page.
Desktop View
Targets screens that are 951px to 1400px wide.
This view matches the traditional Flight Rising layout.
Wide View
Targets screens larger than 1400px wide.
This view takes advantage of larger screens to provide just a little more content with less scrolling.
If you prefer a set layout regardless of screen size, the newly updated Account Settings page includes a new "Layout" option, which you can use to lock in whichever layout you prefer.
Partially Converted Pages
Aside from a few legacy features (see further down in this announcement for the full legacy list), nearly every other page of the site has been partially converted for rough theme support and future adaptation to a responsive layout.
The forum page you're currently viewing, for example, is not yet responsive, but it can make use of site themes.
Site Themes
We are launching the new theme system with three options:
- Default - The closest match to our traditional colors with a few accessibility tweaks for web standard contrast.
- Dark - A dark, but vibrant theme using purple, dark red, and gold
- Slate - A more neutral dark theme using mostly blues hues
Extensive work has been completed site-wide to provide basic theme support on all non-legacy pages, even if they have not yet been fully converted to responsive layouts.
To force these pages to use your selected theme, check the box labeled "Experimental: Force theme settings on pages still in development."
Our initial Themes offering is just that, initial. The new system is created with flexibility and future theme offerings in mind. For example, 'Slate' is a direct result of community feedback following our preview earlier this year, made possible by the theme system. We're very excited about what this system can mean for the future of the site and what we can offer our community — increased accessibility-focused options (already in discussion) to Flight-styled themes and more!
Legacy Pages
A few sections of the website will continue to use the old website layout until they can be fully ported to use the newer code base. These pages will not support the official theme system until they are fully migrated.
These pages include:
- Coliseum
- Jigsaw
- Progenitor Creation
- Runestones of the Arcanist
- Shock Switch
- Tidal Trouble
Going Forward
We plan to slowly convert more of the site to be fully responsive feature-by-feature. Some of these updates will be nearly identical to their current presentations, others will require major rework and in a few cases complete rewrites.
There isn't a hard roadmap for which features will be completed first, but we will target what we can, bearing in mind which features can be updated with the least disruption and which features could benefit the most from this update.
We welcome and encourage feedback letting us know what worked well and what could be better with this first batch of fully responsive pages. Identifying pitfalls and problems on these less gameplay-focused pages will help us avoid making those mistakes on pages where it's most disruptive.
Technical Notes
Device Compatibility
The responsive layout update has been created with modern accessibility and coding standards in mind. This uses established web technologies that have been around for some time and are broadly supported by major browsers and devices. However, it is very possible that older devices, or browsers that have not been updated, will not display the updated site correctly.
3rd Party Plugins/Extensions
If you use a 3rd-party plugin or extension designed specifically to alter how Flight Rising is displayed, it is very likely that this update will cause it to break or function differently than before. This is because a substantial amount of the code used to structure the site's pages have changed. It may take some time for those who develop and maintain those plugins to update them accordingly.
Troubleshooting
While we have spent a great deal of time testing these updates on many different devices, an update that affects nearly every page of a website is likely to run into some unexpected quirks.
We've created a sticky tracking thread in the Bug Reports Forum to collect such reports in a single spot where they can be addressed most easily. If you experience an issue that you suspect is related to this update, please do the following:
- Check the bug thread to see if the issue is already known.
- If it is, do not re-post the bug unless you can contribute additional details or if the dev team has requested it.
- If the issue has not already been reported. Perform the following standard troubleshooting steps:
- Check if the bug is repeatable. It is not necessary to report if the bug appears to only happen once with no way to cause it again.
- Check that your browser is fully updated
- Check if the issue occurs in another browser
- Disable any plugins or extensions and try again
- If possible, check if the issue occurs on another device
- If the issue persists, submit a report to the bug thread including as many details as you can including browser, browser version, and operating system. If possible, include screen shots and steps used to reproduce the bug
- Typos can be sent to the Typos Megathread.
For our players who navigate the site with screenreaders, if you encounter any issues on the updated pages, please send us a message through Contact Us right away. Support is watching for your reports.
Miscellaneous Notes
The timeframe to pick up your Clanbound Unhatched Vigil Egg from Galore's Glorious Gifts has been extended by two hours. You have until Thursday, April 23 @ 11:00 server time to claim your gifts.
Thank you
This update has been long in the making. Words can't express how thrilled we are to be able to bring this to you today. Thank you for your patience and all your feedback. It's safe to take the sunglasses off, it's a new day on Flight Rising!
