This community has gotten alot more toxic and idk if I like how willing everyone is to tear staff apart over a mistake...
Part of it is the type of mistake made. For instance, the whole eyemageddon debacle was something staff had no way of predicting - there were no past examples of how the community would react to limited consumables given en masse, or how we'd react to a new breeding mechanic. This (the rage over metallic/alloy) is something that could have been immediately predicted would happen. Changing art on the site has always caused drama. People always get mad that something they liked is gone and no longer obtainable. People also get mad when something they've purchased/bred for no longer looks the way it did. And purchases are an inherently dicey subject when real money gets involved.
You can't get around the first part of the problem - that's just something that has to be weathered with art updates - but the second could have been mitigated; either they could get the fixes up quickly (as with Jupiter/Saturn) to lower the number of people who used the wrong design, or they could notify people that the art was bugged and that metallic/alloy should only be purchased with that grain of salt attached.
Staff did neither, and while option one would have taken crunch-time editing, option two had no effort attached at all. And that's what I see the most anger over - that staff knew they were going to change something immediately, possibly before it was even released, but still let people buy gem genes that were going to switch for an entire month.
People are making their anger heard because they don't want this to happen again. I think many of us are jaded at this point (or just used to how the site runs) and don't expect any sort of fix or compensation - just some reassurance that staff does care about the fallout and will learn from what happened here.
I don't think it's toxic to point this out. As long as people remain civil about it... an environment where any kind of criticism is shut down for toxicity is toxic in and of itself, and I'm glad that we haven't seen that here (or on Flight Rising in general.) Letting things slide just makes it more likely they'll happen again in the future, and for all I love this site and the speed it puts out new content, there's an unfortunate tendency for these kinds of gaffes to get swept under the rug. For a problem one hundred percent mired in lack of communication, that is not a good thing.

I understand the anger about the art changes, since it wouldn't have been obvious to everyone that it was an error.
What I find toxic are the players who are up in arms about Gaolers getting Fans, because how DARE FR put fins on a furry arctic creature!
I saw some of the same toxicity when Fireflies came out, and people were angry that it was better suited to apparel and how dare the team release a gene that is so lazy (and I actually saw it called lazy etc..)

Oh yeah, that's nuts. It's a fantasy game with fantasy biology. The starting point was dragons and we already have a race of behemoths in the heart of the desert that hate water but eat nothing but fish, so I can't exactly understand the cry for realism. Also, Gaolers clearly have genetics for leathery webbing... they do come with wings.
I can get dislike for the layering or just "I won't use this", but the 'this is ruining FR' sentiment is just baffling. :P

That is exactly my feelings.
I mean, I dislike gaolers because of their small wings. I want to like banescales (I wanted swiftwings, and got wyvern ridgebacks [emoji=nocturne sad size=1]), and I never really was a fan of fins (on most creatures).
However, off the top of my head, I can come up with at least two explanations for why Gaolers would have fins (or fans) and why they would be handy for them to have, even with the fur.
Honest anger at mistakes, or things being changed, I can understand, but I have never really understood the whole issue behind 'I hate this gene, get rid of it' whether that reasoning is because they dislike it, or it doesnt make sense to them or whatever.
There are many genes I would love if they were changed so I actually liked them (filligree needs to get rid of the mask and runes needs to get rid of the solid feet) but I know other players love them, so I can ignore them and use genes I love, that other players might not like. (crackle anyone?)
