Since she hatched, Contrast has always been an active observer. She would analyze other dragons and situations, then play them in her best interest. This talent manifests in many of her hobbies, such as an expected interest in chess. She left her lair in the Shadow Domain simply because she had run out of opponents to take her on in chess.

With her bright intellect and ability to plan and manage, Contrast had even planned to make her Chessmaster hobby a reality by starting her own clan. She gathered a number of other, stronger dragons and promised to lead them down the path to a flourishing lifestyle... and to be fair, Contrast did an excellent job at first. Her clan made a fine lair and they were excellent hunters and gatherers. Contrast was their battle tactician and helped them win all sorts of battles and acquire all sorts of strength and riches.

Then, rather abruptly, Contrast was kicked out of her own clan. The lair whose construction she had overseen, whose occupants she had trained, and whose hoard consisted of her earnings... All lost. She was a tiny Fae who could not actually hold her own in a fight against the dragons who she had guided to their new strength. Feeling they did not need her anymore, Contrast was simply chased out after her usefulness expired.

Understandably, Contrast felt betrayed. She was devastated, homeless, and feeling hopeless. She decided to go to Arcane, where she hoped her intellect would be appreciated, but no lair was interested in a tiny flittering Fae whose only talent was planning. Arcane's Domain already had plenty of those! But before she could give up and move on, Contrast was found by a dragoness named Satou. The optimistic Spiral took Contrast into her own clan, the Kuroneko Clan, to recover from her trauma and regain her strength... and Contrast simply never left.

Her new clan gave Contrast space to expand her battle tactics. She was valued not just for her intelligence, but for a quirky sarcasm and wit for humor that she had never explored before. Having experience in the matter, she helped Satou to establish the Kuroneko Clan's lairs and expand their hoard. Life improved for everyone as they all worked together, but Contrast still felt she was missing something.

That something clumsily flew straight into a battle one day. Contrast was out gathering when she saw a highly decorated Fae smash recklessly into a fight he honestly had no hope of winning. Under her guidance, the underleveled but overly prideful Fae defeated his enemy and slumped against a tree with her. As she forced him to down a few health potions, she learned his story and told him hers.

This fae was Orpheus, a Night Warrior (in-training,) who was searching for his "calling." He was hugely attracted to what Contrast told him about the Kuroneko Clan and adamantly insisted that he come protect them. Contrast correctly thought he was useless to them battle-wise at that moment, but couldn't turn him down completely. She took him home, where Satou warmly welcomed him into the family.

After Orpheus joined the Clan, he spent a lot of time training with and assisting the other fighters. Contrast found his firey spirit very curious and would always follow him about. Over time, it dawned on her that the younger Fae had the same firey passion for life as she had once had before being betrayed. She took a silent vow to make sure that Orpheus succeeded and never developed the sarcastic shell that she had. As their outings together went on, Contrast soon found herself making another vow regarding Orpheus: That he was to be her one and only mate, and nothing would keep her shadowed heart away from his obnoxious light.
