Biography

He was a mirror, then changed to a tundra and got the Okapi gene. Guess where I got his name from!

Samneric carefully prodded the beacon’s crackling logs. Tonight seemed longer and darker than usual. There was no moon to light up the valley, only Samneric’s comparatively tiny fire on the hill. He sighed, added a log from his stock, and startled when one of the charred logs cracked in half.

The breaking log pulled his mate from her slumber. The Skydancer blinked lazily at him, then at the fire. “Is everything alright?”

“Mm,” Samneric mumbled, glancing at her fondly. “Yes, everything is fine. I’m sorry for waking you. Go back to sleep.”

Ladybird made no indication she was going to do what he said when she stretched her wings and sat up in the little nest she’d made for herself near the beacon fire. She walked next to him and sat down.

“It’s dark,” she observed, looking out.

“Isn’t it?” Samneric loved the view from here on a moonlit night. The ground as far as his eyes could see looked like cracked pottery, periodic puddles during the rainy season shimmered like ponds of silver. “Nights like tonight, the beacon is very important.”

Ladybird chuckled and nodded, leaning her shoulder against his. “Yes. But I’d say it’s important most nights, wouldn’t you?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Samneric said quietly. “Dragons from Earth clans are usually pretty good at finding their way home.”

“I suppose that’s true.” Ladybird, nevertheless, didn’t seem convinced. “But a little help never hurt anyone, did it?”

Sanmeric chuckled. “No. I guess it never did.”

Samneric never quite fit into his Plague clan. He was, of course, as interested in survival as any other dragon, but he was ever the “follow the leader” type. His distinct trait of being a pushover led some of the dragons of his current clan to wonder how he ever got away from his previous clan at all. Still, here he is, and he is a valued member of the clan. Samneric is an expert in fire, which one might not expect from a Tundra Plague dragon. However, no other dragon knows how to keep a fire going quite like Samneric does. He’s always able to find kindling and fuel for his fire even in the barren wasteland of the Earthshaker’s expanse. No one knows quite how he does it, though it is always appreciated when the winter nights get particularly cold up north. Wandering dragons never need to worry about being to find their way home, because Samneric’s beacon has always been there to guide them.

It is a rare day to see Samneric alone. Even though his job, the caretaker of the clan’s signal fire, could be considered a lonely one, other dragons are always dropping by to visit him, even in the middle of the night when the signal fire’s warmth and light is most important. He is frequently seen with his mate, Ladybird, who sleeps near the beacon in order to keep him company. It’s equally likely to see Samneric with the clan’s local plague doctor and miracle worker, Trickwise. Almost everyone is sure that Samneric only merely tolerates the enthusiastic Sprial, but he’s never told Trickwise to find some other fire to circle. As everyone knows, including Trickwise, Samneric is something of a sitting duck. Other dragons will drop by, though, especially on cold winter nights because the beacon is certainly always warm. Sort of like Samneric

Though Samneric is a Plague dragon, it’s rather certain one could never know it. He’s never done much of anything to give the indication he might do whatever he had to in order to survive, though he has shown a bit of protectiveness for the dragons that he considers dear. He might even let his claws and teeth show for Trickwise’s benefit every now and again. Since leaving Plague territory, though, he hasn’t been in much danger. Perhaps his survival instinct is simply out of practice. Or, perhaps, he’s just one of those dragons who will always be a follower.
