“And just how much longer do you plan to stay here?” Simon pressed again, still holding onto his briefcase. He hadn’t bothered to set it down. Hadn’t even deigned to come near her desk, ever since she’d told him she won’t make it home to celebrate their anniversary.

“Look, I don’t..” she trails off, shaking her head, “I don’t know. I don’t work like you do, it’s different by the day. Things come up, hon. You know this.”

“I do, Elaine, I understand, but we planned this months ahead. You can’t leave what you’re working on for tomorrow?”

Elaine sighed, head dropping down into her palms. She could. It’s not an impossibility, it just looks bad on her as an employee. What would Minister Lehrer think if he came in to find Elaine tomorrow, still responding to yesterday’s correspondence? What would happen to that sweet promotion he had definitely been hinting at last week?

“.. No, honey, I can’t. I can’t leave until I have everything prepared for tomorrow. You wouldn’t walk out on your students mid-class.”

“I would. I would, for us. And don't say I'd lose my job — I’d get another one just as easily.”

Elaine could feel the headache coming on, the throbbing just behind her temple beginning to wear down her senses. This is awful, she thought to herself. She’s awful. Seven years they've been together, and she can’t even will herself to leave the office on time. Not on the night of their anniversary, not for the champagne and Reese Witherspoon movie she’d promised him.

“I’m sorry, baby. I can’t. I’m not—nobody else would hire me. Not for the salary I have now. We can do this tomorrow, can't we? Why don't we save it for the weekend, huh? Make a reservation at a nice restaurant?.. With the money I make for staying as late as I do?”

Simon exhaled through his nostrils, his demeanor visibly wilting. He opened his mouth as if to protest, before thinking better of it and resigning himself to yet another lonely evening. “Alright. This weekend. With your blood money.”

“That’s dramatic.”

“I know,” He said, shifting his briefcase from one hand to the other. “I’m heading home, Lainey. Be there by 8 or I’m locking you out.”

“Aye aye, Colonel. Get home safe, I love you.”
