What happens to a dragon when they are born into a clan that only sees you as profit, and barters them away when they’ve barely reached adulthood? A lifetime in a cage so small they couldn’t even stand up, exposed on a small podium, with an older mirror negotiating your price with faceless strangers? Randomers poking their fingers between the bars of the cage to check coloration, teeth, eyes…? One thing’s for certain, the adult who comes out of such an upbringing will be far from sweet and tender.
Although the high noble clan of __________ was Locke’s birthplace, it never came close to being a home. His egg was taken as loot during the clan mercenaries’ scouting missions, so he was considered merchandise before even cracking the shell. His first weeks of life were dedicated to mercenary ‘training’, a ruthless process of unchecked battles with older ‘merchandise’ in the clan. Those who showed weakness were whipped, and those who were inherently weak were beaten down in battle time and time again, until that weakness was no more. There was no guidance or supervision, just the incentive of coming out of a battle unscathed. Those who refused to fight didn’t get fed. In all honesty, it was more of a constant fighting ring than a training. To this day, his childhood scars remind him of where he came from.
Every day, Locke noticed an old-looking imperial peering through the bars of his cage. This imperial didn’t follow the standard procedure of arguing with the salesdragon over prices, or sticking his claws into Locke’s cage to check his physique. Finally, the imperial approached the mirror in charge of sales. After a hushed, excited conversation, the imperial handed something to the mirror in exchange for the key to Locke’s cage.
“Finally! I wan’ stretch these darn wings o’ mine so bad…” Locke muttered to himself.
To his great disappointment, his buyer took the cage as it was, spread his wings, and torpedoed upwards.
“Hey mister! Whatcha doing? Let me out! Do you think I’m some sissy that needsta be carried?!”
No reply. Locke’s complaints filled the imperial’s silence for the next hours of flight, as forests and mountains passed by beneath them. As the sun was starting to set, Locke was startled awake by the sound of his cage clanking down on a rough stone floor. For the first time, he got to hear the imperial’s rumbling voice.
“What’s your plan for when I unlock the cage, little friend?”
Little… friend? Nobody had ever called Locke anything other than Grey in his short life.
“Well, since ya asked… I’m gonna claw yer darn eyes out and get the hell outta here! What is this horrible place, anyways? And who the heck are ya?”
Indeed, the building where they found themselves was old and run down. It had tall, cobweb-ridden ceilings, with all sorts of mold growing on the walls. The windows were small rectangles that lined the upper part of the windows, although at this point they were nothing but rotten wood and broken glass. The floor might have had tile on it, at some point.
“Well… We’re home, little friend.”
“Locke! My name is Locke, ya old coot! Now open this cage s’that I can gouge out your eyes!!” Locke rattled inside his cage furiously.
“Nice to meet you, Locke. I’m Khem, and I like your fighting spirit. We’re going to need it for my project.”
Locke quieted down. Satisfied with Locke’s attention, Khem told the little wildclaw all about those he had lost, deleted by the creator. He told Locke about how he planned to convert this building into a laboratory, which would eventually come to be called Lab Zero. How he wanted to start making expeditions into the Void. By the end of the long explanation, Locke’s jaw was practically on the floor.
“And… Why do I matter in all’a this?”
Khem smiled faintly. “This is not work that everybody agrees with. When I start to work, I will need protection. That’s where you come in. I’ve been observing you, and you’re strong. Soon, you’ll be much stronger than I’ll ever be. I want you to protect me, and to protect this laboratory.”
“So what’s in it for me?”
“Well, we’re friends now, Locke. And friends pay friends for their hard work.”
Somehow, this had Locke convinced. Khem seemed pleased with this, and let Locke out of the cage. The next morning, the two of them got to work on the renovation of the lab.
As time passed, Locke and Khem developed a special sense of loyalty towards each other. Soon, Locke was at a stage where he unquestioningly followed Khem’s every command. If Khem asked him to roll down a hill yodeling, Locke would study the ancient art of yodeling and find the steepest hill to roll himself down. The title of ‘bodyguard’ was too small for the work that he did, as he fiercely defended Khem and Lab Zero from any possible threat. Loyal to Khem’s predictions, he became the most feared warrior in the area. Over time, Khem’s team grew. Daemon, Marik, Hate, and The General. Each one of them had their own specialized area of work. All fell under Locke’s fearsome protection and servitude. If Daemon asked Locke to dispose of an experiment (often another dragon), he would do so with his teeth.
When he wasn’t talons deep in his work, Locke was a completely different dragon. Lazy and negative, he always had something to whine and complain about, often using the rudest available language. He whined at Daemon for not cleaning bloodstains off his workspace. He whinged at Marik for making too much noise with his chainsaw. He harassed Hate for not following his Peaceful Cohabitation Guidelines (or PCGs). The serious, quiet, stoic mercenary who protected Lab Zero and everything it stood for became the Annoying Roommate when he was off-duty. Would you believe it?
But deep down, Locke was happy. Lab Zero was his first and only ever home.
