The great Frozen Shard clan, once the home of hundreds of dragons in the Southern Ice Field, had fallen apart
They had taken up a war with the local beastclans, pompous because of their impressive numbers and their fighting ability. Much to the clan’s shock, their troops fell quickly, the Wintermanes ambushing them in the night, destroying food stores and battering the dragons with arrows, even stealing or smashing eggs to decrease morale. The clan was absolutely decimated in a number of days, their camp ground destroyed. They had been prosperous enough to have imported elemental magic from other lands around their camps, allowing dragons to train and raise children of their natural element. However, after all the battle on their own home turf, much of their clan was destroyed, the remaining dragons of the clan were huddled in the parts of the clan that were their own element, Ice, as well as Earth. And one day, a single egg showed up in the Earth nest. Eyes shifted away as blame was thrown around. No one wanted to share their diminishing private food stores with a hatching- apparently not even it’s parents. And so the egg hatched alone. By the time it did, the clan was long dead, trampled under hooves. It was only by the luck of the deities themselves that the egg had hatched at all, with no one to take care of it. For days, the young nocturne scratched around at the edge of camps, trying desperately to find just a root or a bug to fill her hollow stomach. She had barely eaten in days when the Wintermanes arrived once again. They were ready to build their new camp in the areas they had cleared, those that had avoided annihilation from dangerous magic and rudimentary bombs. She hid in the remains of the nest where she was born, but was quickly found. Unsure of what to do with the young dragon, they brought her back to their faction's leader, feeling pity for the situation into which she had been born, all alone. |
And so it came that Neri was raised by Centaurs. Most of them were were not trained in magic, and therefore neither was she- raised in the magical remains of her clan’s old home. Being a Nocturne she was quick to copy their movements and speech patterns, but most of the time she simply remained quiet. She was taught to fight with arrows and swords, and to trample the ground on all fours, her wings pushing her along like an extra pair of legs. She quickly matured into adulthood, and as she did, she could soon see her herdmates growing wary of her as she began to seem more and more like the creatures that had attempted to wipe out their clan- she knew they had killed many, many Wintermanes. The Noctune woke up once in the middle of the night to searing pain and unable to see at all. She was bandaged and healed as best they could, but they quickly realized that her right eye was Beyond repair. She had been attacked in the middle of the night- by one of their own.
Having a dragon in the herd was quickly poised to pull them apart, now that she was old enough to be considered a threat. By the time the clan leader pulled her aside to explain the situation, she knew what she had to do. She had been raised with only a few centaurs. The clan leader, her wife, and their extended family. The rest of the clan had tolerated her as a child, but now that she was a dangerous fully grown dragon, she had to go. She shared a tender goodbye with her adopted mothers and siblings,Neri steeled herself to leave the only home she’d ever known. As alone as when she was born, Neri flew out into the night under the light of the full moon. |

And for so long, the moon was her only friend. The nocturne wandered alone, knowing better than to try and ally herself with other centaurs, but still fearful of other dragons- unsure of how to speak with her kin. She slowly met other dragons who spoke beastclan common, those who were friends with beastclan, or were raised by them, and from them she learned how to properly speak draconic.
She travelled around Sornieth, always alone and nearly always silent, finally even seeing the Earth territory from which she took her eye color. During her time in shadow, she mothered a clutch of eggs, and made sure she stuck around to see the children hatched, unlike her own clan. One of the children was stillborn, and Neri became wracked with guilt that she was unfit to be a mother. The father agreed to keep the remaining children before they came of age, as Neri left to grieve. It was something she always regretted. Neri’s main talent was the fighting she was trained in, And she worked hard as a hired sword. Jacaranda hired her as a temporary clan guard for the then miniscule clan as she was passing through the starfall isles as she wandered Sornieth. The mercenary worked hard for the clan, and for the first time since her childhood, had a regular place to call home. Though her quiet nature made her have some trouble making friends in the clan. The main Dragon she knew in the clan was of course, Jacaranda. Beautiful, powerful, clever Jacaranda. It was no wonder she fell in love. |
Neri has more friends in the clan, but still spends most of her time with the other fighters. Aside from her own family, she feels they understand her best. Neri is captain of the clan’s nicely sized guard now, and she helps to train young hatchlings that feel inclined to take up sword or claw. She has raised two children of her own, now. First, her daughter Minerva, who’s egg was found abandoned in the Mire. She and her fighting partner raised her, with much help from Juno, before Minerva moved off and started her own clan. The second is Royalis, her daughter with Jacaranda, a blessing from the Arcanist himself. Neri feels she has atoned for not being their to raise her other children, and has even attempted to seek out those who are still alive. She is happy, though. Neri has friends and a family, is under no risk of attack from her own, and is strong enough to defend herself. What more could she ask for?

Glaciea the ice sprite was Neri's last gift from the centaur herd who had raised her, though most of the centaurs did not know thier herds beloved mascot of magic was leaving before she did. The sprite was bestowed upon them for being a clan who embodied the ideals of the ice flight despite not being dragons of the ice element, and Neri's mother knew that she did as well. The sprite was her only friend for years and years of wandering, before she learned to speak draconic and became friends with other dragons. |
