A WORLD WITHOUT END

He had always liked his dramatics. The lair he favored was carved into the overgrown ruins of a spiraled cathedral he discovered early in dreaming and decorated to his fancy. Every evening, he would send a cat to your window with a wine-empty bottle and an invitation to tea written in heavy cursive on a creased cream card. Sometimes, to his delight, you would even accept.

You would slip into the dreaming and make your way to his domain where he laid out his offerings: custards, and sweet rich tarts, and pastries with delicate golden sugar-dusted crusts. He pulled out seats for you in his tattered suit of crushed velvet, many arms moving like clockwork above his head.

Then you two would talk. The cities before this one. The treasures he gathered across all the worlds and all the times. The word of the miller who had taken to the streets, skinning fish to sell for leather. All the while his eyes lingered on you, heavy and sweet as sun-warmed honey.
