Clan Founder|Librarian
Neutral Good
Oddly obsessed with the Death's Head Stag, Invernale should not be allowed into the Coliseum's Training Grounds, lest she encounter a pack of stags and refuse to leave.
The clan founder grew up in a clan much like any other, although mostly devoid of non-draconic life due to the leader's zealous hatred of any and all wild creatures. By the time she had reached adulthood, she'd barely seen any animals outside of the pages of a book. Thus, she immediately left the clan she grew up in and swore to found a new clan that didn't hate animals. Or just the Death's Head Stag. Apparently that's the only one that counts. Invernale founded her clan in the ruins of an old fortress, hoping to be able to convert the island it rested on into a habitat for her favourite animal. However, she was never able to convince a single stag to make the long journey across the strait to the island, not even with the help of Kushiel, so she eventually allowed some other dragons to settle on the island. Most of those dragons immediately left after learning why the ruined fortress had been abandoned, but those that stayed formed a close-knit clan. They also quite quickly decided that Invernale shouldn't be in a position of leadership, and instated her mate Kushiel as leader instead. Invernale probably didn't even notice. Instead, she focused on renovating one of the dilapidated rooms to serve as storage for her field notes. As her research on the stag piled up, other dragons began to store their books in the room as well, since it lacked the book-ruining dampness that was found in some of the outer rooms. Thus the library was born, with Invernale as its keeper. The books are quite safe there, as Invernale will cast her strongest spells without hesitation to protect her research, and by extension all the other books. [Writing missing.] Despite being the founder of the clan, she is not the current leader; however her voice still carries more weight than most others'. She does run what could be called the clan's library, even through it's really just a series of rooms where you can put books that you don't mind going missing. Rows of shelves cover the library's floor of the fortress, spilling outside of the designated area into the surrounding hallways as well. A lot of the collection isn't really books, but loose research papers and whatever a dragon may have been fiddling with while reading a book, left on a shelf, and promptly forgotten about. The library still serves its purpose, even if your book may end up buried under a thousand-page essay on the life cycle of the Death's Head Stag. The library might have a small printing press in a back room, but even then the cost of keeping such a collection of books can't be underestimated. Much of it is possible through Invernale's connections with the Tourmaline Archives — she can request books on loan, whether they're for herself or her clanmates, such as old folklore for Solace or various manuals and instructional guides for Phidi. In return, she convinces a clanmate to type out and bind a book or two of the clan's most promising research as a donation to the archive. But small donations aren't enough to become a VIP member of the archive. And Invernale has never worked there, so her connections are unclear. Perhaps some of her own research was of particular interest to one of the archivists. Or maybe she just constantly bothered them about the Death's Head Stag so often that she was granted full access so that she could finally learn that those books didn't exist yet. Invernale is also a reasonably accomplished caster. Much to her annoyance though, she has yet to develop a spell that enables the efficient transport of live animals over long distances. However, she is pretty good at making things explode. And also at creating temporary copies of things. Thus if you try stealing books, there's a pretty good chance that they'll just explode in your face when you read them. ...Though that's not actually too unusual for any book penned by an arcane dragon. A casual look around the library reveals a stack of handwritten papers. It seems someone was trying to take history notes. This fortress was created hundreds of years ago, in response to conflict between the Ice and Arcane flights. It was meant to be the rally point for the first line of defence, being positioned directly in the likely path of any oncoming assault. A large force was stationed there for the duration of the war, with lots of extra space to bunk additional dragons when preparing a counterattack. Many layers of tunnels and basement were dug underneath the fortress, for that was the best form of defence against the Ice flight's preferred siege tactic. They would summon a massive blizzard around the target clan, and using multiple shifts of mages, keep the storm active for days until their enemies had frozen to death. The tunnels served as shelter, far enough away from the blizzard to use magical heating to keep warm, and so large that limited food farming could even happen underground. To this day these areas are likely still mostly intact , but due to disuse rubble and junk will need to be cleared out of the way before they can be re-purposed. When the war ended, the fortress' guard was reduced to the minimum needed to protect from minor raids, with plans to call in soldiers from other parts of the Isles in case of larger scale assaults. After many, many years it was expanded to include members of a research group who were deemed important enough to need protection and dangerous enough to need to be kept away from the mainland. Details on the group are sparse, for... something happened to them. They were found dead, and whatever did happen was bad enough to even frighten away the most daring of Arcane dragons. As such, the fortress laid abandoned for over a century, until Invernale brought over new dragons and founded this clan. Likely, she had no idea of this place's history. Though, having spoken to her myself, I get the feeling that nothing could have scared Invernale off of doing something she had put her mind to. (The signature of the dragon (or beastclan?) who penned this is illegible. It might begin with a C?) Underneath that essay rests a smaller piece of parchment. It's penmanship is messier, and it appears to be a private note. Further investigation indicates plans for the fortress existed long before any rumours of war. I found one old document that contains a request for an imprisonment spell of unheard-of scope. I will be contacting the Observatory shortly and requesting access to the Archives.
