CW: VIOLENCE AND GORE

His first memory will always be of the sun warming his scales at the time of his birth. His second will be of the shackles clipped around his wrists, the silver chains gleaming menacingly, a reminder of who is the master and who is the slave. But this life is all you know. When the whip strikes your back and raises welts, or the cuffs chaff your scales, or your blood and sweat crusts upon your brow, you grit your teeth and bear the pain.

Jia’s world changed when he first began to experience envy. When he stood at his post, the Guardian would let his jeweled eyes wander, his gaze always lingering on the nobles who thrived freely under his protection. They lived a glorious life, a life where they never feared a stick beating their battered bodies. Never once did he see them beg for food to fill their shrinking bellies. A plentiful, satisfying life.

Jia was reminded of their fortune every time he bled, and his envy grew into a hateful wrath.

He wanted to watch them all burn.

The day passed slowly, the sun agonizingly crawling across the sky at a sluggish pace. Arid hot air continued to push down upon Jia and the other drones who stood guard at the mines. The echo of labor and steel on rock continuously rang in their ears, and sometimes the crack of a whip thundered across the canyon. A flash of a familiar maroon figure drew Jia’s attention, and the Guardian watched as his sister Viper was dragged further into the mines by a large Imperial. His brow furrowed with confusion. Why are you here? He thought, chest tightening with worry. Her post was at the Eastern courtyard-

Jia’s stomach dropped when she lashed out at the master who held her chains, spitting like an angered Phytocat, claws grazing his snout. His crimson blood hadn’t even appeared on his maw and the Imperial had already drawn his katana. The blade snaked to her throat.

Kneel.” He commanded, but Viper remained standing with defiant eyes. The master slashed her legs then, forcing the dragoness to fall to her knees. Jia’s grip tightened on his spear, his chest heaving with every breath. The world around him faded and it felt like an eternity had passed as the Imperial raised his weapon. It came screaming down in a brilliant arc, but clattered to the ground as a large spear tore through its owner’s chest. The Imperial stood shocked for a moment, disbelief etched across his perfect features, before he ultimately collapsed upon the ground, dead.

A deep, guttural roar tore from Jia’s throat then as he felt a surge of new power flood his veins. He did not care that more masters rushed to attack him, or how all the slaves who witnessed this ordeal continued to watch with newfound awe. No, he only cared for her, and within moments, he was by Viper’s side, raising her from the dirt and dust.

Yanking his spear from the fallen drake, he whirled around in an arc, catching a Ridgeback’s neck with the silver tip. He twirled his staff with a saber-wielder on his left, quickly disarming the Pearlcatcher and sending them flying into another master with the whack of his tail. Instinctively, he lashed out with his right paw, slashing the face of an Imperial. Howling, he slammed into the great drake, quick to sink his teeth into their throat. As bitter blood gushed into his mouth, Jia realized he had never felt so alive.

Viper fought just as ferociously, snarling with an unrivaled primal rage, a whirlwind of talons and fury. She had picked up the Imperial’s katana, wielding the weapon with training that had been instilled into her since day one. Dragon after dragon she cut down, empowered by the cheers and cries of other slaves, who rattled their chains like a powerful drumbeat one would only hear in war. Her heart beat with them as she slaughtered the tyrants that abused all.

But the glory faded quickly as it came.

An arrow sunk into her right leg and she screeched. Distracted, Jia turned to watch his sister fall, only to feel a mace crush his skull, his golden blood splattering across the sandy ground. He too fell, mind reeling with a blinding white pain. From sheer aggression alone, the Guardian attempted to rise, but someone’s paw slamming into his back halted his attempts.

You will burn for this.

The butt end of a sword knocked him cold.

Jia awoke in chains, body pressed against darksteel bars. It was night now and crickets hummed a soft tune. From the faint light of the moon, he could tell that he was in the palace’s coliseum, where illustrious battles are held and slaves are burned. His suspicions were confirmed when he saw that the pit in the center of the arena was filled to the brim with sticks. Something stirred on his right and Jia turned, realizing that Viper too was chained in a cage besides him.

Sister…” He greeted in a soft whisper, moving closer and desperately trying to reach her with one paw, but his shackles kept him bound and distant. “How are you fairing?

I’ve had better days…” Viper groaned, hoarse voice bubbling slightly. The dragoness coughed, lungs rattling. Jia frowned, displeased with such a sound. “You?” She managed weakly.

I am fine.” In truth, he was far from fine, half of his face caved in and most likely a mix of mushy clay and crusting blood, but he did not want to concern her.

A faint chuckle. “You’re lying.

He laughed, slouching against the bars, back to her. “You have always known me so well.

It is a sister’s job to know her brother.

Viper, I-

Hush…” She whispered, attempting to conceal the tremor in her voice with her fading courage. “We will not die.” The Guardian slipped into sleep then, her soft snores relaxing Jia’s tense, weary body. It was like they were hatchlings again, curled together in the training rooms.

Eventually, he too succumbed to slumber.

He awoke with a start as two large Ridgebacks dragged him from his cage. It was early morning, the sun just beginning to peek over the edge of the stadium, but there was no crowd to attend this execution today. He writhed in their grasp, but he was still weak from yesterday’s battle and their grip was as strong as iron. As he was dragged to the pit, Viper watched, pressed against the bars, face slack with fear.

Jia passed nobles and masters he had never seen, their eyes bitter and lips curled with disdain. He felt his rage begin to burn tight within his gut and he returned their glares just as angrily. Soon enough, the Guardian was tossed upon the pyre bed, the dark scaled Ridgebacks effortlessly grabbing his chains and fixating them to the four metal posts placed at every corner of the pit. The sticks bit into his battered body, clattering as he scrambled to right himself, but he was too weak to even stand.

He watched then as one noble brought forth a burning torch, and Jia’s eyes widened slightly with terror. Time slowed once again as the torch was tossed into the pyre bed, the kindling instantly catching flame as if influenced by the work of witchcraft. Dread weighed heavy within his chest as the fire crackled and flickered, growing closer, growing larger. The blaze roared into an inferno within moments, and soon, Jia was screaming in agony as his entire body was scorched with searing heat.

The world faded away.

Child o’ mine… Such an unfortunate end. Especially for one who is destined for glory.” The voice of a woman, soft, motherly, comforting. This world felt ethereal, and Jia contently snuggled into the arms that cradled him. “But, your time has yet to cease. Rise now with the power I have bestowed upon you since birth. Honor me, pray to me as you cleanse this world, and make me proud.

He had dreamt once before, but he had never remembered his dream, for it forever continued to elude him. However, he woke this time with the feminine voice still echoing crisply within his mind. Flames burned around him and he could feel the fire curl around his claws, an alluring and promising magic that breathed life back into his cracked hide. And within the moment of his awakening, Jia knew exactly what he had to do.

Let them all burn.

Flames raged tumultuously across the scorched battlefield, eagerly consuming and leaving nothing but ash. Jia watched, bathed in red blood, as his own fire wrought destruction upon a clan of evil. His sister, Viper, silently approached and stood besides him, pale gold eyes glinting cruely from behind her masked helmet. And within the roar of the inferno that blazed before them, lay a solemn silence only teased into existence by the stench of death. They observed the slaughter with a familiarity few were accustomed to, empatheticless for the sake of war.

They finally moved forwards when only embers remained.

Jia awoke to the soft coo of his dove. From his bed, he could see the bird resting on its perch, bathed in early morning sunlight from a slight crack of the tent’s entrance. The familiar sound of the army reached his ears and roused him from his weariness, compelling the Guardian to leave warm silk sheets and heavy furs.

He dressed himself in armor slowly this time, thoughts lingering on last night’s conflict. There was always a hint of regret the next day. This time, it felt heavier within his chest, but Jia quickly pushed these feelings of guilt aside. Cradled by the familiar weight of his armor, the Guardian left his tent, greeted by the warmth of the sun and bustle of the army.

Dragons that he passed paused mid-step respectfully, before continuing their daily task. Jia weaved through passage after passage, occasionally halting to watch a training exercise or overhear the routine recording of supplies. Soon, a familiar sparring ring came into sight, obvious by the circle of spectators that surrounded it. It was a shallow bowl carved into the desert ground, large enough for an Imperial, but smaller than a coliseum. Shouldering his way past, Jia paused at the lip, looking down and grinning slightly at the sight of Viper and Wikker.

They were locked in battle, blades clashing with ear piercing shrieks. Viper, familiar to a larger opponent, kept her distance, but continued to advance with attack after attack. Wikker remained consistent, continuing to parry her strikes with ease, a dark menacing shadow. Both appeared evenly matched and every move looked like clockwork. It was impressive how easy everything appeared to be.

Flaring his wings, Jia leapt down into the pit, dust billowing around his form as he landed heavily on the earth. Wikker was the first to cease the match, sheathing his blade and bowing respectfully to Jia. Viper hesitated, clearly displeased that he had interrupted, but eventually returned her katana to its scabbard. “Brother.” She greeted, voice slightly muffled by her masked helmet.
