"You must come. Hopefully not with force."
"No, you can't do this!" Cried a mother in her weak state, blood gushing out of her mouth as she failed to fight the pale force back. Vaina stood there, staring at the poor, weakened dragon. As to his usual duties, he had arrived to the scene to guide a dying dragon to the Underworld, a place where lost, unfulfilled souls find their new meaning.
Now, what stood in front of him was just an awfully tragic sight. A dying young mother who due to her usual routine, had gone for a hunt to feed her two young hatchlings. Vaina didn't quite know what had happened beforehand, but it wasn't hard to figure out that the mother had suffered fatal wounds, her chest pierced brutally with no sign of weapons or convicts anywhere.
Perhaps it was an attack by one of those possessed, aggravated dragons that had been bringing menace to the surrounding area recently, or perhaps it was a freak accident of sorts with tools or the local wildlife. However it was, it was no Vaina's concern. The only thing on his blank stare was guiding the poor dying soul to her next destination.
"Please..."
The young woman begged, gasping for breath with every word. Still struggling, even if her strength was fading.
"My babies, they need me. I can't... leave them."
Silence fell even deeper. Only the passing dragon's quiet sobbing filled the scene. After the labored breathing had become just quiet enough and the physical struggle had subsided, did Vaina finally kneel down. What followed, was quiet, eerie and cold, yet strangely comforting low humming. As Vaina's "lullaby" filled the silence, did the dragon's heartbeat fade to obscurity. No longer than a minute had gone by, and it was clear that she had passed.
And with that, Vaina reached his long claws on the late mother's eyes, closing them for good. His own eyes were only seeping voids, staring at the now deceased young woman with desensitized deadpan expression. The pale force only did what he always did and slowly guided the soul off to the Underworld. Another day, another untimely death.
The title of "Underworld's Guardian" always has to belong to someone, more specifically a soul who used to be mortal, so they could guide both sides of the same coin. Perhaps when the Nocturne was still young and new to his duties, he'd question more why he was the one to carry out the ugly deed that made others fear and dread his presence. There's no changing destiny, however. So be it grievous or not, Vaina would stick to his call.
After all, it's only a question of if he'd ever get his second death. Why think about it for the rest of eternity, when you can just fulfill your duties. Eternity stays busy when you have work to do, so don't think, just do.
