AKUTA - The Devourer

In the Wyrmwound, a great many things fester under the Plaguebringer's watchful eye. Most disease, sometimes buried emotion, and occasionally (perhaps most importantly) a hunger. Not hunger, the simple kind that takes most beings by surprise when their bellies are no longer full, but a hunger, a craving, a desire with an edge sharper than the keenest blade. Most dragons will go their whole lives without experiencing the true power of this kind of yearning. Fewer still will ever indulge it.

Akuta is exceptional in a great many ways, though, not least of which being the fact that she has done both. Among the clans that populate the Scarred Wasteland, she has a reputation as a scavenger, and her particular hunger suits her lifestyle as a result. After all, when so little grows and a Guardian's great body requires nourishment, there are few sources to turn to. Other dragons, at least, are rarely in short supply.

Of course, she does not go out of her way to hunt down unwitting victims, because she is her deity's daughter through and through. Those who lose to her in combat are acceptable to consume, having proven themselves the lesser combatant, and comparatively unworthy of survival as a result. Frankly, if she were to be bested and then devoured, it would not be a terrible slight to her honor. That said, she picks her fights wisely enough to avoid being bested, and by extension, to avoid being eaten.

Still, there is a thrill to the crunch of dragon bones between her teeth, an itch that she sometimes must resist scratching. Under the eye of the Order of the Colossus, she knows better than to indulge herself in the open. Without proof of her peculiar tastes bringing harm down upon the clan, they cannot righteously oust her from their lands. Her taboo meals must be taken in secret.

Thankfully, Faes are almost universally easy to overpower when they travel alone or in small groups, and Spirals are quite the same once Akuta gets past the point where her victims attempt to crush her windpipe until she chokes. They also travel in such large groups that it takes time for a straggler to be noticed missing, allowing her the chance to escape with her record unblemished. There is a reason Faes and Spirals rarely make it to the Order's Trials, let alone through them.

But sometimes, lying awake at night with her hunger roaring in her chest, Akuta wonders why her goddess granted her such desires. It seems to be neither blessing nor curse, inexplicable as it is, and yet she is absolutely certain it is the result of divine handiwork, much like her unconventional appearance. No other dragons she has met feel this hunger. None of them seem to have light and life leaking from their bones.

No matter. In the Scarred Wasteland, survival comes above all else, even questions. Even gods.
