"The Wizard's Vessel"

little is known about Desdemona Bint Khaldun's childhood, except that she was raised for the purpose of becoming a possible vessel. From childhood, she was devoted and did her best to excel at all her classes. She went to an all-snapper school (only Snapper dragons have the power to become a vessel holding such magic) and lived her entire youth like this. Then, when she became an adult, her graduating class's ritual took place and the old wizard's vessel chose her as the new one.

The elderly snapper before her was someone Desdemona greatly admired. Strong, full of will and power and a good teacher to all. Then, when he held a claw up to hers, her vision filled with light, and she was gone.

The One that woke up was neither wizard nor Desdemona. A mix of the two was born, walking shakily on their legs like a newborn fawn. They didn't know how they felt, couldn't quite discern their voices in their head just yet. Everything was noise. Every light was too bright to look at.

They do not remember how they found their way to the Oasis. They remember feeling as if there were a hundred eyes watching them all at once. They remember entering some kind of building or.. cave or... something. They remember walking through a cloth divider into a room where it was finally, blissfully dark and silent, and their senses were no longer screaming at them. It was there, where they finally slept, for the first time in days.

Desdemona no longer exists. Neither, in a sense, does the wizard. But what lives on carries both their memories. Both their emotions. A thousand years of magical knowledge and around eighteen years of a young girl's life, born and bred to be a perfect vessel for something else. What sordid emptiness! What loneliness she had so often faced. But she no longer exists. What's left can never be lonely, even if it wants to be.
