Quote:
Alden wore a soft smile on his face at the little hatchling who waddled down the tunnel. Though he rarely speak, he'd grown very fond of hatchlings lately; he liked playing with them and making things with them. It was strange, he knew, considering he used to have little patience for them.
He gently took the picture book from them, clearing his throat. He'd started reading books for the hatchlings of the clan in the library, and he found it much nicer than staying in the tombs, worrying about his prophecies.
This hatchling, he was particularly fond of, and he'd thought of offering them a job working with the spirits. They'd come crying one night after he'd read to the clan, saying that nothing made sense and they'd tried to read, but just couldn't. They'd been listening to other hatchlings their age reading, and had grown upset with their inability to do so. After that, he made sure to set aside time to help her, and hatchlings like her learn how to read and write. It was difficult, yes, but he found it far easier than his prophecies.
Chocolate, the little imperial, sat by his shoulder, listening very intently. They loved Alden's classes. And she loved browsing Alden's personal library, next to the tombs. She'd even found a copy of that book she loved that'd gotten buried! She didn't understand his hesitancy to read it to her, but she'd still occasionally sneak away to look at the funny illustrations regardless. One day, after weeks of begging, he finally read the book to her, explaining every single word she didn't understand and every illustration. She was rightly horrified, but after talking it over, she seemed much calmer.
"It's still a pretty book. " She'd grumbled, a bit upset her favorite book was so grim.
Alden had laughed, and shook his head at her.
