Biography

Wataru Yuuki
This universe has been my home, but I must leave it for the ocean of spirit
In the Space Defense Force, each platoon is named for the brightest star in a certain constellation, and their emblem is of said constellation. Take the main platoon in the series, the Sirius Platoon. Named for the brightest star in the dog constellation and the brightest star at night, it’s no wonder that there emblem is of a dog and that they’re one of the best platoons on the force. Of course, no platoon is complete without a captain to lead them, and Wataru Yuuki is and was a fine example of one, for he is like a dog, willing to give it all to protect his “pack.”

Wataru is the father of two sons: Mamoru and Manabu, the latter of the two is the main character of the series. His wife Kanna runs their small family restaurant while taking care of the two boys. It’s painfully obvious that Wataru loves his family, but his job as a captain in the Space Defense Force seemingly dictates his time with them. From what we can tell, he’s gone for months at a time, and when he visits he can only stay for a short time. His family doesn’t mind, for as long as he is able to visit they can stand his long periods of absence. Young Manabu especially loves it when his dad is home. However, fate decided to tear this family apart in the very first episode of the series.
One night a visit with his family is cut short due to him being called out to rescue a stranded train. He doesn’t know it at first, but his two sons stow away to watch their dad at work. When he does find out, he’s not very happy and tells them they’re not his sons in a small fit of anger. He’s quick to forgive them, for his love for his boys knows no bounds. An alien battleship then comes out of a white hole, and it’s practically indestructible. It nearly destroys Big One, their father’s train. In order to protect his crew, his sons, and the passengers they rescued he orders everyone to move to the coaches. He plans to use Big One as a decoy so that the others could get away. His young son Manabu realizes that his dad might not survive, and tells him so.

He first turns over command of the platoon and train to his first officer Schwanheld Bulge, who later becomes a father figure for Manabu, then comforts his sons by giving them words of encouragement. It’s a hard scene to watch. As Big One moves away, he is seen giving a salute in the back doorway to his crew, who returns the gesture. The pleas from Manabu to come back must have torn his heart in two. His two sons will never forget what he did. He takes Big One and rams it into the alien battleship, destroying it, but giving his life in the process. All that can be found of him is his gun, which Manabu carries to this day. His death breaks the hearts of his wife and his children, but he left behind a legacy of self-sacrifice and duty. His older son Mamoru would die in the line of duty five years later, but Manabu lives on to carry out the legacy he left behind.

Trivia
  • Created by Leiji Matsumoto
  • Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (Japanese); Troy Baker (English)
  • Dies ten years before Manabu joins the force
  • Even after a decade, his first officer Schwanheld Bulge is still haunted by Wataru’s sacrifice, much like Manabu
  • His body was never found
  • All that was recovered from the wreckage was his gun, which Manabu carries with him as a keepsake despite it being non useable.
  • A space junction was eventually built at the location of his sacrifice in his memory
  • If one looks at Manabu and Wataru side by side, one would see how similar Manabu is to his father.

Quotes

“Listen boys, whether I make it through this or not one thing will never change: I will always be your father always.”

“All right then Sirius Platoon, it’s time to show this enemy that our true strength goes beyond guns and steel.

A fire rages in his soul, soft kindling turning to a ravaged flame.
His son's voice doesn't stop him, anymore - not that it doesn't tug, strongly,
At the core fibers of his heart, despite the screaming being
Out of earshot.
It takes all of his sheer strength, willpower, to turn his back, let his arm
Rest from the salute it has stood in, unwavering
For the past years.
A final sweeping look over his children is enough.

Time itself slows down for him, momentuous respite.
After a life of servitude one'd think it is an honor to go down like this.
The metronome of justice ticks in his brain, although
It is too late.
To give his life is the best option, to save his family, the loved ones of
The Sirius Platoon.
To die himself, so they may live to see another day.
It will be hard for them, he knows, for certain, their tears reflecting in their eyes in
Disallowed defiance.

Forced by the hierarchy of command to watch the sight of combustion and flame
Reacting with the vacuum, with their captain, with
Nothing left.
A tear rolls down his cheek - no one is there to see him cry,
The controls whirr, the sensors flashing red
Upon the impact.

The hurt in his heart is too great, to drown out the justifications of his
Sense of duty.
Kanna - she is strong.
His sons - they are like him.
Compassionate, still seeking glory; without a doubt they
Won't be able to release his memory, selflessly seeking revenge in the form
Of a respite.

With eyes closed in acceptance for the first time in his life
He can only hope to enjoy his final
- silent -
Moment,
And pray that once, all humans may
Lay down their guns - and peace may hopefully befall the galaxy
In loving memory
Of him.
