Biography
The first thing that he remembers is darkness. Not the soft darkness of night, but an unfathomable abyss, impossibly deep. It swallowed him whole. The only light was the distinct pinpricks of stars, uncaring and cold. It’s impossible to know for sure now, but he was something, once, he thinks.
But if he was, the abyss ate that old self whole. Now, he is nothing.
He drifts through the vastness of space, searching for an anchor. He finds none. He has no concept of a ‘planet’. The stars never grow any closer. It’s a purgatory, him and his void. They belong to each other in their shared misery. Such is the way it will always be.
Oh. Says the first voice he can remember. We can’t have that, can we?
A star draws closer. Her light is soft, golden. He runs towards it, and it runs towards him in turn. In a desperate bid to keep him, the darkness takes his eyes, but he can still feel the warmth of her light. He keeps running. When they reach each other, her voice is even warmer than her lantern filled with starlight.
He’ll never see her face, but that’s okay. It doesn’t matter if he’s blind, now. She still lifted him out of the dark.
Her hands are gentle as she traces his face and rewrites the ending of his story. Her name is Umbra. Eventually, he decides that his name is Amaranthine. They’re friends, they’re lovers, they’re partners in crime against an uncaring world. She leads through the dark, and he follows. When the void howls in rage, demanding her daughter back, he cuts away the shadows with his blade. When her light runs low with starlight, he refuels it with all his hope and love.
There is no happily ever after for them. The battle against sliding back into the dark, it never truly stops. The void will never stop crying for its lost child, and she will never surrender back into its grip. The thought does not scare him. Even if there is always another battle on the horizon, there’s no need to fear it with his star by his side.
There is no happily ever after, but they will live happily. They’ll make it so.
