i. once upon a time, a reality… ➔ before the crossroad reappeared
• They had a family once. The echoing memory warps but never fades. Thoughts of what could’ve been, ways to fix mistakes and words to quell regrets. The weight of so many hopes that reality itself split apart. They clutched their head in agony, every brief thought brought upon a new dimension. How could multiple realities coexist with each other? Their power shouldn’t be able to, and yet, it was undeniable. It hurt. New dimensions were etching itself onto their mind, scraping at their skull. Their mind couldn’t stop thinking and thinking. Raindrops. Mud. Grass. Everything that could be seen, heard and felt, weighed down on their body until finally, they collapsed.
• They were still in this world, the feeling of the ground under them held familiar memories, but they could feel it within reach… newly born dimensions. They could take off running into one of these realities, have a second chance… as many as they wanted even. Another family waiting on the other side of this reality, not theirs but perhaps it could be… A cowardly hope to run away, yet every roads taken in the name of finding one that could lead back home. Their body could, their legs wanted to, and yet their heart couldn’t. They stood still, hoping for the pain to subside, but new thoughts kept appearing. A landfill of hopes and sorrows, littered their mind, too many to even mean anything anymore. • Their brain wasn’t made for this, memories started to get muddled. 'Did that conversation even take place? Did I see that in another reality?' worries became a routine. They never took the step, never went into any of those, however it seemed that even looking into dimensions confused their brain. 'I know I have two siblings. We were the first and only beings in this desolate world. I know Mirage had a curious mind. I know Chronos skipped forward in time whenever annoyed. I know Mirage got lost somewhere he can’t come back from, and I know that’s the reason Chronos won’t speak to me anymore.' Some memories couldn’t ever be forgotten. These events happened in every reality, they were sure of it, a reality where they weren’t siblings didn’t exist. ➔ after the crossroad disappeared
• Long after their siblings were gone, other divines started to appear. They only ever talked a few times with Zaer and Haise, before deciding it was time to disappear from the devine world. They didn’t hold any animosity towards the two, but everything changed faster and faster now, how much it was the doing of every new realities created, they weren’t sure. Were the new realities leaking into this one? Perhaps. They had to leave. They liked to believe all divines could’ve been their siblings too, maybe in another life where their own hadn’t left, everyone could’ve been imaginary friends. However, new memories were a hazard, while old ones were fragile. They couldn’t risk forgetting Mirage and Chronos, they had to leave everybody behind before anyone could make the memories even blurrier.
• The mortal world had always been Mirage’s project, along with two other worlds, he created it as an expansion of the divine one, it had been in its infancy when its creator disappeared. Akin to his old memories, this was a fragile world. It felt as if a slight wind could take away everything. It was still a blank slate, only a dozen sparsely populated villages in the vast horizon. How could such a desolate landscape hold any longer now? The few inhabitants would die along with the past. 'We were supposed to create so many things here, I was supposed to help… I promised I would. Late help, and even later apologies. This memory has to live on, to hope, to dream and to make ammends.' the thoughts were racing again, but this time, he let the mind wander. How can one still dream when surrounded by the graves of every tomorrow that wasn’t, what to dream of then? Perhaps, nothing new. To the eyes of the lost, every old road leads back home. • "Oh! Sorry, mister! Don’t tell my mom! I didn’t do that on purpose, I promise! I thought you would’ve dodged it… but you can’t see right? Is that why you have a blindfold?" said a soft voice. It came from somewhere around knee height, they had to be really young. "Are you hurt, mister?" Their head hurts, however it wasn’t the fault of whatever object thrown at them. Ever since that fateful day, the painful thoughts subsided into a constant buzz in their mind, increasing whenever he encountered new situations and people. It never stopped hurting, but they had no one to blame but themselves. "Do you need help? Oh, I know! I can show you where the doctor is! Follow me!" They didn’t plan on responding, but they didn’t need to, somehow their legs started following in the steps of the hatchling. |
