» Benek, due to his professions as a tomb raider and archaeologist, is frequently on the move. He's extremely strict and paranoid, and tends to be emotionally distant and oblivious to others' wants and needs. Being obsessed with greed leads him to unintentionally putting all other duties on the back burner and disappearing for weeks at at time without communicating his whereabouts to anyone (even Betu).
He doesn't see the point of confiding in anyone, nor is interested in affiliating with any clan. What if they get wind of his discoveries? He agrees to nest with Betu solely to keep her busy, and isn't aware or curious of what actually happens to his offspring since he disappears for so long between clutches.
Betu, arguably just as emotionally cold as her mate, is on an quest to replace her broken pearl, which happened while she enacted her escape from a prison during a bad snowstorm in the Icefields. Her quest is the only reason tying her to Benek; she doesn't truly care for him or his work, and his disappearances are a welcome relief.
When her hatchlings regurgitate their new pearls, she immediately takes and closely inspects them. If she considers one to be 'perfect', she keeps it for herself, but if the pearl doesn't meet her standards she destroys it. She doesn't care about the hatchlings themselves since she abandons them at the first chance she gets, either with other dragons or left to fend for themselves in the wild.
The hatchlings' lives tend to be quite the struggle — if they're able to survive.
